I first herd Monk in Bologna at the end of the fifties when he came to play in a memorable concert. I also approached him but with no success. When I talked to him He didn't pay much attention: he kept looking around as if he was searching for something. No problem: his music said already everything! Since then he became one of my favourite jazz players. Today at 88 I heard for the first time his famous concert in Paris in 1967. I felt the same joy, excitment and search of dissonant beauty I felt that first time. A true unique genius!
Those kinds of memories really help keep us young at heart, glad you had those experiences to rest on as you continue to age gracefully. I've had a few memorable live concert experiences and cherish each and every one of them, mainly in the folk vein.

I see Oska-T on the playlist. That was for Oscar Treadwell. A legendary radio host who at that time lived in Philly, but spent the last 30 or 40 years in Cincinnati. He was a GOD!! Would teach his Jazz Appreciation claases over the radio. Might spend an entire night on just one piece. Playing different versions, telling the personel, teaching us how to listen. Then, maybe on Friday, hed give his test to his students. Okay, ( playing a recording) , Was this from November 1957 recordibg, or the April 1962 recording? Was the Bass Player Paul Chambers or Jimmy Garrison? And we kids would stay up ,taking in every word. Legend! I used to work along side his son. Who had zero interest in music. Anyway, The Cincinnati Conservative of Music has an entire fkoor just to hold Oscars record collection, with three staffers.
This legendary band somehow, inadvertently and unexpectedly changed the criteria for evaluating all types of contemporary musicians of their time, cleaned up the then world sound iconostasis, to force these same musicians to measure their talents and irreversibly their ability to surprise their environment 😛

Как будто совершилась Троянская война культур, и более нет ни Гекторов фортепиано, ни Ахиллесов альт трубы, ни Одиссеев саксофона. Пустота и мерзость запустения...

Listen to a Monk tune like "Evidence'" and after so many hearings, you'll suddenly realize, "My God, this is the old standard, 'Just You, Just Me'!" and you just won't believe how incredible it all is.
