I have a 58 cadillac my parents bought in 1960. Lifelong Southern California car, i was 1 year old then. Being a car nut since birth, I loved this car, and in 1982 mom signed it over to me. The jetaway was leaky for years, but in 2011 it became a gusher! Finding a complete rebuild kit was easy. Finding a shop to do the work was a nightmare! Every shop i called, including AAMCO, said OH NO. Wouldn't have a clue how to do that one. Finally a shop about 10 miles from home said, yes we can do it. They had the car about a month. Only charged me 800 dollars ! 12 years later its still shifting fine ! No leaks! Enjoyed your video . Thanks.

I was Transmission man in the Pontiac dealership. I graduated from this class on my 20th birthday. I am now 77 years old and still working. I just finished building a TH 350.

@@ceciliapolicarpio1822 The fluid was designated ATF and all GM and Chrysler cars used this fluid. It was replaced by the Dexron. Ford used a fluid just called type F. it had more friction ability. If we had a GM Transmission with a little slip we would put type F in to help.

Sorry, trying to type this on my phone and my comment got cut off. I just recently found your channel. You are absolutely amazing at the work that you do. Your videos are very helpful and I hope you continue to make many more videos. Thank you!😀👍
I had a 1964 Pontiac Star Chief, one of the last two car models to use this transmission. Around the time I sold the car, it was having trouble getting into reverse. I made sure to park the car pointing uphill so I could roll backwards if I had to.
@ 46:05 that friction plate is actually called a "neutral clutch".. @ 55:04 you can see the inside bottom of the case there is an alignment pin that keeps the one drum from rotating. it's inserted to a hole in the case. if he does'nt pull it out now he'll lose it in the wash. without it it's disaster time.
Hey Hiram hope all is well! Been watching the news and Houston has been devastated by a hurricane.Hope you and your loved ones are well God Bless Carnal!!!
There are some thrust washers in the front coupling unit that can wear and cause excessive end play. Either the fins will clash destroying the coupling or the snap ring comes off. Coupling and pump damage is the result.
I have a 1960 pontiac Jetaway 315 partially disassembled in my garage. The tool to get the front coupling apart is hard to find, so I had to improvise a puller myself.
can you do a couple videos of the MD8 transmissions and the differences between that casting / valve body and the differences of the internal components? I've called around and tried to find out but i cant seem to get a good answer! My truck came with a MD8 transmission and there are some things that i would like to do to it to make it more fuel efficient via putting a and overdrive system on it! not even sure if it has one or not and if it does weather or not if it works or not! things like that!
Did a very similar transmission as a senior in high school auto shop in 73 on a 62 F-85 with the aluminum V8. We called the fluid coupler a torus. IIRC it had two exhaust valves on the exterior chamber where the fluid could be dumped then the proper clutch pack applied and then it was filled with fluid again for the shift. Front pump has an external spring driven variable displacement system where pressure build up would move the outside 'ring' such that the pump would not waste energy pumping excess fluid. Might be the weak point in the design because internal leakage would then equal direct heat build up in the fluid. My kit was robbed of the two main passage conveyors between the pump and the valve body, we had to make do with fuel hose substitute because the parts house denied stealing anything out of the 'new' kit we bought from them. It quit after 6 months, when I pulled the pan to see what I could see, there were both sections of fuel hose laying loose. How they could escape total entrapment like that I still can not fathom. They appeared to be pristine too, should have been ragged up to a horrible extent. Should have kept that one, trade in value for another used car was $40. This one appears to be a good deal different, so now I'm wondering what I was working on so very long ago in another time and place?
My transmission cooler seems to be the exact opposite with a newer model Jetaway. The transmission actually pumps its oil through the radiator and pulls it back. Odd how only eight years can make such a big difference in the type of cooler.
How many parts in this transmission ? Hiram might have taken one of these apart before this one, right ? I'm thinking an adpater and 700R4 seems pretty appealing at this moment.
Hi i have cadilac 1957 with the same transsmition the 3rd gear don’t came when the engin cold when be hot after 15 min the 3rd gear come simple Whte is the problem?
I have a 1956 Oldsmobile 88 with the jetaway. No transmission shop wants to touch it. What was the big problem with these transmissions?? Or was it just the 1956 because it was the first generation for that trans so it wasn’t perfected yet???
I also had trouble finding a shop to do my 58 cadillacs jetaway. Finally did, they did a great job. Still shifting fine. A few year later, i stopped by to say hello and the shop was gone. The business next door told me they moved Out of state. Dang! Hope i never have problems with it, will be back scrounging around for a shop that will touch it again! Hopefully you found someone to fix yours.
@@johnfranklin5277 hey John. I indeed found an old transmission shop about 7 miles away from me. These guys have been rebuilding transmissions since the late 50’s. I got so lucky with them. Good ol Jim rebuilt my JetAway in a about 2 days. He told me what the common problem was with the 1st generation JetAway then replaced that with the upgraded part. I’ve been driving my ‘56 Olds as my daily driver ever since. There’s nothing like warming up an American Classic for 3-4 minutes every morning.

