    Hands down the best orchestral original soundtrack ever made for any game. Jeremy Soule is a genius.

      Wolf Heathen - Chiptune & Synthwave I was at my local game store and this idiot employee claimed Morrowind and Skyrim have excellent soundtracks but Oblivion’s is terrible.
      Straight up made me dislike him with a single bad opinion. That and he wouldn’t stop talking to me. Just let he browse in peace!!!

    One thing that's always bothered me about Bethesda games is the rhetoric I always hear: "If you install mods, you'll get an amazing experience" This may be true, and the mod community is full of some creative and talented people, but I feel like Bethesda leans so hard on its fan community that they just don't care about the product once it's on the shelf. Mods should be a nifty extra, not an essential element to make a multi-million selling game passable. P.S. this is no offense to you Derek. Great review, as always! :D

    "The world definitely has some pretty landscapes but It never really felt like I was in a fantasy world. This was a little bit of a letdown to me considering the wildly alien landscapes someone could find in Morrowind" - Derek
    1. Are you serious? Cyrodiil and Morrowind are two completely different landscape you silly person. That's like someone saying "I am dissatisfied because I didn't find near the same or similar landscape in the North Pole as I did in Northern Africa." WELL DUHH! you were not supposed to. Bethesda was sticking to the script when designing each landscape for each game. One trippy and alien. The other is wild and filled with multiple terrain.
    2. Your obviously biased towards Morrowind and that is ok. Just don't use a game that alot of people find better than Morrowind "make it seem better" than Oblivion.
    Ps. If you don't feel like your in a fantasy world when running up on Oblivion gates, fighting mythical creatures, spotting ruin, ect, your trying your hardest not to envision.

    I bought this game for my xbox when i was living in Japan. English voices but everything was in Japanese, including menu's and quests, etc, and my Japanese was very basic.
    I kept dying over and over again for no reason, and after a couple of weeks i had to get a girlfriend over to tell me what was happening. She tells me some message is coming up about a dream. Turns out i eventually figured out i had been bitten by a vampire and was dying because i was running around in the sunlight.

    I'm in the mood for a long RPG and I'm going for Elder Scrolls but I can't decide which one should I play: Skyrim VR (PS4) or Oblivion Gmae Of The Year (PS3). I scratched Oblivion for a couple hours some years ago and didn't notice any performance issues or bugs. Which one should I play in your opinion?

    I love this game and I only experienced it on PS3. Initially I didn't know you can fast travel immediately, I thought you had to discover locations first like in Skyrim. I do agree with all the criticisms you made but I love the game regardless. I couldn't get into Skyrim but Oblivion sucked me in immediately.
    I have one question for you Derek.
    What exactly does this game have a spot in the game collection? This review seemed to highlight criticisms more than praise.

      Last year, I purchased the gog version, that I wil try someday when I get a new computer. With and without mods, of course, because I really like to play the games the way they were made and with the improvements from the community.

    I have Oblivion for PC. The terrain loading at weird times is also evident on PC. At best, It would load at like 50 meter diameter. If you tried to scale the terrain loading to be larger, the frame rate would slow down to a crawl. Other than this, I had no problem with Oblivion. I never used any mods on it and it plays fine. I've spent hours on this game and I love it!

  • @mattlandry

    If I remember correctly, The PS3 version came out months after the 360 version so they probably made the PS3 version include the fixes they put in updates on the 360. Even fully patched the game is very buggy. That's just how many bethesda games are unfortunately. Still the PS3 version had some new issues they should have patched anyway.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As I've come to understand it, the game was ported by a third-party developer, and wasn't optimized very well. The process introduced new bugs which weren't ever really addressed, but apparently many were fixed in the GOTY release, which I don't have unfortunately.

