(*Correction*) I think in this review I implied that Crystal dynamics Developed the game, it was in fact Eidos Montreal who pulled the duties this time (perhaps with some input from CD), this would likely explain some of the writing and inability to wrap up the previous two games in a satisfying way.
Wish the last 2 games they could work the story more but it too late we all want a satisfying ending to the game but the 3rd game I don’t buy the ending at all
I like you videos but I hate this. I'm kinda tired of people reviewing things and not knowing shit about it. Take the time and do the research. Sure i'm coming off as smug and pompous but, what i'm finding is people consider you youtubers as "experts" on the subject when you're really not. You're just fans of gaming like anyway else. I'm starting to see this all over the place with prominent youtubers. So maybe its being nitpicky Joe but, Crystal Dynamics didnt make the game. You mention it couple of times but, the reason the vibe is so different is Eidos Montreal made this game and Crystal Dynamics was only there fore consulting. Also you mention the gaming being so heavy on action and combat yet, I feel like its the biggest weakness is how unaction packed the game actually is compared to how intense rise was. I also find Rise to be way better than the original. I wrote this about 10 minutes after the review and never posted it and I'd like to say thank you for putting out a correction. It adds a huge part to your credibility. I like that you unlike other people own up to shit and it makes me respect you a lot more.

The ending to this game was so drawn out and boring, with it feeling pretty much the same as the first. Story was poor and after Spiderman the facial animation and lip syncing were terrible. Disappointing shit.
Forget which review I heard it on, but someone was saying that they really hope that the DLC for this game is just a campaign of "Here's the route Jonah took" and it's just him standing in elevators or taking some stairs. :^)
That would be a hillarious story. Make him weaker than Lara, gives many stealthier mission, give many hillarious jokes and 4th wall breaking about how impossible level construction is and end it with him finding more easier way to travel to meet Lara in exit place...
The funniest scene was after Lara murders everyone at the oil refinery, Jonah just came out with a face saying sup as if he was on a stroll the whole time lol

This game was kinda dumb with how Jonah was ALWAYS just around the corner for Lara somehow. Lara at one point ends up in the jungle all alone with no weapons and has to sneak her way to an oil refinery, taking down dozens of men and even going on a killing spree when she thinks Jonah is dead. Then when she's done, standing in the mud and rain, he just calmly walks up to her, almost like he's saying "what's up, Lara, why you so sad?"
The creatures were by far the most intriguing aspect of the story. They genuinely creeped me tf out. I got serious decent vibes in that section. I wanted to know more. With this trilogy being done I hope to see more tomb raider in the future. Maybe something that is a little closer to its roots. Not precisely the same but it would be nice to see classic fearless Lara back again.
Yes I loved the creatures and their lore really intriguing stuff that sadly was only a little bit explored. I think Andres Lopez and his expedition are even more intriguing but they only flesh it out in about somewhat in the documents you collect and it’s barely mentioned in the story. Also they make references to the real life Percy Fawcett in documents and created a fictional story for him which I thought was really creative. The designers really put a lot of world building behind this game but they probably should have put a little more of that passion and thoughtfulness into the main story as well.
The story was so f ing boring in the reboot trilogy. Shadow was so bad i never finished it. From sheer boredom. rise was okay. The first one was my favourite but still bland. I can’t wait to replay the legendary trilogy remastered next v feb

But there's also more games than movies coming out right now and we'll get a lot more in the next 3mos MORE than the rest of the year cuz most games come out around Sept thru Nov for some reason like clock work instead of finishing games they're rushed out but I digress. Now it's also cuz of the community backlash from last couple yrs where we didn't get but rapid fire non angry reviews for all the biggest games! If that happens again then it'll really hurt the ch a 3rd yr now. But if he manages to get all the major tripleA games an angry review this yr then we'll be a happy audience again. I can't believe that they still refuse to give Lara her Dual pistols back ans still try to push this bow and arrow shtick, it's like making a Robin Hood movie where he never uses his bow and just runs around and fights with a bamboo staff instead and the filmmakers try to pretend that it's his new iconic weapon. And you can't claim that a bow is a more realistic option, in real life history bows were swapped for pistols for a good reason.
I don’t understand what the obsession with the dual pistols is. If she was going to use them, she would have carried them from the first reboot game onwards, where she used them in a QTE. It should be clear from that point that the developers had no intention of having them ever becoming the iconic version of this version. I dint see what using them has got to do with being angry either, or what this “defining”moment is supposed to be about.
I'm gonna guess he has been making up for lack of reviews lately. Maybe having to do a lot of that kickstarter for the street fighter miniatures game and having to get new merch before letting them release
That's cause it dtiched its unique identity as a platforming series whilst doing nothing new or outstanding to even justify it. It'll be forgotten cause it's just trying to desperately be like other games. It's trying to be something it's not. The series is a shadow of its former self and yes in the long run it's going to slowly die off as people begin to realise that the developer's making these games are just exploiting current marketable trends.
I just got annoyed with this watered down mess halfway in.....Story is utter shit, no villans, item collectibles are generic. Puzzles are good but whats the point when the narrative is nonexistent
@@keenai5652 yeah the game is fucking boring. I force myself to play it but only for the graphics at this point because they are nice to look at. But I've no interest in Lara's story at all. Also the puzzles are fucking boring and glitching. You get no real sense of accomplishment. Most of the time you're like "yeat it is a tomb raider game but this shit is just insane". Also most of the puzzles made no sense. Like an entrance covered in wood and you have to light it up to burn. To burn it you need to provide oil there via some weird contraption. First of all why can't I use fire arrows to light up the oil? xD and second of all this "burn the wood entrance" makes no goddamn sense. And they even have some immersion options in the settings and then there is this shit which breaks it completely.
To be fair...would she carry all those weapons around to EVERY location? Like if I survived the first game I wouldn't just keep all those weapons on my person at all times. Usually she is thrust into situations where she loses her equipment. In this one their plane crashes and she only finds her bow I believe. So it makes sense.
I just felt like if they maintained that she didn't carry the 2 pistols in the game, at least near the end they could've added a scene where she picks them up, not specifically those iconic pistols, just any dual pistols that she gets, maybe Jonah throws one and she catches it and you get to play her like she's at her most OP for a short time.
AngelKikoken I agree. Those double pistols are one of the most iconic aspects of the character and to not be able to use them at least once for combat in the new trilogy sucks. Not giving fans the ability to play the rebooted version of Lara in any of her old costumes (and instead only puts in the old pixel skins that says they are only fashion over function 🙄) or her dual pistols takes us away the icon we know and love from the beginning.
C'mon Joe, we live in a society!!! ...duel pistols are "iconic" like you said, so in 2018 they can't just be given away in a paid game. Anything iconic is to be sold as DLC :D Nice to have you back mate!
Well at least the lack of innovation hurts here cause it never had an outstanding formula, it had one that needed severe changes(albeit nice enough for the first game) but it saw only mild ones.
I feel bad for you. pre-2012 joe was best joe. so many reviews. When 2012 came he took a huge break and still (in my opinion) hasn't gotten back to the glory days yet. Still love his channel though
I'm not speaking to the quality of his reviews, although he had many good ones, but am speaking to the reviews in general seeing as his reviews started dipping in uploads. I understood his break at first, but after a couple years he just seemed like he didn't want to do it anymore and was burnt out. Glad he's finding his stride again but post-2012 he started slacking.
@Reloaded Past if you enjoyed the first two, you should have no problem playing this one. I got the definitive edition on sale and it was so worth it. You spend more time exploring than combat for sure but I feel it makes the world lore and actual history way better. Only pointers are rare lighting texture bugs and you should wait till you get the shotgun or lockpick to start backtracking as it's kinda metroidvania in terms of collecting.