Mr Hyram, getting a little off subject here but did you ever do a Allison AT545 4 speed auto trans rebuild? I have searched youtube and no one has ever done one.
Hello, I have a question, my 04 vw beetle 2.0 with auto transmission has been doing this issue when it is cold where it sort of bangs into first gear, other gears are fine. When the car heats up the issue stops completely and it shifts perfect. What would it be? thanks, I like your videos.
Buick never used this transmission. Buick used the Dynaflow from 1948 thru 1963. The the Super Turbine 400/ Turbohydramatic 400 came out . But thbkkfully it was a completely different design from previous Hydramatics.
315 parts are really expensive. You can spend $600 on a master kit, and bushing kit. Not counting your pump and other hard parts you need! I hope it's a nice 57 Caddy, cause that's gonna be a pretty big bill!
The original Jetaway in my 58 cadillac that my parents bought in 1960 was still working fine in 2011 at 132.000 miles. I had to have it rebuilt because it started leaking like crazy. You cant really base reliability on old used transmissions that you have no history on such as driving style, driven hard, no maintenance etc...
I was told by several, more knowledgeable than me, Cadillac enthusiasts, that 56 was next generation Hydramatic since it now had a PARK position and, they had a reputation for leaking. Another guy in CLC told me, he thought 55 was a better car than a 56 ! IDK, I just want to get mine running, and drive it, and then paint it. @@johnfranklin5277

Really nice touch with the screen in the upper right hand corner to get a wider and different view of the action in addition to the regular close-up view. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like we've got it a lot easier nowadays building 4L60-Es and such than transmission rebuilders had it ba
Sorry, trying to type this on my phone and my comment got cut off. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like we've got it a lot easier nowadays building 4L60-Es and such than transmission rebuilders had it back then with trying to rebuild these units. Don't know if I'd have been able to cut it on transmission rebuilding if I'd tried it back then. Glad to see you're back making videos.
Great video, where's the rebuild? Anyone know if ANY other jetaway 315 videos? My caddy is stuck in 1st gear
Gracias por el video volvi a mi juventud un poquito
@ 46:05 that friction plate is actually called a "neutral clutch".. @ 55:04 you can see the inside bottom of the case there is an alignment pin that keeps the one drum from rotating. it's inserted to a hole in the case. if he does'nt
pull it out now he'll lose it in the wash. without it it's disaster time.
Hey Hiram hope all is well! Been watching the news and Houston has been devastated by a hurricane.Hope you and your loved ones are well God Bless Carnal!!!
Hiram, we miss you man!!!
There are some thrust washers in the front coupling unit that can wear and cause excessive end play. Either the fins will clash destroying the coupling or the snap ring comes off. Coupling and pump damage is the result.
Automotive archaeology. Keep up the good works.
+Chris Bamford Hmmm, sounds like a good title.
Love your vids... I wish you'd do part 3 of the 350...
I have a 1960 pontiac Jetaway 315 partially disassembled in my garage. The tool to get the front coupling apart is hard to find, so I had to improvise a puller myself.
I bought a 57 Powerglide kit from a place called Fatsco. Specializes in old trans parts.
+John Farr That's where this kit came from. Out of California.