    It goes Daggerfall > Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion > Arena for me. This game I bought day one with the collector's edition for PC. Installed it onto my laptop and it crashed. I had to install something called Oldblivion to get it to run, which basically stripped all the pretty stuff away leaving you with an unmodded, flawed game. I later got a job and built a PC to run the game. Let's just say by then there were some good mods and it fixed all those issues you brought up.
    Overall I did enjoy the game. I only played the Main Quest, Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild quest lines. Sounds like you enjoyed those too! I didn't like a lot of the level design. It always made me feel like rushing through everything until I found something worth spending my time with. My first quest was getting stuck in some Dunmer's painting with these gorilla-looking monsters everywhere. I believe they were trolls. Very cool, but I panicked cause I couldn't hurt the damn things until I brought the difficulty down.
    I'm surprised you reviewed this plain jane, vanilla! I guess it's the more universal experience. I'm glad I modded it and avoided the real Oblivion experience. I wouldn't have played it without those mods. Looking good, by the way, Derek! Keep up these awesome reviews. :)

    Great video! I completed all the factions and story lines on the GOTY edition for PS3 and I really didn't experience many bugs that ruined the game. The Xbox 360 version is definitely better, same with Skyrim, but it is still a passable and enjoyable experience on PS3. In other words, if that is your only way to play then don't let that be a reason to not play it. I love Oblivion but you're right about it never really feeling like a fantasy world, especially after the awesome world of Morrowind.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sam! And I do agree with you on that point. I guess what I meant when I said to avoid the PS3 version at all costs was more like, "at all costs, excepting that it prevent you from playing the game at all..." But that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily. xD

  • @Trialwolf
    @Trialwolf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Overall agree. when you first enter the world you get overwhelmed with what is possible but once you get into it content is rather repetitive and mundane. Plus the changes they made to streamline the series really hurt the game overall as it felt like the game was hand-holding you the entire time.
    People tend to look at these games with really think rose-tinted glasses or are remembering the game with all the player mods installed. I personally think Bethesda relies too heavily on use created content as they release a bare bones game and let the players fill it with content while Bethesda gets the praise.
    Then there was Bethesda trying to charge for player mods on Steam but that's a story for another day.
    Very good video, good pacing and a balance of what's good and bad.

      +SeafoamSmiles They were pretty outstanding. That glitch with the legion guard putting around on his invisible scooter was priceless! I think it really deserves some custom sound effects.
      Still, one of my favorite moments of the playthrough was ensuring that Seafoam made his way back to the ocean, whilst dodging attacks from Will-o'-the-wisps. :)

    The PS3 Version is not worth it even if you can stand all the bugs because it's IMPOSSIBLE to complete every quest in that Version. The Cure Vamp Quest can not be completed.
    If you're new to the game and you try that Quest, you'll spend around like 1 or 2 hours on a quest that can't be finished.

    I have it on PS3 and have pretty much never run into a bug.
    Also the Xbox 360 was known to be a pretty buggy mess, since it was released a year earlier. The PS3 version didn't have any patches because it was released a year later.

      Also I played the standard edition, and based on one of your comments I have also played it on the same, similar, version of the PS3. I got my PS3 on the day of release here in Europe.

    I never finished this game. The stronger I got, the more outclassed by the enemies I was. Even with permanent 100% Invisibility on crafted Items. Yes, no one could attack me. But it still took ages to kill any kind of enemy. Over 5 min. to kill a random group of trolls, is ridiculous.
    Cheap ass, sewer Bandits wearing all sorts of high end glass and ebony armor and weapons.
    Why even care about an Deadra attack? The sewer Bandits will rekt them!

    I used to love this game, but I think Skyrim ruined it for me. Going into Oblivion gets gets boring and the level-up system is so bass-ackwards. Either you play the game naturally and end up with an underpowered character, or you learn how the system works, game it, and inevitably build an overpowered character.

