We have monitors at the university and i would bring my raspberry pi 4, my keyboard and mouse to the library to work. It was really annoying to carry all these around every time. This Pi 400 solves my issue perfectly.
Same, there was a TV area in the library that was mostly unused (in place to watch DVDs), so I brought in a Pi and keyboard/mouse and turned those TVs into my own computer. That was so -long- much effort (and I ended up losing a keyboard!) and if the 400* was available then, I would have loved it (and probably not have bothered even getting a laptop, as there wouldn’t have been a need for one!) (* of course taking into account the 4th gen power! I already have a Pi 4 but I’m -tempted to buy- already bought a 400 now, which I'm loving...)

This is a super computer. I have it on my desk (w/ it's own monitor), next to my main machine. I'm using Synergy to control both computer with a single mouse and keyboard (the one from the main PC). However -- the Pi 400 is a great ARM development machine.
@@ChristopherGray00 its basically the same category of product for the modern day ... and guess what ? this thing can emulate C64 & Amiga very well not to mention that the C64 was many people's first computer that they used to learn peogramming, which is one of the core reasons why the raspberry pi even exists , and the pi 400 is perfect for that job
Worth bearing in mind that the unit by itself is quite a bit cheaper, and the bits that come in the kit may not be needed. The good thing about the 400 is that it's effectively the Pi 4, keyboard, case and cooling all in one, and hopefully the only things to source would be a micro HDMI adapter/cable and a microSD card (and should be easy to get!)
The only downside for me is that they took away the 3.5mm audio jack which ETA does not mention. It's great for kids just to plug some cheap speakers or headphones in there.
Most monitors that I've used come with a 3.5mm audio jack on the back of them, so I'm assuming they'd want people to directly connect to their monitor instead of the Pi 400. But I do agree that it would be more convenient if it was on the keyboard itself.
You can get a usb sound card that will have a 3.5mm audio jack for like 2 bucks online. It'd be nice if the 400 had the 3.5mm jack, but it's easy enough to use a usb adapter.

It is also beautifully styled and it does everything you need withot turning on my 550W PC (which I shall use only for gaming). For everything else, including emulating anything in the home computer history records, this is more than enough. And it's cute.

It would be so cool to make it completely wireless by adding an internal battery to it and by using the HDMI wireless transmitter that you showed off a couple of weeks ago
I think the layout of the board is great for heat distribution. That's why they can overclocked it without an extra fan. I am sure there will be third parties willing to make a cooling fan dock and eventually Pi will introduce versions of other color as well.
Quite a lot of wasted space on the Custom/Revision'ed Board, which could easily fit in full-size HDMI and even PCI-e slot and eMMC slot. With the amount of space they have on this Board, they could even make a 16GB RAM variant as well without much issue (though i guess it would up the cost and power draw).
Wouldn’t the PCIE slot take the connection that is used by the Ethernet? Not sure about eMMC, that might use the same bus as SD. Full size hdmi would have been glorious, though.
@@johnsherby9130: oops, yeah, you’re right-it’s the USB 3, not gigabit Ethernet, my bad. The CM4 doesn’t have USB 3, and previous hacks to put PCIE on normal Pi 4’s involved replacing the USB 3 ports (and I previously mixed that up with Ethernet which is how I got it confused before).
Nice video - seems like a nice piece of kit. Could be an ideal replacement for older 32-bit netbooks that are no longer going to be supported by Linux Ubuntu (Canonical) after April 2023. Something to look forward to in the coming months - maybe an 8gb might appear next year.....

Except it struggles with 1080p playback making it awful for media? When a TV box could be purchased or chromecast to do a better job for the same or less price
If Samsung ever released a dex box with all the ports like this, it could have been good for all basic internet browsing tasks for a lot of people while still being cheap.
Kinda glad I waited on my purchase of a Raspberry Pi 4. I would've been happy with it, but this throwback to the Amiga A1200 and the C64 with the decent//good cooling plus the built-in power "button" really adds an extra layer of coolness for me. I think they knocked it out of the park. This is effectively a 1-purchase solution which makes it much more accessible to everyone... not that the RP4 isn't accessible, but this one is more so.
