Thanks again Joe for another great vid. Its good to glean some knowledge on these engines. Would love to see some videos of running units.

LXB cam shaft ground with a 10 degree extra lift. You see and feel if you hold the cam. Gardner main competitor Leyland introduced an engine that offered superior performance to the LX. Gardner responded with the LXB. PS I served my time as an apprentice at the Barton Hall Works Patricroft, Eccles. They were batch produced and custom built. The main point of contention between Paul and Jack Gardner was turbo charging. Jack Gardner totally opposed to turbos, while Paul Gardner was privately testing the concept. It did not end well!

Most original Gardner marine engines are ran at 1350 rpm for a continuous heavy rating with heavy flywheels and 2uc or 3uc gearboxes I've owned 3 vessels all gardener powered some engines with 40,000 hours un touched

Years ago when defiantly knew, but if plate missing off injection pump with hp at designated rpm, injection pump plungers different size on lx to lxb perhaps? Something in my mind says 6mm diameter for lx, 6.5mm for lxb.
For the lw, ended up at 20 hp per cylinder but lw/20 even more smokey than usual lw when cold (not surprising at 13:1 compression ratio, do are Volvos), think over the years 1700rpm power went from 102 to 112 to 120hp for 6lw. Think the 120hp gained the power but got better specific fuel consumption than 112hp 6lw, so in reality fuel consumption pretty much the same. Got ERF rigid curtainsider with 6lxb in, and on mixed run with some motorway running in get 16mpg. Know nitrous oxide and particulate levels high.....but that's still good in my book
Thank you for the lovely video.

Morning Joe. i have an LX along side my other collection of LXB's, the LX cylinder head is a type 2 head with the extra 3/8 B.S.F stud which after a bit of studying is the exact stud pattern as LXB - the only difference as you mentioned the rounded corners of the head and the valve seat angles- the diameter of the valve seats, inlet and exhaust outlet chambers seem to be the same as LXB - could (only a thought) replace the valve seats in the LX type 2 head to LXB valve seats, guides, valves/rocker arms etc? also i noticed that the heads both LXB and LX are stamped on the top of the heads at each end where the decompression levers are? only a thought - was wanting a spare head as a boat spare parts item. cheers Brad

Ah, Brad, thanks for that. I forgot about the LXB stamp near the compression lever. Yes, you can replace the valve seats in an LX head with LXB ones.

H Joe, another brilliant video and very informative. I have a question if you don’t mind. I am looking to buy a historical lorry with a 6LW that has been overheated but l don’t know to what degree (no pun intended) but he says it still runs ok and has good oil pressure, could you give me any advice please ? Regards Tony Hawkridge.

Very difficult to answer Tony. I have over heated my own LW without long term damage. Better to email me directly.

Takes a very skilled hand to do Gardner injectors

Yep and Joe isn't one of them. He does not have a Gardner fuel pump and injector test bench

Also look on cylinder head where rocker shafts are secured they should be stamped lx or lxb

On the LX the inlet manifold is closer to the engine the bakelite joints are thinner that's going back a bit the collet type valves were a replacement for screw top exhaust valves they went through a spate of dropping valves they couldn't alter the inlet valve because of the mask ,

    The 6LX marine engine gave 127 hp @ 1500 rpm. The 6LW marine engine gave 72 hp @ 1500 rpm. The 5LW gave 60 hp @ 1500 rpm.

Talk about a contradiction at 3:06.....?

    • @chumanho
      @chumanho 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see no contradiction there.
      1. LXs either have a stud at the end of the head or not.
      2. LXBs always have a stud at the end of the head.
Therefore, if you see no stud at the end of the head, that's an LX, end of story.

Worked on many a Gardner engines mostly 6LX engines , has a heavy diesel fitter in the 60s/70s , great engines but they wouldn't pull you out of bed , good has a marine engine or geny setts, but not so good on road wagons or dump trucks .

Rebuilt heads using old used exhaust valves? We have just rebuilt our 6LX In our Foden and LX specific parts, including valves and injectors are available off the shelf from other well known Gardner Spares suppliers. Please don’t spread false information
