Thanks again everyone, I hope the guide is helpful. Let me know which of the 5 you would pick to start your army or let me know what models you would like to see a painting guide for next time around 😀🥳
Hey, I think all of the paints for the armour are in the video. Outside of those; Symbols: it’s just bone and off whites with a sepia wash. Bolter: dark blue greys like eshin then a few highlights with lighter variants. Then the wash then nurgling green for some scratches. Eyes: same Vallejo fluro green. I think that’s everything 🤔
@Flashing Badger Painting thank you so much. I love the way you did the grim dark look. It is by far my favorite paint job I have seen! As someone that has the entire Citadel range, dozens of Vallejo Model Game and Metal Color, almost 200 Pro Acryl and a few random others, picking color schemes is THE most difficult thing for me. I realy screwed myself with analysi paralysis by having so many.
Yeah I can appreciate that frustration. I hope the guide has helped and for me at least I try to convince myself just to look at the bottom of the paint pots to see colours and not worry about names or brands and then just back myself and put paint to model. 👍
I'm looking to start a Blood Angels army, and painting has never been my forte. I'm looking for a very specific shade of red on my Marines and I'm trying to figure out a good baseline method to go with. That third method resulted in my absolute favorite model from this video, I _love_ the way that model seems to shine. When I sit down and start practicing on my Marines, I would love to try to figure out how to recreate that style with my potential color schemes.

@@flashingbadgerpainting I'm beginning my first Space Marines force of Blood Angels too after more than 20 years playing necrons only, so you bet i'd like to see every squad and units you paint ! If I can have a similar effect on my minis my whole army will look great ! (Also I want them to be the ones who fought in the Devastation of Baal so it makes sense they have a lot of battle damages ^^). Please continue that super work !
@@flashingbadgerpainting Hey mate that's me again ! Could you tell me plz : I intend to do the helmet of my assault teams in yellow like the codex says nut I don't know how to do the same effect you did for the red parts. Any piece of advice would be very welcome ^^
This is amazing. Just got back into the hobby with a few blood angels kits after over twenty years away (used to be more of a painter than a gamer back in the day) so this is a real game changer. My eyes are bad these days and I have a bit of a tremble in my hands, but I’m going to have a bloody good crack at it! Cheers! (Edit: that last one legit looks like a John Blanche painting come to life!)
Amazing! Thanks Steve and more importantly, welcome back to the hobby! 😀 I recently came back from around 20 years removed as well 👍 great way to unwind
@@flashingbadgerpainting I couldn’t agree more - it was always a happy place for me, and I’m really excited about getting them painted up (got the boxed game with the marines from that, plus the combat patrol one… things really have changed since I was last painting with flying hovertanks and loads of different types of marine it seems, so it’s a whole new world all over again, really!). Thanks again, and all the best!

Great comparison of different painting styles! The Baal Red contrast gives off an oldschool bright red 1990s vibe since the colour is so opaque. I was checking the contrast paint comparison video by Sword 'n' Steele for other reds, Blood Angels Red seems really thin in comparison and not great as a basecoat, it just seems like a red tint... Fleshtearers Red seems like a good alternative if going for a more "realistic" red. My biggest problem with the contrast method is that if you make a mistake later it can be harder to fix the red!
Thanks so much for the feedback and also for the advice on the other contrast reds 😀 Glad you liked it and let me know if there’s something you’d like to see next 😀
Yep. I bought a second hand large set of citadel which is why I have so many of them however whites, bone colours, light browns and yellows I’m using almost all Vallejo at the moment. I also like AK interactive bright colours like magenta.
It really is! On Amazon and eBay I just searched for cork bottle stoppers and there were. A bunch of different sizes. I’ve bought a handful and they obviously last and don’t need replacing. I then cut some double sided tape and place that on top to hold the model and find that this remains sticky for months. 👍
@@flashingbadgerpainting thanks ever so much for the quick reply! I plan on buying and painting my very first warhammer this next week! So will defo buy that! Cheers
Maaaan all these look really good!! but I have to say that GD version is Fire!! Iam actually getting back to blood angels and I am considering adapting this Method! Thanks man and Subbed :)

what Blues would you recommend if you wanted to recreate the Grim Dark style you used here but for Ultramarines? I wanna make some corpses for my Horus Heresy stuff and have a mix of blood angels and ultramarines be the bodies so the grim dark look fits long dead bodies
Awesome! I’d still start with the black and dark browns but then for the blues I’d go for a mix of like a Kantor Blue with Black to make a dark blue. Then shift into your classic ultramarine blue colours and maybe mix a temple guard blue lighter colour in as a 50/50 mix highlight at the end. But if you want a different vibrant blue that has the tint of green more like a thousand sons colour then instead look at colours like Incubi Darkness, Thousand Soms Blue/Sotek green etc. Hope that helps 😀
@@flashingbadgerpainting thank you. Don’t forget to turn these videos into TH-cam shorts if you haven’t already! Really, once again, thank you for the video and the response.