I watch reviews of games I've finished so as to broaden my knowledge and opinion on them, and about games I expect not to like. This has always worked for me.
My favorite part about these reboot games is seeing Lara squeeze through very tight narrow passages and knowing that the old-school Lara Croft had a couple...features... that meant she could never get through a passage like that.
Currently playing Rise of the Tomb raider. Kinda was hoping that they would move beyond the plot force of "MY DAD FOUND SOMETHING THEREFORE I MUST FIND IT" thing that the first game had. Not saying it's bad or anything but after seeing it MULTIPLE times (in video games or movies) it gets annoying to the point were I just wanna scream. I hope that after this trilogy they start having her do adventures that are driven by HER lust for adventure. Uncharted did that in the second game and it worked so I see no reason that they cant have Laura say "You know what, I'm gonna go find some stuff because I WANT TO, no one telling me to find it cause of some Secret conspiracy but because I'm the MUTHA FUCKIN TOMB RAIDER AND I WANT TO RAID SOME TOMBS." love your vids joe, keep up the rage
Here's a problem I noticed. They made her a "legend" of some sort. Yeah, the bad guys and the locals knows the name "Lara Croft the tomb raider". "Be careful, she's dangerous," says a bad guys , "Lara croft the treasure hunter" - the kids knows her name. And yet I play as her and she's still "becoming" the tomb raider.
13:50 yeah... and 5 minutes later she have a crying crisis... this version of Lara is so bipolar... her actions during the gameplay dosen't match with her personality. The graphics are awesome, the gameplay is fun but the characters and the story are ludicrous.
None of these are Tomb Raider games they might as well make this series a new IP cause it has nothing to do with the source material outside of sub-surface level bullshit.

Good point, @Hunter Hagelin. Laura is pronounced Lo-rah or even Lo-ruh, so with the 'u' missing from Lara it is Lah-rah. Also, British people seem to say it more smoothly with their accents where as others seem to always call her Laura.
I find it unbelievable that he is still following Lara around after nearly dying in the last game. It isn't like they are childhood friends. Seems incredibly fake and forced.
The relics are in this game where you have to turn it around to get more story. They changed it so when you picked it up it doesnt automatically go to the screen which sucks because people will miss it. When you pick it up you have like 3 seconds to hit the option button to look at the relic
No basically yh kulkulkan is a destroyer god he gives you visions so that you can pursue ur dreams but instead if you do pursue it will destroy the world "remake it" domimguez tried to do it and he became the vessel for kulkulkan so he had some powers when lara kept stabbing him with the knife that power got transferred to her. And when she died she killed the kulkulan god as he was inside her not lara if you know what I mean so she didn't die. The ritual was to sacrifice the destroyer god.
The funny thing is Lara does get her double guns - during the first game! And it's somewhat easy to miss, at least I missed it on my first playthrough. It happens during the boss fight where you kill Mathias (or whatever his name was). There is a quicktime event where you pull your own pistol and then steal his from his belt and go to town with double guns. But it's very short and basically embedded in a cinematic/QTE so I guess it was easy to miss. But I think it was somehow meant to rationalize why she uses 2 guns.
Then let me rephrase: I didn't get it the first time, maybe because I most often don't pay attention during QTE sequences or whatever but it escaped me the first time
3:07 but this particular game was mainly developed by Eidos Montreal Joe. The first reboot game actually made it more epic as Lara actually used iconic dual pistols in the final boss fight. Meanwhile none of this actually fully implemented both in RIse & Shadow. Very confusing & a missed opportunity. Everything is Bow & Arrow fetish now. I think if the devs really want that stealth predator focus style for Lara, than imo the dual pistols could be implemented as special move (high damage) with a gauge filled with kills to balance things out. Maybe even some slow mo action system like Max Payne. With this in mind, maybe the devs able to put more faster, dangerous, & big health mini boss or staged bosses overall. Overall, definitely another formulaic & little improvements sequel, which is very common in COD & Ubisoft games like AC & Far Cry series.
I think the first one was the best followed closely by the second one. The third one just had a completely uninteresting story. Edit: I recently started playing the series again and tried Shadow after about a year since the last time i played it and realized that this game is actually pretty damn good with some epic horror elements that make the game pretty scary as well. My initial statement here about Shadow was way off base lol.
@@tigga2300 got all 3 on the steam summer sale and doing a 3 game marathon. So far I'm about 1/5 I think of the way through rise and TR was pretty cool I rly enjoyed it and for 2013 was way ahead of it's time. Rise so far has me intregued and does a lot for qol and I like the upgrades tied to hunting more and the story seems interesting I hope they continue the franchise with this Lara but continue to innovate, i feel like it can be hard to keep these games fresh as they tend to have the same weapons and coming up with new interesting puzzles can also be a challenge so they should take their time maybe 3-5 years from shadow for Dev time also where TF is the classic Lara outfits come on crystal shouldn't have to mod that sht fr LoL

You know what the joke is? The joke is head of the studio called The Last of Us 2 gameplay trailer a 'fake' because character animations in there are so good. And look at their game, this game's character animations are so poor that can't even compare to Uncharted4 what a joke. For the jaguar hunting part. It's remind me of lycan hunting in The Order 1886 and I think it doesn't look cool at all. Anyway keep up the good work Joe.

