Just to clarify, the £93.90 price is for the Raspberry Pi KIT with mouse, keyboard, SD Card and leads. You can also get it as a standalone unit for £66.90.
You also get a book with it. It comes with the super cute Raspnerry Pi mouse, matching 3amp USB C power supply, the HDMI cable and SD card with Raspberry Pi OS! You can add a nice big USB 3 SSD or hard drive and use the Raspberry Pi imager on the Pi itself to install software to it, no PC needed 😀
For a proper '80 feel, it is required that the keyboard feels a bit on the cheap side. Not necessarily Z80, Z81, or ZX Spectrum level of cheap, but it has to be a bit further away from the IBM Model M.
I beg your pardon, but I disagree with you, The Amiga 1000 was the cats meow, I had 4 disk drives and 4 hard drives with a hard drive controller, what happened to it, was well we moved and I forgot I put the Amiga 1000 in a tower case and told the wife to go ahead and throw away all my old computers, I had about 17 of them, well she did, gone was my C64, C128, Amiga 1000 (in a tower case), with all disk drives and hard drives. That is what happens when you are moving to a new state.
When I set up my retropie. I used a usb drive with a few folders set up in win 10 (instructions are on the official retropie website). You then insert the drive into the pi and it creates all the rom folders. You then transfer your roms into the relevant folders and reinsert it into the pi. It will autoput all your roms in the right place. Bit easier than messing around with the command line.
Bit of a story here Dan. I got my first Pi, a Pi2 B+ a few years ago with the express purpose of Amiga emulation. Set it up, gave it a go and ... that poor thing was underpowered for smooth Amiga emulation. So, it got turned into a PiHole, and has been running faithfully in that capacity every since. But this Pi 400 is the thing I've been dreaming of. Your video pushed me over the edge, and I've got one on my xmas wish-list. Hopefully wifey-Claus thinks I've been a good boy this year.... Excellent stuff sir, as always.
If you don't have an extra Pi 4, all you need to do is edit cmdline.txt or rc.local after burning the image and add the update & upgrade commands to the boot sequence, then remove it after the first boot on the Pi 400 itself.
My 400 has been an Amiga since the day I got it. The issues with KB and M compatibility were fixed within days of this video coming out. It plays everything up to and including 68060 software with ease, even emulating it with the benefits of the best FP co-processor
I have owned almost every Amiga model under the sun, and wouldn't be caught dead giving Cloanto a penny for work done in the 80's and early 90's by Commodore. If he/they eventually take over the development responsibility for the successors of AmigaOS 3.1.4 from Hyperion and actively carry that project forward, then of course I would fund such development and exclusively purchase those Roms.
@@uberdude2555 We get it, you want stuff for free, because historically, you once owned Amigas, and therefore you feel entitled to the Kickstart Roms. Despite the fact that you sold them or gave them away, you still have the right to do what you want? I was so impressed with this tutorial that I ordered an Rpi 400 from OKdo 3 days ago, turned up this morning. Couldn't find any microSD cards spare so I thought I'd take a crack at using the official Rpi Imager to flash RetroPie to a USB flash drive instead. That worked. Thought I'd try and boot from it without doing a firmware update, figuring as the official docs said you need something after August 2020 and it's about 3 weeks old. That also worked. I haven't had a chance to put ROMs and things on yet but my trusty wired Xbox 360 controller was as plug and play as Dan's tutorial led me to believe, so I'm impressed that the whole thing works substituting a microSD for a USB device straight out of the box. Good work all round really! Just thought this might help people wondering about picking one up, and I'd say between this and LibreELEC soon to be updated for a good Kodi build (and potentially an easy way to dual boot with the USB and microSD as viable boot devices) you've got a stunning little multimedia device for, in my case, a shade over £65 with free delivery as I already had all the other gubbins lying around for power, a mouse etc. P.S. although you can enter the WiFi SSID etc with the gamepad... just don't. With the kind of default case-changing alphanumeric gibberish ISPs set by default it's not fun. 😂

@Mark Vegan Hi mark nice to meet you even if only virtually!! Thanks for the info. After having read up on it i certainly think i may treat myself to a whdload system ( pi400 maybe ) or maybe a real Amiga? What did you get ?
