I really enjoyed watching this. This is the method I used on the past 2 quilts I made. Saw another channel teach this method but they didn't include the hand stitching to the corners which I think is fabulous! Now I see why it's hard to do this method on the squares I'm making. Going to work with the method you ladies showed in the other video and just do my best. Luckily I'm making the quilts for a church sale to raise money for Missions.
I absolutely LOVE you two. So clear and easy. This is my go to site for lessons. I am a sewer from long ago but have forgotten so much. Now that I am older and disabled I am picking it back up. Great for someone like me who can't get around for classes. Thanks a bunch!
I just used this for my 4th out of 7 quilts for my grandkids. It is so clear and easy to follow! I am a beginner, self taught. I'd never have managed without you!! Thanks so much!
They took points off of my quilt at our last fair because I didn’t miter my corners! I did mine just as you are demonstrating. I spent a year doing the embroidery within. So I got a second place in my category. Sold the quilt at auction for my church. It’s all good☺️
So sorry. We should have had quilting in home ec class. Grrr. I love the challenge but it's the hardest physical and mental work in my old age. I'll never get to compete and win unless I get the "creativity" award (cool idea, bad work). See this vid is old. Hope you won a first prize since then by conquering the mitering!🙋
Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing me this. Currently, have 4 quilts to finish binding on, 3 of quilts of Valor. Will be saving and watching again! Many times over!
Great help! One idea I use for joining the end strips to each other: fold back one end an inch, trim and tuck the other end inside the folded side and attach as usual. Much less fiddly.
Why oh why didn’t I watch and follow this video before trying to do binding! Aside from trying to get those final two pieces joined after sewing around the quilt these instructions are spot on. First time ever that my binding looks almost flawless! Thanks for the great information!
Thank you so much, Ladies, for you clear directions and demonstration of binding a quilt. I'm starting out, and I feel I have a good lesson to make and attach a binding. I love that I can look back at this and stop and replay a portion it if I need to.
Thank you so much for this informative video on binding and finishing a quilt. I am new to quilting and have searched and watched many different clips on binding. But that is all they show. I needed to know how to finish off a quilt completely. Then I found you guys and I am so happy. Thanks again.
Wow I am so thankful for your tutorial. It helped me so much with binding. I had been struggling with joining the binding ends together and finally with this tutorial I was able to make it work. Thank you!
I love this video and it’s my go to for binding . But, I always end up crossing the two the wrong way and it doesn’t flip over nicely to cut the tails and I have to rip and do again. Any help hints on how to remember how you cross the two right sides together to sew the seam correctly?
Excellent instructions on joining the two ends. Just did it on my binding of my quilt and it turned out PERFECT! I like this finished look much more than other ways of doing it. Thanks!!
Thanks so much for the video. I had learned to do this type of binding from a video before this one. It might have been one of your videos, but this time, I learned something new. The last detail of lining the tails of binding up: with the gap, marking both tails with a small dot and drawing the line on the fabric. Thanks, thanks, thanks!. That will save me from the guess work and give me a more precise stitching line. I simple cannot thank you enough!
One suggestion I have for wrangling the quilt while joining the ends together is to fold the unbound quilt between the ends and use a large Wonder Clip to hold it in place. This makes sewing the ends together so much easier. I always do this when binding my quilts.
Thank you for this incredibly helpful tutorial...I'm almost finished with my first lap/throw quilt...and I was really struggling with getting the binding right.
Very helpful tutorial:) I was taught by my (very forceful) patchwork tutor that binding must be cut on the bias with the longest strips possible, sewnit on like bias binding - incredibly time consuming and wasteful of fabric.
There is still a group of very traditional quilters who may still use this method and that's fine, but cost and time have forces many of us to adapt our methods and finish more quilts:)
Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks. Binding can be intimidating! I love the quilt behind you, especially the stars at the corners of the blocks. I am making a quilt for my grandson and would love to use that pattern. Do you have that pattern available?
I've no teachers but you tube, so I can only ask y'all. My original makes came from a Fons & Porter Halloween mag and they came out nice (for a first try, fantastic!😁). 2 questions. 1. Can you make straight binding (Not bias) if you are sewing the binding on w a binding presser foot? Bc the edges would have to be turned under first or they would fray. This would make a bulky edging, especially over the joining seams. Is there another way to do it other than sewing one side to the front and hand sewing the other to the back? And wouldn't you still have to make a little hem on the back to keep the edges of the binding from fraying? 2. I understand the concept of joining but I can't get the part where you are turning the binding over and twisting it to get the sides together. Are both sides twisted the same? Does it matter? Is there a way or a tool or something to get this part of the binding to turn out w the right sides right and the seams going in the right direction? Sorry to be so thick but I'm a certified genius w ZERO mental manipulation skills. I struggle w all facets of sewing quilt pieces, etc together but persevere bc I'm determined to build some of these skills. The frustrating thing is that I sewed clothes and crafts for decades but run into whole new challenges w quilting. (Like, it's not a suit from a Ralph Lauren pattern so it's not made in neutrals w everything matching!)
When adding your binding, how far away from the edge do you start. I noticed that you are not right on the edge. I love how yours always turns out. That's for a great tutorial on how to do binding.
Brenda Krigner-Himmelrick I think you were asking about how far to set the binding "in" from the edge of the quilt correct? I place my binding an "1/8" of an inch in. Your question wasn't about the corners correct? hope this helps.
small Omnigrid ruler are available at any quilt shop or online. This one can be for cuttting pieces and squaring up blocks. www.shopfonsandporter.com/product/Square-Up-Ruler/fabric-and-notions-rulers-and-templates
I've been using a similar method of binding, but not drawing the line and I cannot tell you how many times jack and I have had discussions about where that line is. Mostly I do it the wrong way and I won't say how many times, before getting it right. This make is sooo much simpler! I did not hear in the video how much extra batting is being left around the edge of the quilt. Doesn't look like a lot...1/8"??
I wish I could, but its an older fabric and I'm not sure - we made the video 2 years ago and I don't have the selvage edge on any of my pieces - sorry:(
The pre-made blanket binding is done completely different. Sorry I'm slow to reply. Open the binding apply one edge to the back side of the quilt. (place it so that you are "top stitching" the binding in place with your quilt back facing "up" and the binding laying with the right side also "up"). Now turn to the right side, encasing the raw edge of your quilt inside the fold of the binding. Stitch again on the right side of your project to secure the binding. You will need to manipulate the corners to create mitered corners and stitch them to secure the fold.
Teresa - I apologize is this seems clumsy. We tried to make it look smooth. Every quilter finds a binding technique that works for them. To be honest, I use a method I learned from another quilt show that used to air on HGTV. This just happens to be the way that Liz and Marianne taught and it is still the magazine's "method".
If you cut your binding 2 1/4 do you sew a 1/4" and hand sew from there? If you cut your binding 2 1/2 do you sew 3/8". What is the professional way in which the judges are looking for?
No matter what width of binding you cut, the seam allowance remains 1/4" Judges preference does vary. The state fair competition in Iowa they want all mitered corners neatly stitched closed and hand stitching done with short stitches, smooth, without puckers or wavy edges. Encourage you to always finish with your best work:)
Why are your edges of the quilt and raw edges of the binding not matching exactly. It looks like you maybe have 1/4 inch there. Please tag my name in your reply. Thank you!!
Your video on binding is the best. I go back to it for each quilt. Other videos on binding don’t always make sense to me but yours does! Thank you🎉