This game animations look like shit even compare to Uncharted4 which released couple years ago. For original TLoU if I remember correctly the fake part was just an AI. Which is common when showing off your game since it has to be scripted anyway otherwise it'll exceed the show time limit.
So because a guy said something stupid you say the whole studio is stupid, gotcha. The only one that always compares these games to Uncharted are the people that want to see it that way, just like you.
YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH, not only is TLOU 2 fake, the series as a whole has terrible clunky gameplay, without the story the game would have been 6/10 the upcoming sequel an 7/10
@@SaithMasu12 you don't really know why I compared to Uncharted? Fun fact TLoU2 that the head of this studio called it fake is made by the same studio that made Uncharted, Naughty Dog. It would be weird to compare this game to God of War which is not made by the same studio as TLoU2. And don't get me wrong. The graphics part to me this game looks better than Uncharted4 and God of War.
I liked Rise the most out of the series. The first one was great, I just like Rise a lot because of the diversity of the environments within the game. But Shadow was definitely a let down in terms of feel, mechanics, story, and progression.
I like the game, but I much preferred tomb raider reboot and rise of the Tomb raider. she does get on my nerves with her " I'm the only one who can do it" and " it's all my fault". I also think that on the reboot and rise she had more expression in her face and in her voice acting. I also don't get that she can leap and jump massive crevasses yet she can't always jump up and grab a ledge 2 foot above her.
I bought Rise a couple of days ago on Steam for 12€ with all dlc's included I believe, no regrets at all...the game runs beautifully on my GTX1050ti, actually much better than TR2013, probably better optimization I guess, and the game looks beautifull and plays even better ! I just don't like the fact that you don't get some essential gear for exploring early on, but gotta live with that...Shadow has only for just a little bit over a month been released and it is already on sale for 40€ :D I'll wait until it drops under 15€ probably.

"Those really fun collectables where you turn it around" that Joe mentioned (10:07) are still in this game. You just have to go to the menu and look at them. I mean, the game tells you you can do this every time you find one!
I wouldn't say it evened out (I just beat the game). Of course still talking comparatively to Tomb Raider 2013 - and it's only fair to compare the body count to 2013, because the Reboot takes place on a remote island. But just to give "Shadow..." a sporting chance I'll replay it on "easy" and do the math. Oh, and the game is bugged, can't complete 100% even though all regions on the map say I found everything.
The jungle setting is beautiful! The attention to detail in the environmental design is intricate and lovingly crafted. Also love how cinematic it is from cutscene transitions to when Lara climbs through/under obstacles. I really enjoyed the platforming and how the descriptions for the collectables are fully voice acted. On the other hand, the menu design is horribly confusing and the shooting mechanics are some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. Solid 7/10
Fair review, Though i enjoy the 2 previous installments more, this one was a good overall game. Some things that bothered me were the reuse of character models like crazy, how crafting the outfits and stuff pretty much was useless because you were forced to wear a specific outfit for most of, if not 90% of the game. The action was dropped down quite a bit from the previous ones rendering the weapon upgrades kind of useless for the majority of the game. The skill tree felt empty (while being huge) and a lot of skills were undesirable. Some of the good ones were pushed onto the outfits. Overall it was decent, and a fair 7/10. As for the dual pistols, one of the designers or directors said that this is the new Lara and was to be associated with her bow.
eLL I would give it a 6/10 tbh the hardest difficulty is pure shit with the checkpoints and the aiming is ass and the character are just dull expect Lara and Jonah still rest is the other characters from the first game again 6/10 just a disappointment even the graphics look muddy as hell
Meh, I liked first game of new trilogy because I expected them to show us how Lara became Tomb Rider we knew from older games- so I was very pleased to see her as pretty much a girl that had to start killing, murdering, looting and survive in extreme conditions in first game. I expected them to develop that in next 2 till in 3rd game (Shadow) she would finally become cocky, bad ass, little cynical Tomb Rider we knew from old games. I mean - if you killed over 100 people in the time of like what- 3 years - it would change anyone. And many times you didn't kill them in clean ways..... But they play safe card and she is still annoying whiny brat and doesn't seem mature at all and her being suddenly all emotional in Shadow after murdering another 30/40 human beings is just not well put for me. It doesn't make sense. Like after killing 20 people with FUCKING STABING THEM IN CHEST while looking in their eyes- she is suddenly all excited about some old mural/cave like little girl or is concerned about some ancient tribe killing others while she is pretty much walking terminator/assassin at this point. Also I fully expected Jonah to die in Shadow as maybe some final breaking point for her vs Trinity where she goes on rampage or something. But now, he survived and didn't serve any purpose in story. Overall- I thought 1st game was solid 9/10 for me (becasue what I expected next). Now it's 8/10 as the idea from it was totally not used to full potential. Second game (which I totally forgot what was going on...) is like 7/10 and Shadow is 6/10 for me. Honestly I don't really remember much from trilogy apart from first game. Sadly I think they started great but then went safe and boring. If you an wait- don't buy it now, wait for sale.