If you want to simulate an Amiga, there are a few emulators: www.zophar.net/linux/atarist.html Always wanted to get an emulator for the Atari ST on the Amiga back in the day, but I don't think one was ever made. Had a MAC emulator, but it was pretty worthless since anything I could run on that worked on my Amiga natively anyhow.
Hi Dan I thoroughly understand I also love the Raspberry Pi and have vertualy purchased every version of it including the pi400. Also I am an Amiga fan since 1986 when I use to go past the Amiga shop everyday and watch the juggler demo in the window.
These are 65 quid delivered from RS, total bargain, loads in stock, mines coming tomorrow, great video BTW, you've a great radio voice, always love your videos.
Awesome video thanks Dan!!!! First time I'll honestly say I'd happily buy a machine for a dedicated Amiga emulator. There's a handful of awesome games I'd love to play again; "Mechcombat", "Stuntcar Racer", "Hired Guns", "Captive", "Syndicate", "Gods", "Zool" and "Zool 2", plus a few (lot) more and with the Stick of Joy, that Raspberry Pi400 looks like the weapon of choice. Not sure I'll ever see my Vampire V4 I ordered about 18 months ago
Another great vid Dan. As a kid who grew up with an A600 this really interests me. I have a RaspPi 3 set up for Amiga games but this format is much more appealing.
The PI-400 is looking to be the go to platform for most emulators and also for a lot of users seeking to use less energy opting to use approx 20-25 watts rather than 150-200 watts with a desktop PC.
Saving money on your hydro bill is something I'm alway interested in. I use to use a computer all day. I would have 3 or more running sometimes. Now there barely used and these new SBC are taking over and I like the savings.
@@TBL_stevennelson But there is no excuse or need for saving letters when you type. It is "Now they're barely used ..." etc. Also, do not put in at the end of a sentence! It is a preposition.
Another great video Dan, mine will hopefully arriving as a birthday present in next couple of weeks and that is my plan for it, so thanks for the easy to follow guide!
Today I simply downloaded and compiled Amiberry using the RPi400 and 64-bit beta Raspberry OS. It works without any problem. To have a good emulation and smooth scrolls the best way is to define the resolution for Xrandr (1008x560@50Hz) so it is equal the emulated resolution and make a script which sets the desired resolution, calls the emulator and after that restores the native resolution of the monitor. No screen stuttering and distorted Amiga pixels anymore :)
Great video Dan, really enjoyed it. Right before the Pi 400 came out I bought the Vilros all-in-one keyboard case for the Pi. Not great, wish I would have waited for this. Keep up the great videos!
Amiga & pi fan here I am on my third now currently a 4, I gave my 2 away to a family member, when I brought my 3, I have just started a download of the 30GB package it looks amazing.
About AmigaPI over Rasberry PI 400 you can fix the issue of the apt-get update and upgrade without another rasberry pi. On the first boot you just need to connect the PI 400 using RJ45 on your router. then find the IP address of the rasberry pi on your router and connect using SSH connection (Putty client) using login: pi and password pimiga and then write on command line: sudo apt-get update an sudo apt-get upgrade . After update reboot your rasberry pi 400 and your keyboard and mouse will work.
Nice video Dan. Yeah I was also pleasantly surprised with the keyboard quality, okay it’s not a high end gaming keyboard, buts it’s more than adequate. The device does feel special... yeah I know it sounds silly but it does hit all the nostalgia tick boxes with it’s form factor. Can’t wait for some of those distros to be updated for the pi400. Keep up the good work. Jase.
