Rubeauti - it is very moving how you so sincerely and genuinely care about improving your own understanding and the understanding of others of you country and the lives of Filipinos. It will take many years, and inspired wisdom, for some of the improvements you hope for to come to pass … I do doubt that the needed wisdom / guidance will come from the top of the political leadership as it seems that, in the Philippines, wise and inspiring leaders do not get elected. And so, if wise guidance will not come from the ranks of government, the challenge will fall on your generation to find ways to inspire your fellow Filipinos (who already dream for more), to dare for more and make changes at the grass roots. Keep up the good work with your messages.

That's exactly what the economic background problem with the Philippines is in general.. they just pipedream about what could be..
And that's it.. there are no innovative MEN in charge from the stinking Government on down.. it's self Doomed mixing Superstition with Religious beliefs and approaches..
THIS is a major part of why the Philippines women are seeking American men!!
Don't bother me. I've been observing this for decades..
It is what it is because you accept it as final and leave it at that..
You cannot help those who are not willing to help themselves..

I'm not Philippino but I belong to a Philippino church community. I have seen the assimilation into American culture eradicate the Philippino culture. When I come in I salute my elders with the Beso de Mano yet the philippinos have fallen away form that tradition. The Black Chist is not celebrated in the Catholic churches and there are no comparsas playing traditional music and folkloric dances have be dropped for the new video line dance. At this rate Philippino culture will be non existent. In New York with each passing generation. Since America is a melting pot I Invite you to bring something to put into the melting pot to add more flavor.

That was a real open and from the heart video Rubeauti, and it was obviously hard to do. I understand your frustrations, as I have experienced how hard even simple things are to do there. The country needs more people with your mentality, in positions of power where they can try to change things gradually. Part of the charm of the Philippines is its different pace of life, but many things are made far more complicated than they need to be. The feelings of helplessness are sad to see, it’s an acceptance and resignation to the hand that they have been dealt. Until things change at local or National government level, it’s hard to see how things will change. Keep speaking out, your channel and influence might help in some ways. Never give up.

Wow! You articulate these issues very well. I think the cultural habit of (saving face) contribute hugely to the problem, many Asian cultures places more value on saving face then holding self and others accountable, while on the surface this may seem Noble, the long term effect is not good.
Even in your example with the eyelashes the concern was for not embarrassing him rather than holding him accountable.
Filipinos are not helpless, they just have not realized their power, I think overtime this will change.

@@Rubeauti Be careful about taking in reductionist social theories. While the good ones are based upon objective observation, human behavior is complex and individuals may react differently from the same stimuli when variables are tweaked a bit. The authors of these behavior theories all have narrative to fit into what or how they think it is. There is however objective truth. I agree with you about Filipinos not able to accept constructive criticism. Still, a negative learned behavior. I disagree with you about Filipino culture not westernized. Among all the Indo-Pacific islanders ( Islands Southeast Asia) the Philippines is an "anomaly" in that part of the world because it is the most westernized. Filipinos do not understand that the "Asian" thing they think is "Asian" actually has its roots from the western colonial past which is also the solution in my opinion. The Philippines is a Hispanized and Americanized culture mixed with the diverse groups of people and cultures. For without Spain, your country will not exist. Another thing I disagree with Tagalog nationalists and academic leftist elite alike is that the negative colonial social construct they imagine coming from the west is the reason for the social problems. When they are really embedded in your culture. The Datu culture mentality. Which is an outdated mentality because it offers no growth but decay. While western style social structure from the colonial past may have contributed to further some of the negative socialization in Filipino society because of the divide in the social hierarchy to a certain extent. Your young people must not make the mistake that your oppressors these days are anyone "colonial". Sure, it can change. First start in socializing Filipinos to take care of their trash everywhere. Start small. Then go from there. Don't expect anything from the government. And no, Moses will not come to lead people out of slavery if you wait for it to happen. It will be more of the same. Understand that your people again voted the same group of people who destroyed everything of what was good and what could have been.

Hi Rubeauti. I have been living in Japan for about 15 years, and like the Philippines, there is much here that the west can learn from, especially how people think more about each other and not just about themselves. You are a wonderful example of a person who thinks about others first, which is something that used to happen in the US, but rarely does anymore. Yet, like the words and phrases you mentioned, the Japanese have a word, “Shoganai,” which means, “There’s nothing anyone can do about it.” And so, very little changes because very few complain or try to change the things that are wrong - especially endless bureaucracy that seems to go around in circles. The only way things will improve is if pressure comes from the people who fight for change. If no one speaks out, governments only become more entrenched in what works for government, not for the people. Keep doing what you are doing; awareness is the first step in all change, and everyone deserves to be respected. Gambatte!

I think an important step for anyone to better his/her own life is to realize that other possibilities exist. This is also true for a community or even an entire nation. It's very hard to see beyond one's own experiences, though. It takes a visionary like you, or several, to help people see that alternatives exist, and to realize injustice and inefficiency aren't things that should be accepted --- even though practically speaking they must be tolerated sometimes. (Our Department of Motor Vehicles is also not a place anyone enjoys going to. But after hearing about your experiences, I'm not going to complain about ours again.) I hope your channel is viewed extensively by your fellow Filipinos; as well as by foreigners who are interested in visiting, or perhaps living in, the Philippines. You're doing your countrymen a valuable service by talking about these issues and offering up the idea that things could be better. I agree with some other comments that you might want to consider becoming a politician. You obviously have the skills for it. The best politicians are often those who don't really want the job.