Bingo. Lara really just comes across as a little girl with daddy issues. Her development in the first game was quite interesting. But, it was like the developers were just too chicken to commit to her path.
The writing, plot-wise, isn't really up to snuff compared to say Uncharted, or dare I say, Indy. And the dialogue got kind of a cringey feel to it, like it's way too dead pan for its own good. There's gotta be some humorous moments thrown in once in awhile to lighten up the mood, or these types of over-the-top-storylines get ridiculous fast. Both Uncharted and Indy does this very well.
New Tomb Raider trilogy is just boring. It tries too hard to be serious and Uncharted-like and it comes off as fake and not genuine. I hope they make really good Lara Croft games and combine what was good in old ones with what we expect from an action game nowadays. Make it as beautiful and detailed as Uncharted 4 but give it unique Lara Croft vibe. Dual pistols, backflips and multiple cool locations in one game. Let us go to Egypt, Greece, Mexico and other places in one game instead of confining us to one location.

I'm convinced CD hates Lara Croft. They reboot her, strip everything fun from the character's design and personality, spend three games turning her into a remorseless killer with weak justifications for killing as many people as she does while also reveling in subjecting her to increasingly cruel and gratuitous deaths, and then just hand the last game over to somebody else like they couldn't be bothered.
I really didn't care for rise at all maybe it was the setting or the plot but something just didn't click with me, i really loved the first game though.
First game was far better, i was able to 100% progress on it. With Rise, the story is weak and the collectibles just didn't have the charm that the first one did (and they all had generic voice narration and none of the thoughts of Lara about them which made them even less interesting). Also they changed her face again, which people didn't really want after seeing her face in the first game. Also the side characters had no depth except for relations (like her step-mom Ana) and some plot twists were done in the story so early that i was often wondering if the story is short.

I'm about 10 hours into this game and I can say that I love it. Not often will I buy a game at full price but I'm really glad I did. From the beautiful visuals to the fun puzzles, this is a really well crafted game. Plus the different difficulty modes where you can turn off the white climbing markers gives the game some extra depth for exploration. You have to be looking for ways to navigate the environment instead of the game just telling you. This game isn't as good as Uncharted 4 but it comes very close.
If they could just make the damn story better in these games!!! Stop making Trinity the ‘mustache twirling villain’ every damn time, get some actual villains who want to watch the world burn but who you are able to sympathize with. They kinda got it right w/ Dominguez, but his whole reasoning for wanting to ‘remake the world’ was convoluted at best. Plus, Trinity was still crowbarred into the mix somehow. The Tomb Raider franchise is very similar to the recent James Bond movies - similar plot, similar villains, similar mediocre results. Hell, even the supernatural creatures were essentially all the same in these last 3 games🙄

It's like the story in a Mario game, or an Action game. It's just to put the character in crazy situations. It's not meant to be that good. Not saying you can't critique it of course. Some of us are suckers for cliches, hell Dead fall is a shitty first person Indiana Jones knock off. Yet somehow, it is still VERY much enjoyed by many gamers and some even want a sequel to it including myself, mostly because the cliches are sooo cheesy I kinda want it to never end. Clichés turn some players on while others who constantly play the battlefield/cod kinda see it as a cute needed charm.
TBH, It’s only been a couple months since I’ve played this game and I barely remember any of it. In comparison to the first game, where I remember so much... Alex’s sacrifice, Father Mathias and Lara’s first kill. Shadow of the Tomb Raider just misses the impactful moments of the first game.
That's inevitable. In the first one, they were so focused to tell a good story that is worthy as a medium to show us how Lara became the tomb raider. The rest don't have to, so they don't try that much. That's just my guess.

Yes, I rolled my eyes when the enemies in the 2013 game were ancient zombie warriors shooting arrows and speaking in growls, and the main enemies in Rise of the Tomb Raider were... ...also ancient zombie warriors shooting arrows and speaking in growls. More variety and dinosaurs would be nice.
This was such a step down from the previous one. Samey environments, uninspired NPCs, weird logic gaps, boring tombs, and dumbed down gameplay. Hell, half the talent tree is pointless combat options that you'll barely use in the actual game, because there's 3-4 big fights and no wandering foes. I could understand that if the puzzles were more interesting, but they're completely straight-forward. You can pretty much put your brain on auto-pilot and do them. It also felt incredibly short, even when I did all the optional content. That's not even getting into the awful goddamned story.
Funny how playing the game on easy makes it easy. The entire complaint of the last two was the ridiculous amount of combat, turn the difficulty to max and turn your highlight vision off. People complain about things that are their own fault bc they can’t be arsed changing settings lmao
I especially hate that they locked certain outfit in the hidden city. And you have to wear specific outfit to talk to the locals. So you're forced to go back to campfire and change. I just "f**k it. Not doing this side quest".

Good review, but I'm a bit disappointed that you never mentioned the 90$ pre-order with season pass which gives you an otherwise unaccessible 7 challange dungeons... Pre-order only... And the fact that its marketed as an RTX title, and will only support RTX with a future patch. I own every Tomb Raider game, even the gold editions, but this onr seems like just a money grab...

the 7 tombs are not part of the pre-order. they are available for everyone through the season pass. The way the season pass works is for the next 7 months you get one new challenge tomb. each new tomb also comes with multiple narrative side missions. you will also get 7 new weapons, 7 new skills, and 7 new outfits. Also it's believed that next year we will see the definitive edition, or ultimate edition, or complete edition or whatever they will call it. The past two games have done this and therefore it's believed this 3rd one will as well with new bonus material to entice people who already own the game and all the dlc, basically people who payed $90 for everything, to purchase it again for about $50, or less, just to get bonus outfits, weapons and maybe one new tomb. they always do this. The first one, Tomb Raider, when it was re-released, they called it the Definitive edition and came with a few new things. Rise of the TR was an xbox one timed exclusive. When Sony finally got it a year later, they re-released it as the 20th year Celebration edition. It came with extra content too. So we'll be seeing a re-release in a year.
Exactly why I'm waiting until next year. These DLC scams have gotten so frustrating, I just wait until the Ultimate Edition and I'm much happier for it.

To me, the first Tomb Raider was 7/10 at most, not 9/10: too much of a third person shooter rather than an action/adventure, shallow tombs and enigms, too much handholding and visual indicators that show you were to jump and climb. The following two games are decisively 8/10, the reboot improved a lot, expanded its contents (particularly the amazing tombs), gave more depth to stealth and exploration.

