Sam is the man! Probably one of the best TH-cam sailing videos I have seen. Other TH-cam sailors show you a flat sea and tell you how rough it is, but “the camera doesn’t show it”. When Sam is in the shit, he is in the shit and you can see it on the video. Glad you and Pickel arrived safely - enjoy your winter break.
@@fredskinner1233its only about 3 meters no whitecaps to speak of, no flying spume, its nothing, just not enough sea room to sleep without concern while hove to. That guy should get himself a Monsun or Nic32.
The only reason I didn't panic watching this video is the fact Sam posted it meaning he made it. These are the moments when your boat maintenance is put to the test. It would be great if Sam gave a review of what he did right and what he did wrong.
We sometime forget Sam is in a small boat with all the increased dangers, boats half as long like most other sailors use are actually almost 4 times the tonnage ( cube by volume). Most intense I have seen on YT, All this with a smile. Go Sam,go !!! THUMB UP EVERTBODY.
Sam, I rarely comment on videos. I have to comment on this video, because I have watched most all of your videos. This video captured me like your first video solo sailing to Hawaii. You managed to capture your emotions, and the SEA STATE. This was the first video where I could appreciate the sea state. The waves looked crazy! I’m bummed that your suffering came across so clearly, and that this is what made this video so amazing. In this video, you somehow made me feel like I was feeling your pain. Glad you made it through the gates. Love your work Sam…
Watched this twice now as it's some really great footage in high frequency waves, near shore, wind shifting off the waves. Well done, Sam! Thank you for sharing it all with us. I have to caution you on the harness system as it appears yours will allow you to fully be overboard. Folks who have tested getting back aboard a moving boat even in calm conditions have concluded that they should clip onto tight centerline straps so that they can't fall completely overboard. Venice is a very cool place to be wintering Pickel. Look forward to your continued travels.
Wow. That was wild! What a way to end the season! The footage using the 360 of your hoisting the main and from the cabin of you attempting to come about/gybe was some of the best over the years. Great video, great seamanship, great season. Thanks, Sam. I look forward to more adventures!
'Art stuff' , you peasant Sam ;-) One of your best videos by a nautical mile. Extremely cool calm , and collected in challenging circumstances. Fantastic ,.and put some of these alleged 'superstar' sailors to shame. I wish you and P/Herring a great break. Thank you.
I have boated tens of thousands of miles in trawlers, Sportfish boats and center consoles and my hat is off to you as your skill is incredible and your calmness is to be admired!
Can you please buy an AIS transponder :). I'm a big fan and don't want you to get run over by some cargo vessel. The amount of peace of mind that it brings is priceless! knowing that other ships can see you on their sceens.. Stay safe man.
also, when approaching a lock or smth, they'll often just wait for you without you even asking. Way less getting cursed at in busy channels etc.. I highly recommend AIS. (especially when sailing solo.)
That was the best sailing video from the perspective of a single-handler in a small boat that I've ever seen. You really show what it's like to be alone on a small boat in a storm. Reminds me of what it was like being in the North Pacific on a 27ft Vega. Great finale to your cruise. Bravo!
Excellent portrayal of the Alfred Hitchcock moment when a big ship changes course so as to collide with your small boat at night in rough weather - disbelief - slight panic - course correction - waiting in fear - confirming it is okay - wondering why that happened - relief. Thanks much.
Geez Sam, you da man! Getting the main up in winds and seas like that without snagging the lazy jacks is not something I would even think about trying.
Speechless, Sam!!👍👍 Easily the best sailing video of the year, bar none… Very few solo sailors document those kind of sailing conditions as they are just in survival mode….Kudos and thanks for the inspiration!!👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
That video had the highs, lows, and intensity that was becalmed by the beautiful Venice. Impactful episode, I’ve watched them all and this might be my new favorite. Good job Sam
The mighty Pickle does it again! Great job sailing a rough passage Sam, it was awesome to be right there with you through it. Have a great winter recharging and refitting, can't wait to see your next adventure.
Damn Sam! That Venice passage was crazy! Really had us nervous. We love it when the rails are dipping, just not in cold 12' seas! Good on ya mate! Here's a beer on me. Thanks for the adventures. Scott
That was pretty wild, but you handled it well. I’m a new sailor and I’ve learned a lot from watching you sail. Enjoy the time on land. Thanks for the great videos.
