Terry was amazing and if you saw them live that solo changed. He almost never tried to reproduce the studio version. You almost got the feeling he was making it up within the structure laid out in the song. Kind of like Zappa feels a live version should be.
Just think how blessed we were in 1970 to have Mr.Kath along with Hendrix, Allman, Clapton, Green, Beck, Page, Betts, Winters, Garcia, Santana, Kottke, Cooder, Harrison, Taylor,Taj, the list goes on. That will never happen again. That much talent in a single era.
Kath plays with a groove and rhythm completely his own. The rhythm is almost as impressive as the lead guitar. Different styles I know but Dimebag Darrell was that way too.
i am 63 years old and have listened to this song on the radio all my life. Today, because of you tube, I have , for the first time , seen the passion that this band put into that song. I always felt it, but now have seen it.

I remember 14 too when this song came out. I remember riding up to Kokomo IN with my neighbor buddies and “Jeff” was 16 and was allowed to borrow the family car so we could run up to the mall. I had to lie to my parents. Lol. This song came on. The windows were already down. The car went faster and the radio went full-blast. Yes!
How is it possible that Terry Kath isn't on the Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time? His omission makes the list worthless.
Yeah man. Allen Collins the guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd who wrote the freebird solo isn’t on there. It’s bullshit. The freebird solo is ranked number 3 according to them, but the guy who made/ played the solo isn’t even on their list for 100 greatest guitarists. It’s the same thing with Terry. Did so much great shit on guitar but is somehow still under appreciated. I don’t understand it
Because like another commenter said Rolling Stone sucks,and also because unfortunately most people associate Chicago with their later softer easy listening 80's hits, ('Hard To Say I'm Sorry' ,'You're The Inspiration' ,'Will You Still Love Me' etc) and not the hard rocking progressive/jazz rock band of their earlier years.

Terry Kath is EASILY one of the most underrated guitarists of ALL time. Simply put, the man was a BEAST. His solo in this performance is EPIC and one for the ages
3 or 4 days after this concert, Tanglewood had a mini Woodstock. I went and saw it's a beautiful day, Jethro Tull, and last up The Who. What a night I'll never forget it. 4 days after that, I was heading g to Vietnam. Today, July 19th, 2024, I wish I could have this concert again. Peace out everyone.

I was driving to work the following day at the ripe old age of 22 and I just picked up a cup of coffee. On the radio came the announcement of Terry's passing. I literally was in shock. I'm fortunate to have seen him 8 times. To me he was the best and I saw a lot of bands in the day.

I am 66 lol, was born in Chicago, but lived all over the country, and the world. I saw Thin Lizzy and Chicago in Germany to finish an all day/night concert. When Chicago finally played EVERYbody was sitting just chilling and loving it. Those were the days... So this is the "Official" 66 y/o thread
I remember the first time I heard that. Even after seeing things like this it blew me away. Very rarely have I ever seen any musician in The Zone like he was here. Just amazing.

LOL. yeah, and it really was never better than this night. Don't get me wrong, always great they were, but Kath played his MVP game in front of a camera. You may be able to find it, I looked for a minute so I could attach it for you but didn't see it, where Jim Pankow (trombone) was on some New Year's Bash TV show ... not long after this concert. I don't really remember if the whole band was there or not. It may have been local Chicago actually, but I just don't remember. I have, however, seen it online. Anyway, to the point: the MC, or interviewer, or whatever, asked Pankow about their "hot young guitar player". Pancow answered by saying something along the lines of, Terry put on a magic show up in Tanglewood a few months ago and we have been getting booking calls ever since..... Some people said it was coke, others said whatever, but it was goddamn masterful.
I was privileged to see them several times in the early days and they were amazing. Not many bands are better live, but they truly were. Kath is a god! Hope he’s still playing somewhere. RIP Terry.

