  • This video covers the repair of an XBOX One games console with an issue where it powers on then off after around 1-2 seconds, otherwise known as the Light of Death.
    In this instance it was caused by a blown N-Channel MOSFET, faulty power regulation circuitry (U9D4) and associated surface mount components.
    In this video we cover the diagnosis of the faulty components, their replacement and final testing of the console post-repair.
    Associated Materials:
    ==================
    Toshiba TPN8R903NL Power MOSFET (N-ch single VDSS ≤ 30V) Datasheet:
    toshiba.semicon-storage.com/i...
    XBOX One Standby Voltages Diagram:
    drive.google.com/file/d/1Ayb5...
    Thanks for watching and please remember to comment, rate and subscribe! If this video proves useful then if you can let the beginning / end ad(s) play through then that would be very much appreciated - it all helps go towards what I do here on this channel and keeps my content free to all.
    Many thanks,
    Andy.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's a One S I'd assume it should still be within it's initial warranty? Get it sent into MS if so don't be tempted to go alone when you don't have to. If it's not however then the only way to tell would be to open it and inspect for any obvious damage i.e. burned components and try a good PSU if all else fails to see if that cures its ails. You're rather limited unfortunately without schematics for this kind of problem when nothing obvious is to be found.

    Great Job Andy but just remember when your measuring the resistor or the capacitor inline one or the other could be fine as they are both on the same trace you would need to pull each component of separately to correct test them :) but the other resistor in front of fet defiantly made sense that it was short that probably caused the fet to blow PS did you manage to find those ps4 parts for me ? Hey Andrew, this video was really helpful in helping me troubleshoot, even though I found out the issue was completely unrelated. I'm wondering if you can give me some advice:
    My XBONE has the prepetual orange light no matter the power supply, so I took it apart to troubleshoot. I plugged it in without the whole thing put back together, and it fired right up. As soon as I plugged the WiFi card in, the Xbox died. I can run the Xbox without the WiFi card, but then I don't have wireless controller capability.
    I'm not saavy with electronics, and am wondering how I can test if this is an issue with the WiFi card, or an issue with the circuit board. Any input before I buy a WiFi card that may not work?

    Hi Andy, loved the video. I have an xbox that wont turn on anymore. I plugged another power brick to it and the light stays orange. there is no sound or light when touching the (X) button. I pulled my xbox apart since it's out of warranty and looked at the board. there are no visible signs of anything blown like in your video. I will be using your voltage diagram to check everything. Two questions: Is there a power LED on the board somewhere that lights up showing that i'm getting power? And in order to test the board (out of the case) do i need to have all parts connected before it will work? (I.E. -- fan/disk drive/Hard Drive/WiFi board, etc...) thanks.

A good bit of detective work is what I should have said and I hope you show others with varying faults so as to give us 'computer butchers' a heads up. lol. Not really a computer butcher, but any fault finding or the steps of how you found your particular fault always comes in useful. Have to ask, is there a schematic for the xbox one as yet available.?

    trying to diagnoise a xbox one with the same issue. now i followed the troubleshooting steps and got exactly the same readings on each phase. now whats the bigger looking mosftet? to the left on each phase? Now my suspicions are because when testing resistance out of the 4 phases (revised board). The bottom 3 pins closest to the left give me a reading of 0.104v. The fourth pin furthest to the right gives 1.570v. The other 3 phases on the same pins of what I "think" are mosfets are 0 apart the fourth pin closest to the right which are also 1.570v. Am I right in saying they're mosfets or something esle? and my readings correct? Thank you. Its 4:50am and I feel I've learnt alot from you as per usual! thank you

    • @AndrewPaul

      The fet has a large ground pad underneath. It draws heat out of the smaller tips too quickly for them to effectively rework the solder already on the pads hence the larger tip.

    I'm having a similar problem with an Xbox one S model. I found that the fet on one of the phases was shorted open and replaced it. Now, instead of the board being completely dead, I get the startup chime, then it goes dead again. I have tested all 3 phases and the one closest to the power plugin area reads .637 and then I turn the leads around and it reads 1.937 when testing the leg of the fet to the resistor, whereas the other 2 phases read .637 and 1.967. All other electrical components that I've tested look and read normal, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what could be wrong. Any advice or can you point me to a forum where discussions like this take place?

      Andrew Paul - Hi Andrew, our xbox was overheating so my husband took it apart to clean it and replaced the thermal compound paste. The xbox one x now doesn’t want to turn on. It just beeps, light flashes white and turns straight off. Looking at the motherboard it seems like my husband has snapped off a couple of the resistors whilst taking off the heat sync clamp. This is the only thing we can think that’s happened as looking at the board they look missing/flat like they should be there but not sure if the board is supposed to be like this and something else may be the matter? Do you have any advice on how we could repair this problem we are experiencing please. We rang xbox support to send it to them for repair and they want £240, which we wont be doing. If you could advise us how to go about getting this xbox one x up and running again that’d be greatly appreciated thanks 😊

