  • Perfect Caribbean sailing to the stunningly beautiful Anegada island, in the north of the British Virgin Islands. Scooter tour around the island and wonderful drone footage of the unspoiled natural environment.
    Following our exploration of Anguilla, we sail 80nm west to the British Virgin Islands and check-in at Virgin Gorda. Our 18nm day-sail up to Anegada was near perfect blue water sailing in the trade winds, arriving to turquoise coral waters. There, we help a charter yacht which was aground, enjoy the delights of the famous Anegada BBQ lobster then tour the island by scooter, visiting every corner. This island has stunning natural beauty both on its shoreline and interior lakes. We take a lot of drone footage, including catching a glimpse of the elusive flock of Pink Flamingos. You can really feel we are enjoying ourselves on this island. It is probably one of our all-time favorite places. We especially enjoyed Anegada Beach Club and, of course, kitesurfing over crystal clear shallow waters of the Atlantic shore.
    8-12 March 2019
    Visited: Neptunes Treasure, Lobster Trap, Anegada Reef Hotel, Flamingo Pond Lookout, Flash of Beauty, Deep Bay, Loblolly Bay, Table Bay, Whispering Pines, Anegada Beach Club, Cow Wreck

    Some friends and I had a truly outstanding sail from BVI to Anegada a couple of years ago....20-25mph wind, 9-10kts boat speed. We were aboard a 45' cat from TMM charters....one of the best places to get a bareboat on Tortuga. Here's a tip....have dinner at the Wonky Dog....one of the best prepared, served and tasty meals at a restaurant I have ever had.....they're truly great at what they do. -Veteran '66-68

      Thanks for the comment Roger. It was the Wonky Dog bar where I held up the giant lobster.... I think. I'd eaten there last time and agree it was VERY good. But wanted to try something different this time. Funny, I think it was a TMM charter cat that I took from Tortola in 2003 - the previous time I was there.

    Great video guys⛵. Charter boats are a group unto themselves and, I find, best given wide birth. On the river here the other dreaded encounter is with a mob🐑🐑🐑 of charter power boats with the most fearsome message 'NO LICENCE REQUIRED' painted along the hull 😱. Stay safe, Ron 🇦🇺

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, don't like to slander them too much because I've been there with them once or twice. And even if you do have experience (which a lot don't) being in charge of a new (different) boat takes a while to get used to. At least as long as the charter lasts. My issue in the BVIs is that I believe the islands are over-doing chart boats. It's crammed.

    Amazing footage as always. Apologies in advance for the long post but strong coffee and there's a lot here!! Love the new graphics and geography. Good fun, with flags and ships! Arrrrsome (sarrrrry not sorry). Really enjoy the sailing only segments, a dedicated 1-hr compilation episode of such w/o narration would be a hit with me and many others in your superfan group! ha. Sunny sailing therapy for these cloudy days.
    Shallow between isles or are those soundings in meters? Just noticed the many line clutches on the mast and what are those black rectangle/oval patches @ 38:36 ? Stood next to an HR53 and was in awe of the girth of the mast, not translated well with wide angle video cameras. It's massive. Also noticed a great shot of the ss spinnaker bowsprit. The HR54 continues to impress me with it's engineering and your attention to detail keeping it tidy. There's just so many older boats that look to be a spaghetti bowl of messy rigging and lines everywhere. Would love to hear you speak to any changes you'd make on the NA and rigging etc. HR has to be a big fan, you must be one of their fav cruisers' channels. Drooling over their new HR50. Thanks for the long vid! *One issue probably out of your control.. a lot of ads. Oh well. Commerce and such buys new parts and cocktails!

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the long comment Dale and your time to write it.
      Yes, the sailing sequences, along with the maintenance always seems to be the hits with viewers. I'm afraid the last 3-4 we posted were greatly lacking those aspects but they were what they were for use to record our memories (main purpose of our editing).
      Yes, our depth is in metres ..... so x by 3.281 for US feet.
      Those oval plates on the mast are simple covers to various inspection holes on the mast. Each there for a reason (to attach the clew of the sail, to adjust the luff extrusion tension etc.).
      The SS bow sprit was once a 50mm (2") prop shaft! Its a bit longer than the official HR model and I had it made quite a bit cheaper than HR .... no surprise.
      Yes, we have a pretty chunky mast section. Infact I think the HR53 is an even bigger section than the 54. Because the 54 has 3 sets of spreaders vs the 53's 2 sets. So I guess the 53 needs a stronger mast. While I like the new designs, the 53 (and its generation) were the last real bullet proof HRs. Its all trending a bit light since then. The 54 (and generation) was the start of the trend. But oh-hum, they need to sell boats and that, they are certainly doing.
      Yes, maybe a video on the "upgrades" and changes we made might be interesting. Also a compilation of pure sail for a full hour. I like the idea. Maybe a summer project for me. But first we need to get up to date with the material we still have to edit and post.
      On the adverts. Yes, sorry about that. You see, when we look at the posts we dont see the ads. But Oana just watched several vids today as a normal viewer would see them and she was a bit shocked by the length and extent of the ads. You Tube is clearly raking in the money! Us, not! We get about $3 per 1000 views. I calculated once. That works out at about 75cents per hour of editing time for the average video with average views!
      There .... that was the long answer!

      I just went and removed a bunch of ads. It was crazy - there were 15 ads there (automatically placed by UT).

    Hi Glen. Good to see Cloudy Bay sailing again. We did Anegeada some years back on a Bareboat Charter. A very special island. Watched your Maine videos as we are planning to sail there this summer. What size is your Genoa and is your new sail the same size? Dennis

      Hi there Dennis! Great to hear from you. Our genoa is 130% and the new one is the same. A really powerful sail, especially just off the wind like we were in this video.

Awesome editing and video EXCEPT, As a lifelong (I am 70, over 55 years on/in the water, Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific, 20 as a licensed Merchant mariner Captain) can your lady handle the boat well enough if you get slapped of the bow by even a small rogue wave yo rescue you, while doing those selfies? • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a small airstrip there, but for the charter boats the island is just a stop over. All charters are taken out of the main island, Tortola.

    total noob questions bc Im new to sailing and really getting into it.
    What model boat and what year is it? it is beautiful and you look like you sail it well.
    Also,
    is the red british flag near the mast the flag you would use to determine which point of sail you are on?
    You look like you were close-hauled for a bit and then became a little more closed-reach?
    Great vids, thank you for the content

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh, there are no stupid questions ... just stupid listeners! Cloudy Bay is a 2008 Hallberg Rassy 54 built in Ellos, Sweden. Length is just under 55ft. weight 30 tons. HR are well know for producing solid Ocean going sailing yachts for several decades now.

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad, the answer is both. But the readout that we show on the video is from the log (speed transducer).

      @@SailCloudyBay what happens when the reducer fails and you have to get a new one how do you keep up with the original mileage if you know what i mean?

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mileage is "kept" inside the navigation computer/plotter. So its never lost unless you get a new nav system. Then, with the new one, its possible to manually program what previous miles were up to.