This is simply one of the most incredible guitar improvisations ever performed, and the band members clearly recognize its brilliance. Their facial expressions and how they step back and let Terry Kath take the lead speak volumes. He was truly amazing!
I think of all the rock stars we tragically lost, losing Terry Kath hurt me the most. That guitar playing was far beyond most other mortals, then or now. Miss Alvin Lee too with his ES-335 belting out "I'm Going Home".
Terry improvised every night. Every single night and not just on this song. He even improvised the lyrics and his melody when he sang lead on It Better End Soon. If you get ahold of recent rerelease of Live At Carnegie Hall with every song played all week long you will hear lots of guitar solos played differently on same songs night after night. A Chicago concert from 1970 to 1975 was a guessing game. Every audience member knew every song but in the middle of one, Terry on guitar or even the horns would go off on a long jam. It was magic.
Anyone who doesn't agree that Terry's solo in 25 or 6 to 4 isn't one of the most amazing (if not THE most) guitar solos in rock n roll history is just out of their mind. Even Hendrix said that Kath was the greatest guitarist in the universe.
54 years later and this song is currently being featured on a TV commercial and sounds as good as ever. One of Rock & Roll’s greatest hits by one of Rock’s most talented bands of all-time. The guitar solo is mind-numbing by the late, great Terry Kath - who Jimi Hendrix once said was a better guitarist than he was. One of my all-time favorite songs. When Jimi Hendrix says he was in awe of Terry Kath’s guitar playing, then you know what kind of talent Terry had. He and that band were genius level in musicianship.
This guitar solo is totally astonishing... and that amazing Chicago band not only kept up, they just kept speeding up as if challenging (but not intimidating) Terry. It seems he could have played even faster! So much respect! I wonder if Jimi was there that night digging it... Then, less than 2 months later, on 9/18/70... Jimi was gone. Chicago died with Terry Kath. What a remarkable guitarist. Not that they didn´t do some pleasant stuff after, but that driving engine went from eight cylinders to four.

I wonder if the people in the audience actually realize what they were actually watching. This was a man. A guitar and an amp no auto tune no smoke no lights shredding like no other guitarist ever had before. This man Teri Kath was a rare talent. Like no other. That my friends is the best 2 minute solo u will ever hear. I watched the Teri Kath experience on TH-cam. Best 5 bucks I ever spent. There are 3-5 of the best guitarist talking on Teri. They all say hey. I been playing guitar for 30-40 years. I know exactly what set up Teri was playing. To the strings to the fret board. To all the little things he did to his guitar. I know exactly what he did. But I can’t get the same sound he produced to save my life. Teri was in a zone here. 1 of a kind. Look at the trombone player. He’s in awe. RIP mister Kath. No one will ever top this 2 minutes. Ever. A man a guitar and an amp. Wow. Talent. Pure talent.
A good friend, a serious guitar player, went up to Tanglewood that summer just to hear Kath. When he came back he couldn't even talk about it. Blown totally away.

@@321ssteeeeeve When Terry was gone, I stayed a fan for a bit and even bought they're next album with Donnie Dacus on guitar. That did it for me. I was done. Being a trumpet player, I was into different styles and sounds and fortunately. Tower of Power were rapidly becoming my favorite band even before Terry was gone.
Such a stupid death. Drugs were everywhere and we lost so many great musicians back then due to them. I never thought Terry meant to kiil himself, but whatever way you look at it, he did.

It's sad to see that most of this generation doesn't recognize the advances that these guys made in music. Most of their music wouldn't exist without these guys. "Their" referring to Gen xers. My phone wants me to type xerox instead of Gen exers.
I am so thankful that I grew up with this. There is NOTHING like this today and I feel so bad for the kids who missed the greatest generation of music ever!! Kath was an absolute monster and was as good as any guitarist.
I feel more sorry for the 1000+ generations of humans before this who never had the chance to hear this piece of epic music. At least it's hear now for us to keep enjoying. TH-cam is one of our species' greatest inventions.
He's a legend among legends, but my generation (1981) and still now have been treated to legends too, my personal favorite being Dave Grohl of Nirvana and The Foo Fighters. I hate comparing, it's just genuine raw talent shining through in different ways and I'm so glad I get to enjoy it.