My wife & I spent most of our vacation trying to straighten out a deed in Masbate City. A judge had OK'd my father-in-law gifting me property even though I'm American (which is not legal). My sister-in-law STILL has to go to into town (a 2-hour ride on a motorcycle) every few months to try to straighten it out for once and for all. There's always some problem popping up. Corruption & 'kicking the can further down the road' instead of fixing problems are commonplace throughout the country. And yet the amazing Filipino population keeps smiling.

Hello from Belgium ! I have found myself at random diving in filipino culture. Indeed I have been in LDR relationship since 4 February this year and totally agree with your analysis. Frankly I do appreciate your country as well. I discovered your very informative channel a few weeks ago. One learn a lot when watching your very interesting youtube videos. This is the very first time someone like you analyses this topic under this prism or psychoanalytical view (cultural attitudes and beliefs, even spanish and american colonialism scars, etc.). I am from Congo-Kinshasa (very center of Africa) but I do subscribe to all you said 'cause it is in a large majority common traits or characteristics in most of developping countries. If you have the opportunity to discuss with some Africans who are intellectually honest they will recognize what you are saying about filipino culture is also roughly similar to african culture attitude facing authority and so on ! But Rubeauti as an intellectual young lady you are, tell me you have never ever been raised or grown up in any western countries as mentioned a viewer (@Airraicd) down below? A second question which maybe quite sensitive or a kind of "hot potato", before spanish christianism around 1521, what was the real filipino beliefs because we all know that filipino people did not wait for the Spaniards to teach them the existence of god or the Creator ? Rubeauti, believe me or not, this question is also valid for us or me as an African, because the Portuguese came in Congo-Kinshasa around 1482/83 with the christianism. Before the arrival of the latter we had our proper beliefs which is seen today by most of population (i.d. priests, pastors and authorities who studied in the West or are westernised) as a bad thing or witchcraft ! Some academics from Africa and Western countries label this phenomenom as an alienation or a kind of Stockolm syndrom. I will end up by this african proverb : "As long as lions don't have their own historians, hunting stories will always extol the glory of the hunters".

Thank you very much for this! You have really helped me to better understand my filipina wife. We live here in the U.S. and have been married for 9 years. I have often been confused about her response/reaction to many things as If she doesn't seem to care. I just assumed that it must be culture based, I guess I was correct. I am Afro-American (original black american) and "we" have been taught to RAISE HOLY HELL if need be. Regardless of what ANYBODY thinks in order to affect change if something is wrong. Which is why I could never understand why do Filipinos just tolerate a lot of stuff that they shouldn't in the PH. I used to criticize the PH for things being often sub-standard and question why do the people tolerate it. Now, thanks to you, I see the reason and the reasoning behind it all. My wife would never explain it to me. When I would ask her questions about the news on GMA Network. She would just say " I don't know" or "That's just the way it is". Thanks again for your enlightenment. I'm going to share this video with my wife. Take care. 😊

    Dear Rubeauti
a very touching and personal video.
I think that what you refer to being helpless is what I would call fatalism. Accepting your situation without attempting to change it. My experience is: it doesn't really matter how often you fall down as long as you get up one time more than falling down. Not sure if this is western thinking but I simply don't believe that things are as they are and cannot be changed. It takes a bit of courage and there is no guarantee that it will work, but if yu don't do anything for sure nothing can/will change. So should you ever be again in a situation where you feel helpless: try to be courageous and do not accept it as it is. And don't worry too much about what others may think about you: most importantly, you must be ok with what you think is best for you.
As for the apalling ignorance of PH authorities: shame on them for treating those who pay their salaries so badly. You are right to complain, but I understand it must be hard for you as it is against your asian culture. Be strong!

Genuine tears of anger!!!! Totally justified !!!!!! The people at that office can use some lessons in learning how to deal with customers. If they don't learn from their mistakes, how will they ever learn the correct way to work with customers. Management needs to learn the same lessons. Management should help their employees on dealing with difficult customers and try to calm the employee and the customer. Maybe even turn an unhappy customer into a happy customer. This will not work in some cases, but if you don't try, you will never know.

I believe this learned helplessness mindset can be traced back several centuries to when the Spanish (and later, the US) colonized the Philippines. There was an article I read that detailed the Padrino System of governance and how it has shaped the bureaucracy with red tape by design. Pakkisama is another term that was mentioned.....meaning, to go with the majority, don't question things. For significant change to take hold, its going to require more than just a change in thinking. More like a revolution that vets out all of the old order corruption and replace it with people who can set a course of change that will take several generations to become established.

True to life of our Filipino culture..we are indeed resilient people and easily adapt to changing situations.Your vlog is sureal and inspiring to all especially to the ones who are not in that culture of being privileged and feelimg entitled...living in the US for 45 yrs now I feel a lot of folks are so arrogant since they don't know how to be deficient in almost everything, they are so used to be comfortable in most levels in life.