I worked on Amigas for bunches of years....I still love what could be done with dpaint and lighwave...I wonder if there is a gpio interface for support of video overlay frame synching ?
thanks for this, i got stuck with the keyboard and mouse not working issue and have heard that updating in a pi4 does and doesnt work... good to see it being done... pi4 arrives tomorrow for the update, then it will be going into a piboy dmg from experimentalpi when that finally arrives (you should check that out)... another cool project i just watched is for a PI KVM over IP project, can use even a pi zero w for it, just need a usb hdmi adapter
And the first game shown is my favourite Turrican!! Had to cycle for an hour to buy my Amiga 600 and bringing back the very big box on the back of my bicycle ;) Now thinking of this or a normal 4 with 8 GB.
I didn't have to use retropie. I just wrote Pimiga 2.0 directly to the SD card and it booted up with no problems. Well, I had to copy Kickstart on boot but, it worked. I also found a way to extract the WHD file and run it directly from WinUAE in Windows. Just in case you didn't have a Raspberry Pi 4. I had to use my linux laptop to access the main partition, but it worked.
Great vid, big fan of the Amiga and have just picked a pi400. I did wonder if Pimiga would work on it, thanks for the upgrade instruction. I’m a very happy fan right now.
Thanks to my wife xmas20 was this saturday. The Pi400 is a crazy machine. The first day i was just digging in some different distros. Trying out, how the new toy performs. The whole weekend felt like christmas back in the days. YES YES YES
8:58 no its high resolution same size font so everything is smalller and crappy low res. not like high res bigger font(keep it relative same size) but font has more pixels render it nice . no devs make same 8 pixel text what ever 320x240 or 8k
I tried emulating Amiga stuff on my upper mid range gaming PC, R5 3600 and 5700XT. I'm an American who only knows of the Amiga hardly. I got two games working lol. Just wanted to try Zool... Guess I'll try the Genesis/MD version lol.
Nice guide mate! Sorry if this has been mentioned before and correct me if I'm wrong but it should be possible to SSH into the Pi 400 via ethernet and your computer's terminal, to apt-get update, without needing to put the SD in a Pi 4. Also, any idea if Workbench works, with mouse support? I haven't yet attempted that. For some reason that feels like a nice idea to see it running with the Pi 400 form factor. A proper retro desktop computer, with a desktop interface!
Thanks! Yeah I have thought that myself since, but not sure to enable/config SSH on the Pi 400 without the keyboard working? (don't think it's on by default and kb and mouse only work after the update). Workbench works with the mouse after it's been updated.
@@DanWoodisme Hmm, in my vid I had to do an apt-get update and SSH was on already I think. Maybe it was turned on for the build I installed but not by default. I guess it's worth a try... Great to hear that Workbench works too!
Ya, I don't know what a kick start ROM is or whatever. I looked for the link to buy and download it but there wasn't any. I also don't own any games or ROMs for Amiga. I do have 100s of Atari games On disk but I have No idea how to get them off.
Pimiga is great but it is worth pointing out that several files are infected with the "Happy New Year 96" virus, so be sure to use the included Amiga antivirus tools first on the image to scan and get rid of them. Start with the system files first because when first booted into Workbench it will be resident in memory and will infect other files that you open...
Video a year old now... Any update on ambion working on the pi 400 without a pi4 required.... Loved amiga as a kid and might add this to my Xmas list from wife
My first computer was an Amiga 600 (still have it) our family computer at the time was a 386 PC which had Norton Commander on it.... Obviously Midnight commander was designed to look exactly like that so I've just had a Nostalgiagasm..... Getting one of these!
I thought as soon as I first saw the pi400 that it would make a good 8nit and 16bit home computer emulation platform for things like the amiga (I have 2 1200s, but they require much more space than a pi400), ST (again I have a 1024ste upgraded to a 4096ste), msx (wish I still had mine! ), spectrum and others. Combined with a pi4 for console games (though you could equally use the pi400 which is better in terms of cpu clocks and especially cooling). I expect I'll eventually pick one up. Though I still want to get the 1200 and 1024sre set up and working at some point.
