    This video shows the repair of an XBOX One S console which has no power. It does have a good, working power supply (PSU) so what gives? Here we check the board over, find a 12v rail short and then go ahead to examine the components in the APU power supply circuit where we find an issue which is stopping our console from powering up.
    The replacement MOSFETs required are Toshiba TPN8R903NL,LQ.

    There was a huge lightning storm yesterday and one bolt struck so loud and bright and ONLY my Xbox One S died. I have a TV, PS2, Modem, cable box, and Xbox One S on the same multi plug-in wall connector. The voltage is going through the cord but how do I test my internal power supply? And why do you think out of all things my Xbox was the only one that took the damage??

    Hey there,
    Thanks for your informative video on how fix the MOSFETs on Xbox One S.
    I am having the issue where my Xbox One S Starts with a Chime and within a second Goes off with chime.
    I tried to investigate the problem and check for faulty devices such as Hard drive, Fan, Disc Drive, or even the Thermal Paste.
    Nothing was wrong, I even changed the thermal paste on the CPU.
    Funny thing is that, my Xbox One S will start and work as if nothing is wrong after every 4 days.
    I know it's the MOSFETs which causing this issue, not checked the readings yet.
    But want to know, why after 4 days my Xbox will start and i can play games upto how many hours I want, I played for straight 12 hrs, switched it off.
    Tried to swtich if on immediately, stuck in the on / off loop again .
    Please advice.

    Is there a way to test the internal power supply without taking it apart? When I plug in the power cable there is a click (spark) but I cannot see any fan movement. Would the console still charge a usb device if it had a defective part other than the power supply... Do you know what the voltage should read if I remove the power supply, plug it into the mains and use a multimeter

    • @gmaninthusa
      @gmaninthusa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      power supply should give 12V. If there's a short on the APU power rail, it will likely trip the overcurrent protection on the PSU and cause it to shut down. As for the click sound, I'm guessing that would be the overcurrent protection kicking in. Mine did the same thing until replacing the faulty power rail mosfet on my One S board.

    • @bobapthorpe
      @bobapthorpe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It can be difficult to trace circuits just by following the traces on the board; what helps me is understanding a bit about the high-level function blocks of a circuit or board (power, video, radios, controllers, CPU/memory) and the parts that you find in each. The easy (unhelpful) answer is experience, which is true but doesn't help someone starting out. Every subsystem needs power and there's a definite order in which the subsystems get power and start up (e.g. video & wifi will come up after the CPU). You get clues by the overall system behavior (does the fan spin? do you get lights on the board?) which helps isolate the high-level functions which aren't working so you check them and their dependencies. Hopefully this lets you isolate the possible failures to a few sections of the board and you can do a visual inspection for burnt/abused components before you start probing pins. Look for obvious problems; what's obvious to you will come with experience but everyone starts at the beginning and there's no substitute for getting your hands dirty :)
      There's a lot of detail to take in but that's why I watch people like Andrew & Louis Rossman. It's partly to pick up on their experience with specific hardware but mostly to understand the logic they use when diagnosing problems.

    I have a quick question. I have an Xbox S with no power. There was a short I found and the Mosfet was bad. I replaced it and I can turn the console on, with a white light but it shuts off in about 1 second. I checked the power supply and it reads 12 volts. Does anyone have any ideas for places to check on the motherboard? Thanks a lot!

  • @neildmd

    Excellent video! I narrowed down my no power issue thanks to this. I have a board with a blown IC labeled Q9E1 just to the left of the MOSFET that you replaced (6:40). I'm guessing it's a 12V regulator or some other FET? I also get a short across the MOSFET gate so I'll be replacing that as well. Do you think it would be worth while replacing the PWM controller while I've got it on the operating table or would I be pushing my luck going after all 3 at once? I've replaced plenty of chips that size and smaller, my hands are pretty steady, but I know some are prone to pads lifting more so than others. Easy on the heat I guess... haha

    I had the exact component fail, the Q9D4. I replaced the mosfet and sure enough, the fan twitched and the console booted. But after using the xbox for like 30 mins, it shutoff all of a sudden and upon inspection, I found that the Q9D4 mosfet failed. I tested it when I installed and there was no short on the board and after it failed, there is. I replaced it again with a good mosfet and the short in the power supply pins between 12v and gnd is gone. But I get continuity between V_CPUCORE and GND and V_GFXCORE and GND. Interesting to note that there is no short between GND and V_12V just above the power connector. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

    I have been sitting with this issue for months and I just can't seem to find the issue, I tried asking other youtubers about this, but unfortunately no reply from anyone. So if you could help me I would really appreciate it...

    I am testing the same thing on a regular xbox one motherboard, all the mosfets are apparently okay, but when I test voltage the mosfets are only receiving/outputting 0.2V!
    Any clues what the problem might be?

    Hi Paul I’ve checked all mosfets, capacitors, resistors, power supply, and hard drive on the board but it still won’t turn on I had it working 24 hours earlier when I refitted a capacitor that had come off I had it working for 3 hours now it won’t come back on please help

    do you still reply? I have original xbox since dec. 2015. never a problem. left the house one day come back and it won't turn on. it makes an audible noise like it's trying to turn on but cuts short. eerily similar to a car trying to turn over but won't. orange light constant on power supply, never had water or any kind of damage.

    I had a 12v short on my Xbox and found the MOSFET Q9e2 was bad thanks to your video but after changing it the unit does beep and turn on now but no white led or fan spin. Any ideas?

  • @WadeMcLure

    So the left 3 contacts on mine do not beep and read about 1.19 on the meter, the right 3 beep then count down to 0.00... This is already beyond my expertise, so I suppose I need to make a decision on selling for parts or trying to fix... LOL

    So when I test with black probe on gate and red on resistor the center mosfet reads zero the outside 2 are good, but when I flip leads with red on gate I get no readings across all the mosfet. Should the center mosfet still be the culprit?

    Mine has an issue where it has power, will boot but no fan and shuts off after about 5 seconds.Plus I just realized this won't work for me being I have apparently a newer model that only has two blue caps, not as many as shown here.Bummer

    Question all three of my mosfets were reading bad had no power problem. Checked everything like you did had a short to ground in the power supply plug on the motherboard changed all mosfets and now reads right and no short to ground anymore when I plug my power cord into the power supply the fan turns now but still won't power on whay to check next?

    Hey all. New to this. But this video was great for me as well. The one thing I am looking for is parts to replace on the board and what is the best route to go. My daughter's cat figure the Xbox one s all digital edition was better then a litter box and of course that went over good. I'm not sure how to post a picture on here and would love any advice anyone can give me.

    I have an issue with my Xbox one where I have no power on the faceplate but the fan is pulsing, when testing I find that there is a vintage on the fan supply that pulses in time with the fan. But I’m stuck on what components to check? Could this be a short?

    Mine will power on for up to 5 mins after I replaced the PSU but usually it just powers straight off. Hoping this is the issue and not something worse.

    My gates measure black on gate to red on resistor 625 but if i flip it around it doesnt show anything i am useing a cheap hypertough ohmmeter on diode mode is this shorted cause it reads 625 on black on gate to red on resistor but it doesnt show anything the other way? Do i need to save for a better ohm meter??
