I feel it’s important to point out that while a catalytic converter does reduce CO emissions, the main purpose of the design is actually to reduce smog emissions. Smog is a catch-all term for oxides of nitrogen (NOₓ) which are a medley of molecules formed during combustion which consist of a nitrogen atom bonded with various numbers of oxygen atoms, hence the ‘x’ in the name. The key to the cat’s function lies in bond energies of molecules, and the triple covalent bond in NOₓ molecules have much a much higher bond energy than the double bonds in CO, CO₂ O₂, N₂, and other common exhaust products. To remove the NOₓ molecules, the cat media reacts with the exhaust gas by becoming extremely hot, reaching temperatures comparable to the combustion chamber where the NOₓ was formed. Since it takes the same amount of energy to break the bonds as it does to form them, the NOₓ molecules disassociate into monoatomic nitrogen and oxygen as they pass through, and when they exit the cat the temperature drops below what would be required for NOₓ molecules to re-form. The result is a significant decrease in smog emissions and the presence of smog is the smell the emits from a cat-less setup.
70 percent of all emissions are made by less than 100 corporate companies and how many catalytic converters have you seen on jetliners or any airplane and they still use leaded fuel as well 😮
I've ran an Invidia catless j-pipe and a resonator delete on my 17' WRX for over year now because I really wanted that "diesel" spool sound. I've never had any boost creep oddly enough and have always been aware of the cons of running the set up. Then again this car has been through absolute hell and it's a miracle it's even running still lmao
Its also important to note what hardware comes in the box with certain downpipes. Sometimes a cheaper downpipe will be missing a gasket or resuse bolts that were already on the car instead of new hardware.

I just got the Invidia catless downpipe and it's amazing. More flames, pops and noise. I had a Grimmspeed look-alike and I ran into a fitment issue because the internal wastegate was hitting a flange on the downpipe. EWG coming in the future...

BOOST CREEP FIX!!! I used to own a 2003 WRX and then a 2004 STi. There is a fix we used to do on those for boost creep on a STOCK TURBO. We would enlarge toe orifice on the wastegate. I did several of them for other people too. When you have the downpipe off of the turbo you remove the clip and rod from the wastegate valve. Open the valve and grind a VERY SMALL amount off the wastegate hole and keep it round. You can always take off more, you can never put it back. if you take too much material off you won't get enough boost. Solved the creep issue on my STi with a catless downpipe and many others too.
Great video. Can't wait for the ewg video need one for my car as I have a grimmspeed limited catted downpipe but still having boost creep issues on my car

I’m very glad I subbed to you, you definitely know what you’re talking about through all of your videos. I was told by my local tuning shop to get a catted J-pipe, is that a down pipe still? Is it basically just another way of saying downpipe?
Bro, 100% video 👌👌. I bought a bottom range 09 wrx hatch. Nothing done to it. All I've done is 3" turbo back decat. STI style rear muffler been cut open and all the crap removed. Welder back up. Took housing off oem air filter front part to reviel filter. Half inch spacer last joint before rear muffler. Got the rumble, got the turbo spool sound, got natural pop and bang through gear change. Keep up the good work, Love the videos. Wanted to see if you are considering installing aftermarket seats for the WRX/STI or the BRZ and of course making a video?
Good info! I may add - If you want to run an OEM VFxx turbo on a catless downpipe, I recommend porting the internal wastegate (which is what I did on my car) It’s a simple process. Remove your turbo, take off the wastegate actuator, and remove the V-band clamp that attaches the exhaust housing. Use a mallet and remove the exhaust housing, being careful not to damage the turbine wheel. Take a Dremel and a grinding bit, and round off the corner that leads exhaust gas to the wastegate. DO NOT ENLARGE THE WASTEGATE HOLE, you’re simply smoothening the hard edge that leads to the wastegate. This encourages exhaust flow out the wastegate instead of going through the turbine. There are a few videos and forum posts on this process, so do your research. I’m on a VF48 e85 at 20 psi, never had an issue with creep. A 3-port EBCS might help, but there’s nothing that can truly eliminate creep other than having a larger wastegate Last and most important, GET A REAL TUNE 🤣
I want to buy a cobb catted non resonated 3” j pipe/downpipe. Does replacing stock downpipe cause any reliability issues and or engine damage? A dealer said yes but everyone on the internet says no?

Regarding ceramic coating the down/j pipes: I'm assuming there's some specialized coatings for that specific purpose? Or does the plain old ceramic/graphene coating usually for the paint work the same? ✌
@@Smeedia ✌️ parts going on this weekend so I'll have to look into alternatives to address the heat post install. Maybe some heat resistant sleeves on hoses near the jpipe.
@@Smeedia oh ok, because a tuner told me if you're full bolts in, like upgraded turbo, E85, exhaust, intake, intercooler etc that a catless makes a huge difference
I have a 2016 Mustang EcoBoost, Deleted muffler's, Resonator delete, Stock turbo, aftermarket intercooler, Cobb accessport tune by PDtuning Stage one with bubbler tune, Knowing that this tune can harm the catalytic converter, I would like to know if running a high flow catalytic converter Would I still have BoostCreep?
Having the cat will help to significantly reduce the amount of boost creep you'll see, but not fully eliminate it. The only way to truly eliminate boost creep is by utilizing an EWG. But you would see very very minimal creep with the set up on your mustang
@@Smeedia What do you recommend? To do so i can run a down pipe or you think running a high flow would be fine without having to think about creepboost

how much louder would you say a catless dp is than a catted dp? my sti has a catted dp with an invidia cat back and it sounds good but i want to make it a bit louder, was thinking a tomei could help too.
So my cat has gone bad. I’m at 155,000 miles on the car…anyways, what should I do?? Spend 2k on a new cat? Or go catless then if I do, do I have to get a tune?? Help thanks
Found a used Invidia divorced down pipe and a turbo XS non divorced down pipe both have high flow catts, just wondering which would be better and if I need to run a wastegate with the divorced or not

