HAPPY TEXTURE TUESDAY and THANK YOU for being hair with me, all of you who joined the live premiere! If i missed your question, please drop it in this comment section. I'm excited to get back to regular programming (although i did not let the broken arm stop me)
Please be wise with your wrist. If you don't do "as your toled" you will get permanent damage. We love you ALOT, Mell. We will be patient. I dare say WE, because I can feel this community s love towards you, in the comments. LOTS OF LOVE ❤️
I really liked how you showed us how you parted your hair and the flat iron technique to get the look. So beautiful. Love your videos! They are so detailed and educational.
Mell, you are the absolute best! 🕉💟 My friends & family can’t believe the hair transformation I’ve had over the last couple of years, thanks to youuuuu and Amanda! We all love ya!
Growing up I didn't put product in my hair when I applied heat to it. I've learned and emphasized from this video the importance of applying a heat protectant prior to heat application
MEL! I have an interesting topic! I couldn't figure out why my hair was constantly frizzy and not behaving no matter how close I followed the curly hair rules and used the proper products. I bought a Dyson dryer and that helped...but my hair would still go a frizz. ..UNTIL..I bought a water softener shower head and it's a total game changer!! We have hard water and apparently that has lots of bad things that help dry out hair. Many damaging minerals and chlorine will make it impossible to get soft, frizz free curls. Anyways, thought you might find that interesting!
Omg I never even considered that applying a heat protector between every heat applied. Wow you look absolutely fabulous!!!!!!! It proves that you can safely straighten your hair. Just wish I could afford a Dyson product.
I actually straightened my hair this past Saturday and used my dyson and the comb attachment but wish I had waited until Texture Tuesday! 😀 Congrats on being castless, Mel!
Yes! Another way to use my Dyson. Great tip about reapplying oil. I never knew this was allowed! BTW, about Dang Time that Dyson partnered with your amazing self!
I haven’t straightened my hair in YEARS and now you’re making me want to this holiday season 😭 can you give tips or tutorial for non dyson blow dryers?
I learned that achieve a blow out look with a straightening iron☺️ Also that my hair needs more moisture than protein and how important heat protection is if I decide to do a blow out 😍
Your hand is free! Yay! I'm just getting the hang of wrangling my curls and here you come with this. I think I would LOVE that Corrale but it's not in the budget. I really am thinking about the blow dryer, though.
Can you please review other brands’ hot tools? I know you have a brand deal but not all of us can afford Dyson tools and I’d love recommendations for other options!
One tip I’ve learned to keep hair from poofing up after straightening is to get as close to the scalp as possible with the straightener. If the scalp hair isn’t straightened it will just poof back up for me.
Very nice although I"ve seen someone else use that straightener to and it does tend to make the look frizzy at the end. Idk why I'm not really a fan of that straightener. It doesn't give off the finished result I would personally like.
Can you do a video on best heat protectant? Also is that oil enough to use for blow dryers and hot ironing or no? really wish I could afford that dryer and straightener lol
I’m Dominican so our salons are the queens of blow outs… to keep it straighter go to bed w a doobie! (Or tubi in Spanish) so you won’t have to retouch as much. I can follow my regular wash routine while keeping it straight.
Dominicans used to do my blow outs in the 90s and early aughts (I haven’t straightened my hair in years now) 😊 They would put my hair in the huge plastic rollers and make me sit under a dryer for like 45 mins. Then they would take the rollers out and blow dry my hair smooth with a round brush. My hair used to come out great and really smooth. However, that heat was hard to take sometimes lol. I even had some strands that stayed straight for years until they grew out 😊 They weren’t playing!
I used to go to them but like you said, “the heat!” I do my own version at home… I set my hair in rollers, sit under the dryer, then wrap my hair around my head (dubi) for about 15 min. Then I use a flat iron (a one pass per section). It’s silky and smooth and shiny! I’ve tried the blow drying after the roller set but just can’t get it as smooth, shiny and flowing like they can.
45 minutes???? Girl, you lucky. I usually had to stay for over an hour and I hated it! Not including the deep conditioning (which I would end up skipping cause it was additional time in the dryer) and getting my hair blow dried. I also used to go get Dominican Blowouts and I stopped mainly because of the heat. To be fair, I think my hair can tolerate high heat even without the deep conditioning. Doing my own hair now, whether it’s diffusing or straightening/silk pressing is much easier for me since I don’t have to go out of my way to go to the salon. My hair is also the healthiest now and tend to last when I do it myself, especially when it’s straightened. I think it also helps that I deep condition religiously lol. Dominican blowouts are great for the straight silkiness but it can be really damaging if you’re not careful with the heat
Today I decided to do a smooth blowout after 2 yrs of solely curly styling. I already purchased the Tymo Ionic Blow dryer Brush and Volumizer. I used Seen Volume Blowout Cream after my leave in. I was pleasantly surprised with my first attempt. My hair is fine and low density...completely opposite of Mell.
