The voice actor for Maul is Sam Witwer. Before this, he was widely known for his work as the voice of Starkiller from the “Force Unleashed” video game series. He also previously voiced The Son, one of the powerful beings from the “Mortis Arc” of Clone Wars that you have seen months before.

If you really want to understand Mother Talzin’s motivation in this arc, After Season 5, read Darth Maul: The Son of Dathomir, It’s a 4-part comic based on a 4-ep unproduced arc from Clone Wars before it got cancelled by Disney. You can even do a reading stream of it.

The fan-made audio drama paired with the visuals from the official comic adaptation that you can find on TH-cam is an ideal way to slide it in during Season 7 (it's occurring simultaneous to Episodes 5-8 of Season 7). The voice actors do a pretty decent job and it's basically like watching a bonus 2 episodes since it is only 40 minutes long.
But, yeah, it helps wrap up a couple lingering plot threads that they weren't able to fit into Season 7 and sets up a couple threads for the series finale.

You wanted a reason Chris, I got you. George Lucas wanted to do so much more with the Prequels but he could only do so much with a trilogy, so 3 years later after Episode III, he wanted to expand upon the Clone Wars and he saw Animation as the avenue to do it and he himself poored his own money and ideas into some of the best arcs in the Clone Wars, of course he had some wacky ideas for episodes too, like The Zillo Beast 😂.

    • @EACru2002
      @EACru2002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Also another thing to consider is that Lucas is a huge fan of animation and doesn't view it as a "lesser" art form. So him telling these stories here in his mind wasn't him relegating it to a "lesser medium" or anything like that. In reality too, I think he honestly enjoyed working on the Clone Wars more than making any of the movies themselves. He could just be the ideas guy and have Filoni and his team execute them, see the works in progress, give his notes, etc. In a lot of ways, the Clone Wars is sorta what I think George Lucas always wanted to do. He always said he's an editor at heart, and the only reason he wrote and directed Star Wars was because no one was making the stories he wanted to edit. With Clone Wars, he could assume the role as ultimate editor/show runner and tell all the stories he always wanted to.

17:34, 19:24 "Son of Dathomir" actually was a 4-episode Clone Wars arc, one of 10 arcs (including "Dark Disciple", a Ventress arc) which all were sadly cancelled by Disney after them taking over Star Wars. That arc was turned into a comic and features more of Maul, Taluin, Dooku, Palpatine, Grievous and so many more. That arc also explains Mother Talzin’s motivation in this arc.

Maul totally has lines in Episode 1, though. They're not many, however, so you are definitely not alone in having forgotten them. He had a raging revenge-boner already then. ;)
Maul: *Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the homing trace is correct, I will find them quickly, Master.*
Sidious: *Move against the Jedi first. You will then have no difficulty in taking the Queen back to Naboo to sign the treaty.*
Maul: *At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have revenge.*
Sidious: *You have been well trained my young apprentice. They will be no match for you.*
I loved Maul back in Episode 1. He was the coolest villain ever to me as a kid, but like you said, that was visually and thematically. Clone Wars fleshes him out in such a fantastic way, though, that he's now unironically one of my top five favorite Star Wars characters of all time.

It doesn't work for Reva and the Grand Inquisitor in Kenobi because the performance and pacing doesn't sell it.

Maul did speak in The Phantom Menace. He had like two lines when speaking to Palpatine.

It was 1999. I was 10. And words cannot describe the amazement in the theater when that second saber appeared. Potentially unpopular top 3 movie moment for me personally just cuz I love Star Wars

One of the coolest details; pieces of the metal spider body are floating and shaking midair. So Maul is holding that thing together by sheer will of the Force. But if he's doing that, begs the question why he chose spider legs, to which the obvious answer given his decayed mental state, that's how he sees himself. A hideous monster

actually, there's one scene in phantom menace where darth maul spoke.
Darth Maul: "Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the trace was correct, I will find them quickly, Master."
Palpatine/Sidious: "Move against the Jedi first. You will then have no difficulty in taking the Queen to Naboo to sign the treaty."
Darth Maul: "At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have revenge."
Palpatine/Sidious: "You have been well trained, my young apprentice. They will be no match for you."
in the movie, while Ray Park does darth maul's fight style and his own stunts, darth maul's voice is dubbed by Peter Serafinowicz, the actor who played Saal from 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, lord edgar covington from Parks & Rec, and Blind Ivan from Gravity Falls.
in this series and so forth, darth maul is still voiced by Sam Witwer, who had played Starkiller (and his clone) from The Force Unleashed 1 & 2 and The Son from the Mortis trilogy episode story arc.

Maul is actually the perfect character to survive getting cut in half. His race the Zabrak have two hearts and are notoriously hard to kill with a ridiculous tolerance for pain. Little known fact night sisters and Dathomirians like Ventress are human-zabrak hybrid subspecies. It's why the women don't have horns.

Few things are more consistent in Star Wars than Obi-Wan being captured and abused.

Colin Trevorrow’s script for Episode IX Duel of Fates did work in some Clone Wars/EU stuff like one of the Knights of Ren having the Darksaber and Rey and Kylo’s final confrontation happening on Mortis, though it doesn’t look like it would have involved the Father, Daughter, and Son, it was just going to be a cool backdrop.
I don’t want to put the Duel of Fates up on a pedestal, like it would have fixed the whole Sequel Trilogy, that it wouldn’t have had its own problems, but it at least seemed like it was making an attempt at working in EU stuff, and most importantly actually doing some world building, something the other two movies in that trilogy were sorely lacking in.
Which makes one wonder what the "creative deferences" were that forced Trevorrow off the project and gave it back over to JJ.
And yes, I will acknowledge the unfortunate passing of Carrie Fisher as major contributor to Episode IX’s problems, and that was outside anyone’s hands, there’s no one to blame for that tragic happenstance.

A cool little comparison when Maul is "reborn" and immediately grabs Savage is that is the exact same thing that happened with Savage and Feral when he got his power up. The difference being when Savage got his upgrade he was completely entranced in the magic and killed Feral when told to do so. However, Maul after he grabs Savage, you see him calmly regain control and lets go of him.. They even have the same eye opening sequence.

Maul was a really cool character in the Phantom Menace, but it was his reintroduction here in Clone Wars and the rest of his story that made him my second favorite Star Wars character, right after Ahsoka.
An ability of the dark side is to survive what would otherwise be serious/fatal wounds by feeding off of pure hate and revenge. We've seen this with Maul, Reva, the Grand Inquisitor, and even Anakin/Vader on Mustafar.
Technically Maul had like two lines in the Phantom Menace, just fyi, but they were practically whispers and easy to forget.
Believe it or not, the best of Clone Wars is still yet to come.