I loved the game! and I am still trying to find all the tombs. first game i dont uninstall after the main story play through. my complaints: -No double guns (talked about in this video) -no short shorts option? common shorts are a staple of Lara's outfit ? why has that changed lately? was she raised in a convent ? hell even as a kid she does not wear shorts , what kid does not wear shorts when playing in the back of their house? it is not a perv thing, I just honestly don't know why there isn't an option to bring back the shorts .not even as a DLC, it is as if SquareEnix said "no you perv! you don't get to see Lara's legs!" and I know there are mods .. but common.. mods are complicated and not everyone has the know how to install complicated mods. -The option of "immersion" to have the locals speak in their local lenguage was done lazily. I speak Spanish, so it is infuriating that the Peruvian locals have Mexican accents and not only that but Peruvians that live in outskirts do not speak like polished high class Mexicans too.,.I am Mexican so it is not like I am Peruvian but I know Peruvians speak, and all the locals were doubed by the same two people (male/female) very mono tone and bad voice acting in general. the people speaking in Native lenguages are using the wrong lenguage. and you can't tell they struggle with reading the lenguage off a script because they speak very slow.. could they not had hired a native Nauatl speaker ?? it seems the back ground voices when you walk around are fluid from natives..Also the programers were worried about immersion by forcing you to wear native only clothing when running around Taitit but Lara never , not once speaks the local lenguage when the option of immersion is enabled.. why have that option if you are going to do it so half ass..also all the main characters speak only fluid English.. even the little prince and the creepy looking assistant.. how hard would it had been after spending millions making this game to hire a crew to properly word natives with correct nauatlh (again wrong dialect for the local incans) -Too many auto saves.. if you are playing the game in hard.. the auto saves should be far and less between , having an auto save every 10 seconds of the game makes the hard difficulty academic since you can just keep on trying that jump. In the original Tomb raider dying meant being sent back to the beginning of the level. That should be the case in the hardest difficulty. -limited crafting options.. this game would had been really cool if the crafting was a bit more elavorate..also.. there is no reason to switch bows or weapons, once you get the ones you like all the other bows and weapons collect dust since the differences get tinned out after upgrading them. -Bonus attached to certain clothing options:why ?? There are outfits that I like better, but I have to wear boring outfits for the bonuses... can there be a way to have the clothing separate from the bonuses so I can have Lara wear what I want? -No need to use focus mechanics.. Honestly ..it seems like a chore.. and the bonuses it provides makes the game too easy. even in the hardest difficulty.. maybe if less auto saves were offered it would have a more significant impact... -I know Lara kills people for the sake of gameplay and to make it fun.. but honestly she went from explorer with the random (I have to defend myself)human encounter to flat out special forces/Rambo killer in a few games.. Lara used to be an explorer. now she is psychopath killer.I mean all those random Incan/Aztec warriors that she kills are for the most part miss-guided by trinity and could be spared. in their mind they are just serving kukulklan.. Lara is leaving a lot of families without their father.. Anyhow I loved the game but sometimes I wonder who makes these decisions..

I like you videos but I hate this. I'm kinda tired of people reviewing things and not knowing shit about it. Take the time and do the research. Sure i'm coming off as smug and pompous but, what i'm finding is people consider you youtubers as "experts" on the subject when you're really not. You're just fans of gaming like anyway else. So maybe its being nitpicky Joe but, Crystal Dynamics didnt make the game. You mention it couple of times but, the reason the vibe is so different is Eidos Montreal made this game and Crystal Dynamics was only there fore consulting. Also you mention the gaming being so heavy on action and combat yet, I feel like its the biggest weakness is how unaction packed the game actually is compared to how intense rise was. I also find Rise to be way better than the original.
I wrote this about 10 minutes after the review and never posted it and I'd like to say thank you for putting out a correction. It adds a huge part to your credibility. I like that you unlike other people own up to shit and it makes me respect you a lot more.

The ending to this game was so drawn out and boring, with it feeling pretty much the same as the first. Story was poor and after Spiderman the facial animation and lip syncing were terrible. Disappointing shit.
Forget which review I heard it on, but someone was saying that they really hope that the DLC for this game is just a campaign of "Here's the route Jonah took" and it's just him standing in elevators or taking some stairs. :^)

This game was kinda dumb with how Jonah was ALWAYS just around the corner for Lara somehow. Lara at one point ends up in the jungle all alone with no weapons and has to sneak her way to an oil refinery, taking down dozens of men and even going on a killing spree when she thinks Jonah is dead.
Then when she's done, standing in the mud and rain, he just calmly walks up to her, almost like he's saying "what's up, Lara, why you so sad?"
And he never shut the fuck up bro like he was the cutscene every 2 fucking seconds

The creatures were by far the most intriguing aspect of the story. They genuinely creeped me tf out. I got serious decent vibes in that section. I wanted to know more. With this trilogy being done I hope to see more tomb raider in the future. Maybe something that is a little closer to its roots. Not precisely the same but it would be nice to see classic fearless Lara back again.

Yes I loved the creatures and their lore really intriguing stuff that sadly was only a little bit explored. I think Andres Lopez and his expedition are even more intriguing but they only flesh it out in about somewhat in the documents you collect and it’s barely mentioned in the story. Also they make references to the real life Percy Fawcett in documents and created a fictional story for him which I thought was really creative. The designers really put a lot of world building behind this game but they probably should have put a little more of that passion and thoughtfulness into the main story as well.

To be fair, there are a lot of games worth reviewing coming out. You don’t have that in the summer.
I can't believe that they still refuse to give Lara her Dual pistols back ans still try to push this bow and arrow shtick, it's like making a Robin Hood movie where he never uses his bow and just runs around and fights with a bamboo staff instead and the filmmakers try to pretend that it's his new iconic weapon. And you can't claim that a bow is a more realistic option, in real life history bows were swapped for pistols for a good reason.
I don’t understand what the obsession with the dual pistols is. If she was going to use them, she would have carried them from the first reboot game onwards, where she used them in a QTE. It should be clear from that point that the developers had no intention of having them ever becoming the iconic version of this version. I dint see what using them has got to do with being angry either, or what this “defining”moment is supposed to be about.