can you do a couple videos of the MD8 transmissions and the differences between that casting / valve body and the differences of the internal components?
Could you tell me what component siezed it the torus rear cover won't rotate..front pump? My 57 strato flight locked up but only the torus shell
My transmission cooler seems to be the exact opposite with a newer model Jetaway. The transmission actually pumps its oil through the radiator and pulls it back. Odd how only eight years can make such a big difference in the type of cooler.
Great video, do you have the assembly video?
the reverse of tear down...durrrrrr
Where is the build up video for it? I am curious to see if you got the parts and how it went back together.
How many parts in this transmission ? Hiram might have taken one of these apart before this one, right ? I'm thinking an adpater and 700R4 seems pretty appealing at this moment.
Hi i have cadilac 1957 with the same transsmition the 3rd gear don’t came when the engin cold when be hot after 15 min the 3rd gear come simple
Whte is the problem?
@@jasondean3332Hey Jason, Very glad you were able to find a shop to rebuild your Olds transmission! Its definitely tricky trying to find mechanics to work on these old girls. Today's ASE guys just look at it as if its from another planet. Can't even install points. Carb rebuild...forget about it! Lol. Enjoy your ride, I'll be taking the 58 out for a little Thanksgiving cruise...😊
Hey hiram I love your videos. I work as a diesel mechanic and we don't usually rebuild transmission but every now and then we do, but we only work on Dodge, Gm, Ford transmissions. I watch all your videos even though I don't work on gas vehicle transmission. I love to watch you work. The way you tare down transmission is amazing, you have so much knowledge on transmission. It's fun to watch someone who's a master at their craft work. Thank you so much for your videos. I watched your videos before I rebuilt my first 48re and I just go done rebuilding my first 5r110, that I will be installing next week. Also just wondering have you ever rebuilt a Ford 6r140 and if you ever run across one, it would be awesome to see you rebuild it. I only ask because I own a 2011 f250 and one day I would like to rebuild it myself. Thanks for your videos.
+dnm20101 6R140's are good units so far. I've replaced solenoids on those units when they start actin up. They're available through Ford, you just need to identify it correctly. In a few years I think they will be as popular as the older units.
Hiram, thanks for the videos. They've been a lifesaver for me. Is there a part 2 on the jetaway 315? I need more info on governor removal, inspection, and reassembly. Thanks again
Do you happen to have any videos of the teardown and rebuild of a GM 4T60E transmission? The ones w/o the vacuum modular. Or videos for the transmission GM used in the 97 - 2005 MALIBU
God, this guy knows all the automatic transmission that exist in the market
I can't find the vedio of the rebuild of the 315 jetaway
Push starting isn't common now, but back in those days, batteries sucked compared to now, so you had to push start.
Hey sir I have a 2012 dodge 4500 truck every time I put it in gear it killed the motor in drive in back it back up I took pan down it have no shaving in the pan can u get back with me to guide on what I have to do
Parabéns! Sou do Brasil e acompanho seu canal. Teobaldo do canal TEOMAVE que falou sobre você. Também estou começando a trabalhar com transmissão automática. Estou aprendendo muito com você. Muito obrigado!
+Auto Tech Service Saludos.
Hiram, desculpas por não falar meu nome kkkkk. Meu nome é Daniel. Obrigado!
Meu nome é Daniel. Peço desculpas por não ter dito antes.
Thank you great video
You are The best
Dont stop
great video, are we going to see a part 2 soon?
Nope......
Hiram,so good to see how a professional will attack these ancient Hydramatic transmissions. I have a similar unit in my '64 Bonneville that I'm having leakage issues with when under storage but I can't see where it's coming from. Engine is currently out so I'd like to adress the situation, what I'm missing is a clip where you're putting this tranny back together again
What is the difference between 2010-2009 Chevy Impala transmission and a 2007 Impala transmission?
Hiram get a lifter crane off wall to lift heavy stuff. Save your back. Harbor freight has one for pickup truck bed. Attach to wall beams behind bench.
Awesome channel! Look foward to each one.
Ps my buddy on Long Island has a trans shop.
He cannot find workers to train to build. Can you find guys?
+motorhead I was thinking of something like that, too. I will consider it.
hiriam im having a problem with a 2008 chevy tahoe hybrid wont move when it gets hot.need help
What happen to the video of this transmission. I didn't get to see you put it back together
Hiram I watch your videos and it’s amazing the knowledge you have. I thought maybe you could help me, I’m buying a used suv and last time we did we bought a 2009 Saturn Vue and the transmission went out immediately, is there an suv with a very durable and reliable transmission- any help would be greatly appreciated
What kind of solvent do you use in your parts washer?
Hi Hiram, 5R55S question. Doing a complete rebuild. Can you do a vid or a post for what you would do additionally for new parts. Your get it oiut the door 3 part 5r55s vids are GREAT ! but if we do a rebuild we might miss a detail needed for all new parts on this iffy tranny. Thanks, Ron
Hey man, what's the best way to get in contact with you privately? Got a nissan skyline sedan 350gt auto import cvt8speed with transmission problems.
BUENAS TARDES PARA CONSULTAR UN PROBLEMA CON UNA CHEYENNE 2010 SE CALIENTA Y PIERDE LA COMUNICACIÓN DE LA COMPUTADORA ESPERO Y ME CONTESTE GRACIAS
Will a transfer case adapter from a 6L80e fit a 6L90e???
Yes externally the same transmission
Did you get this finished?
Hiram did you get deported? where did you go?
Is there a part 2?
where is your shop located
GREAT SHOW! i have been waiting for a 50's transmission scince i subscribed. the suspense, will he find the hard parts? on to part 2
Buick never used this transmission. Buick used the Dynaflow from 1948 thru 1963. The the Super Turbine 400/ Turbohydramatic 400 came out . But thbkkfully it was a completely different design from previous Hydramatics.
hello i like yours videos. could you tell me where i can see you because i have 2 cars that i need you repair thanks. i live in LA
Where is your shop located?
Being an automatic transmission builder do you drive manual or auto?
Would you do a 722.1?
Hello
My problem is shift gear 2nd not shift at all it is feel in neutral
What issuse with problem this
Thank you .
Have you thought about mounting a camera above the bench? Great video. Thanks
Enjoyed that. Did you find the parts you needed? Hope you are ok?
THANK YOU
315 parts are really expensive. You can spend $600 on a master kit, and bushing kit. Not counting your pump and other hard parts you need! I hope it's a nice 57 Caddy, cause that's gonna be a pretty big bill!
Very good vídeo
Our family had a '56 Cadillac, pretty sure it was the same trans. Replaced the trans 3 times (with units from wrecked cars). They just didn't hold up.
