He couldnt handle the endless touring, drinking, drugs, etc. The tours were lengendarily rough - they just ground him down until he essentially had a mental breakdown. Sad story. But Artimus Pyle was a much better drummer anyways - heavier and gave stronger support to the guitars.
I was there! They were the best band at Knebworth that year! Head and shoulders above the rest. The Stones, were great, but these guys left me with an everlasting impression.
i was there as a 21 y/o ,now heading towards my 70th birthday. this was the 2nd time i had seen the stones , but the first time i had seen or even heard of LS - they were just brilliant on that day.
We all have to die. No one's immortal but their music lives on. Unfortunately 3 of them died way too soon. But we have TH-cam to go to when we miss them.
Their guitarists were all great. I truly believe Steve Gaines was destined to be the best. Songwriter, vocalist, lead guitarist, great slide player…. Would have been a stone cold legend.
Ed diffently help take them to another level, they were like a rocket, entering into roll and roll hevan, may they all R.I.P. They set the bar that very few bands reach and in my opnion, no group in my lifetime has surpassed.
@@chucky2569 yes i know about Gary , i dont know if you watch the documentary about the Skynyrd on Netflix , really good and Gary talk about the good old days

It’s so mind blowing that in less than 5 years and 5 albums that they produced so many classic rock and roll songs. One can only wonder “what if” if there wasn’t so much tragedy surrounding this band. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time!
without a don’t one best ever and i’ve seen ton of them.steve is on that list too of course bias my fav band of all time. these guys that is. dig ricky and all but doesn’t compare
And I just read a Rolling Stone magazine 'top 100 guitar players of all time' .... and not a single Skynyrd boy made it! WTF!! That removes all credibility from that magazine!!
I saw them in Memphis, Tennessee at the Liberty Bowl Stadium and brother I couldn't tell the difference between the album and the live show. They were that superb with their music. Great band.
An ARMY of lethal guitars! Story goes Ronnie was a work ethic dude, these guys practiced in steamy weather and he pushed the band, Billie Powell will never be topped, just an excellent combination all around! Don't forget how free Americans were back then too...
Crazy how close they sound like the album version. Those guys probably always sounded great. Didn’t matter if it was a festival or a small dance hall that held 50 people.
All musical geniuses and Ronnie...what a songwriter and story teller....wish I could have met all these guys. But as life has it, it just takes some people too damn early.
Omg never had I heard three lead guitar players jamming at the same time with perfect timing and making their guitars scream with pleasure the first time hearing freebird
So glad yall love my all time favorite band!!! This song was from their earlier days. If you notice there in the middle when the music gets happier that riff became the riff for gimme three steps. All their songs are hits to me. You'll never go wrong with any SKYNYRD song
Steve Gains, Allen and Gary could shred on those guitars and Billy on keyboards. I won't even go into Ronnie's voice. He was the band. Came up with the name and made those boys practice, practice, practice. The record company's said they were so pulled together in perfection at their auditions.
This is the epitomy of a band. Egos everywhere GOING THRU ...you guys ALL know the stories, amazing how they could get everything in check to perform 🎉
There will never ever be a band as great as Skynyrd hands down. I still listen to them to this day. RIP Ronnie, Gary, Allen, Leon and Billy. Miss you all.
I was there too. Lynyrd Skynyrd woke us all up and got us on our feet on a hot day where you could get stoned just breathing the air, and after some fairly unexciting sets from Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, The Don Harrison Band, and Hot Tuna. The Stones were great too. No-one "blew anyone off the stage". They are different bands with different styles and they each did what they do exceptionally well. The Stones did have a lot of sound issues though, with occasional excruciating feedback.
I was there too - they were by far the best band that day utter class - and also Captain Beefheart was ace - a great day and a shame the stones were poor
My 19 year old sister was watching her baby brother ( me) while my parents were on vacation in Spain from the United States for 3 weeks. I had just turned 12 years old. My sister's boyfriend wanted my sister to go and see some band outdoors in Georgia. So she had to take me along. I'll never forget that night. It was thousands of people standing up and raising hell. My sister's boyfriend decided to show me the finner things in life. Like pot and bootleg alcohol while my sister wasn't paying any attention. I also was shown how to pee in a gallon jug in public. This band became my favorite band that night. 1974.
WOW, there's songs U LUV , BUT AFTER AWHILE , they become ? not as thrilling/ unique as the 1st few times u heard it, THIS IS AN EXCEPTION !!!!!!! This is 1 of the BEST EVER !!!!,the guitars, drums , YIKES, OFF THE CHARTS AMAZING!!!!!!
I had that tape in my radio tape deck .that all I would listen to in my tractor trailer. All across America. God bless the lynyrd skynyrd family's. All that went to and worked for skynyrd were family always.
As documented, Mick made a comment about the boys and the "tongue". Ronnie made a point to take the entire band and walk down to the front. They smoked the Stones that day.
One of the greatest rock and Roll bands ever
When you have Jesus on drums and three legendary guitarists, the Stones really had no chance.
😂❤
Bob Burns was the original drummer he quit not sure why but he was a great drummer
He couldnt handle the endless touring, drinking, drugs, etc. The tours were lengendarily rough - they just ground him down until he essentially had a mental breakdown. Sad story. But Artimus Pyle was a much better drummer anyways - heavier and gave stronger support to the guitars.

Definitely the best Band on Earth.
It is sad that almost everyone in the classic lineup of Lynyrd Skynyrd has died. Especially Gary Rossington, he was a great guitarist.

All but Artimus…
This is HOW You BLOW The Stones OFF THE STAGE!!!!!!!!!!!
Arguably the greatest American rock and roll band of all time Rest in peace

This song is an Ed King contribution to Lynyrd Skynyrd! Ed wrote some great ones! Sweet Home, Working for MCA, Whiskey Rock-n-Roller, etc.
