Amiga & pi fan here I am on my third now currently a 4, I gave my 2 away to a family member, when I brought my 3, I have just started a download of the 30GB package it looks amazing.
Bit of a story here Dan. I got my first Pi, a Pi2 B+ a few years ago with the express purpose of Amiga emulation. Set it up, gave it a go and ... that poor thing was underpowered for smooth Amiga emulation. So, it got turned into a PiHole, and has been running faithfully in that capacity every since. But this Pi 400 is the thing I've been dreaming of. Your video pushed me over the edge, and I've got one on my xmas wish-list. Hopefully wifey-Claus thinks I've been a good boy this year.... Excellent stuff sir, as always.
You have an amazing collection of operating systems. It's great to see someone (Chris Titus is another) who uses the right OS for the job and explains that he has his personal preference but loves trying out and playing with all types of operating systems. Variety is so much better than some odd brand loyalty a.k.a fanboyism.
Any tips on using it? I found VirusZ app but not sure how to best use it. Seems like you have to select each drive individually and select all. Did one then tried to do System and seems to have froze on a file. Is there a way to tell it to just scan everything and clean?
@@RetroGameCoders I think I've figured it out. It does get stuck on the file AmiGameBoy.key though and I have to restart it. So need to skip that file.
The PI-400 is looking to be the go to platform for most emulators and also for a lot of users seeking to use less energy opting to use approx 20-25 watts rather than 150-200 watts with a desktop PC.
Saving money on your hydro bill is something I'm alway interested in. I use to use a computer all day. I would have 3 or more running sometimes. Now there barely used and these new SBC are taking over and I like the savings.
@@TBL_stevennelson But there is no excuse or need for saving letters when you type. It is "Now they're barely used ..." etc. Also, do not put in at the end of a sentence! It is a preposition.
Today I simply downloaded and compiled Amiberry using the RPi400 and 64-bit beta Raspberry OS. It works without any problem. To have a good emulation and smooth scrolls the best way is to define the resolution for Xrandr (1008x560@50Hz) so it is equal the emulated resolution and make a script which sets the desired resolution, calls the emulator and after that restores the native resolution of the monitor. No screen stuttering and distorted Amiga pixels anymore :)
although back in the day i was an Atari ST Owner, this looks like a good way to get into Amiga finally! Please can we have those links to the various different emulators & OS as mentioned ?
@Mark Vegan Hi mark nice to meet you even if only virtually!! Thanks for the info. After having read up on it i certainly think i may treat myself to a whdload system ( pi400 maybe ) or maybe a real Amiga? What did you get ?
If you want to simulate an Amiga, there are a few emulators: www.zophar.net/linux/atarist.html Always wanted to get an emulator for the Atari ST on the Amiga back in the day, but I don't think one was ever made. Had a MAC emulator, but it was pretty worthless since anything I could run on that worked on my Amiga natively anyhow.
Hi Dan I thoroughly understand I also love the Raspberry Pi and have vertualy purchased every version of it including the pi400. Also I am an Amiga fan since 1986 when I use to go past the Amiga shop everyday and watch the juggler demo in the window.
Awesome video thanks Dan!!!! First time I'll honestly say I'd happily buy a machine for a dedicated Amiga emulator. There's a handful of awesome games I'd love to play again; "Mechcombat", "Stuntcar Racer", "Hired Guns", "Captive", "Syndicate", "Gods", "Zool" and "Zool 2", plus a few (lot) more and with the Stick of Joy, that Raspberry Pi400 looks like the weapon of choice. Not sure I'll ever see my Vampire V4 I ordered about 18 months ago
And the first game shown is my favourite Turrican!! Had to cycle for an hour to buy my Amiga 600 and bringing back the very big box on the back of my bicycle ;) Now thinking of this or a normal 4 with 8 GB.
Thanks to my wife xmas20 was this saturday. The Pi400 is a crazy machine. The first day i was just digging in some different distros. Trying out, how the new toy performs. The whole weekend felt like christmas back in the days. YES YES YES
It is currently the closest thing to the original Amiga culture. This version is clearly a tribute to the amiga 500. Cheap, a powerful environment but not too much. A large community focused on the same hardware-software not too powerful but willing to optimize it and push it to the maximum to make it grow. It's damn satisfying and fun. It is easily accessible due to the low price.
These are 65 quid delivered from RS, total bargain, loads in stock, mines coming tomorrow, great video BTW, you've a great radio voice, always love your videos.