Thank you for sharing your emotions about the disrespectful behaviors in your country.
Change will come about when you and all citizens rebell against the status quo. That is why Americans are more efficient though not perfect. Speak up and use social media to no longer accept the poor behaviors of your government and its agencies. Learned helplessness leads to hopelessness and depression.
Never give up the fight for respectful treatment by your government. It belongs to you and all the citizens of Philippines. Allow yourselves righteous indignation and do not stop openly criticizing bad behaving government officials.
God bless you for speaking up.

Thank you so much for this video. My parents were born in the Philippines and I was born here in Australia. After 30+ years being in Australia my parents still find it hard to say no or to openly disagree with something or someone. It frustrates me because they don’t seem to progress and don’t enjoy the freedoms that come from being openly critical to get what they truly want or need. They say the same thing, it is what it is, instead of standing up for what’s right and pursuing what is rightfully theirs. Thank you for listening hehe

I saw this in the hygienic aspects of the PI. 35 years ago they didn't have drinkable water at the faucet in the kitchen and still to this date most kitchens still don't have drinkable water. Every stream or river I saw had a milky hew to them and the banks of them smelt of sewer and strewn with piles and piles of trash, and still to this day 35 years later it is this way. The sewer is another thing that hasn't changed, open sewers, sewer water running into there rivers and streams, walking in sewer water after every heavy rain. These are just some of the basic of necessities that need to be corrected and that by saying what is is what is nothing gets corrected and nothing ever changes. If you could get one generation to make the change then things will change but until then it will always stay the same. I feel your Pain Rubeauti and just hope that some day the country as a whole will open their eyes to the changes that are needed.

Great video and outlines the attitude generally in the office. My partner transferred land into her name, she had to get up at 5 am, take two buses to get to the registration office by 8 am in the island. Take a number and join the queue. The computers were off line for 10 days, but no one knew when they would be operative again, she journeyed there everydsy along with many many others too. The system was very frustrating, it eventually was completed but with extra unnecessary expense.

Hey Rubeauti, lovely video as usual. I realized this with my Filipina fiancé and her family. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean (not to be associated in Trinidad in the Philippines lol).
I see with my fiancé's family that there are many things she cannot say as it would deem disrespectful in her family's eyes but when she's with me she feels so free. This video helped me understand more as to why. Salamat ^_^

Rubeauti, very moving presentation! So many times even here in the USA people struggle with learned hopelessness. People who have been beaten down and “hushed” but still want to speak up but don’t. We all struggle and it’s time we say enough is enough instead of it is what it is. I too struggle with the mentality of it is what is and feel like what is the use? Things will never change. Well maybe sometime we will be able to see the reality of changed attitudes and start to make a difference in this world and stop accepting, “It is what it is!”

When I was in the Navy I saw this done a lot and realized that there were two schools of thought when dealing with issues like that. 1. We've always done it that way meant someone on a corporate ladder told a subordinate to do something and they did it without ever knowing why or even how it was to be done and the process repeated whether it fixed the problem or not. 2. A person did understand what was being asked of them and found many different solutions and found the best solution and TAUGHT that and EXPLAINED THE REASON WHY it was done that way!!!!

Hi Rubeauti. This was a great topic and I here many Filipinos complaining about the same things. So far I have not encountered any of that kind of thing dealing with government type offices. The only thing I have had to deal with since arriving in the Philippines is getting a visa extension and I did that through a consultant so I would not have to go through a big run around to get it done. I will at some point have to go to get a drivers license and not looking forward to that. I have chatted with many Filipinos here and in Canada since I started coming here and watching a lot of video of the Philippines. I often hear about how bad it is to get anything done and how they seem to push you off to someone else. You are right is seems some don't even know their job or what the rules are and sometimes it seems they are making things up as they go. It also seems complaints fall on deaf ears. There needs to be changes in government officials but they don't listen and just keep doing things the way they have always been done. It is very sad when you have to go though so much crap just to get a drivers license renewed or replaced. That should be a very simple and straight forward thing to get done. The Philippines needs more people like you to push for change but I know it will never be easy. There needs be more learning and proper training for people when they get these jobs. I know things in the west are not perfect but the Philippine government could learn a few things if only they were willing to make changes in how things are done here but seems they don't really care. The only one I see that is getting away from how some things are done is the governor in Cebu. She was ahead of everyone else on the covid thing. A lot of people don't like progress but sooner or later you have to progress or get left behind the rest of the world. Keep up the good work. Keep smiling and stay safe

Thank you Rubeauti for your video ... Other saying I heard was "That's Life" and for confrontation, I do know a lot of filipinas that would be very confrontational to me when they do not get what they want...calling me names and inconsiderate or, selfish and not caring, when it is just asking for something unrealistic...to be exact money. It is true that Filipino processes are sooooo extremely disorganized. They put something together and never think of the consequences people go through. It is so much waist of money for many people just trying to get a simple thing done with anything. You are so right about so many things you covered here. It is very sad
