  • In this video, we look at all the internal parts of the Hydra-Matic transmission from Mr. Gold. There were some internal problems so we had to take the transmission completely apart and address these issues. Ultimately it will get a full rebuild.

Nice to see it all laid out, I'm always amazed at how a little bit of fiber material glued to some metal plates can last for decades, one would think it would just all deteriorate over time.
    Thanks for sharing Nick!

I'm probably going to be rebuilding mine at school this fall. I wanted a preview of what I'll be doing and found this video.

Hey, Nick. Sorry about the bad and expensive news on your transmission. Hey, it's only money, right? Thanks very much for the informative video. I found it interesting because about 10 or 15 years ago I had the "Roto-Hydramatic" transmission rebuilt in my '63 Olds 88 Coupe (which I no longer own.) That particular transmission was apparently notoriously bad and unreliable. One of the very few variants on the GM "hydramatic" transmission that wasn't highly regarded. (I know the Cadillacs had much better versions.)
Transmission guys amaze me: The shop that rebuilt mine had no experience with that obscure unit, but went online and educated themselves and did a great job with the rebuild. It was very expensive though...about twice the cost of the more common Turbo Hydramatic, so I feel your pain.

Hey Kaye Nine Two, yes my guy has never done one either but he does know old transmissions in general. He knows the cruisomatic. Im expecting this job to cost about $3000. Hes had the car now for a month and I have not heard from him so I think he is having issues with it but I dont know that for sure. I did tell him I was not in a hurry and didnt need the car so maybe he is just putting it at the end of the line?? Who knows. Thanks.

Hello Nick. I was wondering what was going on with the trans. You had mentioned about taking it in. Now are you going to get the experience of seeing it get put back together? It's like a big mechanical puzzle. I thought at first that you took it apart, lol!

Hey George, I didnt take the trans apart myself, I use a transmission shop near my house and the guy is very good, he knows these older transmissions. I also gave him the shop manual and he is using that. I'm glad we found the problems but its a lot more money spent on the car that I anticipated. As they say, shit happens. Thanks.

Great Video! Thank you for posting! How much did it cost to get it fully rebuilt including parts. I seen Caddy Daddy sells complete rebuild kits but I wanted to find someone who has done it before.

Hey, it was about $3500. Not cheap. He did a good job though, drives and shifts nice.

@@vintagethunderbirdrepair9426I have a 58 cadillac that my parents bought in 1960. Lifelong Southern California car. In 2011 it started leaking like crazy. Mom gave me the car in 1982, she knew i always wanted it.. Transmission was still working fine. I bought the rebuild kit from Kanter auto parts. Had a devil of a time finding a shop that would work on it. Finally found a shop about 20 miles from home, had it towed there and they rebuilt it , did a great job, only charged me 800 dollars. 12 years later still working fine. We also purchased a 1961 cadillac in 1976 in very nice shape. Drove it for 5 years then sold it. Started running poorly, needed a valve job and we really didn't need it anymore. The 58 has now been in the family 63, soon to be 64 years in the family. It was originally delivered to our family Doctor on January 7th 1958. Has factory AC, and power windows. Hope your car is doing well!