I guess i like red lmao. My Necrons are Novokh Dynasty. My melee army for space marines is Blood Angles. My shoot space marines are Exorcist Chapter. My Eldar are.....Red lol oh. my Tyrand's are blue...yeah.
Sooooo... blue huh... didn't think they deserved red lol I get it lol blue is a very nice choice.. I use blue on my dark eldar kabal with bright green highlights and weathering oh and of course blood for the blood God... but I mainly play and paint ork deathskulls..I guess I like blue 😆
As a beginner should I just start with te first one to get practice in and build my skill or could I jump into (while watching the tutorial of course) the GW style or 3rd style? What do you recommend?
Hey mate, best thing I would recommend as a beginner is have a go at each of the styles that interest you. No time would be wasted as you’ll get a feel for different styles and what you enjoy painting. Are you keen on painting a whole Blood Angels force? If so, focus on the style you really like and maybe put aside a couple of minis that are just, in your mind, practice test pieces 👍
Amazing! You may have spotted them already but I have a small ongoing series on the channel where I paint a blood angels army as well. I’m a couple of squads in. So you can join me on the ride. Spoiler alert, new BA video this weekend 👀 AND if you are looking for a place to get more tips and plenty of support/hype, you’re welcome to join our discord. discord.gg/hjHkm4GC
I can’t wait to see them! Tag me in on Instagram if you have it so I can see how you go 😀 I just ordered my first box of space marines to start a BA army, so feel free to subscribe if you want to see me paint some more just like #5. 😎
I prime my blood angels with Vallejo dark green. Then zenithal with white ink, then all over with thin Mephiston red, and just the top with Vallejo bloody red. The green shadows look a lot more interesting than black in my opinion. I then finish with fire orange highlights with a brush.
What unit are these models? Im starting my blood angels and going to do the Grim Dark scheme! I’ve also ordered vampire heads online so some models that don’t wear helmets will be vampiric with pale grey skin :)
Great idea! These models are the Primaris Intercessors which are a all rounder troop choice. I’ve also put another video up where I paint and entire squad of jet pack Inceptors in the Grim Dark style which you may enjoy 😀 Best of luck and I’m looking forward to seeing how you go with yours. Vampire heads sound awesome!
If I was going to replicate the last scheme for another chapter (Blue Ultramarines) would it still be best to start with Rhinox hide and then mix of Rhinox hide and blue?
Awesome! Yeah I like that idea. Do a single test model first to make sure you are happy with it. I was planning on painting a blue marine soon and figured this is how I was going to approach it as well.
@@flashingbadgerpaintingthank you! I've already started some Blood Angels using the method and really loving the result, but my son wants his own Kill Team as Ultramarines despite me trying to persuade him Blood Angels are cooler! 😂
Haha! Yep one of my boys is the same and my attempts to steer him away from the boys in blue only made him want them more. Enjoy painting and gaming with him, I look forward to hearing how you go with it or you can send me pics of them on Instagram 👍
I think brown would still be a great base for them. I've found that what works for red also works well for blue. So dark brown into dark blue into medium into light. If it were me i'd lean into those dark turquoise blues like Incubi Darkness or Stegadon blue for the first dark colour.
This maybe a lil nitpicking but the shoulder pads should be switched. Chapter shoulder marker is left shoulder while the right one shows company shoulder marker
What a pick up. I’ve just finished a squad of marines and slid across the house in my socks to see what side I put the chapter symbol on. *phew* Nailed it.
