that autopilot ram needs a front to back pivot on the seat side too....not just a pivot on tiller. Its twisting instead of flexing. prolly why its soo hot

I did a video here on TH-cam showing how to disassemble and lubricate Harken winches. Lewmar is likely very similar. The way it seized up made me think one of your pawls was stuck. The mechanism uses two different kinds of lubricant depending on the gear involved. Happy sailing, stay safe!

I've built and currently testing my own auto tiller for my 23ft sailboat in Scotland using a linear actuator not dissimilar to the one you are using and Arduino to run the control code, a 3 - pitch digital compass I.C and H-bridge to drive the motor. Don't understand why there aren't more on the market given the extortionate prices and the high failure rate of the current commercial products . Good luck with yours and more importantly, have a safe trip.

Saw another guy using the Pelagic tiller pilot. He had two, one port, one starboard. One was bigger than the other. He had each covered with a custom fit Sunbrella cover to keep out the elements. Easy project for your Sailrite Fabricator.😊
You should consider putting a Zero or Barita system on board which is simply a pitcher with a filter. I like to Zero better as it gets to 0 TDS so marina water - no problem! You get extra filters as they last about six months and the Zero system also when it slows down you just squeeze the filter and it burps air bubble and starts flowing again.
try shifting the black box on the Pelagic around - that is the electronic compass and it has an inertial sensor too. I also played with the distance control arm to axis of rudder. On my boat Laser 28 it is a very fast boat with light & fast spade rudder.
The fact that in Sagres the green boyes are on the starboard side when you enter port is because Europe and Afrika use the IALA A system, while the USA and south Amerika use the IALA B system where the green is on port side when you enter harbor.
Sam, Autopilot electro-mechanical buttons and dials you desire will corrode at the pricepoint you paid so the membrane touchpad is used. You'll pay 3x or more for the AP button functionality and quality u desire.
Im sure you know but... Make sure you use a waterproof lube / marine grease on the winch. Use wd for cleaning only and remove it... light grease /oil on the bearings... wd is great but doesn't last long as its quite thin...
Attaching the autopilot close to the hinge of the tiller will increase the forces, noise and heat and I’m not sure insulating it would be a great move either for heat dissipation reasons even with venting… I think most of the problems of the autopilot comes from them turning rotational motion into linear via a rack and pinion type set up. I would’ve thought there’d be one with a pulley type set up like the more integrated ones in the engine bay of other ships I’ve seen but in a bolt on above deck style

The worst thing you can do to a bearing is spray it with WD-40. That stuff is a degreaser. It’s not a lubricant.
Graphite spray. WD catches dust and dirt.
WD40 evaporates. A silicone spray would work - regular squirts!
They make marine grease for winches. You want that to resist the salt.
The WD in WD40 stands for water displacement, it is not a lubricant.
It's a solvent