    I bought the PS3 version of Oblivion several months ago and after enjoying the hell out of Skyrim I thought I'd love this one too. The only thing I've really enjoyed so far are the relatively short load times. Otherwise, it has been a rather bland experience. This review reaffirms my feelings and is well done. I might try and go back to Oblivion just to finish it off, but if I don't I probably won't feel like I've missed much.

    there must be something wrong with your copy as I put hundreds of hours into oblivion on PS3 and NEVER ran into any bugs or glitches that severe, apart from sometimes being unable to complete the vampirism cure questline the game ran like a dream for me and ran better than the 360 version which I played for nearly 100 hours on my brothers 360 :P it loaded faster, I had less pop in, the graphics looked sharper and I could rife a horse without it saying 'loading area' every 30 seconds :P oblivion on PS3 kicked ass, skyrim on the other hand... xD

    "Install a lot of mods and have a blast" more like have a lot of crashes lol. You really need to be extra careful when installing mods on an Elder Scrolls game.
    Oblivion is definitely my least favorite entry in the Elder Scrolls Series. DaggerFall and Morrowind are the Best. Arena is just a mess but they had to start somewhere and Skyrim is just way too streamlined but mods on PC help a lot.

    Good review. Man, I forgot how poorly Oblivion ran on the PS3 - it's criminal that Bethesda never even tried to fix it. I suppose it was the dawn of the patch era, but still... Did performance degrade even further the more you played, or was it consistently bollocks from the start?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michael Connell It was gradual. I've even heard that if the save file exceeds 10MB your game just stops working outright. There were some MAJOR problems later on that I actually wasn't recording for that made the game look like the apocalypse was occurring. Like, even more-so than when the apocalypse actually WAS occurring in-game. It's somewhere in my playthrough on my streaming channel... but I honestly can't be bothered to watch through my 60-hour playthrough to find it again xD

    This is the worst Elder Scrolls made. The next gen graphics and the huge open world fantasy setting of the game was why it was so successful. It was the first huge next gen open world game at that time, and it looked amazing. It was breathtaking and it blew me away when I played it on my 360. There's no doubt it completely made us blind to all the ridiculous flaws that the game has.
    Besides graphics and combat, it was a huge downgrade from Morrowind.

      +SuperDerek RPGs I don't deny its prob a lot better on the 360 but I'm kind of already up and running now. Do you know if Fallout 3 and New Vegas are the same way with being under par as opposed to the 360 versions?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to my knowledge. I'm primarily a PS3 kind of guy, and never ran into any major issues on any of the Fallout releases, or Skyrim. I think this time we were just kind of left out in the cold because Bethesda didn't handle the port of Oblivion directly. They outsourced it to some other company who, I'm guessing didn't bother to port the patches... :-\

    • @Mr.Monky420
      @Mr.Monky420 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SuperDerek RPGs That's a shame. I really never got into Oblivion back in the day cause I was spoiled with Fallout 3 on my 360 and just for some reason couldn't see the charm everyone was hooked on. Loved Skyrim though when that came out and I haven't really touched my 360 in years. I've always been a Sony fan though. PS2 will always still be my favorite system. I'm trying to try a whole lot of games on my 3 cause I got so many exclusives I wanted to try out. I just kinda figured a few days ago "Ya know what I don't think I was being very fair to Oblivion my first attempt." So I picked it up yesterday and I have by no means gotten far at all in it but I'm having a good time with it and I don't know why I was so critical of it in the past. Sorry I ramble like an old fart.

    • @SuperDerek

    nice review man! I'd have to say this is one of the most boring(est) RPGs of all time. At the time it seemed promise a lot and had that nice 2006 bloom enhanced graphics but dig into the game and its hell lifeless and insipid.
    Theres only like 4 voice actors for all characters.
    All the faces look ugly.
    Technically good, even beautiful music but its dull video game music which pales next to the Japanese maestro's.
    Boring plot involving the daft looking 'martin' voiced by sean bean!
    The graphics have aged badly

Guy wouldn't know a real RPG if it utterly wasted 90 hours of his life from start to finish. And I almost puked when I saw what you decided to display on your shelf in the background.