Please do a review of New Wash for curly hair! My salon carries this product but it seems like an overpriced co-wash to me... however, if it really does what it promises (improving hair health and saving time), I'd be willing to try it. You're the only curly influencer I'd trust for a no BS review!
Hey! I personally have been using new wash for almost 2 years and i love it! My husband loves it too, and i use it on my kiddo. Its so much better than any "cowash" or 2 in 1 one ive ever used. There is a transition period of your hair getting used to it. After a couple months you should be used to it and be able to go longer in between washes because it doesnt dry out the scalp! They have a quiz on their website to help you choose which formula to purchase as well as a spot to plug in your hair stylists salon/name to recieve a small discount on your first purcahse!
@@esthertjones - Yes!! Like I bought the Dyson and it takes me over 2 hours to straighten my hair. I got thick low porosity like a regular hair dryer doesn't do it at all, and I still had to flat iron and only lasted three days. I've been dying to see more RevAir reviews because honestly there's enough Dyson reviews in the internet.
What's good Mell!? Love your channel. Thought I'd share a boring little tip ... If you need to put on the demisters inside your car when driving, lower the sun visor almost all the way to the windshield, but not quite, regardless of weather and time of day. This will act to diffuse the airflow being generated by the demisters away from your curls and help to keep frizz at bay.
I hardly ever use heat on my hair. I use hair masks every time I wash it, and I take so much care of it. I just blow dried my hair for the first time in a month, and it’s so dry!!! I’m going to try a different leave in conditioner, because the current one makes my hair feel gross. Do you have any tips for keeping hair moisturized when you have styled it? I normally wear my curls, but I don’t want crispy hair when I blow dry it
Beautiful 🥰 Thank you for sharing! Tip: there's a "night maintenance" we do here in Puerto Rico for when we curlys blow out, too. Before bed, you WRAP your hair around your head using BIG bobby pins. For me to explain would be difficult. But we call it "EL DUBI-DUBI" (Could be in Google) doing this, leaves your hair silky smooth. When you wake up, you take off the bobbies and wrap it the OTHER way around for like 15 min. or so. We also do it AFTER we blow dry for a little while in each side before letting it down. IT WORKS 100% I SHIT YOU NOT!!!!! 😃
I do the same thing but instead of bobby pins I use teeny tiny baby hair clips/claws. Easy to clip on and take off. Leaves no marks and my hair stays straight. 😊
Thankyou for sharing this.. I tried this today and worked superb!!! you explained the technique very well.. the knuckles down..I always get confused with the wrist work!
I have absolutely nothing against center-parts, but I really miss seeing side-part hairstyles. Everyone acts like they're illegal nowadays for some reason, lol
Okay Mel… I loved this video buttt I am in college and the Dyson is out of my price range. I can spend up to $180 on a straightener. Which one would you reccomend that is similar but affordable? Thank you!!!
Hey Mel! I have fine low density hair - are their products you might recommend for protection (before blow drying & before flat-ironing). I find if I add too much product my hair gets weighed down (oils seem to just stay on top). Thanks!! Love your content! 🥰🤍
Mel! What do you think about the old Conair 1875 hairdryer? Ya know, the one with the plastic bristle brunch attached? My Mom and I have been using it since the 80’s. My friends and I call it the Conrad. I have the same hair as you, except you have more of it. I just section and blow out with the Conrad then throw in some ionic hot rollers that I barely leave in and then hair spray it and tease it. I should do a video for the peeps who can’t afford the dysons but I’m a huge fan and have learned a lot, plus you’re highly entertaining :)
Of course you can. She just showed us a faster way. It will take longer. You have to be VERY carefull with the heat. I like to blow dry with a big round brush (depending on your hair length) Blow-dryers always will bring an attachment that filters the air in a thick stream instead of the wide stream you get with the big round attachment.
I have both a Dyson hairdryer and a regular hairdryer (my travel dryer) and using it is not too different you just need to be careful with the heat of a regular dryer. You can find a universal comb attachment that will fit most dryers for cheap. If you can’t, using a paddle brush or regular brush also works well, just got to brush down and keep brushing down until you get your hair as straight as you possibly can. Like another user mentioned, I also use a round brush, specifically a big round brush since I have a lot of hair, and long hair. I use a round brush mainly because it dries my hair faster and my ends don’t fray out like it does with brushing down. If you happen to have the same issue, I suggest sectioning your hair into small sections and wrapping the small section all over the brush. The hair should Not overlap. Also detangle hair before wrapping it around the round brush. The brush should be at your scalp when the small section has been wrapped around the brush. Then slowly pull the brush down (with the blowdryer following your brush) and continue until dried. All I can also recommend is doing it on a day off and also have lots of patience. Hope this helps
I have the same hair as yours it's dry freezy and thick exactly the same and my concern is I have been avoiding heat that is straightening it for two months now but it's tiring for me to take care of them so Im thinking of straightening it again now my question is Is it okay to straighten or follow these steps that u r doing here everytime I wash hair hair using heat protection won't it damage my hair more?
