      Miguel, On OG AS3X receivers, I noticed in SAFE if you get into a stall spin situation, once the nose is pointing down the ailerons go full deflection and elevator as well. The transmitter has no effect and the airplane will probably crash. Does AS3X Plus address that?

    • @MiguelFAlvarez
      @MiguelFAlvarez 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@spikekavalench When you say OG AS3X receivers, are you talking back to the AR636? I believe on those, there was a roll to yaw mix added on BNF's to help it exit a "death spiral". We have not seen any related issue on the newer forward programming based receivers, and we usually test a lot of tricky situations for SAFE to get out of including induced death spirals, etc. AS3X+ is more of an update to AS3X itself and has little to no effect on SAFE. The only thing this update brings to SAFE is mainly Hand Launch Assist.

      Thanks for the review of the internals of AS3X+ I was a process control computer programmer for 30 + years and had to do this type of presentation myself. It’s hard to see the code and then have to “dumb” it down to explain it to non programmers. Thanks again.

      That being said, I did have two receivers go to panic mode after the update and after 3-4 flights after the update. One on Timber SWS: on take off it turned over and went in on 5-7th landing to adjust elevator to flap setting. The other way on a commander that I update and on the 4th flight of the day, I lost all control and it show stright up at 90 degrees after lift off and only had throttle control. well it smacked the ground head on when i stopped letting the commander climb. No other issues yet. I almost sold all my spektrum after these two crashes.

      Brian I'm not an expert on it, but the issues you mentioned sound more like a brown out or power issue to me. Did you look at the flight log telemetry by chance after the crashes? I haven't heard anything like that regarding the update, and with about 10 or so RX's updated so far with multiple flights, no issues on my end yet. I'm not sure what panic mode is, but the fail safe mode should level the plane if you loose signal completely. Hate that happened man.

    Thanks for having this interview. I have been reluctant to try as3x because the hobby store I deal with told me my older spectrum radio was not compatible with as3x receivers. I have been trying to find other brands that are compatible with my dx8 transmitter. It's good to know I can still use spectrum receivers. I am considering upgrading to a new transmitter, I'm just not sure what I want to get yet. I do love my spectrum radio, I've had nothing but great things to say about it. I've just have owned it since 2012, and am not willing to give it up yet.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah man glad we could do it! Miguel is a great dude. A NX8 should be on your list for sure. It programs very similar to your DX8, which was the point of the NX series...to bring the most modern tech to a non-touch screen TX that is user friendly for DX users. In the mean time, your DX8 will bind to and work just fine with current Spektrum AS3X+ receivers in the BNF planes. You can also use forward programming to tune the AS3X+ on out of the package AS3X+ RX's if your DX8 is a G2 (the all black one) with the latest update for the DX TX's.

    Already seen this video 3 times. Its so grt. I think the idea of flying two side by side is interesting and would be cool however your argument is reasonable. And if the emphasis is on the feel for the pilot, then it will be fascinating to have a video with the pilot flying same plane in succession with different versions of the software and talk us through it.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes Miguel was very informative! The second video will be on tuning a plane start to finish with AS3X+. The focus isn't really about a comparison to OG AS3X. I think HH has some AR630 OG AS3X RX's left, but after those sell out all AS3X RX's moving forward will be AS3X+...including the ones in newly released BNF's bigger than UMX's. It's one of those things you have to do yourself to really have a complete understanding of the difference. I'll try to articulate my thoughts on the difference in the two, and talk about a particular example I've experienced ...my 48" Extreme Flight Edge. That example should explain (as well as it can be explained) how a great flying plane on OG AS3X can be made even better with AS3X+. That said I won't be flying a plane with the OG, updating it, and re-tuning it with the + in the video. I'll be using a plane I have already tuned with a pure airframe set up that has no stabilization (I won't disclose the plane just yet, its gonna be a surprise). I'll fly it and explain the things I can't get perfect with just a pure set up, then I'll show a start to finish tune with AS3X+. I'll explain how I'm able to dial out the things I don't like about it, and make it not only more stable/predictable, but also make it fly like it is a bigger/better plane.

