- I repaired the cylinder in this Chainsaw by lightly sanding the walls with first a 220 grit emery paper then a 400 grit emery paper. Visit my channel for more repair videos; th-cam.com/users/donyboy73...

Thanks for the vid. I repaired a husky 51 using your same method of sanding and using a chinese piston. My saw was a garage sale find for ten dollars. I used a dental engine for removing bits of piston from the scratches in the cylinder. My only surprise was the difficulty of using the chinese wrist pin clips--very difficult to place. I had to modify (bend) them to enable placement. But the saw runs a treat now. Very strong runner. Repair cost was only $25 US. for the ebay piston
This worked on my 154 too. Thanks
Great job on that cylinder Donyboy! If you ever need an extra mechanic, give me a call,I'm your man.
Great fix I have that same saw but I need the top cover shroud for mine and can't seem to find one
@32sbeaulieu i would only use the acid if there was rust, not necessary though. u can spray penetrating oil to make it easier to sand
@Smleng201 usually when they surge like that the carb is dirty, u should clean it and replace any diaphragms in the carb if there are any.
@spelunkerd thats called a cylinder honing tool, its used for deeper grooves and scratches in the cylinder, and i havent seen one small enough for a chainsaw engine
@docdavidb good fix!
good video, runs good now
my scooter ran bit lean one time and made scratches on the exhaust side so i honed it a bit then used 400 grit sandpaper to smooth it out and its been over 5 tanks so far (1.5L) and it still has above 120PSI compression, i also sanded the piston a bit.
Am si eu una,153-83 fabricatie,zunt bune vechiturild❤😂
@spelunkerd i did't want to expand the cylinder anymore than i had to so by hand was the best way
@jjlwis actually i realized the chain was dull
Good video
First off, great videos! I have zero small engine experience and I find your videos very well spoken and highly informative. Now, I'll be making this same fix by sanding the cylinder. I've read elsewhere to use muriatic acid (very carefully!) to remove any material left on the cylinder from the piston. Have you tried this and is it really necessary?
@tribulation138 vid of the psi coming soon
Looks like you sanded this by hand. What do you think about those 3-armed sanding hones that fit on a drill, made for cylinders? They seem unnecessary, if you can do this by hand....
Hey .. Great vid ! Donyboy, Just what I needed to see. I noticed the initial pulls were jerky. WHY ? Do a lot of chainsaw have that initial jerky pull ? Really need to know. Thx you !
heavy compression
@donyboy73 after the break-in ? of the piston and ring. They need that also but not that much as a New cylinder
Husqvarna 254.I have a cylinder kolbenschmidth 073/3A+ from the 80s, what piston should I put?Mahle or Meteor piston?HELP.
Just make sure to tell the customer in the quote or invoice that the cylinder has been reused & there's no guarantee that the repair will be successful.
With power tools, we'd always have to get the customer to sign a legally binding document when doing such work that they agree if the repair is unsuccessful that there is no warranty on the repair, meaning if they took the matter to court they cannot fight it because it was a mutual agreement that if the repair failed, there would be no warranty or refund on the repair !!!!
I know I sanded out my dads old Ryobi line trimmers cylinder when my brother used sump oil in the fuel, the very fine wear particles from the cars engine actually caused the engine to lock up but I could dismantle it & sand it out then reuse the line trimmer.
Just never mix old sump oil into fuel to use with a 2 stroke engine !!!!
was that a normal speed for cutting that log? or is the chain just really worn out?
whats the psi?
nice work. i have a cylinder hone i think i will give a try.
You can do small bores with brake cylinder hones, which are similar. Also unless it's a Sunnen or similar tool and not hand held, it's really a "glaze breaker" but the cylinder doesn't care. Also ball hones are available in many diameters.
Neat.
If you guys have old saws or what not do you have asite; to purchase .them.
@BocephusMaguire you never know what can happen
What about if you really wanna be on a budget and only change the ring, will that help or not as much as doing both new piston and ring?
I’m currently running a Husqvarna 55 like that after it “blew up”. Currently it runs just fine after I cleaned the cylinder and piston, with around 130 psi compression. I even reused the old ring just as an experiment, so if you got a new ring and just cleaned the cylinder and piston im willing to bet you could get some good life out of it, granted the scoring isn’t too bad
Runs ..eh''
