00:00 Boardwalk Empire Meanswer Review Introduction
Among the most well-acclaimed gangster TV shows is Boardwalk Empire, and as menswear enthusiasts, it’s more fun to watch because of the clothing of male characters.
Set during the prohibition years in the US, “Boardwalk Empire” is an HBO TV show that spans the 1920s era of bootleggers. The series first aired in 2010, starting at the eve of Prohibition in 1920. The show aired over the course of four years, carrying a period for 11 years up till 1931 in 56 episodes or five seasons. During this time in history, menswear saw a transition from the sober, formal dress of the previous century to a more relaxed outfit.
    The Men and Their Style:
03:37 Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi): Suits
    06:32 Nucky's Shirts & Collars
    09:28 Nucky's Shoes, Boots, & Socks
    11:14 Nucky's Ties & Accessories
12:47 Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt): Suits & Shirts
    16:58 Jimmy's Boots, Socks, Accessories
18:36 Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams)
    20:43 Richard Harrow (Jack Huston)
    23:30 Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale)
    27:11 Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza)
If you’re looking for actual wearability in the modern age, we think Lucky Luciano pulled it off the best, most likely because of his understanding of color combinations.
At the end of the day, Boardwalk Empire is like a lot of other series. It’s great fun to watch. It’s interesting as a menswear enthusiast. But, historically, it’s not really accurate. If you really want to know what men actually wore in 19-teens, we recently made a guide for that, and we have an upcoming one about the 1920s.
That being said, we applaud any television show that focuses on classic menswear because it exposes that style to a broader mainstream audience. And we firmly believe that because of these shows, new people want to learn more about it, maybe wear a suit, maybe wear a collar pin or a tie after all, which is great for our cause in general.

My favorite outfit in Boardwalk Empire is one of Chalky White's three piece suits. The fabric of the jacket and pants is a dark blue or purple with a bold rust orange windowpane check. The waistcoat is solid rust orange to match the color of the check pattern in the jacket. That combination knocked me out!

I always thought that some characters looked believable but others were just way too stylised for the era. I must say, though, that the round collars that point inward on Nucky's shirts were so intriguing to me that I actually had a shirt made like that for myself. It's a really sleek design.

I have always wondered if the actors get to keep the bespoke clothing made for them in these kinds of shows. For instance Daniel Craig, does he have to return all those suits that are bespoke made for his body? I imagine the suits made for boardwalk empire or downtown abbey were many tens of thousands, especially considering that they had to have special fabrics made. You couldn’t really wear a boardwalk empire suit out as normal wear, but you could definitely wear 007 clothing. Then again, those celebrities have more money than they could possibly ever spend, and already spend 10-50k on multiple suits regularly.

Another excellent video. Raphael, you are simply the best at this with the most knowledge and in-depth information. I love your attitude about the outfits not being quite period accurate, but being okay or understanding about it. After all, it's a drama, not a documentary and you understand that building and informing the character is what costume design is all about, not striving to be the most accurate. As for the suit you wear in this video, I was fortunate enough to see it up close and personal at the second annual StyleCon a few years back. Still looks great.

I own a pair of NOS oxfords from the mid 20's. They are cemented construction. It's only recent times that cemented construction was strictly a sign of cheap shoes. When you do away with the welt you can make something a lot more sleek.
FYI no they don't fit me. Men's feet were a lot smaller then. By modern sizing they would probably be a US men's size 8AAAA. I got them really cheap and just wanted them.

I believe that most characters wore collar bars because the collars were not starched to a proper degree of stiffness. Few of them have the unyielding quality of a period collar- you shouldn't even be able to bend a really hard starched collar enough to use a collar bar. Best available example - Herbert Hoover.

Any and every time I see suspenders on snugly fit pants I know it's poor dressing from the movie staff. Men weren't so cumbersome on purpose, as a standard.

Frankly, I could not care less about your nagging about those tiny out-of-era flaws when it comes to the clothing. BE is just such a great show with so many topics and issues of the of WWI America that the pure genius of the whole makes up for any shortcomings. Besides, it´s more than an opinion of yours really, since there had surely always been variations and alterations of the trends popular back then. One should at least be aware of that.

I'd love to dress like Nucky Thomson but I don't have a spare $50,000 laying around and 3 hours a day to do it.