    AS3X+ has made landing and taking off with my jets almost like cheating but in a good way. The nose wheel heading hold is incredible. I can let go of my sticks and the Jet will land itself. There is some kind of Black Magic going on with AS3X+. The powerbox and synapse are incredible in my Cub Crafters X Cub. I was using Bavarian Demon Cortex Pros before that. Now with my ix20SE with AS3X+ and forward programming, it just makes setting up everything a breeze. I no longer fear wiring and setup. I enjoy it now. Can you make a video on doing 3D maneuvers like pop tops crankshafts etc? You seem to explain things better than most other channels. You had great questions in this video. Keep up the great work Adam.

      One moment I wish we had on video was when we were testing Hand Launch Assist. We wanted to see how badly we could throw an Aeroscout and still have it level out and recover. The threshold ended up being David Payne vertically boomerang throwing it from the wing tip, and the release was also slightly late with it basically smashing straight into the ground. Hand Launch Assist could do nothing there 😂

    I may have missed this point on the video, but how can the additional channels with AS3X+ be accessed on an AR8360T when there are only 8 ports and a bind port? Thanks

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The update only adds channels to the Transmitters. Your AR8360T will still be an 8ch RX, however all the more modern Spektrum RX's as well as the TX's can take advantage of "virtual channels" if you are using Spektrum/Avian equipment. So things like Thrust reverse with an Avian ESC or switching from AS3X+ to SAFE don't require a port. You could technically have servos plugged in all 8 ports, and still have those two functions as 9 and 10, as well as flight modes assigned to a switch as function 11 (or channels if you want to call them that).

I fly with a Radiomaster Boxer and can forward program the AR631 I have. If I upgrade, how do I know what settings to use in the new AS3X+?
    Thank you for your info and advice.
    Bruce

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Bruce. Man it depends on how and when you fly. With airplanes like that if you fly scale or normal sport flying in calmer conditions, you might not need to update them. If you fly in a bunch of wind a lot it may be. For me, I've updated planes I was looking to improve in some way. Planes that were not quite "there" in my opinion. For 3D planes it is amazing and for planes that may have some little issue in the set up that puzzles me it has so much potential. For planes that are already flying really well in calmer conditions it could be hard for some average RC pilots to feel a difference. There is a difference, but it is subtle in those circumstances. In a lot of wind even a less experienced pilot would feel the difference though. I have a Cherokee, and probably won't update that one. Spektrum will be progressively updating and adding to the downloadable set up files for BNF planes so that there are more AS3X+ set ups available to download. Be looking out for those two planes to have a downloadable set up. When one of them does, update the RX and try it. Then you won't have to worry about the set up and you can see what it feels like to you.

      @Stirling_RC_Videos หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ModelAV8RChannel Thanks Adam! Great advice and I appreciate your comment about you not updating your Cherokee. Both the Cherokee and T-28 fly really well for me in almost any condition. I'm not flying them in 12+ mph wind!

    I just got a viper 90 mm and f16 80 mm eflite. All your videos and input has been very helpful to set up and flies amazing and was able to use the inputs from ur settings on viper 64 mm as well..
    however I amnot sure off how much heading hold I should use.. or shouldninuse it at all. If CG is good and other as3x+ settings are dialed in, does it make such a difference? I am an intermediate level pilot at best and can do very basic maneuvers if that helps you answer this question.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Congrats on getting a fleet of great jets! I love all three of those! We don't list heading hold numbers because as you might have expected I don't use any. It isn't necessary in my mind unless you're trying to dial in something radical like making a plane hover itself...which you can do believe it or not. Normal AS3X has *some heading hold affect anyway, but it is minuscule. That is how it knows to correct for a specific axis if that axis is moved when you are not commanding that movement...like in high wind for instance. I would never add any or use it for regular flying.

      Unfortunately we've been swamped with tasks and have not had time to make new models. However when i downloaded the preset v3 as3x+ file, it did not let me get into the detailed as3x+ settings like gain adjustment, nose wheel, hand launch etc which came with v3 of this as3x+software. Is this what is to be expected with the preset file in the receiver?

      Our BNF models have somewhat limited menus to prevent users from getting into trouble, or too far from our recommended setup. If the model was imported correctly, you should see stop lock/release rate settings in the AS3X Settings menu. Make sure you have the Show Advanced Settings option enabled in the first page when entering forward programming. If you want to be able to adjust all the new settings, you'll have to factory reset the receiver and set up from scratch.

      If I’m understanding this correct as3x plus offers more correction to outside parameters while plane is flying and if I use the same settings I have on regular As3x and apply it to the updated receiver which has as3x+ it will have more locked in feel?
      Because all of these settings apart from a couple of them like nosewheel and hand launch were there before as well.

