I am stunned by these sessions with Art Blackey, Lee Morgan and the great John Gilmore. There must be somewhere where I can get hold of this on cd or vinyl. The whole band is made up of outstanding musicians.
2:48 is my favorite part. I like how he plays those chromatic shapes off the pianists altered voicings. Gilmore was bad! I hear a story tha Coltrane came to one of his shows and ran to the stage during his solo yelling “ that’s it!! That’s it!! That’s the sound!! “
Coltrane called Gilmore and told him he was the only saxophonist left he was studying.... trane said that, so yeah Gilmore was THE man at tat time, since he went on to play with Sun Ra
Have you noticed that the Beeb annoyingly screwed up the audio on this broadcast at 0:49? Lee Morgan's trumpet is all wrong for a few seconds - a fragment of his solo seems to have got inserted at this point. I noticed this on my copy also.
WeSee Music The pianist is John Hicks and Bassist is Victor Sproles And Tenor the Great but sadly Forgotten John Gilmore. Gilmore and Sproles were Members of Sun Ra for long time. Trumpet the Great Lee Morgan and on Drums the Swingest and more percussive drummer ever the Fantastic Art Blakey.
Blakely MIGHT be the best leader in all of JAZZ hx outside of Satch, Duke and Basie and Nat King Cole ( Early Capitol years). On par with Oscar Peterson, Dizzy etc No stretch here. Blakely is a MONSTER! Waaay better leader than Miles, Manne and others. On par with Oscar Peterson too. Remember: So many artist Blakely led went on to become SUPERSTARS. Give Horace Silver his due to when he led with Blakely.
Absolutely one of the greatest. But seriously -- "way better than Miles" ??? I mean, first of all -- why even bother with a comment like that? They're two of the G.O.A.T -- along with Duke Ellington I'd say. No need to run anyone down to show your love. Second, and more important: Blakey’s music (like Ellington’s) didn’t really evolve a whole lot after a certain point - always great, but always more or less in a certain style. Miles was not only nurturing future leaders, but constantly evolving -- RESHAPING MUSIC itself for decades. Rollins, Trane, Cannonball, Hancock, Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Marcus Miller -- to name a few Davis alumni - were the guys who became leaders in their own right, and took music in new and radically different directions in the second half of the 20th Century..

John Gilmore was wonderful! Wonderful!
This is spectacular

John Gilmore au sax... Un très grand qui a influencé John Coltrane (bien que 5 ans plus jeune)... Tournée du milieu des années 60 avec Blakey...
This is so Godly 🙏🙏🙏💯
Just outstanding....my brother and I loved Art
The energy was just insane off the charts in those days...no current Jazz groups have this cosmic energy....its just passed

grahambop Yes, i noticed.
Gilmore and Morgan are perfect match for this music.
@9:05
Gilmore really has Trane chops....what an awesome group.
More mid to late Trane had Gilmore chops. He acknowledged that himself!
@@jibsmokestack1 thank u smokestack. Gilmore had HIS OWN chops and they were unsurpassed, by Trane or anyone else.
That glitch at 0:49 is annoying. Mars an otherwise wonderful performance video. Is there another version that can be found?
jzzft11 be thankful we have this !!!!! ❤️🎺
Es penca que este subido así, al parecer no hay otra
lol that glitch after a bong is not good I had to triple check that wasn't real Im telling you
Sent you a video post of the older version which is ok. TH-cam won't let me post the link in a comment apparently!
The trumpeter is Lee Morgan. Who is the saxophonist?
It's John Gilmore. Most of his work is with Sun Ra.

Studio version is by far better - Usually live versions are best
it's a different band on the studio version
They are both amazing we are blessed to hear Lee on both versions ! 🎺❤️
Cedar Walton its only in the studio versión
I prefer this version.
Prefer this because of Gilmore’s staccato motif laden style. Good to see him in a more straight ahead setting!