My first computer was an Amiga 600 (still have it) our family computer at the time was a 386 PC which had Norton Commander on it.... Obviously Midnight commander was designed to look exactly like that so I've just had a Nostalgiagasm..... Getting one of these!
About AmigaPI over Rasberry PI 400 you can fix the issue of the apt-get update and upgrade without another rasberry pi. On the first boot you just need to connect the PI 400 using RJ45 on your router. then find the IP address of the rasberry pi on your router and connect using SSH connection (Putty client) using login: pi and password pimiga and then write on command line: sudo apt-get update an sudo apt-get upgrade . After update reboot your rasberry pi 400 and your keyboard and mouse will work.
Another great vid Dan. As a kid who grew up with an A600 this really interests me. I have a RaspPi 3 set up for Amiga games but this format is much more appealing.
I was thinking about WHY 80s computers almost always came in a keyboard form factor. I remembered that the great majority of early computer users (1977-1984) didn't have a monitor. The computer shipped with the unit itself, power supply, and an RF modulator cable to plug it into your TV's antenna jack, and that was IT. Most people just sat there with their computer plugged into their tv, and maybe a couple games on a cartridge (if applicable), in their living room, and played around for a while. A couple weeks later, they probably went and spent $60 on a tape player, or (depending on the computer), plugged a tape player into the computer and started loading and storing programs on tape. If they had the money, and they (or their kids) were serious enough, they might have gone and spent upwards of $300 on a disk drive. Very few bothered with a mouse. I had a light pen on my Commodore 64, and maybe spent an hour or two with it, total. Computers were almost entirely a living room affair, and that's why you didn't see the standalone beige box until later. Lots of people are (understandably) saying, "Well, it's just a laptop without a screen, why not put in a screen?!" But it's not a laptop minus a screen. It's a computer plus a keyboard. For it to become a laptop, it would need a screen *and* a battery *and* a battery charging/management circuit *and* a pointing device *and* some kind of case design with a hinge. There's a lot more that goes into a laptop than just a keyboard, CPU, and screen.
As someone who purchased at least one version of every numbered Pi, this is still missing in my collection. Actually this Pi 400 seems to be nice for C64 folks also.
Nah not really. The problem is the keyboard for programming. An original C64 has more characters which are printed on the side of the keys. For playing C64 games it will do but the diehard C64 fan will want to program as well. We will stick with the original.
i miss the amiga still to this day windows and pc (as well as mac apple linux and all those others for that matter) suffer the same problems the amiga did not have in the first place
Not much of am Amiga gamer, but that 'Adams Family' game is Marioesque in quality. I also love Tetris Pro, which was a PD game on a magazine disk. Chaos Engine was smart too. The 400 Pi is a decent device. Way to go!
Nice video Dan. Yeah I was also pleasantly surprised with the keyboard quality, okay it’s not a high end gaming keyboard, buts it’s more than adequate. The device does feel special... yeah I know it sounds silly but it does hit all the nostalgia tick boxes with it’s form factor. Can’t wait for some of those distros to be updated for the pi400. Keep up the good work. Jase.
It's interesting that people use the Raspberry Pi predominantly as a desktop computer because that's not what it was originally designed to be. Originally it was designed to be a multi-usecase controller, like robotics, drones, CCTV, etc. Desktop is only one usecase of dozens.
I worked on Amigas for bunches of years....I still love what could be done with dpaint and lighwave...I wonder if there is a gpio interface for support of video overlay frame synching ?
Another great video Dan, mine will hopefully arriving as a birthday present in next couple of weeks and that is my plan for it, so thanks for the easy to follow guide!
I went out and bought the Rpi 4 4Gb, still have not used it. Same with the 400!! Living in Cambridge less than a mile from the Raspberry Pi shop is a real problem!! ;)
thanks for this, i got stuck with the keyboard and mouse not working issue and have heard that updating in a pi4 does and doesnt work... good to see it being done... pi4 arrives tomorrow for the update, then it will be going into a piboy dmg from experimentalpi when that finally arrives (you should check that out)... another cool project i just watched is for a PI KVM over IP project, can use even a pi zero w for it, just need a usb hdmi adapter
Great vid, big fan of the Amiga and have just picked a pi400. I did wonder if Pimiga would work on it, thanks for the upgrade instruction. I’m a very happy fan right now.
Great video Dan, really enjoyed it. Right before the Pi 400 came out I bought the Vilros all-in-one keyboard case for the Pi. Not great, wish I would have waited for this. Keep up the great videos!
