The guy who plays Capone Stephen Graham is from my city Liverpool in the UK one of the greatest actors of our generation a lot of people don't know he is actually English. Even though he is a movie star he still comes back to the city and teaches an acting class in his old neighborhood.

@Barry Allen not true, a lot of it was fiction, made for TV drama. Nucky Johnson not Thompson came from an affluent family in New Jersey, he wasn't Catholic or Irish he was a Methodist, Nucky Johnson, was never connected with a single act of violence let alone a murder, he did make a lot of his money because of prohibition and the sale of liquor, but he also gave back a great amount of that money to the community, after the Volstead act was repealed Me. Johnson also helped open up a lot of alcohol rehabilitation clinics, and did not die on the boardwalk but in his own bed in his 60s. Gyp Rosetti a main character in season 3 was not a real person, and the idea that Arnold rothstein, Charlie Luciano, Meyer lansky, Al Capone or any other Jewish or Italian mobsters where in cahoots with Nucky Johnson is unproven hearsay and television drama and fluff. It was a great show, some of the mafia story lines are true, but for the most part boardwalk empire is an act of fiction based in a time period where you could mix a lot of fact and fiction to tell a great story.

Same as Hannibal the series. He came in as Mason Verger, one of the most evil characters ever, found out her sister was pregnant and had the foestus pulled out and her fallopian tubes ruined so she could never conceive. and was superb, it was the end of nseason 2 which was getting really weak till he showed up, so really looking forwards to season 3 and Michael Pitt had quit!

I just started watching Boardwalk Empire for the first time ever and I'm on episode 6 in season one. Its already a masterpiece show in my opinion. The acting, the women on the show are gorgeous especially Kelly MacDonald, the characters, the setting, etc. The scene where Capone, Darmody, and the head Italian guy go meet with the one Italian guy about Greek town territory. They discover that Darmody has a brass knuckle knife on him and soon as they get ready to leave, the front desk girl hands them their coats back and Darmody and Capone takes all of those mafia guys out. That whole sequence of scenes were so beautifully done.

It was a knife Jimmy had in his boot that he saved from the war but it had a handle that went around the fingers. The show just keeps getting better and better and Steve Buscemi's portrayal of Nucky Thompson is one of if not the best lead roles in a crime drama, even more so than James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano. The show has some of the best writers, a great cast, and it's the only TV series that really does a good job of covering the Prohibition-era. Even the smaller details like the way the boardwalk looks and the suits that they wear make it look that much more authentic.

The reaaon I love Michael is because he is a good man with a good heart who sees the mistakes of that life, yet he never ratted or snitched. He discusses the business and his past life in it, however he never named names and never turned on anyone and did his prison hit like a man. Not only that, he came out better and tries to keep others from making the mistake of leading a life of crime since the government has absorbed most crime syndicates (they do not like competition).

Great video, FYI though - 'Consumption' is actually an old term for Tuberculosis 'TB', that's what Nucky says his wife died of. Not many people know that but I know it as i'm Irish born and my Great Grandmother and a few of her siblings died of it in the early 20th century so grew up hearing my family talk about all the old deaths from 'Consumption'.

The Volstead Act was actually enforced-not by the FBI-but by the Treasury Department (the Secret Service was also a part of the Treasury Department from its inception until shortly after 9/11 ca. 2003). Van Alden and the other prohibition agents investigating Nucky also commandeered/set up HQ in a post office because it was the only federal building in the area.

Thank you for discussing this series. I hope you get to watch more episodes, because I like this series better than "The Sopranos." "The Sopranos" is by far one of the greatest series ever produced, but being a big history buff, I just love "Boardwalk Empire." And I'll argue that this was Steve Buscemi's best work, which is saying something considering his incredible career. This series is so well cast, so well written, so well acted, produced, and shot. It really puts you in the time period, and I've watched it twice. I even love the opening theme song. Plus, it doesn't pull any punches about the ugly side of prohibition and the rise of Cosa Nostra, along with the corruption of politicians and some wealthy individuals of the time. It has compelling characters. I think Jimmy Darmody is probably one of the most tragic characters of the whole series. I feel bad for him, but then I also hate him. He has been through so much serving in the Army during The Great War (World War I), but his whole origin is tragic and mired with sickness.
Great serires. I could go on and on about it. Thanks for what you do. Much respect.

I've been searching my family history, and found out that my great-grandfather August Kissinger was one of the captains that was bringing booze in on the New Jersey coastline. I found a newspaper article with his name on it and in the article were Court transcripts in which he refused to answer questions pertaining to who the alcohol was being transported for or to. Refusing to talk that's what people did back then, dishonor was more important than a prison sentence. If you did keep your mouth shut did your time like a man your family was taken care of financially while you served your sentence.

I remember a quote from Ken Burns' documentary about prohibition. It went something along the lines of that there are two kinds of law-breaking. The first kind are the types of crimes that *most* people will not commit, even if they could get away with, it because it's morally wrong and their conscience won't allow it (murder, theft, r@pe, etc). The second kind are the ones that people don't consider to be morally wrong (eg, driving over the speed limit, jaywalking, running a red light at 3AM on a Sunday night, etc) and therefore will usually break it when they can get away with it. Prohibition fell under the second kind and that's why it failed so miserably. People didn't consider drinking to be morally wrong (unlike what the prohibitionists believed) and therefore didn't believe that it was a crime to break that law.

Great video, about a wonderful series. BTW, In the old days "Consumption" was another name for Tuberculosis. My favorite character in it (besides "Nucky", Steve Buscemi), was "Richard Harrow" (Jack Huston).
When my Grandfather came to New York in the early 1920's from Sweden, his first two jobs were working for Arnold Rothstein: First as a race track shill (in this case meaning a person at the track spreading out the winning bets on crooked thoroughbred horse races to keep suspicion lower and the odds higher), and later as a truck driver for bootleg liquor. He only did them for a couple of years then moved on. He died in the 1980's long before I thought to ask him if he ever went to Atlantic City for a load.

When I watch it, my head is remembering Little Carmine quotes at every opportunity.
