It's a reflection of the people you hang out with.
In the geek culture, there's an over-representation of people who obsess over anime, science fiction and fantasy, but a severe under-representation of people who are interested in history.
Which also explains why all the damn swords in geek culture looks like crap.

Pitt was popular, but he was impossible to work with. His career ended pretty much after that on-set behavior. He was recently taken to a mental ward for his violent, bizarre behavior. On the other hand, it would have been interesting to see what wold have become of that character, had Pitt not killed himself off. I would have preferred Darmody as a lead role rather than the Undertaker, Buscemi. How could any woman sleep with THAT?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this show was pretty popular back when it was airing but somehow no one has seen it. Even though i made it to season 3 and didn't finish, i still held the thought of this show being something i enjoyed and should revisit for the last 4-ish years. I know, that's a long time and stranger, still, is the fact that i remembered almost nothing about the show besides the good impression it made so i finally decided to listen to that voice in my head and rewatch it and man, it has 5 seasons! I loved every single second of it and was well worth the hours of binging and the music! I adored the music so much. It was such a beautifully tragic show.

Years ago (prolly 2013) I accidentally stumbled upon an episode of BE (where Owen Sleater is making the bomb) while watching tv and was immediately hooked. The cast is gold and you can learn a lot about Prohibition and the criminal world it gave birth to.

I saw that show when it aired. My first contact with it was when I bought a blue ray copy. Best investment I ever did. Since then I became a religious follower of HBO. It's a shame it got ignored by so many people. It was overshadowed because The Sopranos ended a few years ago before BE aired. It was still fresh and many labeled it down as Sopranos in the 20s even though it was really different. Yeah Jimmy was my favorite character. Wish they did more with him.

i loved boardwalk empire for the first 2 seasons but as is the case for most shows, the longer it goes on the more convoluted and odd things get.
i was watching it on sky atlantic as it was premiering and part the way through season 3 after the big stuff started happening (spoilers, not gonna say) the scheduling on things conflicted and it stopped recording boardwalk empire. i think it was because of that i stopped watching it and didn't feel like i was missing anything and didn't go back to finish the show. i didn't even realise it got to 5 seasons until i looked it up later on.
that being said, some of the characters in the show are really intriguing, my favourites being richard and agent nelson. seeing their stories unfold made the show a lot more riveting.

How basically your sins follow you. I loved it.

Maybe it's the hormones, but I almost teared up watching this, reminding me how much I loved this show and why I was hooked in the first place. Also, hence it was critically acclaimed, there wasn't a big of a fanbase that I could find and vibe with.
It might be an exaggeration (I think it's not), but for me, what I really loved in this series was how all the ladies were strong characters in their own way. All of them, even the wives how maybe appeared in one episode. I felt that females were represented right in media (for me) for the first time. I loved a bunch of them, I hated a lot of them. They were humans.
And of course, the male cast was as wonderful and well-written as well. Especially, since there was a really looong period, where I was whole-heartedly rooting for Nucky to get away with his shits and get his morality back and be a good guy. :D Yet, I liked his arc. And many others' as well. Ah, such a great show.

    • @ana-isabel
      @ana-isabel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I couldn't agree more! 😭 Each character was written with so much care and with extremely compelling, satisfying arcs. Like you, I was 100% rooting for Nucky in the first few seasons and while that may have changed as the series went on, I was still captured by his story and relationships (most of them, at least 😂) and I think they ended it perfectly.
And yes - loved the way they wrote the women in this show; likeable and strong, but also flawed and deeply human. Even those who started out like flat tropes (***spoilers*** ex. Lucy Danziger) eventually developed intriguing stories of their own.
Definitely one of HBO's finest, can't wait to rewatch it all one day!

Super underrated, and I learned recently that it was apparently cut short from running beyond five seasons. At least they were all stellar, but damn; it deserved a much larger audience.

One thing to add: Nucky Thomson is also based on a real-life historic person. Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, who was a powerful and corrupt politician/bootlegger from Atlantic City during the Prohibition era.
Unlike the show version though, the real "Nucky" ,never killed somebody (alledgedly) and was more of a "middleman".
Basically,he made a fortune by bringing gangsters in touch with smugglers, who would bring the illegal booze over to the US from Canada,Cuba or Ireland. He would also make sure that local law enforcment & coast guard (which he had in his pocket, the county Sheriff was his brother, like in the show) would look the other way and even arrange transport via trucks, that he owned.
He ws also involved in election fraud and all sorts of illegal activities, would act as a "mediator" between enemy gangsters and even organised the infamous "Atlantic City Conference" in 1927,a meeting between the most powerful East Coast gangsters.
Eventually,he got sentenced to 10 years of prison for tax evasion, but only served 4 years.

      @ana-isabel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh man, I did read somewhere that Nucky was based on a Nucky *Johnson* but I had no idea he performed plenty of similar activities to his TV counterpart. The real-life one's a softer version (based on this info), but he captures much of the same corruption/criminality. Interesting trivia - thanks for sharing! 😃

Maybe I'm alone here but I infinitely prefer boardwalk empire to breaking bad or sopranos. It's far more visually interesting as a period piece and nucky is a far more interesting and compelling main character. It's also the gold standard for historical fiction.

My review intro starts with BE's intro: it sucked. This is almost the universal opinion and represents the most fast-forwarded intro in history. Horrible, unsuitable music with wonky filming. The close-ups of Buscemi's airbrushed face can cause projectile vomiting.
Pros: Great period piece, often overlooked chapter of US history.
Interesting use and development of minor characters into major characters.
Excellent creative use of the characters Harrow and Van Alden, among others.
Clothes, cars, and sets very authentic.
Great music, especially in the Onyx scenes.
Masseria was the only guy who looked like a real gangster, Luciano gets an honorable mention. Nucky and Rothstein both looked like undertakers.
Cons: Trying to create a fictional story based loosely (or otherwise) on real characters and taking far too many liberties weaving the fiction with fact. If you are not completely unaware of history, you cannot get past this in episode after episode. Nucky, first and foremost, was nothing like his real-life version.
Hiring a major douche like Michael Pitt and allowing his character to become one that quickly overshadows Nucky Thompson... before realizing you have to fire this narcissistic, combative drunk, thus making viewers angry. (All of the negative things about Pitt were angrily decried during and immediately after the show by Pitt-Fan boys, but they turned out to be VERY true years later, didn't they?
Casting Buscemi in the lead role. (He was a exact opposite, physically, of the real Thompson.)
Being lazy with casting AGAIN, and casting old Sopranos actors in re-tread gangster roles.
Implying that , because it is Prohibition everyone is drinking whisky all day, all the time, in every major scene.
Reducing almost all gangster interactions to sliding an envelope across a table, double-crossing the competitors on a daily basis or naming a percentage to given or taken in a business deal (while drinking whisky). It was a little more complicated than that.
Turning Eddie's character into a new comical farce of his previous character - after he is 'promoted' by Nucky for being so loyal - and then killing him off.
Having this colorful entourage of historical figures drinking, arguing and generally just hanging out together like it was an everyday occurrence and rather serendipitous, and actual history didn't exist. Like Hitler, Stalin and Churchill meeting in Rome for ice cream to argue about the Sudetenland. And then driving home. I just binge-watched 'Sopranos' a second time and what do I see in BE? The SAME wacka-doodles suddenly reincarnated (in New Jersey... again), as Tony Soprano would say. (And they considered Gandolfini for Nucky's role, too! Give it a break.

Boardwalk Empire is far better than Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad isn't terrible but its overhyped and overrated.