3 months late but yes, it will be damaging to your hair. You can do everything necessary to protect your hair from the heat, but if you're straightening after every wash, you're definitely going to get heat damage over time. It won't happen immediately, thanks to the heat protection-- but it's going to happen. I would really recommend exploring ways to style your natural hair in a more efficient and time-saving way! A few years ago, I would spend nearly an hour styling my hair. But nowadays, I'm able to style in 25-ish minutes, sometimes less. You just gotta explore different products and techniques :) I hope you find this comment helpful!! edit: I have thick, curly hair (slightly tighter curl than Mell, like 3b). forgot to mention that
I straightened my hair for almost 7 years and then stopped after seeing how much of my hair had broken off. I've realized that I've been getting infrequent trims which is why my hair never stood straight but constantly frizz.
I have the supersonic but my flat iron is a babybliss expensive nano titanium. Would I do the same technique ? Why not just use round brush w the supersonic ?
Hi! I really enjoy watching your videos, Mel! You're genuinely hilarious. Would it be sufficient for me to use Eva nyc's primer before I attempt this process?
I know I'm a little late but I've seen on amazon I'm sure there are others too. Stands you can put diffusers on? Like a holder so hands are free. I'd love to see how they work
Your passes with the flat iron weren’t perfectly smooth. Doesn’t that make a big difference in the finished look and in terms of heat damage? Or is that just an issue for cheap irons? Love ya girl and you look great!
Have you tried roller setting your hair then blow dry ? Would be cool to see that. I used to do that years ago cause my is crazy curly and it makes my hair shiny and smooth.
I have pin straight hair so every single blowout ever turns into "my natural hair but sleek™" (I do manage to get some bend at the end but it's generally on on single strand,I can never reproduce it on the rest of the hair and it falls off by the time I finish the blowout)
Happy texture Tuesday I've been growing out my undercut for about 2 months now, how long do you think it will take for it to catch up to the rest of my hair? The longest parts of my hair are mid length, part way down my back but not quite up to my elbows. Luckily I have fairly high density hair and I use it to cover the undercut.!
After not using heat on my hair for 2 years to get my natural curls back i want to blow out my hair but im scared im going to destroy my curls n ill have to start from scratch 🙃
Don’t worry! I didn’t apply heat for 3 years, got a big itch to blow out during the winter when i visited Colorado and so worth it. I felt gorgeous and my hair was barely damaged. Mel’s prep and post hair routines really helped keep my hair intact since I wear it curly 99% of the time.
You might just have a different texture/porosity that likes different things. Truly everyone’s hair is different and reacts so differently to each product. You might be using too little moisture or too little protein or the opposite. You kinda just have to experiment and try different things to see what works. Personally, I think doing the styling techniques is more important for me than the products I use. Especially the ribbon curl technique to get really good clumps. Using your other hand to keep tension on each section while you brush it is crucial and really helps to clump!
I would take a few pieces of shed hair and pull on them. (Best tested on the healthier strands of her.) I think if the strands stretch instead of breaking, you'll need protein. You could also try a bonder (like Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve or the Olaplex one). PS - Henna is also considered a protein treatment. Over time it may loosen your curl pattern, unless you add something like amla into the mixture.
Hey! I’m a new subscriber. My question, do you believe that you can attain healthy hair using box dye colors? Financially, it is better for me to do my own hair. Until I can buy higher prices dyes, I’ve used dark and lovely for the first time on my natural dark brown hair. I went jet black. Want your personal and professional view. Thanks love!!
Black and lovely is (in my opinion) not that good for hair dyes. I would recommend Revlon Colorsilk hair dyes because my grandma still has her curls even after years of dying her hair with it. Just that it’s thin because of age and negligence. The No ammonia options are better.
Can you please do a video or answer my question: on how to cover incoming silver hair? How to dye my med-light brown hair at home that was a dirty blonde as a child! I've never used permanent color just semi/semi color but silver is winning.. so sad
if you want to cover grey you'll need permanent colour and 10Volume developer if you're able to, going into a salon and getting some strategically placed highlights can help to camouflage the silver strands and incorporate them into dimension.
I think I'm the only person that just doesn't do cordless, Cordless anything. In my eyes their is nothing better and more reliable then a good old cord 😆.