I went out and bought the Rpi 4 4Gb, still have not used it. Same with the 400!! Living in Cambridge less than a mile from the Raspberry Pi shop is a real problem!! ;)
Thanks Dan. I spent too much time on trying to figure out how to do WHDLoad instead of just dropping the LHA files in the roms dir.. I was gonna go the ADF route here.. sigh. I already have an Amiga 600 case+keyrah+pi(miga) set up and working, but I'm definitely going to get a Pi400 myself as well. I love the setup of your desk. Similar to mine, with Vector on the left and an xbox on the right :)
It is currently the closest thing to the original Amiga culture. This version is clearly a tribute to the amiga 500. Cheap, a powerful environment but not too much. A large community focused on the same hardware-software not too powerful but willing to optimize it and push it to the maximum to make it grow. It's damn satisfying and fun. It is easily accessible due to the low price.

www.zophar.net/linux/atarist.html
Always wanted to get an emulator for the Atari ST on the Amiga back in the day, but I don't think one was ever made.
I never could afford an Amiga back in the day, but my old C64 remains to this day the most beloved computer I ever owned.
I sold my C64 incl. peripherals to afford an Amiga 500 :D
Good stuff, got my first Pi today. It’s going to be a happy rabbit hole ... Was an ST user back in the day but secretly coveted an Amiga ...
Got mine as a forthcoming christmas present off parents and cannot wait! Now im even more excited to turn it into an amiga pi!
Very nice, it's a lovely little machine!
AMIGA is the best example of retro gaming in my opinion
love your AMIGA videos Dan!
Finally someone is making unique single machines again.
OMG! Thank You for this turorial! I’ll go right away and make my Raspberry an ultimate Amiga!
Amiga & pi fan here I am on my third now currently a 4, I gave my 2 away to a family member, when I brought my 3, I have just started a download of the 30GB package it looks amazing.
oh man my right wrist is still buggered from joystick games on the amiga, pads were such a step up in terms of health and safety
Its like christmas 1991 all over again whoop
Its better than that, once the wait is over you get to keep your new Amiga forever.
I like to use mine for Dreamcast 😀 Redream runs really well.
Eben Upton looks like a near dead ringer for Jason Statham. One deals with Assembly, the other with Transporting. It's a perfect operation.
Always good to see a video from you Dan
Fantastic installment Dan. I love the pi 400 and I love Amiga so it's a winner winner for me mate 🤗🤗
Nice one Dan, I think that's my Christmas prezzie sorted 😁
Loved this video, Dan! Really tempting me to get onboard the pi400!
Still using my model 3b, this is a good reason to upgrade for me :) I also have a 128gig sd card rammed with Amiga goodness :)
thanks for this, i got stuck with the keyboard and mouse not working issue and have heard that updating in a pi4 does and doesnt work... good to see it being done... pi4 arrives tomorrow for the update, then it will be going into a piboy dmg from experimentalpi when that finally arrives (you should check that out)... another cool project i just watched is for a PI KVM over IP project, can use even a pi zero w for it, just need a usb hdmi adapter
even though i have a 3+ and a 4, this vid has sold me, buying one right now for work. Thanks as always Dan!
And the first game shown is my favourite Turrican!! Had to cycle for an hour to buy my Amiga 600 and bringing back the very big box on the back of my bicycle ;) Now thinking of this or a normal 4 with 8 GB.
would you believe it took me ten minutes to realise i recognised your voice from my favourite podcasts - The Retro Hour (Retro Gaming Podcast)
I also have a raspberry pi addiction. And grew up in the C64 generation. The 400 is a dream come true.
hahah i'm trying this right NOW, in the same moment of time :) just installed retropie on my rpi 400 :)
Well, you've convinced me ... now I know what I want for Xmas.