That's cause it dtiched its unique identity as a platforming series whilst doing nothing new or outstanding to even justify it. It'll be forgotten cause it's just trying to desperately be like other games. It's trying to be something it's not. The series is a shadow of its former self and yes in the long run it's going to slowly die off as people begin to realise that the developer's making these games are just exploiting current marketable trends.

Also the puzzles are fucking boring and glitching. You get no real sense of accomplishment. Most of the time you're like "yeat it is a tomb raider game but this shit is just insane". Also most of the puzzles made no sense. Like an entrance covered in wood and you have to light it up to burn. To burn it you need to provide oil there via some weird contraption. First of all why can't I use fire arrows to light up the oil? xD and second of all this "burn the wood entrance" makes no goddamn sense. And they even have some immersion options in the settings and then there is this shit which breaks it completely.

To be fair...would she carry all those weapons around to EVERY location? Like if I survived the first game I wouldn't just keep all those weapons on my person at all times. Usually she is thrust into situations where she loses her equipment. In this one their plane crashes and she only finds her bow I believe. So it makes sense.
G-Whiz she would realize shes always thrown into these situations somehow and start carrying all these weapons lol.

I just felt like if they maintained that she didn't carry the 2 pistols in the game, at least near the end they could've added a scene where she picks them up, not specifically those iconic pistols, just any dual pistols that she gets, maybe Jonah throws one and she catches it and you get to play her like she's at her most OP for a short time.
AngelKikoken I agree. Those double pistols are one of the most iconic aspects of the character and to not be able to use them at least once for combat in the new trilogy sucks. Not giving fans the ability to play the rebooted version of Lara in any of her old costumes (and instead only puts in the old pixel skins that says they are only fashion over function 🙄) or her dual pistols takes us away the icon we know and love from the beginning.
C'mon Joe, we live in a society!!! ...duel pistols are "iconic" like you said, so in 2018 they can't just be given away in a paid game. Anything iconic is to be sold as DLC :D

I'm not speaking to the quality of his reviews, although he had many good ones, but am speaking to the reviews in general seeing as his reviews started dipping in uploads. I understood his break at first, but after a couple years he just seemed like he didn't want to do it anymore and was burnt out. Glad he's finding his stride again but post-2012 he started slacking.

@Reloaded Past if you enjoyed the first two, you should have no problem playing this one. I got the definitive edition on sale and it was so worth it. You spend more time exploring than combat for sure but I feel it makes the world lore and actual history way better. I watch reviews of games I've finished so as to broaden my knowledge and opinion on them, and about games I expect not to like. This has always worked for me.
My favorite part about these reboot games is seeing Lara squeeze through very tight narrow passages and knowing that the old-school Lara Croft had a couple...features... that meant she could never get through a passage like that.
Currently playing Rise of the Tomb raider. Kinda was hoping that they would move beyond the plot force of "MY DAD FOUND SOMETHING THEREFORE I MUST FIND IT" thing that the first game had. Here's a problem I noticed. They made her a "legend" of some sort. Yeah, the bad guys and the locals knows the name "Lara Croft the tomb raider". "Be careful, she's dangerous," says a bad guys , "Lara croft the treasure hunter" - the kids knows her name.
And yet I play as her and she's still "becoming" the tomb raider.
It is bad. Rise's story is supremely stupid and it can't even play out the cliches in an interesting way.

Good point, @Hunter Hagelin. Laura is pronounced Lo-rah or even Lo-ruh, so with the 'u' missing from Lara it is Lah-rah. Also, British people seem to say it more smoothly with their accents where as others seem to always call her Laura.
I find it unbelievable that he is still following Lara around after nearly dying in the last game. It isn't like they are childhood friends. Seems incredibly fake and forced.

The relics are in this game where you have to turn it around to get more story. They changed it so when you picked it up it doesnt automatically go to the screen which sucks because people will miss it. When you pick it up you have like 3 seconds to hit the option button to look at the relic

No basically yh kulkulkan is a destroyer god he gives you visions so that you can pursue ur dreams but instead if you do pursue it will destroy the world "remake it" domimguez tried to do it and he became the vessel for kulkulkan so he had some powers when lara kept stabbing him with the knife that power got transferred to her. And when she died she killed the kulkulan god as he was inside her not lara if you know what I mean so she didn't die. The ritual was to sacrifice the destroyer god.
The funny thing is Lara does get her double guns - during the first game! And it's somewhat easy to miss, at least I missed it on my first playthrough. It happens during the boss fight where you kill Mathias (or whatever his name was). There is a quicktime event where you pull your own pistol and then steal his from his belt and go to town with double guns. But it's very short and basically embedded in a cinematic/QTE so I guess it was easy to miss. But I think it was somehow meant to rationalize why she uses 2 guns.

The first reboot game actually made it more epic as Lara actually used iconic dual pistols in the final boss fight. Meanwhile none of this actually fully implemented both in RIse & Shadow. Very confusing & a missed opportunity. Everything is Bow & Arrow fetish now.
I think if the devs really want that stealth predator focus style for Lara, than imo the dual pistols could be implemented as special move (high damage) with a gauge filled with kills to balance things out. Maybe even some slow mo action system like Max Payne. With this in mind, maybe the devs able to put more faster, dangerous, & big health mini boss or staged bosses overall.
Overall, definitely another formulaic & little improvements sequel, which is very common in COD & Ubisoft games like AC & Far Cry series.

I think the first one was the best followed closely by the second one. The third one just had a completely uninteresting story.
Edit: I recently started playing the series again and tried Shadow after about a year since the last time i played it and realized that this game is actually pretty damn good with some epic horror elements that make the game pretty scary as well. My initial statement here about Shadow was way off base lol.
2013 and Rise are esquivalent in quality. Shadow is WAY worse than the first two.

So far I'm about 1/5 I think of the way through rise and TR was pretty cool I rly enjoyed it and for 2013 was way ahead of it's time. Rise so far has me intregued and does a lot for qol and I like the upgrades tied to hunting more and the story seems interesting I hope they continue the franchise with this Lara but continue to innovate, i feel like it can be hard to keep these games fresh as they tend to have the same weapons and coming up with new interesting puzzles can also be a challenge so they should take their time maybe 3-5 years from shadow for Dev time also where TF is the classic Lara outfits come on crystal shouldn't have to mod that sht fr LoL

I liked Rise the most out of the series. The first one was great, I just like Rise a lot because of the diversity of the environments within the game. But Shadow was definitely a let down in terms of feel, mechanics, story, and progression.