I absolutely love watching a brilliant musician get lost in a grove and just go off. I feel like they are on a journey and take me along for the ride, and man what a ride. Music nowadays just doesn't do that.

@@latkagravas2967 YES!!! That is one of the greatest solos I've ever seen. I have always considered Prince better than Hendrix (I know that's not a popular opinion) but Prince did things with a fret neck that had to be recorded on video or wouldn't be believed.

Everything about that solo is pure gold, even the side stuff - Terry ripping at it while barely looking at the neck, playing most of it with his thumb wrapped over the neck, almost strumming at times but still hitting notes cleanly. The guy was a monster player. A special talent. RIP.

Back when I was young I went to a concert where Gary Wright was leading off for Chicago. By the time Chicago got on stage the arena was filled with marijuana haze. It made Chicago's concert almost god-like. I didn't know who I like best but Kath was right up there.
"Kath then picked up a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it." Those were his last words. To assuage Johnson's concerns, Kath showed Johnson the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently unbeknownst to Kath, the semi-automatic had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot..."
I told one of my buddies who's a very talented musician, and chicago fan how kath died and he was in disbelief (because he loves guns too) and showed him the part of The Terry Kath Experience that talks about him, and he got real quiet. Love kath, love chicago, he went way too soon.
More people than we know have made that mistake with guns! Ive been a avid gun user all my adult life. Ive read Terry's tragic story and grieve the loss of him!
Anybody with any sense would know not to play that kind of game with a gun. My father was a Marine, and he taught me never point a gun at anybody unless you're ready to pull the trigger. Always assume a gun is loaded. Never put a gun to your own head. Common sense, but then again, common sense isn't so common.
i actually think this video is mostly bullshit,first instance. you can see the truss bar on his guitar is bent like a mother fucker early in the song. second, he's never actually using his whammy bar when its actually needed during his bends. i love the song but i think this is one of the early cases of bands having to play to their record live.

One of the rare times live was better than recorded. Lead singer, drummer, bass, horns and Smoking lead guitar. This is as good as rock and roll gets. Gets better by the year. Amazing performance.

Right, Damo, better than any studio could record- the way the rev up, from adjusting the drums and chug along, and that iconic chord change comes in gives you chills- the guitar solo from the heart. Terry Kath was way underrated. He did not go to music school like the others. He taught himself to play. There will never be another guitarist like him. RIP.
He actually took lessons form a guitar teacher in Elmhurst Illinois named Stu Pierce. How do I know? I went to college in 1974 at Triton College in River Grove, a suburb close by. And the guitar player who beat me out of jazz band took lessons from Stu Pierce. Everyone wanted to study with Stu because of the Chicago/Terry connection. Memories.

Brings tears man .. I was on my way to Highschool that fateful morning. We had the radio tuned to WMMS out of Cleveland. I still remember the shock of hearing that he accidentally shot himself and died. His head laid back on the couch, and he was gone, Just like that. He forgot about the one in the chamber. Terry Kath's speed and precision (as well as passion) on guitar defies human abilities. Even Jimi Hendrix said that Kath was the best ever. He was a gift from God taken from us too soon. I never tire of this song. This is the best live guitar performance that I have ever seen, and I've certainly seen my share.

I remember 14 too when this song came out. I remember riding up to Kokomo IN with my neighbor buddies and “Jeff” was 16 and was allowed to borrow the family car so we could run up to the mall. I had to lie to my parents. Lol. This song came on. The windows were already down. The car went faster and the radio went full-blast. Yes!

The freebird solo is ranked number 3 according to them, but the guy who made/ played the solo isn’t even on their list for 100 greatest guitarists. It’s the same thing with Terry. 3 or 4 days after this concert, Tanglewood had a mini Woodstock. I went and saw it's a beautiful day, Jethro Tull, and last up The Who. What a night I'll never forget it. 4 days after that, I was heading g to Vietnam. Today, July 19th, 2024, I wish I could have this concert again. Peace out everyone.