I wonder how many pi400’s are going to get opened at Xmas. Mine definitely is. Had to invest in a bigger tv so I can run retro pie to the max!
Just got my Raspberry Pi 400 after a trip to the Raspberry Pi shop in Cambridge. Pimiga will be installed on it later today :)
Great post Dan, Im sure I will be coming back for the various bits of guidance installing soon once the device arrives.
Another great video!
Thanks for the information.
Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!
Great vid, big fan of the Amiga and have just picked a pi400. I did wonder if Pimiga would work on it, thanks for the upgrade instruction. I’m a very happy fan right now.
Pimiga would be 😎
Thanks to my wife xmas20 was this saturday. The Pi400 is a crazy machine. The first day i was just digging in some different distros. Trying out, how the new toy performs. The whole weekend felt like christmas back in the days. YES YES YES
Brilliant Dan...I`ve watched your youtube stuff for years now...Learned stuff too !
8:58 no its high resolution same size font so everything is smalller and crappy low res.
not like high res bigger font(keep it relative same size) but font has more pixels render it nice
. no devs make same 8 pixel text what ever 320x240 or 8k
Great video Dan. I'm so going to have to get one!
I've overclocked my Pi 400 to 2.2 GHz and it runs perfectly and still stays cool.
Thank you for this very well made video! I enjoyed it very much.
Always love your "Hey friends" intro. Have you got yourself an M1 Mac yet/do you have plans to get one and do a review?
I do, this video was edited on it :) Final Cut runs very nicely on the M1 Mini.
my mouth is watering at that workbench full of apps.
It almost feels like the Raspberry PI is the new Amiga-like computers. Can do so much with so little and people love them.
It would have been nice to have a full-sized HDMI port on the back - it's not as if there isn't the room for it
And audio jack.
HDMI converters and USB to 3.5 adapters are very cheap, but yeah would be nice not have converters, or have untidy usb hubs hanging out of the back
@@simretroracer7368 but do thet work on rpi os?
@@angeleocorrodead yes
It's a bit of a beast....ideal for your oldschool emulation of 8/16 bit uk computing.
I tried emulating Amiga stuff on my upper mid range gaming PC, R5 3600 and 5700XT. I'm an American who only knows of the Amiga hardly. I got two games working lol. Just wanted to try Zool...
Guess I'll try the Genesis/MD version lol.
Fantastic. Just got one of these and looking forward to giving this a go
Nice guide mate!
@@DanWoodisme Take Micro SD card and plug it into a PC/Mac - via an adapter if necessary. Then you can edit config files to your heart's content.
I'd been waiting for something like this :)
Awesome video, hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷
Can’t wait for AROS to be ported over to this. Then it’s the WHILE package. 😃
How is the sound?
Does it replicates those Amiga beats properly?
Great video Dan! I always steered clear of Atari/Amiga on retropi because of the slightly more complicated setup. Always love your vids!
It was not designed to look like it, it is a direct clone (port) made by Miguel de Icaza in 1994 for Posix.
Next up.... RiscOS and see how well it can replace an Archimedes.
Hi Dan, I wonder about the nice clock seen in the background of you desktop. Is it a commercial available part or is it homemade one?
I also was very interested in that watch after watching that nice video :`D
You should really do an apt-get dist-upgrade instead of upgrade, saw that you had some packages that where held back :)
Maybe, seemed to work anyway
@@danwood_uk probably doesn't matter, but could be good to know if something Linux related doesn't update
I loved the keyboard form factor computers. I owned both an Amiga 500 and 1200. Also an Atari 800 .
Nice vid Dan, looks awesome
Looking to get one myself... when they are in stock!
I went out and bought the Rpi 4 4Gb, still have not used it. Same with the 400!! Living in Cambridge less than a mile from the Raspberry Pi shop is a real problem!! ;)
Thanks Dan another great video 👍
Top video dan love the show keep up the fab work
Great video Dan 👍
