John Gilmore is the man! A Chicago homeboy. I remember sitting up at the apartment lounge after the session with Von Freeman telling stories and his name came up many times.
Lee Morgan, one of the most iconic trumpeters of the 20th century. John Gilmore, one of jazz visionary Sun Ra's main "go-to" reed players for so many years. Art Blakey, a force of nature behind the drum kit as always. KILLER live set from these Jazz Messengers! Crowd was definitely blown away judging by their reactions, lol... :-)
Ahhhhh. Gilmore so under rated and possibly lost in that enormous wave of excellent and prestigious reedmen of that era. Lee, again so strong in both ideas and execution. Marvelous in keeping with the swing. History in the making and they didn't even know it. Thanks Corporal.
The fact that he played almost exclusively with Sun Ra is probably the reason why he was under rated. Sun Ra's band Arkestra never got the credit they deserved- not sure why. Record sales for the group were mediocre at best- and much of their live work was done over in Europe and in Asia. I recall reading once where the band members themselves had nothing more than pocket change once they returned to the U.S. from Europe after one of these grueling overseas tours.
Lee Morgan is my all time favorite musician... Gilmore just plays his fu*kin' ass off here! This is the absolute definition of post bop for me, Lee Morgan, and a great tenor player backed by Blakey, Hicks and Sproles. Incredible that this is almost a half Century ago. Wow.
@P X-101 I LOVE "Mr. Kenyatta," and a special place for "Morgan, The Pirate" which is to me, magic in 3/4 time - I love the changes in it. Morgan wrote a lot in 3/4, and it all swings hard.
"Andrew!" "Compulsion" - ANDREW HILL "'S Make It" - ART BLAKEY "Blowin' In From Chicago" - CLIFFORD JORDAN "From in to Out" - DIZZY REECE "Sounds from Rikers Island" - ELM HOPE "Today and Tomorrow" - McCOY TYNER "Feeling Blue" - PHIL UPCHURCH "The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard" "Turning Point" - PAUL BLEY In case you didn't have these already.
Outside of his wild ride in Space with Sun Ra, John Gilmore recorded some great music with Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill, Elmo Hope, Paul Bley, Dizzy Reece Quintet, George Russell Sextet, McCoy Tyner, drummer Pete La Roca which included Chick Corea and a terrific record with Cliff Jordan which included Horace Silver, Curly Russel and the great Art Blakey. Together with Lee Morgan this video is outstanding, thanks for posting.
Remember if you get the great music; you must also remember you also must deal with the prejudice, blatant racism and societal of those times. ( ( If you lived during those times) I did, in the 60's. Not all nice. Just a thought.
Dolphy is very unique I know it. But Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and John Gilmore is similar to Dolphy's potential, especially Gilmore's improvised music.
emilianoturazzi I think I misinterpreted this unique styles. I have just explored Jazz music and day to day I try to improve myself at understanding this valuable music. All of these spectacular musicians are so valuable.
Amazing footage of John Gilmore, luckily I was able to see him play with the Sun Ra Arkestra , but his Tenor Saxophone Tone is a force to be reckoned with..
Same lineup from the Jazz 625 TV show. Hoping this reappears with some better audio. Still this is a fantastic addition to the documented Messengers on film.
A solid but unorthodox configuration of the jazz messengers. Victor sproles is an unusual addition ,as is john hicks. But the frontline of Morgan and Gilmore is magnificent to say the least.
in 2009 a friend introduced me to sun ra's music. it's been 99% sun ra since for me. But I decided to check out John's other stuff today. It's groovy - fresh to me. what was his best non-sun ra stuff, in your opinion?
same personel as 's make it, except no curtis fuller? Art Blakey, drums Lee Morgan, trumpet John Gilmore, tenor sax Curtis Fuller, trombone John Hicks, piano Victor Sproles, bass
I really wish John would've stuck with Jazz instead of Sun Ra. The man, Mr. Gilmore was sooo talented that John Coltrane learned from him. I'm not knocking Sun Ra but i just didnt digg his stuff. This is the John i love..
I think Gilmore could have had a great career as a solo artist but he chose to stick with Sun Ra. One thing that I like is that Sun Ra's music is really out there, but Gilmore's solos were pretty inside and I think it made for a nice contrast, the music was avant guard but Gilmore kept it funky and swinging,he stayed true to his style,he didn't try to play all this out stuff like Pharoah Sanders or Archie Shepp. He was a really fine player,Coltrane loved him.
Lee Morgan and woody Shaw are two of my favorite jazz musicians of all time, and Johnny Gilmore is an overlooked great.