I also think that on the reboot and rise she had more expression in her face and in her voice acting. I also don't get that she can leap and jump massive crevasses yet she can't always jump up and grab a ledge 2 foot above her.

I bought Rise a couple of days ago on Steam for 12€ with all dlc's included I believe, no regrets at all...the game runs beautifully on my GTX1050ti, actually much better than TR2013, probably better optimization I guess, and the game looks beautifull and plays even better ! I just don't like the fact that you don't get some essential gear for exploring early on, but gotta live with that...Shadow has only for just a little bit over a month been released and it is already on sale for 40€ :D I'll wait until it drops under 15€ probably.

I wouldn't say it evened out (I just beat the game). Of course still talking comparatively to Tomb Raider 2013 - and it's only fair to compare the body count to 2013, because the Reboot takes place on a remote island. But just to give "Shadow..." a sporting chance I'll replay it on "easy" and do the math.
Oh, and the game is bugged, can't complete 100% even though all regions on the map say I found everything.
The jungle setting is beautiful! The attention to detail in the environmental design is intricate and lovingly crafted. Also love how cinematic it is from cutscene transitions to when Lara climbs through/under obstacles. I really enjoyed the platforming and how the descriptions for the collectables are fully voice acted. On the other hand, the menu design is horribly confusing and the shooting mechanics are some of the worst I’ve ever experienced.

Fair review, Though i enjoy the 2 previous installments more, this one was a good overall game. Some things that bothered me were the reuse of character models like crazy, how crafting the outfits and stuff pretty much was useless because you were forced to wear a specific outfit for most of, if not 90% of the game. The action was dropped down quite a bit from the previous ones rendering the weapon upgrades kind of useless for the majority of the game. The skill tree felt empty (while being huge) and a lot of skills were undesirable. Some of the good ones were pushed onto the outfits. Overall it was decent, and a fair 7/10. As for the dual pistols, one of the designers or directors said that this is the new Lara and was to be associated with her bow.

Meh, I liked first game of new trilogy because I expected them to show us how Lara became Tomb Rider we knew from older games- so I was very pleased to see her as pretty much a girl that had to start killing, murdering, looting and survive in extreme conditions in first game. I expected them to develop that in next 2 till in 3rd game (Shadow) she would finally become cocky, bad ass, little cynical Tomb Rider we knew from old games. I mean - if you killed over 100 people in the time of like what- 3 years - it would change anyone. And many times you didn't kill them in clean ways..... But they play safe card and she is still annoying whiny brat and doesn't seem mature at all and her being suddenly all emotional in Shadow after murdering another 30/40 human beings is just not well put for me. It doesn't make sense. Like after killing 20 people with FUCKING STABING THEM IN CHEST while looking in their eyes- she is suddenly all excited about some old mural/cave like little girl or is concerned about some ancient tribe killing others while she is pretty much walking terminator/assassin at this point. Also I fully expected Jonah to die in Shadow as maybe some final breaking point for her vs Trinity where she goes on rampage or something. But now, he survived and didn't serve any purpose in story.
Overall- I thought 1st game was solid 9/10 for me (becasue what I expected next). Now it's 8/10 as the idea from it was totally not used to full potential. Second game (which I totally forgot what was going on...) is like 7/10 and Shadow is 6/10 for me.

The writing, plot-wise, isn't really up to snuff compared to say Uncharted, or dare I say, Indy. And the dialogue got kind of a cringey feel to it, like it's way too dead pan for its own good. There's gotta be some humorous moments thrown in once in awhile to lighten up the mood, or these types of over-the-top-storylines get ridiculous fast. Both Uncharted and Indy does this very well.
I think the first modern TR was up to par with Uncharted, I really really liked it. Second one, meh, it was ok. Haven't played this one yet.
The dialogue in the side missions was awful. I was so glad I realized there was a way to skip it.

Rise was superior to the first one in every way for me, one of my best games of 2016 only escaping the no.1 slot because of Dark Souls 3.
I really didn't care for rise at all maybe it was the setting or the plot but something just didn't click with me, i really loved the first game though.
First game was far better, i was able to 100% progress on it. With Rise, the story is weak and the collectibles just didn't have the charm that the first one did (and they all had generic voice narration and none of the thoughts of Lara about them which made them even less interesting). Also they changed her face again, which people didn't really want after seeing her face in the first game.
Also the side characters had no depth except for relations (like her step-mom Ana) and some plot twists were done in the story so early that i was often wondering if the story is short.
We all have our opinions. I found all 3 great, and this the best of them all.

I'm about 10 hours into this game and I can say that I love it. Not often will I buy a game at full price but I'm really glad I did. From the beautiful visuals to the fun puzzles, this is a really well crafted game. Plus the different difficulty modes where you can turn off the white climbing markers gives the game some extra depth for exploration. You have to be looking for ways to navigate the environment instead of the game just telling you. This game isn't as good as Uncharted 4 but it comes very close.

Stop making Trinity the ‘mustache twirling villain’ every damn time, get some actual villains who want to watch the world burn but who you are able to sympathize with. They kinda got it right w/ Dominguez, but his whole reasoning for wanting to ‘remake the world’ was convoluted at best. Plus, Trinity was still crowbarred into the mix somehow. The Tomb Raider franchise is very similar to the recent James Bond movies - similar plot, similar villains, similar mediocre results. Hell, even the supernatural creatures were essentially all the same in these last 3 games🙄

Some of us are suckers for cliches, hell Dead fall is a shitty first person Indiana Jones knock off. Yet somehow, it is still VERY much enjoyed by many gamers and some even want a sequel to it including myself, mostly because the cliches are sooo cheesy I kinda want it to never end. Clichés turn some players on while others who constantly play the battlefield/cod kinda see it as a cute needed charm.
TBH, It’s only been a couple months since I’ve played this game and I barely remember any of it. In comparison to the first game, where I remember so much... Alex’s sacrifice, Father Mathias and Lara’s first kill. Shadow of the Tomb Raider just misses the impactful moments of the first game.
That's inevitable. In the first one, they were so focused to tell a good story that is worthy as a medium to show us how Lara became the tomb raider. The rest don't have to, so they don't try that much. That's just my guess.

