    Fantastic Video! You ut it oh so well when you said "Its not the notes you play so much as the shape of the space between them" ... well ... i think you said something akin to that ! lol. And it was extraordinarily well said!! The SPace bewteeen the notes combined with the Tone itself, and the note, and the dynamics applies ( especially for a bass guitar player!) makes all the difference... All those classic 1970s and 80's Funk bass lines are a fantastic example of this! Bootsie COllins often talks about how James Brown showed him how to work the "1 " beat!

    Hi, just stumbled across your channel. Though EDM at large is not my turf, it's brilliantly explained ! You mentioned the subsequent 37 in you setup section, but what is it used for musically ? I hear second, lower bass than the 303, is that correct ? Thanks

      I'm layering basslines and adding bass notes on strategic points in the measure ;)

  • @4lpina
    @4lpina ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your videos, there's just something very pleasant about the way you make them.
    Two quick questions:
    1. I recall you said you don't use side chain. How do you make sure your kick and bassline do not interfere with each other? Or you don't put bass notes on same steps as kick?
    2. Notice you mute sounds from mixer and not from sequencer. Is it matter of convenience or there's more to that?

    • @AnalogKitchen
      @AnalogKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi 4lpina, thanks for watching and thanks for the questions:
      1. The frequencies do clash but I made sure that the sound have enough punch in the higher harmonics too. That way the overlap is noticeable but not harmful. A little cross over isn’t harmful.
      2. I want to be fast when I decide on something. Whether it be a last second decision to actually mute or solo something. And this is the fastest way. Other methods would mean you’d have to CC program a controller and that is prone to faults occasionally

  • @Dekkie61

    I am trying to build a live set with 2 mates and I have a question about bass layering. We often have issues with overlapping bass frequencies. In your groove video the bass tracks don't overlap, but here they do (303, akai, kick, tom). How do you manage your bass spectrum and prevent frequency clashes in such a situation?

    • @AnalogKitchen
      @AnalogKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The simplest solution is really going surgically into what sounds you choose. None of the sound you hear me use are eq’ed or compressed by me so it’s done to transient heavy content on your sounds and meticulously leveling the sounds. My frequencies do clash, but because of the sounds I use um you only notice the hood parts of the sound. Believe me it really is that simple

    • @Dekkie61
      @Dekkie61 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnalogKitchen thanks man!
      Would I be correct in assuming that TB303 often pairs fine with other bass sounds due to it's specific sound characteristics?

    Do you have videos on how you program TB-03 like this pattern? Sounds like it's a 3 bar sequence but I could never get that classic acid bassline.

    • @JH-lo9ut
      @JH-lo9ut ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey are you sure you don't mean a 3 step sequence?
      Or do you mean triplets?
      You can program both on the 303 and clones like it.
      Three step sequences will create a polymeter, since the notes will fall on different places in the 4/4 drum pattern as it loops.
      Triplets is when three steps on the synth pattern is timed over four steps on the drum pattern.
      The triplets will fall in the same place in the pattern, but offset from the 4/4 if that makes any sence.
      Both can be used to great effect on the 303. Triplets gives you a very psytrance kind of feel but it is also used in acid techno.
      I think you can find guides of how to do this if you search for "303 pattern length" and "303 triplets"
      Better than me trying to explain it in text.
      Oh and if you really meant 3 bar sequence, that can be done too!
      This is called "pattern chaining".
      My tip is to experiment with some really short and simple patterns. It will help you understand how timing and meter effects the rythm.

      @@robertbrook439 The TD-3 is good but in stock form it has a very staccato sound compared the original TB-303's 'liquidy' sound between notes. There are plenty of mods for the TD-3 to get much closer to the TB-303 sound. The 'rubber mod' works a treat. The TD-3 is still fun without the mods and cheap enough to experiment on if you're handy with a soldering iron.

    The sound is fine - many synth can make similar sounds these days. The flaw is in the sequencer interface - it's still stuck back in the days when this device was made and for me just isn't conducive to being productive since I'm fighting the interface the whole time.

    • @electro-soma
      @electro-soma ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the original TB-303 and some of the clones are archaic to program. Some love it because it leads to happy accidents. I much prefer using a modern sequencer like on the affordable Roland T-8. Random functions are great because you still get the happy accidents that you can tweak but with a user friendly sequencer.

    • @AnalogKitchen
      @AnalogKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was hard as hell to program indeed and had that ‘to cool for school’ appeal which you can sometimes see within the modular synth community. When you got it and someone else did not, you felt like Dolemite. I enjoy the tb03 for its step programming. Might even do a vid on this too

    Ik vind de distortion in de tb03 redelijk corny. Je zou eens een TT-303 (v2) kunnen proberen (als je dat nog nooit gedaan hebt). Die sequencer is heel goed met on the fly improvisatiefuncties als damp, hammer, slide en accent zonder ze te hoeven vastleggen in de sequence. En een arpeggiator die een arpeggio kan maken van een sequence (aangezien je arpeggio-fan bent). Hoe dan ook, ik geniet van je jams, cheers.
