Finally a video on TH-cam that makes the world a better place by helping everyone see they have little choice but to rebuild their own 4R100. I am rebuilding a 4R100 out of a 2000 F250. It is amazing how little information there is out there on doing this. It is not like you can trust anyone except you and a few other people in the world to do this right and there is not a public list of who those people are! You can't just buy one from a chain rebuilder unless you like being a victim. You can't take it to any a local trans shop or they do stupid things like put a stock snap ring in where a spiral is the only way to keep the spring retained or they put check balls back into the single port bathtubs just because the last guy put one in their accidentally. So, thanks for the video. It confirmed my original research but had I watched this video I could have avoided about 20 hours of reading forums full of 99% nonsense and 1% useful fact. The ATSG is nice but it needs to be rewritten by YOU to discuss all the necessary Sonnax or Transgo mods that are not optional and to discuss how to identify the various failure modes as you do. Thanks Hiram!

Having cut my teeth in several Ford dealerships as heavy line tech, I was taught to cancel overdrive while towing or below 55 mph.
I haven't had any issues with any transmissions of my own, never did break one.
I liked my AOD but it had a reprogrammed throttle body in it. And I do use the manual gear select when nailing the throttle.
I see why some folks could kill any transmission, as there is more to driving than smashing the throttle.

Great idea for the torque converter OD clutch. I have been in many vehicles driven by folks who use D only for all of their driving needs including going up hill and/or pulling trailers etc. and the OD mode will go back and forth as the load is just enough to disengage the OD clutch but not enough to hold it there thus, in and out of OD it goes while the driver pays no attention to this activity. Same goes with 4th/5th or 3rd/4th gear going back and forth under similar conditions. Folks need to understand when this is happening, turn off the OD or move the shift lever out of OD and if it's a gear issue, move the shift lever or the shift paddle and hold the shifting from occurring then work the gas pedal for the best speed for the gear being used. Most people don't do this so the transmission heats up and is worked very hard yet driver believe this is all very customary activity. Well, that depends on your pocket book or your concern for the transmission life. We never use the OD position when driving around town, only when on the highway.

I really like your videos you explain everything so good. I wish I new where you are at so I could have you rebuild my transmission. I know the transmission I have has 1st 2nd and reverse I bought it from a guy to put in my truck but I am going to be rebuilding have to. I have hab my truck for quite a few years I just got done rebuilding a motor for it and it's always had a stick shift and I am just tired of shifting so I went and got another truck that was junk and took and put all the wiring in from the truck in the my truck and now I'm going to be putting the automatic in there and I just wish I had somebody like you around that I can tell from listening to you you know what's up like your videos man I am watching this one very close.

You Sir Know your transmissions and I really appreciate the quality, informative videos. THANK YOU n WELL DONE
    I have a 99 F450 7.3 4R100 I believe has a stuck valve. it feels like in D it only has 3rd,
I can manually downshift to 1st, does nothing in 2nd n cluck into 3rd, then if I manually downshift to 2nd it seems to go to 1st gear.
I was working perfect w resent 5k rebuild w a lot of upgraded parts. Had major engine problems n sat for a year before swapping in new motor. Fluid looked fresh when drained altho low it was not driven before 16 qts new mec5 ATF
Is there anything else I should look at 1st before dropping valve body? NO CODES

Really appreciate you! Honest answers and guidance! And really meant that. Not trying to butter you up either. Do have one question. I suspect I have stuck valve or broken spring issue with very hard shift from 1 to 2. 2000 F350 HD with Pto. What kit do you recommend for those parts. Don't want to lose the check balls either! I guess that isn't an issue if I don't turn it over till I locate them. I've been doing mechanic work all my life but not transmission.

I currently have a 2002 4r100 that I currently rebuilt it currently shifts all of the high gears fine but the only issue I'm having is from first to second it won't shift until you let off the gas other than that it shifts great no shutter no hardships it does have the transgo Tugger kit installed also has the transgo spiral snap ring installed as instructed I did indeed update to a full splined forward clutch drum because it didn't have that when I pulled it apart any possible idea that might be causing this that I could look at easily hoping I don't have to tear it back out of the truck because everything in it is new and everything went in just fine no issues I'm suspecting possibly a 12 valve sticking in the accumulator valve body?

