    Brilliant review and channel.
    I really like this new computer.
    I collect a lot of retro consoles and one of the things I look for when running emulation is scan lines when displayed on modern flat screen televisions..
    Can you please let me know if the computer can output them via its HDMI hardware or can the emulation software do it instead.
    This device is going to go supernova...
    Its a totally awesome way to use a computer without having to have hulking great pc cases with fans galore.
    For standard computing, Surfing and emulation this is a holy grail moment.
    Those skins you produced are utterly superb.
    Maybe they could be available in an adhesive like skin similar to the ones for the PS3 and Ps4 etc.
    In fact if they had released this device in a ZX spectrum style one and made it run thousands of speccy games it would have gone down a storm.
    Its like all Christmases rolled into one.
    Absolutely brilliant.
    Many thanks for the ace review :)))

      Thank you for your kind words. Means a lot! 👍🕹 Not sure about scanlines sorry.
      We've looked into skins and discussed with dbrand.com but determined it's just not feasible due to the tiny lines between each key, and the keys themselves. Best bet is RasPi releasing bespoke retro versions or cases 🤞 Drop them a message!

      Isn't scanline your refresh rate? Are you talking about black lines that run down screen or something else?

    • @zark212
      @zark212 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plageran Hi Plageran
      Good question.
      If memory serves me I think there is refresh rate and also scan rate.
      The black lines on the screen are the exact effect of the scanline generator.
      Running normally horizontal across the screen.
      The generator has different settings like intensity.
      It makes a huge difference to vintage as well as some modern games.
      There was a Guy on TH-cam who altered the refresh on a flat panel to better match the smoothness of the Cinema screens.
      I will try and find it :)

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure he said it was $100. Where did you get that it was only $70? EDIT - Ah nevermind, I see where it says that just the kit is $70, which honestly seems kind of expensive considering a 4GB Pi 4 costs around $50 or so. Seems it would be a much better value to actually get the kit that comes with the Pi 4.

    • @alakani

      @@nonarKitten Lol I actually posted that before I realized that the $70 kit actually comes with the Pi 4 as well. I thought this kit just used the original boards and that you'd plug em into the keyboard internally, but it seems theres an all newly designed Pi 4 board inside!
      So yeah, the $70 is actually a GREAT value! That was my badd for not realizing. I didn't see the new board til he opened it up at the end. Once I realized this I immediately went and ordered me the $70 kit! :)

      I just built one of these a few months ago for a friend , your best bet is to go with that 512GB Samsung card because there is an image called 'RetroBliss(512GB)' made to fit on that card. It installs leaving plenty of space for / , I believe the final game count was in the 13,000's as far as how many titles you get. All with the supporting Artwork , banned versions, and China/Japan versions of some games. You even get some custom ROM's , for instance a version of Double Dragon and Streets of Rage with WWF wrestlers . The torrent takes half a day to download and several hours to write it but its totally worth having, this is the torrent link from Arcade Punks.com : punkwhore.com/arcadepunks/2020/tor/Retro-Bliss-Revolution.Pi.4.RE-LOADED.Playbox.v1.5-4.5.18.torrent . Just something to mention its built on PlayBox and not Emulationstation , also included in the build is a full desktop environment , to start it you need to drop into the shell and start lightdm otherwise it will just source your .profile and drop you into PlayBox on boot. Check out the Virtualman TH-cam channel , he builds the images.

    Definitely a neat little kit. Something I hope I can recommend to people in the future as a cheap computer solution for those who don't need a full desktop computer.
    However, I'm very curious about thermal performance, and I hope to see lots of thermal testing on this device. The original Raspberry Pi 4 runs very hot, even with a heatsink - a fan is required to get the best performance out of it. Using the metal shielding as a heatsink is clever, but I doubt it'll be sufficient to cool the Pi 400 enough.
    I also wish they'd scrapped the micro HDMI ports and instead gone back to full-sized HDMI. I don't see the need for two HDMI ports on the Pi 400 anyway, so I think one full-sized port would have been fine, especially since they were more than happy to cut out one of the USB 2.0 ports and the camera connector (the latter for obvious reasons).
    Finally, this is a bit of a nitpick but I'd have liked to have seen a cover for the GPIO pins, since I think they'll be used less on the Pi 400 than a regular Raspberry Pi, especially for those who want a cheap and light computer.
    Overall though, I really like it and I hope it does well. I might even get one myself if it performs well enough, though I hope they make a barebones kit available because I don't care for their tiny mice and already have the rest of the necessary accessories, so it'd be nice to save some money on the set if possible.

      @GareWorks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paspax Not for the average user who just wants a basic computer experience for browsing the web and checking their emails.
      That's my point - I feel like the target audience for this isn't exactly the regular Raspberry Pi audience, and it's certainly not a high-end gaming rig or anything like that, so I see two monitors as rather pointless.
      Plus, it only further taxes the GPU and generates more heat to have two screens connected on an already relatively weak device.

      Well, it's not like this EU thing is such a wild success, for Brexit not to make sense... Why OthersRemain (including Italy) is a much better question. For Germany sure, it makes sense, they have fulfilled their Nazi dreams of a Europe under their control... The rest of the EU countries don't get much...

    I've had a Retropie Odroid version for a while now and I'd say most games work on most systems. The integrated solution shown looks good once the compatibility issues are worked out for not a bad price either. The size of the motherboard looks nice and tidy too. Of course as soon as the pi400 was announced, I insufferably geeked out about how computers have come full circle and comparing it to the keyboard computers of the 80's and specifically the Commodore 64. So it's great to see you hitting on all those points and showing all those renderings! As for Retro Pie, its not surprising to see the config challenges. Retro Pie is amazing software but it's tremendously complicated. I think that's unavoidable considering all the different hardware it emulates.
    Loved this video! So many of my favorite things- keyboard computers, Raspberry pies, linux and Retro pie! Thanks for this video. Good job!