This was such a step down from the previous one. Samey environments, uninspired NPCs, weird logic gaps, boring tombs, and dumbed down gameplay.
Hell, half the talent tree is pointless combat options that you'll barely use in the actual game, because there's 3-4 big fights and no wandering foes. I could understand that if the puzzles were more interesting, but they're completely straight-forward. You can pretty much put your brain on auto-pilot and do them.
It also felt incredibly short, even when I did all the optional content. That's not even getting into the awful goddamned story.

I especially hate that they locked certain outfit in the hidden city. And you have to wear specific outfit to talk to the locals. So you're forced to go back to campfire and change. I just "f**k it. Not doing this side quest".

Good review, but I'm a bit disappointed that you never mentioned the 90$ pre-order with season pass which gives you an otherwise unaccessible 7 challange dungeons... Pre-order only... And the fact that its marketed as an RTX title, and will only support RTX with a future patch. I own every Tomb Raider game, even the gold editions, but this onr seems like just a money grab...

@@bgill7475 as far as I know, and even now after some research, I can't find any proof of your statement. It might change in the future, but right now if you haven't pre-ordered, you don't have the 7 challange dungeons.
the 7 tombs are not part of the pre-order. they are available for everyone through the season pass.
The way the season pass works is for the next 7 months you get one new challenge tomb. each new tomb also comes with multiple narrative side missions. you will also get 7 new weapons, 7 new skills, and 7 new outfits. Also it's believed that next year we will see the definitive edition, or ultimate edition, or complete edition or whatever they will call it. The past two games have done this and therefore it's believed this 3rd one will as well with new bonus material to entice people who already own the game and all the dlc, basically people who payed $90 for everything, to purchase it again for about $50, or less, just to get bonus outfits, weapons and maybe one new tomb. they always do this. The first one, Tomb Raider, when it was re-released, they called it the Definitive edition and came with a few new things. Rise of the TR was an xbox one timed exclusive. When Sony finally got it a year later, they re-released it as the 20th year Celebration edition. It came with extra content too. So we'll be seeing a re-release in a year.

@@randomfools808 I haven't played through the trilogy yet. Still waiting to get a powerful pc to even run the game salivating to stare on her biceps so I'm not to eager to agree to an opinion, yet. I'm still hoping they turn it into a Spec Ops: The Line situation.
To me, the first Tomb Raider was 7/10 at most, not 9/10: too much of a third person shooter rather than an action/adventure, shallow tombs and enigms, too much handholding and visual indicators that show you were to jump and climb. The following two games are decisively 8/10, the reboot improved a lot, expanded its contents (particularly the amazing tombs), gave more depth to stealth and exploration.

I loved the game! and I am still trying to find all the tombs. first game i dont uninstall after the main story play through.
my complaints:
-No double guns (talked about in this video)
-no short shorts option? common shorts are a staple of Lara's outfit ? why has that changed lately? was she raised in a convent ? hell even as a kid she does not wear shorts , what kid does not wear shorts when playing in the back of their house? it is not a perv thing, I just honestly don't know why there isn't an option to bring back the shorts .not even as a DLC, it is as if SquareEnix said "no you perv! you don't get to see Lara's legs!" and I know there are mods .. but common.. mods are complicated and not everyone has the know how to install complicated mods.
-The option of "immersion" to have the locals speak in their local lenguage was done lazily. I speak Spanish, so it is infuriating that the Peruvian locals have Mexican accents and not only that but Peruvians that live in outskirts do not speak like polished high class Mexicans too.,.I am Mexican so it is not like I am Peruvian but I know Peruvians speak, and all the locals were doubed by the same two people (male/female) very mono tone and bad voice acting in general. the people speaking in Native lenguages are using the wrong lenguage. and you can't tell they struggle with reading the lenguage off a script because they speak very slow.. could they not had hired a native Nauatl speaker ?? it seems the back ground voices when you walk around are fluid from natives..Also the programers were worried about immersion by forcing you to wear native only clothing when running around Taitit but Lara never , not once speaks the local lenguage when the option of immersion is enabled.. why have that option if you are going to do it so half ass..also all the main characters speak only fluid English.. even the little prince and the creepy looking assistant.. how hard would it had been after spending millions making this game to hire a crew to properly word natives with correct nauatlh (again wrong dialect for the local incans)
-Too many auto saves.. if you are playing the game in hard.. the auto saves should be far and less between , having an auto save every 10 seconds of the game makes the hard difficulty academic since you can just keep on trying that jump. In the original Tomb raider dying meant being sent back to the beginning of the level. That should be the case in the hardest difficulty.
-limited crafting options.. this game would had been really cool if the crafting was a bit more elavorate..also.. there is no reason to switch bows or weapons, once you get the ones you like all the other bows and weapons collect dust since the differences get tinned out after upgrading them.
-Bonus attached to certain clothing options:why ?? There are outfits that I like better, but I have to wear boring outfits for the bonuses... can there be a way to have the clothing separate from the bonuses so I can have Lara wear what I want?
-No need to use focus mechanics.. Honestly ..it seems like a chore.. and the bonuses it provides makes the game too easy. even in the hardest difficulty.. maybe if less auto saves were offered it would have a more significant impact...
-I know Lara kills people for the sake of gameplay and to make it fun.. but honestly she went from explorer with the random (I have to defend myself)human encounter to flat out special forces/Rambo killer in a few games.. Lara used to be an explorer. now she is psychopath killer.I mean all those random Incan/Aztec warriors that she kills are for the most part miss-guided by trinity and could be spared. in their mind they are just serving kukulklan.. Lara is leaving a lot of families without their father..
Anyhow I loved the game but sometimes I wonder who makes these decisions..
And I wish there were female enemies to fight cuz killing the dudes is kinda getting boring just saying