Hey, just with black paint slightly thinned down and a sharp brush. Took my time and wiped away any mistakes. You could also use the technique where you lightly gloss the model and use a specific panel line ink but I prefer the other way 👍
Great job ! Could be cool to see a Grimdark Salamander, because the are no good video on it on internet, most of the time the looks like dark angels or are not either grim or dark sadly :s
It was my favourite as well. So much so that I have ended up starting a Blood Angels army in this style. If you’re keen to see more it, there are small series up on the channel where I select and paint different units
Hey! My advice would be ; - give the contrast paints a good shake first - use of of their primers like Wraithbone - unlike their other paints, don’t be afraid to load your brush up and put these on thicker - once it’s in place, they dry quickly so don’t move them around with your brush or the paint will tear. Try that and let me know how you go 👍 Thanks for reaching out. If you like, you can jump into our discord to show your pics and get more advice and encouragement. discord.gg/MuAfxSC9
It always trips me out to hear the Catachan accent like that. I've been painting blood angels for almost two years now and I have some notes intended as potentially interesting rather than critical. The super bright red and yellow one looks straight off the old box art from the early days, minus the goofy limitations of old casting methods. The last method was nice, but with blood angels lore being so focused on their passion for the arts and the bolter being a holy relic, the idea of a rusty bolter is slightly uncomfortable. My go-to method is similar to the 'Eavy Metal style with a few extra steps, and my favourite style for my "hero" models uses both the 'Eavy Metal style and glazes for silky transitions between layers.
Hey thanks so much for giving it this much thought and then sharing with others here because you raise some great points. Yep the bright red reminds me of the original art as well and I felt odd at first making rusty bolters but the more I thought about it, I wanted to try and sell this idea of how they can hold these important values under regular and even difficult conditions but if a small force were completely cut off and over an extended period of time were so broken down, exhausted and focused solely on survival against the odds, could their values and beliefs be tested to such a point where they couldn’t sustain it? And I think something that makes them so interesting is that they would be willing to die before they broke this honour… but what if another driving force meant that death wasn’t an option yet? This conflict just absolutely pulling them apart. Maybe that’s too deep for me. Maybe I wanted an excuse to paint them more weathered 🤣
👀 Style 2 and 4 both feature layering and each of these steps use either water or thinner rather than straight paint. I discuss that a couple of times but the video is already nearing 30mins long so I need to find ways to keep it moving.
@@flashingbadgerpainting I'm glad you agree, I only wish they brought Red Ink back... I miss my old colors. Army painter Dragon Red base, black twist top Blood red and stinky pop-top Red Ink. There is no finer finish.

Hey,
I think all of the paints for the armour are in the video. Outside of those;

Bolter: dark blue greys like eshin then a few highlights with lighter variants. Then the wash then nurgling green for some scratches.
Eyes: same Vallejo fluro green.

Hey thanks so much. I really liked how it came out so I’ve decided I’ll start a Blood Angels force like that. Working on my first squad at the moment. Would you be interested in watching if I film that journey?
@@flashingbadgerpainting I'm beginning my first Space Marines force of Blood Angels too after more than 20 years playing necrons only, so you bet i'd like to see every squad and units you paint ! If I can have a similar effect on my minis my whole army will look great ! (Also I want them to be the ones who fought in the Devastation of Baal so it makes sense they have a lot of battle damages ^^). Please continue that super work !
Unreal! I’ve started filming my first squad tonight 😀
@@flashingbadgerpainting Cool ! Looking forward to see that ! (For Sanguinius !)
@@flashingbadgerpainting Hey mate that's me again ! Could you tell me plz : I intend to do the helmet of my assault teams in yellow like the codex says nut I don't know how to do the same effect you did for the red parts. Any piece of advice would be very welcome ^^
A man after my own heart. Thank you sir ❤
No worries! Hope it was helpful!
Would love to see you do this with Space Wolves
Hey thanks for letting me know. I have a space wolf sitting on my shelf in my to do list. Watching me. Judging me.
Awesome content mate. I’ve used this for inspiration for my BA army.
Are you Melbourne based?
Hey thanks so much. Yep Melbourne 👍
No worries! For info we have a discord chat where a group of us (most of which are getting back into the hobby) share our work in progress pics and encourage one another. We are painters of all levels with all of us still learning. You’re welcome to join if you’re looking for a place to chill and be encouraged 👍 discord.gg/4Shac4AN
Okay. They ghostly green eyes sold it for me for the grimdark
Awesome! People are divided because they aren’t the classic style of painting lenses but I really like the ghostly green 😀
Thanks so much for the feedback and also for the advice on the other contrast reds 😀
Glad you liked it and let me know if there’s something you’d like to see next 😀
First I didn't know which red I wanted to use for my marines.. Now I got 5 different ways to paint them. Thank you!!! NOT> i confusion what to do
Haha! Sorry about that. Good luck 😀
@Flashing Badger Painting do you use any Vallejo paints at all ?