Missing from this era?
He played with Sun ra from the 50's, and appeared in all of his albums

@@bigbass421 If I had Billy Higgins' killing 3/4 grooves on my recordings, I'd write in 3/4 too ! ! ! ! ! !
What a Sound John Gilmore had I wish we had more recordings with him.
"Andrew!" I mean, most of the Sun Ra discography.
John Gilmore a Sun Ra Favorite. John Gilmore a John Coltrane Favorite.
The great John Gilmore. That's it!

uh hum… IN ADDITION TO his wild ride in Space with Sun Ra, etc etc
The Immortal John Gilmore!
John Gilmore- legend!! Big influence on Trane.
fuuuk i didnt even know this thank so much shit i been missing so much but now i am learning from this amazing tenorist thanks
Porobably one of the best Jazz Messenger groups...in my opinion...they had the Trane vibe going bigtime...the energy is insane
Wish I had lived in this time period but I was just being born. Now I know why my mom loved jazz so much! Beautiful 😍

The sound and image quality are amazing!!!! Thanks a lot, what a joy :-)))
Thank you for sharing. This is amazing. Gilmore playing inside and some of Lee's best soloing.
amazing video ..gilmore and lenny !
Great rare footage and quality, this front line was short lived and unbelievable, too bad so short. Thanks for posting.
Hard bop doesn’t get much harder than that Lee Morgan solo
This is my favorite Jazz messengers lineup with the incomparable John Gilmore on Tenor Saxophone so underated !! ✌👌🎷🎺🎹
John Coltrane + Eric Dolphy style = John Gilmore.
Batı (TDTB) Dolphy? I can't listen to any similarity with Dolphy in Gilmore's playing - especially here....
Dolphy is very unique I know it. But Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and John Gilmore is similar to Dolphy's potential, especially Gilmore's improvised music.
Batı (TDTB) I point out his works with Sun Ra
Coltrane is very unique too. His ''sheets of sound'' ...
emilianoturazzi I think I misinterpreted this unique styles. I have just explored Jazz music and day to day I try to improve myself at understanding this valuable music. All of these spectacular musicians are so valuable.
When it comes to dynamics, Mr Blakey had such an ear.
yeah!
All of Blakey’s lineups are top notch, but this might be my favorite one. Morgan and Gilmore together is such an intense listening experience.
Close!
Amazing footage of John Gilmore, luckily I was able to see him play with the Sun Ra Arkestra , but his Tenor Saxophone Tone is a force to be reckoned with..
Love this!
This band had it all.
Lee Morgan + Art Blakey is da shit.
I never had the pleasure of a meet with Mr. Morgan, but imagine Chica
I'm a Chicagoan. Blake and John I knew. More incredible people than musicians!
Just Great!
THNX Dom¡¡¡¡
im so glad im here, i had to scroll through many videos of toenail removal to get here.
These cats beat the astronauts to the moon!
Nice upload, thanks!
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check out Lee Morgan's album "Search for the New Land"
Wonderful album👍🎺
Check out your ass
I have to go with The Procrastinator as one of LM's best.
Just listen, watch and dig!
Same lineup from the Jazz 625 TV show. Hoping this reappears with some better audio. Still this is a fantastic addition to the documented Messengers on film.
Blakely is driving these men. Blakely is Superbaaaaaad!
Morgan and Gilmore have the tightest sounding harmony here. Ive heard nothing like it
Whew!
Lee Morgan being Lee Morgan, a Badd Man.
This is the best fucking shit that have ever been inside my ears!
Good Morning Ms. Wade....#Dis
Lee Killed it
Lee was the best hard bop trumpet player at that time. What a tragedy he was killed!
Leonard seed by who
Rockey Lolo nvm
Ah! Big John!
Lee Morgan's on trumpet, heard him from some live recordings at the black-hawk from some library recordings. Great player.
Oh yes oh yes
As great a virtuoso as these legendary musicians are Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley and of course Wayne Shorter were *awesome* *prolific* composers. 👌🏽
Thars so blasting
que locuraaaa
John Hicks.
A solid but unorthodox configuration of the jazz messengers. Victor sproles is an unusual addition ,as is john hicks. But the frontline of Morgan and Gilmore is magnificent to say the least.

These guys are baad!
All that on a stuffy ass Conn 8B, that’s what real players sound like, not the clowns of today trying their hardest to sound like Lee and Freddie.
