      Totally agree, Read a story on a forum from a guy that had a Seddon Atkinson truck with a 6LX in it,.. it did 2.5 million miles, and all they changed in that time was a head gasket and the injectors. Was still chugging along like a beauty when some lucky person bought it off them.

    Greetings from Australia, I used to work on these (in my younger days)with the eight cylinder in Fodens and the six cylinder in Guys. Good reliable engines but expensive to rebuild.

      Hello Bob, greetings from Cornwall. I worked for AEC trucks in Bristol when I left school and worked on a Seddon Atkinson 8 wheeler with a Gardner 6LX engine in. It was a big rebuild as the motor sucked in water in a flood and bent several con rods. Hope to get to Aus one day.

    I have only worked on Gardner road vehicle engines, which have two thermostats. The point of having two, is that they are set at different temperatures, so you have a primary stat and a secondary stat - This arrangement reduces thermal stress by avoiding opening up the cooling system to very cold coolant.

    I am in my seventies but I well remember my father having an old motor yacht in the sixties with twin Gardners. These were far from young even then, six cylinder I seem to recall. I cannot remember the detail but you had to ease the compression when starting from cold. It had a header tank which you manually pumped fuel from the main tanks up to, of course gravity fed the engines. I often wonder what happened to both boat and engines. This was on the West Coast of Scotland and the boat was called TSDY Maori. I would love to hear if anybody has any recollection of her. There was still a large herring fleet back then and they all had single screw Gargners.

    It'a not that the injectors cannot handle the excess pressure from the pump, it is that they leak internally once worn.

    • @bobw7066
      @bobw7066 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you are not quite correct about the wear factor, the pintle pins in the injectors do not have any seals around them and when the pressure from the pump hits the pintle pin and lifts it off the seat to inject the diesel into the cylinder a small amount of diesel by passes (it also lubricates the pin) and comes out through what we call here in Australia the dribble line then into the return line back to the fuel tank. I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for almost sixty years on trucks and earthmovers. Take care every one

      It strikes me that this powerplant is simple, uncomplicated, built to an exceptionally high standard, world-famous for reliability and very long life, world-famous for fuel economy and ease of operation.
      In applications such as narrowboat propulsion, a marinised automotive high-speed diesel with variable turbo, common rail injection, closed-loop fuel control, labyrinthine exhaust processing and urea injection………..is pointless. The installation in a narrowboat operates 98% of its life at tickover. All the additional mechanical and electronic clutter over and above that fitted to this engine equates to additional points of failure, expense, and ongoing maintenance cost.
      From a sustainability point of view, refreshing the engine shown for another 70 years of service is vastly better than buying a complex and resource-hungry parts-rich new one.

    • @GorillaZillas

      @@frederickbowdler1509 Strangely enough, modern diesels need to be run to at least 80% of their rated horsepower for an hour every week to remain healthy. Running the engines they make nowadays at tickover in a narrowboat for long periods in time would likely not go well.