Yep. I bought a second hand large set of citadel which is why I have so many of them however whites, bone colours, light browns and yellows I’m using almost all Vallejo at the moment. I also like AK interactive bright colours like magenta.
@Flashing Badger Painting hey babe. Do you think nuln oil works same as black wash from vallejo?
Yep for sure 👍 they will be pretty much identical
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but whats the caulk block your using to paint them on? looks helpful whilst painting!
Cheers
This is a great tutorial, thanks!
Thanks so much and no worries, glad it was helpful 😀
Maaaan all these look really good!! but I have to say that GD version is Fire!! Iam actually getting back to blood angels and I am considering adapting this Method! Thanks man and Subbed :)
Amazing! Glad to have you onboard for the journey 😀
You’ll discover on the channel that I’ve started capturing my building and painting in the GD scheme for a whole BA army. So you’ll probably enjoy those videos.
Annnnnnd if you are still hooked, you can even jump into our discord to show off your progress pics and get some extra tips from the amazing painters in there.
what Blues would you recommend if you wanted to recreate the Grim Dark style you used here but for Ultramarines?
Hi. Great video. Just wondering what red ink did you use. Sorry if I missed it in the video?
Hey thanks so much for the feedback. Apologies, turns out I left the name out. It’s Napthol Crimson from Liquitex. Hope that helps.
@@flashingbadgerpainting thank you. Don’t forget to turn these videos into TH-cam shorts if you haven’t already! Really, once again, thank you for the video and the response.
Can you please make one of these videos for Dark Angels :)
Nice! The greens would be fun 😀
This video saved me
And your comment has made my day 😀👍
I prefer zenithal over the other. I also like the green eyes. Do White Scars next.
Thanks! Yeah white scars would be fun to paint up as well
What do you use to hold your mini to that cork? Do you glue it?
I use double sided tape. Cut a few strips, stick them across the surface and they last me months. 👍
I guess i like red lmao. My Necrons are Novokh Dynasty. My melee army for space marines is Blood Angles. My shoot space marines are Exorcist Chapter. My Eldar are.....Red lol oh. my Tyrand's are blue...yeah.
Haha well let’s get to work on repainting the Tyranids to red amiright? 🤣
Sooooo... blue huh... didn't think they deserved red lol I get it lol blue is a very nice choice.. I use blue on my dark eldar kabal with bright green highlights and weathering oh and of course blood for the blood God... but I mainly play and paint ork deathskulls..I guess I like blue 😆
Which liquitex red ink is it? Napthol or pyrole?
Thank you for the video!
Naphthol Crimson 🙂 sorry I should have included that!
Definitely building a whole BA force for sure. I bought the BA combat patrol to start with. Love the video, mate, and I can't wait to get started.
Amazing!
You may have spotted them already but I have a small ongoing series on the channel where I paint a blood angels army as well. I’m a couple of squads in. So you can join me on the ride. Spoiler alert, new BA video this weekend 👀

I cant wait to strip my army and paint them like #5
I can’t wait to see them!
Oh cool. That sounds ace, I want to see how it looks. Do you have pics on Instagram I can check out?
What unit are these models?
Im starting my blood angels and going to do the Grim Dark scheme! I’ve also ordered vampire heads online so some models that don’t wear helmets will be vampiric with pale grey skin :)
Great idea! These models are the Primaris Intercessors which are a all rounder troop choice.
I’ve also put another video up where I paint and entire squad of jet pack Inceptors in the Grim Dark style which you may enjoy 😀
Best of luck and I’m looking forward to seeing how you go with yours.
Enjoy painting and gaming with him, I look forward to hearing how you go with it or you can send me pics of them on Instagram 👍
liquitecks red ink , is that readily available at spotlight im seeing it come up online on ?
I’ve purchased them from my local hobby store or otherwise from Amazon/ebay.
What color do you recommend for painting night lords in the grimm dark style, a dont know if brown is the right base color for them
I think brown would still be a great base for them. I've found that what works for red also works well for blue. So dark brown into dark blue into medium into light. If it were me i'd lean into those dark turquoise blues like Incubi Darkness or Stegadon blue for the first dark colour.