Just left a microbiology research lab... Cool job, I'm a chemist. Environmental work is what I specialize in.
Nice, recently left mine as well. Mainly did growth cultures and CFU counts though lol. Environmental work is interesting, what type of chemistry?
how did you squeeze your car into taht garage
Might be stupid question. But if I go catless... And get headers with external waisgates, will that work as the waistgates for boost creep?
Damn so I need a protune for a catless? I’ve been using stage 1+ OTS this whole time
Yessir, catless on ots will have overboosting issues
@@Smeedia would a boost controller fix that issue?
No. Only fix would be an EWG to completely mitigate the issue
Another great video! Keep it up!
Thank you! 😁
thoroughly well explained thanks!
What about power? Does catless downpipe pipes more power than a catted one if you're full bolts on?
Differences are negligible on most atreet cars. Maybe a 2-3 HP difference than using a quality Cat
TBH you should be fine with a cat. You'll have minkr boost creep that is manageable and shouldn't cause crazy spikes like a costless one would
Is changing the down pipe legal, in california? Mine got dented and I need to swap it out :(
I think Cobb is making a CARB legal one 👌
Great video again appreciate the info🤙
Appreciate the support and anytime!
I have an Invidia Q300 and the stock downpipe on my 2009 Impreza WRX currently.
I’m a little nervous about emissions (I want to go Catted) and also sound laws in Massachusetts are WAY more strict
Catted with a resonator and a muffler and you should be okay on the sound aspect 🤙
Will custom fabricators make custom catless downpipes? Can’t seem to find any online
Most of them will
So what happens when the ots tune recommends a cattless Downpipe?
To my knowledge no OTS Tunes suggest using a carless downpipe, especially with thr EPA Crackdown
I have a gr supra and I want to install a catless Downpipe, do I still need the EWG you were talking about in the video? Because the supra comes with electronic waste gate that suppose to keep the boost in check.
Thank you 😄
Ideally yes, but I belive electronic wastegates are still subject to boost creep. It's more of a mechanical limit then anything
how much louder would you say a catless dp is than a catted dp? my sti has a catted dp with an invidia cat back and it sounds good but i want to make it a bit louder, was thinking a tomei could help too.
A wee bit louder not crazy crazy louder
Just discover this channel and really like it! Which video does he talk about pros/cons of voiding a warranty? Asking for a friend 😝
Lol the warranty video should answer those questions for ya 😉 appreciate the support 🙌😁
I'm confused now )) If I do not want to spend a lot for a catted one, will a catless just eventually fck up my Turbo ?
Well if you’re gonna, buy asap. EPA has cracked down on down pipes. Fewer and fewer shops are selling them
We need more pics of this wrb sti, looks awesome
Thank you 🙌😁
I keep getting boost creep on a stock 2021 sti
Catback exhaust running the
Stage 1 91 octane ACN tune
It’s nice to find a channel based in Washington
There's a couple of us on here 🙌😁
Great video really informative
So my cat has gone bad. I’m at 155,000 miles on the car…anyways, what should I do?? Spend 2k on a new cat? Or go catless then if I do, do I have to get a tune?? Help thanks
Alr3ady have an accessport? 👀
@@Smeedia no sir. Bone stock
Either a new stock downpipe or if it were me I'd snag a Cobb downpipe and accessport 👀
@@Smeedia thank you for your advice mate
Another question for you. So I’d I go COBB catted downpipe should I also get an intake ?do I need a tune?
Found a used Invidia divorced down pipe and a turbo XS non divorced down pipe both have high flow catts, just wondering which would be better and if I need to run a wastegate with the divorced or not
I always use the open bell mouth, I do not recall off of the top of my head but the differences between the two were not noticeable. I would snag whatever one is cheaper in price
I have a 13 wrx with Cobb airbox intake and a perring turbo inlet , as well as perrin aos . Am i boost creeping if I am getting 18.50 psi on Cobb stage 1+ 91 arizona tune .has muffler and resonator delete with stock down pipe .???
OTS Tunes may cause that, definitely would suggest snagging an Etune
@@Smeedia how do i do that? I love your channel by the way
Is there a good tune i should go with ?who do you recommend
Look up delicious tuning and they can work with you to get a custom tune made for your car 😁
When you buy a catless downpipe for your WRX when you had no idea what boost creep was and now want to question your existence and also question if you can throw 30 lbs of boost at your ej20
Send it with full boost!!! Jk, just keep an eye on your PSI, in the wknter is when you'll really see it start to creep
This may be a dumb question.. will a catted down pipe not give me that backfire sound ? 🥺
It still will just not as much 😢