    Sir,
You are obviously are very knowledgeable on transmissions. I have a question on my 1993 FORD F150 5.0 MOTOR. I Have a E4OD transmission that has a slight hesitation upon acceleration. The truck computer has no check engine light on but when I use a code reader, I get the following two codes. first one is number 621 which is a solenoid/circuit failure - solenoid 1 - transmission, and the second code # 629 is a torque converter clutch circuit fault - transmission. I can't find anything on these codes or how to fix my hesitation issue. I can only assume that I need a new transmission solenoid pack. Any advice or direction you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you

Hello sir!! Very much appreciate your video. I work at a shop here in North Dakota! I am soon going to be attempting to rebuild my transmission in my personal truck. It's a 2000 7.3 power stroke 4r100 that has no 1-2 shift. It will skip 2 and go right to 3 then 4 just fine with no slipping. Also have a core 4r100 that just stopped moving completely and am curious to know which would be easier to start in on or if I could use parts from one to make the other go. Interested in your thoughts and curious to know if I could get your information to contact you with my other questions. Would appreciate any response. Thanks again!

Would you recommend the PWM TCC to On/Off TCC for a non-loaded truck? I'm building a 4x4 E350 RV... It'll be heavy, but not like a F550 or a full-fledged RV.
Been reading mixed reviews on that kit for normal driving. Thanks!

Hiram I have a 2002 F-250 2WD XL crew cab long bed pickup with a 4R100 transmission. I have a drive line vibration occuring at most speeds and I already had the u-joints and drive shaft support bearing replaced. When I wiggled the yoke that splines over the output shaft, there was a lot of lateral play in the shaft and I was wondering if that could possibly be the cause of my vibration due to a worn bushing. Thanks in advance.

Got a question for you maybe you'll reply. I have a 1999 f250 7.3 4x4 auto with the 4r100. The problem I'm having is that in 3rd gear it doesn't want to lock up unless you go into 4th then press the od off button and then it will go into lock up. It's a ford reman that was installed around 20k ago I carried back to them and there response was "does better than most". Thinking about it I think it only locks up in 4th. Could that be the torque converter it shifts very smooth just not lock up

    • @HaydenIngram
      @HaydenIngram 9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Hiram Gutierrez ok then it's working properly then. Just a little different than my brothers f150 it usually locks in 3rd no problem and when you turn od off it goes straight into 3rd lock. His is 4r70w I believe. It's a 02. Thank you for the quick response

What I found was the boot between the shift handle and steering column was pressing down so hard on the wire harness to the switch that it shorted wires to ground there. Had to build a custom harness after wiring repairs made out of copper pipe condom to keep the boot from doing it again. Mine was blinking for a while and then just went dead eventually.

My tranny stopped going in to drive, reverse works but it started out by taking a second or two to go into forward gears, then I had to give it a little gas to go in, to coming out of gear at a stop light then nothing. This was over a couple weeks time span. It didn't leave me stranded though I made it home. Any idea what it could be anyone?

What would cause my 4r100 to start shifting all over the place right after my overdrive light starts flashing? It doesn’t do it all the time and it shifts great until my overdrive light starts to flash and then it’s like it’s possessed and shifting all over the place and hard too. I cannot get any codes to pull up either for some reason so I don’t know what to do with it now. Anyone ever experience any of this with their 7.3? I did notice one time that when the overdrive light came on that certain gauges in my dash stopped working so I slapped the top of the dash pretty hard a few times and the overdrive light stopped flashing and my gauges started working and it started shifting fine again so yeah idk wth is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I ain't never understood why they need to have different length bolts on a valve body. Seems like it causes more shit than just about anything. I mean, I know there are design considerations in the process, but it seems to me like in most cases, they could have equal length bolts and not have any issues with clamping force on the valve body.

I have a 4r100 out of a 02 7.3 excursion, it has no forward gears, strong working reverse, fluid came out cleanish with no burnt smell or major metal shavings, just a little on the magnet around the drain hole. I've pulled the valve body off following your video, all check balls and everything else looks clean and working as far as i can see. Any thoughts as to what it may be as its so clean in there?