I didn't have to use retropie. I just wrote Pimiga 2.0 directly to the SD card and it booted up with no problems. Well, I had to copy Kickstart on boot but, it worked. I also found a way to extract the WHD file and run it directly from WinUAE in Windows. Just in case you didn't have a Raspberry Pi 4. I had to use my linux laptop to access the main partition, but it worked.
Pimiga is great but it is worth pointing out that several files are infected with the "Happy New Year 96" virus, so be sure to use the included Amiga antivirus tools first on the image to scan and get rid of them. Start with the system files first because when first booted into Workbench it will be resident in memory and will infect other files that you open...
Unfortunately, Hyperion are sticking with the PPC version, despite the lack of suitable 'modern' hardware, the high costs of developing a niche OS for an even more niche architecture and a relative lack of PPC programmers. Their business model is somewhat bizarre.
I'm more of the anti-pi type but it was immediately obvious to me this may eventually out-sell the C64 down the road. "Can't beat 'em? Join 'em." So I have my Pi 400 as well as-of a week ago...
Hi! What can i say? Simply fantastic because in the nineties i owned both Amiga 500 for three years then Amiga 1200 which was a fantastic machine so when i have seen your video i felt so much nostalgia and all my memories about my happy years... About Raspberry Pi 400 i can say for sure it is in my next projects (as soon as i can buy it) because i consider it a great machine and certainly i also will use it also as A1200 emulation (even if i don't deny that i have the serious intention to find a real A1200 in order to buy it: i loved too much that machine... it belongs to a beautiful and happy decade of my life before i met the worst person in my life... sorry i am unable to go on writing! Too much sadness 😭😭)
You don't need 8GB ram to run Linux, 4GB is plenty sufficient unless your using video editing and intense photo manipulation. But your not going to be doing those tasks on a system with an ARM Processor anyways....
I tried emulating Amiga stuff on my upper mid range gaming PC, R5 3600 and 5700XT. I'm an American who only knows of the Amiga hardly. I got two games working lol. Just wanted to try Zool... Guess I'll try the Genesis/MD version lol.
@@superviewer You do realise that Risc OS runs NATIVELY on the Pi without emulation? Buying a MiSTer just to run Risc OS software is pretty silly when the Ras Pi is cheaper, faster and Risc OS is being actively developed for the more modern ARM chips in the Pi.
I have. 4 but 2 of them are raspberry pi 3, 1 is Zero/W and Now the 400. I can't do the upgrade to run the desktop setup in the video because I don't have a version 4. And I don't have the kick start files or whatever its called.
Great vid again Dan! Man I wish I had your knowledge on how to set one up. I'm more of a traditionalist I still like booting up my A500 to play games, trouble is all the games are deteriorated. But I'm starting to be more interested in Raspberry pi the more time goes by. Keep up the good work 👍
TheC64 feels way more authentic but this is cool, I have an SD card with Pimiga on it but since I am learning Python barely get any time on it!! But it's sat right here, wonderful little computer!

I bought a 3.1 Kickrom license for my A500 with a pre-flashed EPROM, but I don't think it's great that someone bought the rights to sell them today when the alternative would be perfectly acceptable abandonware downloads. They don't even have an easy way to buy more licenses online. You have to buy an OS or buy pre-flashed EPROMs from a vendor. I just want the license because I can flash my own. I bet you have pirated games on your Amiga. If you were around back when you probably pirated games then as well. If you didn't you were very out of the ordinary.
Amiga & pi fan here I am on my third now currently a 4, I gave my 2 away to a family member, when I brought my 3, I have just started a download of the 30GB package it looks amazing.
I like to use mine for Dreamcast 😀 Redream runs really well.
Its like christmas 1991 all over again whoop
Its better than that, once the wait is over you get to keep your new Amiga forever.
That is absolutely fantastic reminds me of my Amiga 1200. Definitely on my wish list.
Amazing! I’ve had my eye on this little machine but was waiting for someone to do a video like this (focussed on Amiga emulation). 🤘
Excellent stuff sir, as always.
did it ever do the job?
You have an amazing collection of operating systems.
It's great to see someone (Chris Titus is another) who uses the right OS for the job and explains that he has his personal preference but loves trying out and playing with all types of operating systems.
Variety is so much better than some odd brand loyalty a.k.a fanboyism.
