    Hello, you should test with a paint gun for miniatures. It's very cheap, provided you already have the compressor. The advantage is that you can dose the amount of air and a lot of air mixed with the alcohol dries faster.

    I need a comparison between this and polysmooth. they're like 10-20$ apart but this cheaper filament looks exactly the same...

      Pretty much the same thing. But I haven’t found any actual tests to prove it.

    Hi, im new to this 3D print stuff. Question: If I wanted to paint this Vader statue, what type of paint is recommended for it? Thanks!

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think just about any paint will work. If you plan on using PVB filament, like what is used in this video, I would stay away from alcohol paints. But acrylic paint and spray paint should be fine.

    I wonder how well the smoothing would work if you tried applying it with an airbrush. It would be aerosolizing the IPA, which is essentially what the Polymaker Polysher thing does, you just wouldn't have the chamber.

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Might work, but remember, the smaller the droplet of alcohol, the faster it evaporates. The reason Polysher doesn’t have that problem is because it is in a closed system.

    Great test! Do you know if this is more heat resistant than PLA? I need something that is more rigid than PETG but can also survive a day in a hot car.

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your best bet for car parts is either ABS or nylon. You will need an all-metal hot end to print it, though. I doubt PVB is heat resistant as it prints at the same temperature as PLA

    • @-Ricochet-
      @-Ricochet- ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SouthpawWorkshop Well, ABS stinks and nylon is too floppy. And both are a PITA to print. The search for an easy to print but durable material continues I guess. Thanks for confirming.

      @@-Ricochet- maybe try one of the heat-treatable or heat-resistant PLAs

    • @mthqwork123

      @@-Ricochet- Try ASA maybe. Harder to print than PLA but its UV resistant and bit more heat resistant than PETG.

    Can you share your print settings? How did they compare to PLA?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prints just like PLA. Normal temperatures, normal speeds.

    once you apply a first coat are the lines gone?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it took several applications to smooth it out. Printing at .1 layer height may help speed up the smoothing process.

  • @mpark0
    @mpark0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Did the smoothed print ever dry? or was it always tacky?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dried solid. Super glossy too!

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Worked the best for me. Just takes a little more patience. Even better would be a light sanding and then the spray method if you are looking for super-smooth and glossy

    Why not dip and then wash? Would that be more even?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly, as long as it stays wet long enough to melt the surface. I like the control the sprayer gives me.

    It's not great so far for me I'm like double that amount of alcohol spray on a small temp tower.
    Im.teying a vapor smoothing now
