It is a great performance. Geoff's voice is incredible. But live perfection is already taken by Pink Floyd's Pulse performance of "Comfortably Numb" or Led Zep's Celebration Day performance of "Kashmir".
Geoff can't or chose not to hit those E5 high notes 7 years later when he hit the notes in the Japan 1984 concert. He was 25 in '84 and now he's 63 and STILL rockin
I think by this point he started to realize he was beating up his voice and wanted to try to preserve it. Even he admits now he can't hit those notes anymore. But that's fine. It's not QR without him.
@@redberdyaev6648 He definitely smoked, as I saw him smoking in interviews. It has always perplexed me, as he obviously put so much work into his range and tones. If I were literally the best at something in the history of metal, I would work hard to preserve it. Still love him, though!
Scott has the absolute BEST sounding set of drums and percussive setup in all of rock and roll! Always has! In the studio albums you can really hear the tightness and clarity in his playing, nothing is mushed. I can't explain it - it's just there! Beautiful sound!
I remember the first time I heard this song (on the album) ... "F*#K!! What an amazing song!" Degarmo was the master, and Tate was unparalleled! Oh those were the days!
SO MUCH TALENT ON THAT STAGE. SOME OF IT LIKE TATE AND DEGARMO WAS PRETTY ODVIOUS BUT SCOTT R WAS A BEAST ON DRUMS AND NEVER GOT THE CREDIT OR RECOGNITION THAT HE DESERVED.
Where actual musicians and professional vocalists roam. This is live with no lip sink . I've seen them several times back in the day and every show rocked and had clear vocals.
Whole lot of talent on that stage, but I got to give an extra credit to the teddy bear playing white guitar. He’s into this song! Thank you youngster’s for this song.
these guys were extremely underrated at that time in age . these guys blew away most of the metal bands at that time . excellent sound and music composing talent KICK ASS BAND !!!
I don't think i can name many bands that can do so well while playing their songs live, especially when the vocals are so crafty and hard to sing. Geoff Tate sounds amazing, instruments are all in shape and Rockenfield makes the drums look so interesting and full of life, i love his drum rolls and odd beats sometimes...
@@MichaelB769 Are you actually being critical? There are few people in the world who can hit the E5 in studio, much less on the road. He spoiled us with his voice for so many years we took it for granted. The best metal vocalist ever.
Geoff is one of the greatest singers in rock history. I saw them on their first tour and je still sounds just as good today This was the best line up they had.
I saw this dudes when they opened for KISS in 84 or 85 when Kiss was promoting the Animalize tour. Queensryche was coming out with Take Hold of the Flame tour. Queensryche blew them away !
I think I am not alone when I state that Geoff Tate at his best time was the best Metal singer EVER. Watching the old live concerts is just amazing. Even Bruce Dickinson was never at this level in my opinion.
In response to the comments saying Geoff "couldn't hit the high notes" in this video, something important to keep in mind: this was very likely toward the END of their set (maybe even the final encore), as this tour was in support of Empire. Meaning, he had the balls to play 'Take Hold the Flame' AFTER singing his ass off for an hour or more. And he had to do this night after night... for several months. And yet, he still did hit several high notes (granted, not as sustained as they normally would be). So to even get THIS performance is a true testament to the generational talent Geoff Tate is as a vocalist. Oh, and as a drummer -- it was so satisfying to finally hear this song with that BIG 1991 drum sound I've always longed to hear on this track.
You're being kind. Geoff knows this song has a long E5 to hit in the beginning, so this song should be early in the setlist if what you're saying is true. And honestly, for him, it's not hard to hit that note and sustain it for a bit. He slightly its it at 3:55. And furthermore, I will tell you that if hitting high notes ain't your thang, then don't right and release songs where high notes are the thing. SOO simple. Do you hear Eddie Vedder doing that?
@@DigitalBathInAZ You know, some people say that he was saving his voice for that 18 month tour. And it's kinda right since they were performing +22 songs per show every night (excellent performances btw) but in my opinion he also became lazy. Not talking about "Take Hold Of The Flame" which is a VERY difficult song to sing and I can understand he skips some notes, but what about "Walk In The Shadows"? That song was like the 3rd song on every set (right after "Resistance") almost an opening song, and Geoff delivers a pretty weak rendition of it in every Empire show. He tunes down, skips some notes and doesn't even tries the F#5 after the solo when he was capable to go very high (still). Its like he didnt like the song or something, and that gives a very poor rendition of a great song. Please, compare that song to the 1989 or 1997 live versions , big difference. It's strange that he performed way better the last Empire shows in 1992 than in the whole tour. Still, he is a TOP singer andnhe was very powerful back in the 90's, that unplugged session is extraordinary.
They also did Operation Mindcrime full album on this tour. It was fucking amazing! Probably the best sound of any concert I've been to, and I've been to alot!!
I agree,I saw this tour and this was at the end of the show after doing Mindcrime in it's entirety, and plenty of Empire, plus some other old ones. Probably 2 hours in,and still killing it👌
Was lucky to see this show/tour in Amsterdam with Lynch Mob opening for them. Then went and caught Dread Zepplin for a midnight show at the Paradiso. That was a magic nite in '91!
One of the best Rock bands back then. The original lineup I'm speaking of. Seen them five times and Everytime was blown away! I'm 60 now and I love to get their CD's out and listen and reminisce of days gone by when music was that, music! If only they could have realized how much they were loved then maybe they would have done everything to stay together. No other band can even equal to what they had. Love them forever. ❤️
Same here... It passed me by somehow. I don't think it had much radioplay in Australia??. Then again, neither did Rush and they've been my #1 since 1980

john calentine Yep ... but, it is also true that they were monsters in their instruments. De garmo could be great author, but, without a Rockenfield that had the rhythmic absolutely not granted, or a Wilton that could tangle with Chris in a refined way (walk in the shadow, gonna get close ..., road to madness) all the songs would have remained in the standard of the heavy metal universe ... This is the ONLY Queensryche. Anything other, just as Journey without Perry...merely a cover band.
Back when music was great!
Not great... Legendary...
This band was a powerhouse at their peak.
Their newest album is killer. It no longer sound like old Queensryche but a new evolved sound. New drummer is more technical. Way heavier.
But their peak was the first album, for Geoff anyway. Eight years later and he can't hit the high notes anymore.