@@flashingbadgerpainting thank you i will try your advice with my guys when they arrive
This maybe a lil nitpicking but the shoulder pads should be switched. Chapter shoulder marker is left shoulder while the right one shows company shoulder marker
What a pick up. I’ve just finished a squad of marines and slid across the house in my socks to see what side I put the chapter symbol on.
*phew*
Nailed it.
The zenithal model (3rd one) how did you panel line the model?
Hey, just with black paint slightly thinned down and a sharp brush. Took my time and wiped away any mistakes. You could also use the technique where you lightly gloss the model and use a specific panel line ink but I prefer the other way 👍
Great job ! Could be cool to see a Grimdark Salamander, because the are no good video on it on internet, most of the time the looks like dark angels or are not either grim or dark sadly :s
Thanks 😀
Great, now I want to paint salamanders 🤣
@@flashingbadgerpainting haha you're welcome 😁!
Paint sime space wolves in the grim dark style you painted the blood angle in
Cool idea!
what contrast colours for blue/yellow helmets?
Hey, I didn’t dabble in blue or yellow helmets for mine so I’m not sure. There’s a great opaque yellow contrast but I can’t remember the name 😬
how % of mix between rhino and mephiston red at 20:39 ? thank you in advance
Hey! This was a 50/50 🙂
Love it! PS: saw the airbrush painting dude not wearing a mask? Is that safe? That mask is what puts me off doing airbrush
Thanks mate! Yep these are safe acrylic paints. But if you are spraying harmful paints, cleaners etc then yep grab yourself a mask 👍
@@flashingbadgerpainting thanks!
Can you share what songs you used here? Thanks!
Hey I’m away from my PC this week but they are all songs from Artlist if that helps
@@flashingbadgerpainting Thank you so much!
what red ink was used?
Napthol Crimson from Liquitex 👍
Yaya I’m a blood angel lol
Nice! They were my army as a kid and now I’m tempted to start collecting them again.
@@flashingbadgerpainting yeah I started at age 29 actually I’m relatively new in 2019 when I started collecting I’m addicted so welcome home brother
🤘
Dark style is be far the best
It was my favourite as well. So much so that I have ended up starting a Blood Angels army in this style. If you’re keen to see more it, there are small series up on the channel where I select and paint different units
Okay update. I may have made a mistake. I painted my model in wynona ryder bread :( how to fix
Bahaha 🤣 you’ve made my day
How can i paint as flat as your's? My painting's always rough.
I'm following the first way you've showed in this video.
Hey! My advice would be ;
- give the contrast paints a good shake first
- use of of their primers like Wraithbone
- unlike their other paints, don’t be afraid to load your brush up and put these on thicker
- once it’s in place, they dry quickly so don’t move them around with your brush or the paint will tear.
Try that and let me know how you go 👍

Don't buy branded thinner, it's only Isopropyl Alcohol. Much better value.
Thanks for the tip
@@flashingbadgerpainting hell yeah, I dig that too!
First
Thanks!
Add chapters!!😜😜😜
For me it has chapters and they are working 🤔
they are backpack how else to they carry homework aka purity seals home that fall off HAAHAHHAH
Backpacks with tactical lunchboxes. This is what has become of the imperium.
You seriously not even going to add the fundamentals of adding a water 50/50 and adding layers
👀 Style 2 and 4 both feature layering and each of these steps use either water or thinner rather than straight paint. I discuss that a couple of times but the video is already nearing 30mins long so I need to find ways to keep it moving.
mephisten red is an horrible color... the paint is terribly chalky and muted, theres no vibrancy in their new colors or depth
Khorne red is my favourite. Now there’s a red you can set your watch to.
@@flashingbadgerpainting I'm glad you agree, I only wish they brought Red Ink back... I miss my old colors. Army painter Dragon Red base, black twist top Blood red and stinky pop-top Red Ink. There is no finer finish.
Blood angels eyes are green
It’s literally in the codex
Yep, I painted a couple green and some in different colours to mix it up in case someone wanted to branch out from the norm. 🙂
@@flashingbadgerpainting oh my bad I’m very codex compliant so I see blue eyed and I cringe i would do ultramarine the same as codex too tho hahaha
The last one i think yall call it grim dark looks amazing great job brother 💯🫡. New to Wh so waiting for my first couple troops to start painting an hopefully get into the game itself. Look forward to seeing your other vids