REMEMBER to clean pimiga of viruses after install. There is a virus cleaning app pre-installed
Why? Does it ship with preinstalled virus?
@@xdmkii I guess they didn't want to go back and correct it after it was released, as far as I know it is not a destructive virus though
Any tips on using it? I found VirusZ app but not sure how to best use it. Seems like you have to select each drive individually and select all. Did one then tried to do System and seems to have froze on a file. Is there a way to tell it to just scan everything and clean?
@@digitalman2112 as far as I know, you are right how it works. The virus is not destructive from what I hear
@@RetroGameCoders I think I've figured it out. It does get stuck on the file AmiGameBoy.key though and I have to restart it. So need to skip that file.
It would have been nice to have a full-sized HDMI port on the back - it's not as if there isn't the room for it
And audio jack.
HDMI converters and USB to 3.5 adapters are very cheap, but yeah would be nice not have converters, or have untidy usb hubs hanging out of the back

Eben Upton looks like a near dead ringer for Jason Statham. One deals with Assembly, the other with Transporting. It's a perfect operation.
although back in the day i was an Atari ST Owner, this looks like a good way to get into Amiga finally!

@Mark Vegan Hi mark nice to meet you even if only virtually!! Thanks for the info. After having read up on it i certainly think i may treat myself to a whdload system ( pi400 maybe ) or maybe a real Amiga? What did you get ?
@@danwood_uk Hi Dan! Very kind & speedy reply! Thanks it is much appreciated
If you want to simulate an Amiga, there are a few emulators:
www.zophar.net/linux/atarist.html
Always wanted to get an emulator for the Atari ST on the Amiga back in the day, but I don't think one was ever made. Had a MAC emulator, but it was pretty worthless since anything I could run on that worked on my Amiga natively anyhow.
Next up.... RiscOS and see how well it can replace an Archimedes.
oh man my right wrist is still buggered from joystick games on the amiga, pads were such a step up in terms of health and safety
Hi Dan I thoroughly understand I also love the Raspberry Pi and have vertualy purchased every version of it including the pi400. Also I am an Amiga fan since 1986 when I use to go past the Amiga shop everyday and watch the juggler demo in the window.
Still using my model 3b, this is a good reason to upgrade for me :) I also have a 128gig sd card rammed with Amiga goodness :)
It's a bit of a beast....ideal for your oldschool emulation of 8/16 bit uk computing.
Can’t wait for AROS to be ported over to this. Then it’s the WHILE package. 😃
Good stuff, got my first Pi today. It’s going to be a happy rabbit hole ... Was an ST user back in the day but secretly coveted an Amiga ...
I've overclocked my Pi 400 to 2.2 GHz and it runs perfectly and still stays cool.
Got mine as a forthcoming christmas present off parents and cannot wait! Now im even more excited to turn it into an amiga pi!
Very nice, it's a lovely little machine!
I also have a raspberry pi addiction. And grew up in the C64 generation. The 400 is a dream come true.
These are 65 quid delivered from RS, total bargain, loads in stock, mines coming tomorrow, great video BTW, you've a great radio voice, always love your videos.
hahah i'm trying this right NOW, in the same moment of time :) just installed retropie on my rpi 400 :)
Just got my Raspberry Pi 400 after a trip to the Raspberry Pi shop in Cambridge. Pimiga will be installed on it later today :)
My first computer was an Amiga 600 (still have it) our family computer at the time was a 386 PC which had Norton Commander on it.... Obviously Midnight commander was designed to look exactly like that so I've just had a Nostalgiagasm..... Getting one of these!
It was not designed to look like it, it is a direct clone (port) made by Miguel de Icaza in 1994 for Posix.
Finally someone is making unique single machines again.
I'm addicted to your channel, this video in particular and the Raspberry Pi 400 (got one for this Xmas!)!
AMIGA is the best example of retro gaming in my opinion
love your AMIGA videos Dan!
even though i have a 3+ and a 4, this vid has sold me, buying one right now for work. Thanks as always Dan!
Another great vid Dan. As a kid who grew up with an A600 this really interests me. I have a RaspPi 3 set up for Amiga games but this format is much more appealing.
OMG! Thank You for this turorial! I’ll go right away and make my Raspberry an ultimate Amiga!
Lots of people are (understandably) saying, "Well, it's just a laptop without a screen, why not put in a screen?!"