    Tell me andrew mine has orange light. When i push the switch on, i hear a beat sound from the speaker, the power supply light turns from Orange to GREEN and then the xbox one don't start, the front light of thre xbox one does not even has time to light. So from orange to green on power supply, very very quick green, a beap sound, no front light and does not turn on, There was a mosfet burn. I did replace it from eBay. I took the four first numbers on the mosfet and i did order it. I did put it in and same thing and the new mosfet was burned again, short with yhe little resistor at his up right(Gate short). What do tou think. All the capacitors near the mosfet, the big ones between the mosfet and the APU measure 7 or 8 ohms between them exept the 2 or 3 last ones measure like 98 ohm and all the little capacitors over the APU measure 7 ohm, all of them, almost. I had a short everywhere, i took the mosfet off, the short is gone exept all the big capacitors between coils and APU still measure the same 7,8 ohm. They are written 2.5 volts just to help you know which capacitors i'm talking about exept the 3 last ones of the last phase. What do you think? Thank you. regards. Serge.

      To be honest the best thing you can do is buy the equipment, read and watch from other tech's and finally practice, practice, practice! hey Andy I have no idea how to do any of this kind of stuff and I have it any professional advice for what i should do

  • @dazecm
    @dazecm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great stuff Andy. I'm starting on repairs on Xbox One and PS4 at my job but the soldering room appears somewhat ill-equipped. Inadequate ventilation with no clean air source and no extraction of air cleaned of flux fumes to the outside, just some crappy false-ceiling vents that seemingly just throw air up into the void above. Then there's poor lighting, no microscope and the SMD reflow tool of apparent choice being an Evolution HD200 hot air gun, which was a WTF! moment when I saw it. The HD200, as far as I'm able to tell, is purely for plumbers and decorators for strip cleaning stuff, not SMD work :o
    Need to educate my employer on decent equipment to get in for the type of SMD work you show here. What bench magnifier do you recommend? We'll need good workspace clearance from lens to the item under work. I was thinking of an Amscope SE400?

    • @dazecm
      @dazecm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What pin pitch levels are we talking about for the components you deal with in this video. What is the pin pitch for the HDMI sockets too? We have many jobs coming in with HDMI port damage.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holy s***! Your employer definitely needs some education on equipment!! You can't do any type of this work with any reliability using anything like that. First thing is to get that ventilation sorted - if it's a poorly ventilated space that makes quality extraction equipment even more necessary. I can only presume you're US based mate because of that was over here or in mainland Europe he'd be in serious breaches of H&S law. You only get one pair of lungs after all!
      The Amscope SE-400 would make a fine choice for a bench scope. It offers a good degree of magnification and a good 9" of working height. I also use an Amscope (SM4-TPZ-FRL) - mine came with a 3MP camera but I'm upgrading this to a full 1080p HDMI camera - just waiting for it to get in as I've had to order it from overseas.

      UK based. Amazingly. Just done an employee survey and I spent most of my time in the 'Strongly Disagree' column when answering questions surrounding quality of training, safety and other opinions of the workplace.
      Had a meeting recently where I said the attention to health & safety is half-hearted at best, despite freely available documents available on the UK HSE website. Had to inform them that they should look up safety in the Welding section of the website because soldering is considered an 'allied process' in that category.
      We're a brown goods service centre repairing TVs, audio laptop and consoles. I was amazed that the company training material covers manual handling via an online test, as well as one-to-one role-play tests on how to pick up a box, yet they do not apply the same attention to safety in the soldering room where we have an IR reflow machine and other hot devices. There's been no COSHH risk assessments for the soldering room or the dust-cleaning area where we deal with laptop and console dust blockages. I've let them know I'm not happy doing any more work in these areas until we get some rational thought put into safety and get the workshop properly equipped :)

    I have an Xbox one original same to yours. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find a single thing that looks bad. Used a thermal camera and only a few things light up. APU. Little bit of the chipset and the mosfets on the side (all normal apart from APU is hot in one corner. Not sure if that’s meant be like that?) my Xbox one is going white amber white amber (3 times as you said) and nothing else. Could this still be a chipset issue?

      You'd need to change NAND flash / APU / BD-ROM logic board and Ethernet Controller IC at a minimum. Seriously not worth the hassle.

    Hi - anybody know whether I could power an Xbox 1st gen directly from a solar battery bank or would I need some form of regulation? The solar bank's voltage ranges from 14.4 at bulk charging down to the battery voltage at night. Any thoughts? If so what kind of regulator would be best? Atx, buck/boost?

    My Gtx 980M is shutting my laptop down instantly when it's usage goes over 90% for an extended period because that's when it's voltage fluctuates. Somebody said the MOSFETS are failing because the temps are fine and the GPU is not scorched anywhere. I don't have the tools to test of fix it yet but I'm wondering how much this might cost in labor.

Tried all the reset methods and still nothing. Nothing looks burnt like in your video. Also tried another power brick and same problem. Power brick is Orange when plugged into it. Then when I plug it in it does turn white. So power bricks are good. So I have know idea what's wrong. Any help?

      If it maintains power but the screen is black, try and boot it to the Troubleshooter menu. If it fails, it's likely your hard disk has died.