I was driving to work the following day at the ripe old age of 22 and I just picked up a cup of coffee. On the radio came the announcement of Terry's passing. I literally was in shock.
I'm fortunate to have seen him 8 times. To me he was the best and I saw a lot of bands in the day.

I'm 66 and from Chicago I remember the birth of this band and we all understood they were seriously great musicians from the go.
I am 66 lol, was born in Chicago, but lived all over the country, and the world. I saw Thin Lizzy and Chicago in Germany to finish an all day/night concert. When Chicago finally played EVERYbody was sitting just chilling and loving it. Those were the days... So this is the "Official" 66 y/o thread

LOL. yeah, and it really was never better than this night. Don't get me wrong, always great they were, but Kath played his MVP game in front of a camera. You may be able to find it, I looked for a minute so I could attach it for you but didn't see it, where Jim Pankow (trombone) was on some New Year's Bash TV show ... not long after this concert. I don't really remember if the whole band was there or not. It may have been local Chicago actually, but I just don't remember. I have, however, seen it online. Anyway, to the point: the MC, or interviewer, or whatever, asked Pankow about their "hot young guitar player". Pancow answered by saying something along the lines of, Terry put on a magic show up in Tanglewood a few months ago and we have been getting booking calls ever since.....
Some people said it was coke, others said whatever, but it was goddamn masterful.
I was privileged to see them several times in the early days and they were amazing. Not many bands are better live, but they truly were. Kath is a god! Hope he’s still playing somewhere. RIP Terry.

This is simply one of the most incredible guitar improvisations ever performed, and the band members clearly recognize its brilliance. Their facial expressions and how they step back and let Terry Kath take the lead speak volumes. He was truly amazing!

I think of all the rock stars we tragically lost, losing Terry Kath hurt me the most. That guitar playing was far beyond most other mortals, then or now. Miss Alvin Lee too with his ES-335 belting out "I'm Going Home".
Terry improvised every night. Every single night and not just on this song. He even improvised the lyrics and his melody when he sang lead on It Better End Soon. If you get ahold of recent rerelease of Live At Carnegie Hall with every song played all week long you will hear lots of guitar solos played differently on same songs night after night. A Chicago concert from 1970 to 1975 was a guessing game. Every audience member knew every song but in the middle of one, Terry on guitar or even the horns would go off on a long jam. It was magic.

The guitar solo is mind-numbing by the late, great Terry Kath - who Jimi Hendrix once said was a better guitarist than he was. One of my all-time favorite songs. A guitar and an amp no auto tune no smoke no lights shredding like no other guitarist ever had before. This man Teri Kath was a rare talent. Like no other. That my friends is the best 2 minute solo u will ever hear. I watched the Teri Kath experience on TH-cam. Best 5 bucks I ever spent. There are 3-5 of the best guitarist talking on Teri. They all say hey. I been playing guitar for 30-40 years. I know exactly what set up Teri was playing. To the strings to the fret board. To all the little things he did to his guitar. I know exactly what he did. But I can’t get the same sound he produced to save my life. Teri was in a zone here. 1 of a kind. Look at the trombone player. He’s in awe. RIP mister Kath. No one will ever top this 2 minutes. Ever. A man a guitar and an amp. Wow. Talent. Pure talent.
He sure was in some zone, and I'm not sure what planet. That was intense and he was like one with that guitar.
A good friend, a serious guitar player, went up to Tanglewood that summer just to hear Kath. When he came back he couldn't even talk about it. Blown totally away.

And he blew his brains out. Terry Kath was a victim of the Los Angeles crazed Music Industry in the 1970s. There are many other casualties. I lived in LA in the 1970s, and to 1990. My advice is get the fuck out.

That did it for me. I was done. Being a trumpet player, I was into different styles and sounds and fortunately. Tower of Power were rapidly becoming my favorite band even before Terry was gone.