      @@rohangupta9358 You will need to retune the model when updating as the algorithm has changed, and this effectively changes what gains you end up at before you reach model oscillations. We don't recommend copying over your AS3X gains from original AS3X to AS3X+. AS3X+ adds more features for fine tuning, but if you followed the same basic setup as you did on previous AS3X and ignore the new settings (stop lock/release rate), the performance is still vastly improved. You still do need to setup from scratch if you're not importing a pre-configured AS3X+ model. Our wiki page covers basic tuning procedure, as well as advanced tuning procedure if you also want to fine tune stop lock/release rate.

    Hi Adam, I’ve been into rc aeroplanes since 1978 on and off. I took a break from the hobby back in 2004. I then came back to the hobby about 2 years ago. OMG how things have changed! Personally I hate what’s happened to the hobby back when I was flying we spent the winter months building and started flying when the weather got better. Now we have AS3X, safe,foam planes, electric planes, mostly ARTF. Which ok that in itself probably a good thing. Now getting to my point lol. I personally think all this technology is ruining the hobby people are relying on AS3X, Safe, ect that’s what I’ve found. By the way I think you probably one of the best channels out there. I love the advice you give especially to new pilots. I rarely comment on people’s channels but thought I would on this occasion.

      I got back into the hobby last year and dove into the modern tech/ electric/ foamy world. Now that I have my old school models back up and running, I much prefer those. I agree that all this new tech does take away the human element regarding building and flying skills.

      This comment makes no sense. Our modern entry aircraft are easier to fly cheaper and more durable. This has made the hobby more accessible and higher possibility of success. There are way more people in the hobby now than 30- 40 years ago.
      Are you familiar with as3x have you flown and properly tuned it? Stabilization makes the model fly better. Still takes a level of skill to fly it tho. Comments like this remind me of when engines started going fuel injection and the carburetor guys hated it primarily because they didn't understand it. Old ways aren't always the best ways. Progress is taking what is good and making it better.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Bob thanks for the kind words. I totally understand where you're coming from. Many folks coming up today are sadly inept when it comes to modelling skills. They can't solder or fix much of anything and any little incident has them dead in the water. Heck I get folks complaining about stock props being out of stock...they don't even know you can use an aftermarket prop. The foamies are super convenient, and I'm all for that (sometimes I'm lazy too! Lol), but they don't teach people much because everything is done for them. What is unique about me is I am familiar with both schools of thought. I've built kits. Plans, balsa, and a month or two. I flew without gyros for decades, and still own and fly many planes without them. I've set up literally hundreds of planes without them and made them fly as well as they can. On the other hand I've learned all the aspects of programming a gyro for specific purposes in specific planes, and I'm still learning. So I know the advantages of both techniques, and both can benefit the other. Some of the best flying planes I own were first painstakingly tuned...just pure airframe tune. I got them as good as they can get. Throw, expo, mechanical advantage, balance, thrust angle adjustments, etc. Then brought the gyro in a tiny bit at a time to address the thing or things I couldn't get perfect...and got them perfect. You see, you can have the gyro do as little or as much as you'd like through careful tuning. I can tune it to make corrections I'd normally have to make, or I can back it off so it has some stabilization, but leaves that particular pilot requirement to me.
      I think the disconnect in the "to gyro" or "not to gyro" debate is you have people on one side that came up like we did...old school, and they really haven't learned the ins and outs of gyro programming. They just know they have been fine without them for years, so what is all the hubbub about. They observe from afar, get misinformed by people that don't know any more about it than they do, and they assume a lot. On the other side you have the ones that came up in the gyro age. Their first plane had one, and every single one after that did as well. Their idea of a set up is trim it, and then start monkeying with the gyro. They tell guys like you to "get with the times", and "technology is progress". They observe the non gyro crowd from afar and watch them do what they are doing without one, and assume they are missing out and stupid. As guy than can do both...and still does both, I can say with a high degree of certainty that both sides raise some good points, but both sides are mostly wrong. The problem is, neither side really knows how the other half lives. The gyro guys couldn't tune a plane to fly well, and fly it well without one if their life depended on it. The non gyro guys assume a BNF is as far as it goes, and couldn't fine tune a gyro if their life depended on it. The truth is, both techniques are valuable skills to have and to learn. You know how you know what a gyro really does for you, and to what level it does it by setting? You fly the crap out of planes without one for hours and hours on end. Then when you bring the gyro into play at different levels...you know exactly what it is correcting for, and to what level. That is also how you know what other set up settings do for you. If you never fly without them, you'll never know the difference. If you never fly with them...you'll never know the difference. You wanna know what the guys on both sides of the debate haven't done? Both. They haven't done both at length, but they argue the points as if they have.
      You wanna know what the absolute truth is this when it comes to model airplane set up? Progress is being smart enough to use the best lessons learned from the past, and incorporate that knowledge with the technology of the present to render the best possible flying airplane. If I get a plane where I want it without one...fine. If I discover I need one to sort something in particular out or prepare a plane for flying a lot in high wind, or if I want to make a smaller, cheaper plane fly bigger and more expensive...fine. I do what is needed. Doesn't matter to me what that may be either way. Anyone steadfastly in one camp or the other doesn't really know what knowledge and capability they are missing out on.