It'd be cool to see a "pro" version with an m.2 PCIe slot, up to 8GB possibly 16GB RAM along with the ability to plug in the Raspberry Pi High Quality camera module, or go with a design that utilizes the CM4 module with the aforementioned ports.
can you test the emulation of PS1 (or even PS2) on this? Also, would be nice to see how it behaves running different operating systems (like the new Ubuntu).
Nice to see something like this getting made. I might consider getting this for my little brother, now that he has been exposed to emulation and gaming on a PC for sometime.
Yes, I think that having a "personal computer" proposal should have removed the IO header to free up physical space and put conventional HDMI output + the audio jack for headphone
You should pair this with the hyper mirror and a bluetooth/wireless mouse for the ultimate couch surfing experience, maybe even power it from a battery or mod one into it
The first thing I thought seeing the Pi 400 was that it looks like the 8-bit personal computers of old. Now I have bought a Pi 400 for the express purpose of turning it into my Commodore 6400. The annoying thing about these is the idea for them was to help poor families afford a computer to use at home during lockdown, As soon as they were released tech heads went and bought them all so the kids couldn't get them.
No, it was for British kids, and meant to reignite what was going on in the late '70s and early '80s when Eben and co. were getting hooked on computers themselves. The "African kids" thing was the OLPC.
The announcement of this was a pleasant surprise. I know some found it puzzling, but I like this variant of the Pi. I was considering picking up their desktop kit in the past because I like the look of their keyboard and could use another one, but it never made sense for me to actually buy one. It seemed like a bad value since the included case was useless due to the thermal needs of the Pi 4. This is a different story and much more appealing to me. It's nice to finally see a Pi 4 board with proper cooling included. That's one of the things I've always liked about Hardkernel's Odroid boards. They've almost always had good thermal solutions. I may just get one of these.

I think there is a chip between the pi and the ribbon cable that has the controller for the keyboard itself, but you’re right that that chip uses one of the USB lines.
Wow, it's gone up a lot, the stripped down version in store in 2024 is $180 where I live
My British gamer friends who owned a Spectrum in the 80s must be at awe
the form factor of the pi 400 board would lend itself really well to a possible laptop config...
In the 80’s I had a Vic 20. I was jealous of some of my friends who had the Commodore 64. 😂😂
Hey hud. I want to thank you for making this. Making videos likd this is work. It takes time. I appericate what you do, sharing information and your way of doing it is clear and concise. I only clicked this because I've been thinking of making a raspberry pi or arduino [Not sure then differences between them i assumed it was brand, its been a while since i wanted to get one for not just games but a internal relay system type using these. 3:15 the closest thing we'll get to a face reveal.
I was hoping you had a robot head...
Lmao 😂
I think he's republican.
@@blanchehermine How did you deduce that? Solely from his goatee? lol
@@RamyWarda he's also from Alaska.
@@blanchehermine Why would that matter?
I love the beginning of the video the intro, showing ETA PRIME sitting down ina futuristic world somewhere in a apartment building playing old school emulated games. Awesome 😊
@@kristiansims the raspberry pi 4 compute module has PCI-e capabilities. I don’t know if there’s a trade off or not
And a P2 port hahah
@@johnsherby9130: oops, yeah, you’re right-it’s the USB 3, not gigabit Ethernet, my bad. The CM4 doesn’t have USB 3, and previous hacks to put PCIE on normal Pi 4’s involved replacing the USB 3 ports (and I previously mixed that up with Ethernet which is how I got it confused before).
MvC2 is probably the best example you could have given. Thanks! 😊
Absolutely love this thing. Now I know what I'm getting myself for christmas.
How’d it work out?
@@SlugSage they didn't have British keyboard in stock so I didn't get one yet
Looks like a very good Christmas gift for the kid 😜
It is, there is a very good little manual that's focused for kids on how to program graphics and use GPIO.
Nice video - seems like a nice piece of kit. Could be an ideal replacement for older 32-bit netbooks that are no longer going to be supported by Linux Ubuntu (Canonical) after April 2023. Something to look forward to in the coming months - maybe an 8gb might appear next year.....