I am so thankful that I grew up with this. There is NOTHING like this today and I feel so bad for the kids who missed the greatest generation of music ever!! Kath was an absolute monster and was as good as any guitarist.
I feel more sorry for the 1000+ generations of humans before this who never had the chance to hear this piece of epic music. At least it's hear now for us to keep enjoying. TH-cam is one of our species' greatest inventions.

He's a legend among legends, but my generation (1981) and still now have been treated to legends too, my personal favorite being Dave Grohl of Nirvana and The Foo Fighters. I hate comparing, it's just genuine raw talent shining through in different ways and I'm so glad I get to enjoy it.

I absolutely love watching a brilliant musician get lost in a grove and just go off. I feel like they are on a journey and take me along for the ride, and man what a ride. Music nowadays just doesn't do that.

He was 6' 2" tall and stuck together, so he WAS a large man. He was also only 24 years old when he torched that solo.

@@latkagravas2967 YES!!! That is one of the greatest solos I've ever seen. I have always considered Prince better than Hendrix (I know that's not a popular opinion) but Prince did things with a fret neck that had to be recorded on video or wouldn't be believed.

Everything about that solo is pure gold, even the side stuff - Terry ripping at it while barely looking at the neck, playing most of it with his thumb wrapped over the neck, almost strumming at times but still hitting notes cleanly. The guy was a monster player. A special talent. RIP.

He just died way too young. Most great guitarists like Terry tend to get more recognition with age. I think he was about 31 when the tragedy struck his life. (RIP)Terry, you were taken way too soon. Back when I was young I went to a concert where Gary Wright was leading off for Chicago. By the time Chicago got on stage the arena was filled with marijuana haze. It made Chicago's concert almost god-like. I didn't know who I like best but Kath was right up there.

This clip is my therapy lately.. been watching it many times in a day and sharing with as many people I can..
"Kath then picked up a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it." Those were his last words. To assuage Johnson's concerns, Kath showed Johnson the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently unbeknownst to Kath, the semi-automatic had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot..."
I told one of my buddies who's a very talented musician, and chicago fan how kath died and he was in disbelief (because he loves guns too) and showed him the part of The Terry Kath Experience that talks about him, and he got real quiet. Love kath, love chicago, he went way too soon.
More people than we know have made that mistake with guns! Ive been a avid gun user all my adult life. Ive read Terry's tragic story and grieve the loss of him!
Anybody with any sense would know not to play that kind of game with a gun. My father was a Marine, and he taught me never point a gun at anybody unless you're ready to pull the trigger. Always assume a gun is loaded. Never put a gun to your own head. Common sense, but then again, common sense isn't so common.

i actually think this video is mostly bullshit,first instance. you can see the truss bar on his guitar is bent like a mother fucker early in the song. second, he's never actually using his whammy bar when its actually needed during his bends.

One of the rare times live was better than recorded. Lead singer, drummer, bass, horns and Smoking lead guitar. This is as good as rock and roll gets. Gets better by the year. Amazing performance.

Right, Damo, better than any studio could record- the way the rev up, from adjusting the drums and chug along, and that iconic chord change comes in gives you chills- the guitar solo from the heart. Terry Kath was way underrated. He did not go to music school like the others. He taught himself to play. There will never be another guitarist like him. RIP.
He actually took lessons form a guitar teacher in Elmhurst Illinois named Stu Pierce. How do I know? I went to college in 1974 at Triton College in River Grove, a suburb close by. And the guitar player who beat me out of jazz band took lessons from Stu Pierce. Everyone wanted to study with Stu because of the Chicago/Terry connection. Memories.

I still remember the shock of hearing that he accidentally shot himself and died. His head laid back on the couch, and he was gone, Just like that. He forgot about the one in the chamber. Terry Kath's speed and precision (as well as passion) on guitar defies human abilities. Even Jimi Hendrix said that Kath was the best ever. He was a gift from God taken from us too soon. I never tire of this song. This is the best live guitar performance that I have ever seen, and I've certainly seen my share.
