Our boat has two 8L3B main engines and a six cylinder auxiliary for the bow thruster. Absolute diamonds for engines. Learning so much about them from your videos. Awesome.

    Thank you Joe.
Got to love the simplicity of the Gardner pump.
I panicked a bit when I took my first one to pieces some years back, but they really are just a little engine.

So the governor spring keeps the engine on high fuel delivery, until the reeves increase & the centrifugal force of the weights,
depress the spring which then lowers how much fuel is delivered. What I really like is, the 'designers of the Gardner Engine',
had never heard of the practise of planed: "Obsolescence". After looking at these wonderful Engines, I am in agreement with
you, that they are probably the best Diesel Engines ever made! All most like Meccano, using the same parts on all motors!
Long lasting, Good on fuel, Reliable, and they sound great. 👍 Thank You Joe, & have a great day.

Fantastic! I don't own a Gardner engine but I'm learning an awful lot from your videos. Very much enjoying your Gardner engine series.

Awesome. In school I remember being taught about the helical fuel spill in a Bosch fuel pump plunger critical to variable fuel delivery. Cool to see a similar arrangement in the Gardner pump. You did a good job explaining the balance of forces in the Governor system. Gardner - my new favorite old diesel marine engine. ❤

Thanks very much Joe this is a great explanation, I have taken a Bristol VRT/SL3 to Italy and with your videos I have a hope of explaining maintenance to the mechanic in italian.

Best sound ever is running Gardner injector pumps on a genuine Gardner testbench.
Sounds just like the engine running.
Just run a 5LW pump today.

That's a beautiful bit of engineering there. I'd love one to show on the coffee table. The Missus might have something to say though.

Excellent video and thank you so much Joe. I have an experience with the engine stall and stopped after a higher rpm ran say 10 minutes. Then occurred traffic congest and slow down e.g. 2 - 3 minues. When I planned to full stop and changing gear to the 1st it suddenly stopped. Fortunately it has starter motor and resumed rapidly. However it was running properly since not slow down to idle. It ran another highway then go to the town road I fel the throttle was laggy while gear down. Rpm is not raise as my paddle. However it seems normal on next start after cool down. It is a 5LW with David Brown manual gear box as a bus appliance.

Do a video on adjusting the governor on a 6LXB. I've got one in a locomotive that cuts out like it's starving for fuel every time it is put in gear (the rack moves forwards to starve the engine when suddenly loaded) Have adjusted idle speed to no gain. Also sometimes when pulling the throttle there is no response until you've given it about 2 or 3 pulls. A mystery box to me.
The 6LXB injection pump doesn't have the long lever attached to the back of the rack as in this video. But this video has helped clear the fog out my mind of how it all works!

You are really sure the rack is COMPLETELY free?

Joe, i remember about thirty years ago, i replaced the timing chain on a gardner 6hlx, the way we did it back then, and the way we were instructed to do so, was to line up the pop marks on the sprockets with a length of string attached to the timing cover studs, is this the correct procedure? It did line up and ran just fine, cant see this procedure working these days.

Hi Joe, how to setting the fuel pump tappets?

  • @stottybox3185
    @stottybox3185 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Joe, the pump is divided into two parts, the pump heads, the cam box and the governor at the back, err thats 3 i think.

The heavy governor weights do make the accelerator pedal on some Gardner engined vehicles quite heavy I have found.

Hi Joe, trying to repair a Gardener 6LXB. The problem is that 5 out of 6 pistons in the pump head are corroded and seized in the closed (up position). Only one piston opens and closes on the spring. Any suggestions on how I can free up the seized pistons? Thanks