Ty for the vid! Just ordered a Pi4 2gb ram model. Totally new to he Pi platform. Cant wait for it to get here and start tinkering. This 400 is awesome! If all goes well, I'm totally going to have to scoop one of these as well!
I am brand new to all of this and am super excited to get this started I know it cant run everything but I would like to know what to steer clear of that way i dont break my Pi
Nice! I installed the IoT stack on it and am using it as a hub for home automation. It is the only Pi 4 I found for under $100 in Dec 2021.
I'd like to know if it will betaflight configurator, it sounds like I will be needing a new system as of there next update... thanks for everything!
🥃cheers🍻
Pi 400 is perfect for an All-in-One media center!!
Except it struggles with 1080p playback making it awful for media? When a TV box could be purchased or chromecast to do a better job for the same or less price
I'm just waiting for something in the price range of a Pi able to run PS2 games at full speed. I imagine it's just a couple of generations of Pi away.
If Samsung ever released a dex box with all the ports like this, it could have been good for all basic internet browsing tasks for a lot of people while still being cheap.
I would run all the emulators that can run well on this thing. This may be what I get for my birthday. I've never had a Raspberry Pi
The best thing I liked about this Package is that Book...it's been so long since I've seen a beginners guide with a Computer Package
can you test the emulation of PS1 (or even PS2) on this?
Also, would be nice to see how it behaves running different operating systems (like the new Ubuntu).
Nice to see something like this getting made. I might consider getting this for my little brother, now that he has been exposed to emulation and gaming on a PC for sometime.
I didn't see a headphone/mic jack on the back there. I'd probably throw a usb sound card on that 2.0 port to get audio in/our that way.
Yes, I think that having a "personal computer" proposal should have removed the IO header to free up physical space and put conventional HDMI output + the audio jack for headphone
I just use speakers connected to my monitor as always (better sound than monitor speakers) then plug the HDMI cable into the monitor.
@@stephenelliott7071 I prefer using headphones, which I suppose you could do over Bluetooth, but the option not being there slightly bothers me.
@@DigitalJedi I can plug headphones into the headphone out port on one of the speakers (rather than the pi). Again a widely available feature.
@@stephenelliott7071 true. I forgot about that.
You should pair this with the hyper mirror and a bluetooth/wireless mouse for the ultimate couch surfing experience, maybe even power it from a battery or mod one into it
Will they have a Pi “800” with 8gb of ram? That would be perfect for my use.
Same here
This is what I want too
yup
I don't think it would be called 800. 4 in 400 is most likely a reference on what Pi version it is based - Pi 4.
@@Dino3arw 400 PLUS it is then.
The first thing I thought seeing the Pi 400 was that it looks like the 8-bit personal computers of old. Now I have bought a Pi 400 for the express purpose of turning it into my Commodore 6400.
As a bonus, I have a keyring nerd tool that happens to have storage for two micro sd cards. I can take 3 boot disks with me when I take the Pi 400 somewhere.
I'm disappointed that there was not a 8 GB version available and that with the available space, why didn't they make it with 2 full size HDMI ports?
chk Nvidia's jetson
@@kipa_chu but I'm not looking for a different brand. I know they're much more powerful better more advanced computers out there. the point of my post is my disappointment with the people that make the raspberry pi
Yeah full sized HDMI ports are much more robust. The mini-HDMI tend to break with regular use.
I saw many reviews of pi 400, but I didn't watched it, waiting for you to upload one.👍
I want one but I want the 8G version with a touch pad.
@Chris_Gullett Because they're different form factors or shapes.
@Chris_Gullett If you'd do that then you're crazy and obviously don't get the point of the Raspberry Pi or what they're trying to do.
@Chris_Gullett Never said that I'd prefer it. Lol I'd prefer the Raspberry Pi 4 but I don't have it yet so it is what it is. Lol And that's just a matter of opinion. If you don't like it or what they have to offer then don't buy it.
@Chris_Gullett No! I meant that you'd be crazy for wanting to spend $200 on this with the compute module inside of this.