Wow! Best sail yet. Jumping around on the fore deck in those waves and wind..... dicey ..... glad you made it safe. At night to boot! Best video yet. Glad the rigging and auto steer held up. Been there when the waves and wind make it difficult if not possible to tack with limited rudder authority vs. forces on the boat. Waves were epic! Pickel took a beating.... a full safety check is recommended. ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
Brilliant video, had me rooted to my chair !! It looked like the med didn't want to let you go, you certainly finished the season in style. Look forward to your return.
All right Sam, good job. We usually see you cruzin in great conditions. I appreciate your character Evan more now that I see you hold an Evan keeled demeanor in challenging conditions! A true seasoned sailer. People like yourself make the world a better place . And a big thanks to Isac, for taking good care of you. Feeling the love
Whoa. What a dramatic way to end the season. Cool under pressure as always. Beautiful relaxing Venice scenes are a great palate cleanser to the crazy sailing conditions.
Great end of the season video. Probably not so great for you at the time but what the hell, Pickled Herring is resting comfortably now, awaiting next seasons' travels. I've been following you since you went to Hawaii. This, to me, is the best voyaging channel available. Keep up the good work. Fair winds!
When I saw your solo to Hawaii video so many years ago, I thought there is something special about this young man, Your skill and calm has gotten you through a lot. I was mesmerized by this video. Way to get through a very tough situation yet remain your Sam self. Thanks for sharing and capturing this.
Great stuff sir! As a 74 year old hippie I have heard “I am really bummed..” many times even before it became common usage but I am struggling to remember a time when I heard it from someone with such a big grin on their face! Having done some sketchy sailing on San Francisco Bay I can relate somewhat to what you’re doing but never single handed…real adventure!!!
Is so easy to get exhausted in this. You can hear the howling wind in the rigging.sam shows how difficult it can be in that chop to just tack. Way to hang in there Sam!
Man I was holding my breath in my living room recliner lol. You got some brass ones, that's for sure. Best Video award for sure. Thanks, and happy you arrived safe and sound. Have a wonderfull time away from ol' pickle.
first time I've seen you not smiling for a minute. Trying to make that tack. There is not a worse moment in sailing when the boat won't respond to the helm. Best video of real sailing I've seen. Great walk thru Venice to conclude. Thanks.
Sam you are a get it done type of guy who would be that person who would get it done when needed ... A leader and very capable ... Capt. Q ( now retired ) said you were one of the best solo sailors and in a modest sailboat considered small ... you are one of the Best .... ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊 ....
Hi Sam, great video, always so calm in all situations. I am writing this from Hobart, Tasmania, the most southern state of Australia. We are in the roaring 40’s and often have conditions like that. Pickle seemed to handle it no problem Cheers Alistair McRae
I just want to say a couple of things first off I love watching your videos and they have been an inspiration. After quite a while of saving up I finally have the means to go and buy my own boat which I'll be doing so in the next couple of weeks . I just want to say thank you again for putting out all of your content I thoroughly enjoy watching it and I cannot wait to get out there to see what it's like for myself
I can't believe how calm you are! I wouldn't be but what can you do? Can you imagine how many sailors have gone to the bottom there? You'll love Venice❤
It looked like at one stage you were balancing your sail’s area with Pickle’s sail bag which appeared to have the same ‘cross sectional area’ as your Jib ! Brave man, good perseverance!
yup as a 50 year sailor, I was seemingly more nervous than you appeared to be! That sail was as rough as any I've seen and dealt with. Excellent job; cool calm and collected!
Sam I love your modesty and your not so perfect of a modest boat as well! A bit of rust here and there yep that's a well used machine for sure. What a life and a true sailor that at first is not recognized but spend a bit of time here and one finds out very differently.

This bad weather is more of an annoyance than a scary condition.
To you… not me.
Question: you seem to spend. More time on the sheets than on tiller. Do you steer by tiller or by sail trim?

White knuckle sailing! Best sailing channel on TH-cam!!

Good filming in crazy conditions. Good to see you using a harness and tether.
Holy CRAP Sam! A real Lt. Dan scream at the sea moment!
I absolutely love your stoic attitude during some of the roughest conditions i have seen you in. Get it 💪 Sam!!!
I got anxiety seeing that boat tilt so much !! And then that comment !! "Hope my mast doesn't come off " !!!! Broo !!!
Pickle is one hell of a boat...and you're one hell of a sailor.
My dog was hassling me for her dinner. I said not yet, I’m waiting for Sam to tac. It was a nail biter. 🤣🌻
Amazingly modest man showing tremulous seamanship...all credit to you Sam.