    I have a question that maybe you or the guy in the video can answer. I’m curious about the nose wheel heading hold function. But… I’ve seen twobrothersrc test it once on a I believe F-16 and the nose wheel was steering full right before landing and on landing it ground looped. How can you be sure that the heading hold points straight forward on landing? I want this function because if it work it seems great on crosswinds and also when I do full thrust reverse on my viper 90mm it tends to pull to the right.

      @ModelAV8RChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, that isn't the recommendation, that is simply an option. Many experienced pilots will want to manually control every aspect of their set up. Less experienced pilots may embrace the option not to have to do that by using the SMART Transmitter file. Lazy experienced pilots (like me sometimes! Lol) may use the file, then just tweak that because it takes less time. It is totally up to the individual.

    Awesome 👏🏽 video Adam and your guest! Hats off to you for always taking steps to make this hobby more accessible. I came into this hobby in 2021 to fly fighter jets. I have always loved aircraft. But I want to perform air show maneuvers like the swiss&Spanish f18 show teams or the Belgium dream vipers or the f22 post stall moves at an air show. Until now it took much more advanced equipment than Spektrum put out to perform these maneuvers with some reliability and accuracy. For this I say it’s about time they have something I can manipulate to help my actions result in close to scale fly by wire abilities of modern fighter jets. These small jets are lightyears behind the scale counterparts and AS3x+ is just a small way we can make them close the gap. Of course my 20 warbirds probably wont be getting these updates just yet because most of them are just not designed to perform like a modern jet but, if making a tail dragger track better is part of the reward for using modern tech than I may just do it for slips and wiggles😉. Btw more elderly flyers I’ve met have been able to keep flying planes they like because of safe select than not. It’s awesome seeing 85+ year olds still flying despite having slower reflexes and dexterity. Haters will be haters. Can’t please everyone. Some folks hate the way things are but don’t want anything to change 😆. Thanks to all that support growth and positive vibes to the hobby!

    Great channel but in my opinion this new, more expensive technology just confuses people and adds to the possibility of crashes due to faulty set ups. The 1st AS3X receivers were the best and appreciated for what they could adjust for in windy conditions. Then they got greedy and required a programming cable. Then AS3X/SAFE , now this. Not only have they priced me and many others out of their Rx's , but has this really done anything to help encourage the younger generation into the hobby ? I doubt it.

    • @MiguelFAlvarez
      @MiguelFAlvarez 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The possibility of faulty setups is always a tradeoff with giving users more options and features, but nobody is forcing people to use these features if they don't want to. The BNF's we offer provide people with the benefit of preconfigured planes without the need to worry about these things themselves, but that of course limits things to the planes we offer, and a lot people want to enjoy this technology on more than just that.
      I have to disagree on the programming cable "greed" comment. While the first AS3X receivers did not require a cable, they were very limited in their capabilities compared to what we offered afterwards. And now, the new receivers are fully configurable through the radio interface, and the cables only purpose is to update/register the receivers, which you only have to do if you want to benefit from the new features we continually work on and release, such as this AS3X+ update. Its a free update you can use on a product you had already purchased, but again, no need to do so if you don't want to.
      As for the younger generation, this could be a matter of opinion. These receivers are the same ones we include in our trainer/beginner friendly planes such as the Aeroscout (which uses an AR631). I go to my local club every now on then on Thursday evenings when we have training nights open to anybody from the public to come and try. Myself and other club members have had many positive experiences of new people joining the hobby of all age groups.
