  • 92FT 125-YEAR-OLD WOODEN SAILBOAT. This couple has been living onboard for 35 years
Living and working on a 125 year old wooden sailboat is something else. David and Penny have saved this beautiful classic top sail schooner Rhea of Nyborg from the scrapyard after it had sunk over 35 years ago. They refitted it and got it ready for charter and have been sailing around the Mediterranean ever since! Rhea is currently stationed in Lakka on the island of Paxos, Greece. Hop onboard for this interview and if you are interested to join David and Penny for a real-life adventure contact them on:

I have the offer to buy a 96ft schooner built in the 1900’s. Beautiful woodwork and original beams. One mast was cut off and all the sails are lost but the standing rigging is still there. I want so badly to purchase it and do a refit and go sail the world. It would be me and my wife with our two children 7 and 8 years old. If I can find a way to rig it so just the two of us can raise the sails I would do it. So many dream killers keep telling me a ship that size can’t be sailed by two adults . You prove everyone wrong:) if I buy it I’ll keep you posted! Good luck!

The sailing part can be done, although you must also think about the times when the weather goes to shit. These people are in a marina every day and only go out in nice days. That’s something completely different from sailing the world. Also get a very thorough survey before buying any old wooden boat. Most are rotten if not take. Good care off and are worth almost nothing when all the needed work is calculated. A 96ft wooden boat also requires an immense amount of maintenance both in time and money. So if you really want to go sailing around the world I would look for something smaller and simpler. Always happy to discuss more!

@@Boatlifeisbest absolutely! Time and money is the key. A little backstory. The owner has died from a auto immune disorder so the marina will give me the boat under restriction I have a plan. The ship has been rebuilt underneath by the last owner, with a 4 inch concrete and rebar integrated structure, then he was in the beginning of plating it with steel for heavy ice expedition. It has a brand new Perkins diesel, restored interior and weighs approximately 100 tons. I am 46 years old, retired building and fabricator. I have residual income from rentals and other property investments. I am 6ft 4 and wanted a boat with better headroom. This ship is has 6ft 7 headroom on 60% throughout. I am purchasing river front access to the Pacific Ocean that has 120’ of grandfathered dock so I won’t have docking fees or expensive marina insurance. I’m trying to cover my bases but i don’t know what’s ahead, difficult to perfectly plan for it. Experience and wisdom from folks like you is invaluable. You have truly given me a smile of hope! Thank you!

This is incredible. I wish I had the cash to handle something like this. Owning that old of a big boat must come with a ton of responsibility