I'm a new quilter and watched many of the videos on binding.....I thought yours was the best by far. THANKS!!
Thanks - our goal is to educate in a fun setting, with best practices - as if I were sitting next to you and showing how to do a technique.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing me this. Currently, have 4 quilts to finish binding on, 3 of quilts of Valor. Will be saving and watching again! Many times over!
This is a great video! I used this technique to bind a hem on a maxi dress, it works for all sorts of applications. Thank you ladies!
Neat
Very terrific education! You are the best 2 women that performs a wonderful video for bidding, the way I love it! Thank you both!

I love how you show how "fiddley " it is joining the binding.
Thank you. A wonderful presentation 👏
I learned to do that at my quilt club. Nice and neat!
Great video. I am a beginner and am starting off with potholders. This helped me so much with the binding process.
Thanks - easy to understand ... now if it is this easy to do I'll be in hog heaven!
This was so helpful. I am about to bind my first quilt and this was by far the best video I found. Thank you!

Thank you, its a great video. I tried your way and it works out great. Sew easy too
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you.
No can't quilt anymore thank you
Best video on this!!!
thank you...this was so easy and fast....
Great video. Thanks for doing this video. Do you sew the edges
of the quilt together before binding?
So for a 1/4 inch seem allowance and 1/4 binding border how wide of strips do I cut?
they never say
very good tutorial. thanks a lot! you both are so awesome :-)
Thank you so much 😊 that was a great 👍 tutorial
I love the way you finish and join!
Awesome tips. I'm wondering if i can use quilting rulers with brother sewing embroidery SE400 machine.

Very helpful!

Great video! Can you tell me how wide you cut your binding strips? Thank you.
Usually the magazine calls for 2-1/4" strips. When I was learning to quilt I used 2-1/2" strips - quilters choice:)
@@6quilter4 Thank you so much! I keep rewinding, wondering if I missed the measurement! lol

How thick are the binding strips??
What is the name of the sewing foot you use?

What model Baby Lock machine is used in this video?
Hi Capri - it's a Baby Lock Symphony. :)
Thank you!!
What sewing foot are you using..
Hello - you will normally use a walking foot to sew binding onto your quilts. :)
I could not figure out the last step with matching up the dots. And I got pen ink on my quilt. :-(
How do you know how wide to cut your binding?
Binding traditionally is cut 2-1/4" wide, but many also will make it as wide as 2-1/2".
Thank you.

Why are your edges of the quilt and raw edges of the binding not matching exactly. It looks like you maybe have 1/4 inch there. Please tag my name in your reply. Thank you!!
Thanks mam
It would be a good idea to say how wide it should be,
Unfortunately, the quarter inch gap caused my quilt to buckle up.
woow
I have never seen that method for joining the binding ends. Interesting technique, but seems a little too "involved".
Turn that music down it blow my eardrums
i think if you need four hands to make a. binding it is not easy. I prefer Jenny.
This seems really fumbly. Just overlap the ends by exactly the width of your binding. Sew across that point to point and it's done.
you never say how wide to cut the binding!!!