But it's not a laptop minus a screen. It's a computer plus a keyboard. For it to become a laptop, it would need a screen *and* a battery *and* a battery charging/management circuit *and* a pointing device *and* some kind of case design with a hinge. There's a lot more that goes into a laptop than just a keyboard, CPU, and screen.
my mouth is watering at that workbench full of apps.
I loved the keyboard form factor computers. I owned both an Amiga 500 and 1200. Also an Atari 800 .
I wonder how many pi400’s are going to get opened at Xmas. Mine definitely is. Had to invest in a bigger tv so I can run retro pie to the max!
It almost feels like the Raspberry PI is the new Amiga-like computers. Can do so much with so little and people love them.
As soon as someone makes a nice neat RGB output expansion so I can plug it into a CRT I'll be sold on one.
Learn how to code and bitbang the GPIO.
Well, you've convinced me ... now I know what I want for Xmas.
Always love your "Hey friends" intro. Have you got yourself an M1 Mac yet/do you have plans to get one and do a review?
I do, this video was edited on it :) Final Cut runs very nicely on the M1 Mini.
Hi Dan, I wonder about the nice clock seen in the background of you desktop. Is it a commercial available part or is it homemade one?
I also was very interested in that watch after watching that nice video :`D
would you believe it took me ten minutes to realise i recognised your voice from my favourite podcasts - The Retro Hour (Retro Gaming Podcast)
I hope some local stores and stuff pick up the Pi at some point. It could be a brilliant first Computer for someone potentially.
Great vid, big fan of the Amiga and have just picked a pi400. I did wonder if Pimiga would work on it, thanks for the upgrade instruction. I’m a very happy fan right now.
Pimiga would be 😎
Great video Dan, really enjoyed it. Right before the Pi 400 came out I bought the Vilros all-in-one keyboard case for the Pi. Not great, wish I would have waited for this. Keep up the great videos!
Fantastic installment Dan. I love the pi 400 and I love Amiga so it's a winner winner for me mate 🤗🤗
Fantastic. Just got one of these and looking forward to giving this a go
I really must get a Pi-400. I need something to keep me busy until my Spectrum Next arrives! :D
'Spectrum Next'? - oh, wow, that's a thing! Thanks for the heads up!
How is the sound?
Does it replicates those Amiga beats properly?
Pimiga is great but it is worth pointing out that several files are infected with the "Happy New Year 96" virus, so be sure to use the included Amiga antivirus tools first on the image to scan and get rid of them. Start with the system files first because when first booted into Workbench it will be resident in memory and will infect other files that you open...
Now all we need is Amiga OS running on ARM, with a rosetta style layer for 68k CPU support.
Unfortunately, Hyperion are sticking with the PPC version, despite the lack of suitable 'modern' hardware, the high costs of developing a niche OS for an even more niche architecture and a relative lack of PPC programmers. Their business model is somewhat bizarre.
Great post Dan, Im sure I will be coming back for the various bits of guidance installing soon once the device arrives.
The only thing odd about this fabulous machine is it was not based on the 8GB version.
You don't need 8GB ram to run Linux, 4GB is plenty sufficient unless your using video editing and intense photo manipulation. But your not going to be doing those tasks on a system with an ARM Processor anyways....
@@AlexiaVon I get that. There is an 8GB standard Pi though so just seemed odd to base this new premium one on the lower end Pi.
I tried emulating Amiga stuff on my upper mid range gaming PC, R5 3600 and 5700XT. I'm an American who only knows of the Amiga hardly. I got two games working lol. Just wanted to try Zool...
Guess I'll try the Genesis/MD version lol.
Nice one Dan, I think that's my Christmas prezzie sorted 😁
I wish they'd do an Archimedes.
Given the Archimedes was arm based, I wonder if some of it could run natively?
I recommend the 'MiSTer FPGA' device. It has an Archimedes core. Check it our :)
I love them too. Last time I checked I had 5 Raspberry Pis
I have. 4 but 2 of them are raspberry pi 3, 1 is Zero/W and Now the 400.
I can't do the upgrade to run the desktop setup in the video because I don't have a version 4. And I don't have the kick start files or whatever its called.

I have 2 x 1B and a 1B+
I have 2 x 2B
I have a 4 4GB

Really ought to get a 3 sometime. 🤣
Great vid again Dan! Man I wish I had your knowledge on how to set one up. I'm more of a traditionalist I still like booting up my A500 to play games, trouble is all the games are deteriorated. But I'm starting to be more interested in Raspberry pi the more time goes by.