This is so cool, reminded me of Commodore 64.
damn, mix this with Amibian, and make yourself a fully contained "Amiga clone"
Be been specifically hanging out waiting on your review 😃
Got one on preorder here in Australia, super excited.
bro is it working fine....whats ur review plz explain me😥
The annoying thing about these is the idea for them was to help poor families afford a computer to use at home during lockdown, As soon as they were released tech heads went and bought them all so the kids couldn't get them.
MONTY supply and demand, they will make more
The raspberry pi foundation isn't strapped for manufacturing power, I can't imagine poorer families waiting more than a week to have one shipped out.
That’s what they said about the first ever Pi. It was for the African kids
No, it was for British kids, and meant to reignite what was going on in the late '70s and early '80s when Eben and co. were getting hooked on computers themselves. The "African kids" thing was the OLPC.
bruh. They are expensive af in germany. 80€ or higher.
I'm buying one of these to use as a work pc. Going to mess around with box86 and wine to see what I can get working.
Kinda gives me apple II vibes since it’s build into the keyboard!
Extremely professional and to-the-point review.
This thing is good when you don't have a Computer.
So you can watch Videos and search the Web for a New Computer! Haha
well i mean apart from gaming and video editing, this thing is good to use as a dekstop computer
Can I use it to watch TH-cam videos in HD for 10 hours a day?
Well, for TH-cam you should buy Android TV box (40$), which will support 4k60fps on TH-cam.
Nothing I enjoy more on this channel than watching you tear things apart(sometimes with you bare hands haha).
I would love to see a video on how to install Android OS, Boot from SSD with shutdown option. Use it as Android TV for my regular TV. Can we use external GPU with Pi 400.
its real hard to get something like android to run on the raspberry pi the only way to sort of android to run is by installing lineage os that is based on android
Awesome review and teardown! Thanks for your work.
tbf would be interesting to see an office with like 10 of these for basic word processing and browsing then at night they could be turned int oa cluster to run calculations
Love the 3B and 4B pi boards for retro gaming just fantastic
You forgot to mention the missing audio jack
Does it give auto through USB?
Love your video bro, the way you test the device with emulation system its unique and awesome content that not so many youtuber did
I think I have a problem... I want this, but I already own 18 Raspberry Pi’s 😂
Awesome!
If you wanna sell anyone I will buy..
The Raspberry Pi 400 is the 2020 version of a Commodore 64. I can't wait to get my hands on one! Nice video.
I just wish they'd have included a TouchPad on the keyboard, then you wouldn't need a mouse.
Exactly. That's what I thought, too. It would free up that USB 2.0 port, too.
@@luigiprovencher If it had the TouchPad, 4 usb ports, and was black I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Without a trackpad I see little point in it but I can't speak for all. I'd also like a battery.
No touchbad. Built in trackball or nipple mouse.
I think they were thinking of a computer replacement and we wanted a retropie built into a keyboard.
In 1980 I bought my first computer a Sinclair ZX81 that I bought as a kit for $99.99 with a 400 mhz z80 microprocessor and 1k of RAM.
Wondering how this would do with Windows 10 on ARM with the 2.2 GHz OC. Would appreciate if you could test that too. It would make a perfect light desktop for my folks with very few cables and stuff if it works okay. Cheers.
no body has been able to install any windows on the raspberry yet maybe in the future some body will finger it out bot it can not be done at the moment
just get it for your parents and install a supported Linux disto on it
you can make it look the same as any normal windows
and the want know the difference
@@lesnelson3458 It's been done on a Pi 4. I wanted to see the performance on this chip + cooling solution, marginal as the changes may be. th-cam.com/video/n1AXJjpM0L8/w-d-xo.html
P.S.: My folks are older people who can't tinker with the command line and need apps they are familiar with. Handing them a skinned Linux is not the solution.
Has RPI given you stock options or anything? Cuz they should. In terms of anything Raspberry Pi related, I always go to ETA Prime.
Between 2.5 inch touch screens/to work-arounds for old software on new models, you have saved my butt more times than I can count.
Thank you, ETA Prime. You are doing God's work...
All it needs to be perfect is an internal SSD.