A few years ago, I would spend nearly an hour styling my hair. But nowadays, I'm able to style in 25-ish minutes, sometimes less. You just gotta explore different products and techniques :) I hope you find this comment helpful!!
edit: I have thick, curly hair (slightly tighter curl than Mell, like 3b). forgot to mention that
U r STUNNING!
I love your hair :) I just can't get a Dyson :(
can you do a video on pros/cons maybe even a review on Steam flat irons?
I straightened my hair for almost 7 years and then stopped after seeing how much of my hair had broken off. I've realized that I've been getting infrequent trims which is why my hair never stood straight but constantly frizz.
You look beautiful ! ❤ I would love to one day get a Dyson, but unfortunately I can’t afford it😢
Please update this tutorial with the dyson airstraight 😊
I have the supersonic but my flat iron is a babybliss expensive nano titanium. Would I do the same technique ? Why not just use round brush w the supersonic ?
Yes, honestly I think that’s a better flat iron, I love her style but I don’t think it’s gonna last long.
Beautiful!
Hi! I really enjoy watching your videos, Mel! You're genuinely hilarious. Would it be sufficient for me to use Eva nyc's primer before I attempt this process?
I'd love for more disability friendly tutorials. I find myself not really able to even blow dry most wash days so I'd love some advice
I know I'm a little late but I've seen on amazon I'm sure there are others too. Stands you can put diffusers on? Like a holder so hands are free. I'd love to see how they work
Waittt hows your wrist/arm????
Your passes with the flat iron weren’t perfectly smooth. Doesn’t that make a big difference in the finished look and in terms of heat damage? Or is that just an issue for cheap irons? Love ya girl and you look great!
I think because she took bigger sections though it could be the flat iron since I’ve heard lots of people don’t think the Dyson flat iron is good
Could be because she was using her left hand, and she’s a righty, even tho the cast is off
Have you tried roller setting your hair then blow dry ? Would be cool to see that. I used to do that years ago cause my is crazy curly and it makes my hair shiny and smooth.
She made a video on that years ago
I have pin straight hair so every single blowout ever turns into "my natural hair but sleek™" (I do manage to get some bend at the end but it's generally on on single strand,I can never reproduce it on the rest of the hair and it falls off by the time I finish the blowout)
I feel you on this. Im naturally curly and mine never holds.
Can you use gel on wet hair for this method?
Happy texture Tuesday I've been growing out my undercut for about 2 months now, how long do you think it will take for it to catch up to the rest of my hair? The longest parts of my hair are mid length, part way down my back but not quite up to my elbows.
Luckily I have fairly high density hair and I use it to cover the undercut.!
Do you regret getting the undercut?
@@sunflowerbaby1853 Not at all, I'll probably get another one in the future. I just want to have all of my hair on my head again :).
@@_Lunitunez622 😊
Mel, help my hair is toooo soft.. Greatful my hair is healthy.. But having trouble styling.
I’m always surprised that your hair looks like Afro hair when you blow it out.
Did they send you the air wrap, too?
After not using heat on my hair for 2 years to get my natural curls back i want to blow out my hair but im scared im going to destroy my curls n ill have to start from scratch 🙃
Don’t worry! I didn’t apply heat for 3 years, got a big itch to blow out during the winter when i visited Colorado and so worth it. I felt gorgeous and my hair was barely damaged. Mel’s prep and post hair routines really helped keep my hair intact since I wear it curly 99% of the time.
Doesn't it damage curls? 😢
That's why she used heat protection before 😊
Question for you:
I am literally doing everything you tell me to for my hair, but it's coming out really stringy, it won't clump. What do I do?
You might just have a different texture/porosity that likes different things. Truly everyone’s hair is different and reacts so differently to each product. You might be using too little moisture or too little protein or the opposite. You kinda just have to experiment and try different things to see what works. Personally, I think doing the styling techniques is more important for me than the products I use. Especially the ribbon curl technique to get really good clumps. Using your other hand to keep tension on each section while you brush it is crucial and really helps to clump!
@@jasminelambert3753 thank you! I'll try some protein and moisture treatments, because I am doing the ribbon curls. I appreciate it so much!
This looks more like a 70s-80s blowout.
brrrr..”I’m not 💨, it’s the chair”. 😂
Vavoom!😍
Can you please do a video or answer my question: on how to cover incoming silver hair? How to dye my med-light brown hair at home that was a dirty blonde as a child! I've never used permanent color just semi/semi color but silver is winning.. so sad
if you want to cover grey you'll need permanent colour and 10Volume developer
if you're able to, going into a salon and getting some strategically placed highlights can help to camouflage the silver strands and incorporate them into dimension.
You look beautiful !.. but the curls fit your personality IMO
I think I'm the only person that just doesn't do cordless, Cordless anything. In my eyes their is nothing better and more reliable then a good old cord 😆.
