    Thanks for showing it running, it looks very good. Yes, I would say the machine shops way of providing valve clearance was "primitive" and also showed a lack of concern, or maybe understanding, of what they were really trying to accomplish. I worked for Cummins for 30 years so have an appreciation for diesel engine intricacies.

    When I win the lottery Joe I'll be on the ferry across the Irish Sea to order a pair of 4LWs for my new yacht. Great video as usual, never knew that above the Gardner valves. But then again I've been fortunate that the Gardners I have had the pleasure of sailing with have not needed to be stripped down. They just kept purring along.

    Lovely. I would never have thought of that problem. Guess you'll add this to your rebuild checklist.

    I always get something out of your video's :) Where I volunteer at a Tourist and Heritage Railway, we have 3 Engines, one installed in a loco and two standing by to be swapped in if needed :)

    A simple cutter using a cylinder head and the valve guides would accomplish the simple but accurate machining operation

      Thanks lot for that, but we normally leave the whole process to the machine shop.

    You would think that any machine shop would have a milling machine and wouldn't need to do those pockets the backyard way.
    Not exactly professional.

    I don't remember seeing those recesses on my 8LXB when I had one of the heads off, do you switch to 40 grade oil in the summer months?

    • @scrumpydrinker
      @scrumpydrinker ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You wouldn’t, they were only required on the LW / HLW which had a 4 1/4 inch bore with the valves had a greater width than the bore. With the LX / LXB the bore was 4 3/4 inch so the valves would have space to move without needing the recesses.

      @@scrumpydrinker thanks that makes sense, hopefully I won’t be seeing them again anytime soon

    It would seem an easy job even on the smallest milling machine. I can not imagine hitting it with a hammer. From a machine shop? Wow

    "A very specialized machine that they themselves invented"? They themselves invented the FLY CUTTER?
    Hilarious. Yeah. No machine shop would EVER have a fly cutter.

    youd think any reconditioner would pick up on this.even if youve never come across it before.this is really basic stuff if your profession is engine reconditioning
