    One of the biggest reasons to still use this phone in 2022 is the custom ROM support. Tons of developers chose to support this phone because of its unique set of features so if you want up-to-date Android features and security patches then you have way more options than basically any other 4+ year old Android smartphone.
    Personally I use iodéOS, which is comparable to CalyxOS in its blend of privacy and functionality. With the Note 9 being one of the main devices iodé support, I will likely be using it for a couple of more years at least and hit the 5 year goal I set when I bought it.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Given that the note 9 got a patch/update only a couple months ago I am not quite at the custom ROM stage yet - but I'm definitely saving your comment so I can give it a shot once it stops getting updates.

      @@jael4132 I'd say the stock Samsung ROM was less stable to be honest. Way more feature bloat so my phone would slow down/hang/overheat more often. iodéOS runs a lot cooler and is a faster and smoother experience overall.

    There is absolutely no reason for Samsung to call their ultra phones ultra when they don't pack ultra features including, headphone jack, micro SD, iris scanner, heart rate monitor, charger in box, headphones, and a little appreciation towards their customers.

But after having had the entire Note series, up to the 20 Ultra and the last of the S range, I am even more convinced that the Note9 today is still the most complete phone ever made.

    My note 9's screen broke some time after the beginning of lock down. It was a blessing in disguise cause It forced me to take a look at just how stupid the phone market got. To the point that last year I decided to get the screen fixed. The fix cost me the same as a modern medium-tier phone and they also gave it a new battery. Phone was like new last year and it's quite great at the moment. Also, I've had it exposed to quite a bit of water and it didn't seem to have any issues in that regard. I plan to continue using this one for another 3 years at least.

    I couldn't agree more! I bought my note 9 in 2018 and have never regretted it! My battery still lasts all day. I've never had it out of a case and have always kept screen protectors on it. I love the Note 9. It's the best phone I've ever had. The only thing I've had to replace is the S-Pen. I used it a lot and wore out the clicker device on one. Then I lost the replacement and had to get a new one again. The S-Pen is the main reason I bought the note in the first place. I have recently been looking into the S22 Ultra but don't see anything compelling enough to replace my Note 9 yet.

      I feel the same. Maybe if the s22 ultra gets an insane discount when the s23 lineup is announced I'll consider one, but then of course we will have to see if the next generation of phones continues with the "remove features" trend or if they correct course and get back to giving the people what they want.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I upgraded to the fold 4 and honestly, aside from the better cpu and higher refresh rate, it doesn't feel like an upgrade, more of a sidegrade.
      The note 9 is still in use as my phone for the bath, and I often pop my sim in it when I'm going out somewhere I don't want to risk my folding phone.
      I went back to the note 9 for a week while the screen protector on my fold got replaced and aside from some weird issues with TH-cam app not showing an image after being minimized, and poor gaming performance, I found the note 9 still holds up.
      If I could just upgrade the cpu and add more memory the note 9 would still be the perfect phone. -Stac

    I have the 128gb version with 128gb SD card. It is definitely enough. I love all of its features (and it has a lot of them lol). The only features i can remember that this phone doesn't have is IR blaster, which is kinda shame, but i'm ok with it.
    For me, there are two features i definitely want on my next phone are stylus and 960fps superslowmo. SD card reader, Iris scan, audio jack, etc. are just cherry on top. I hate to say it but i doubt there will ever be this good smartphone again. It isn't economical: people would stick with it and would not buy anything new for years.
    Meaning people who have note 9 will probably keep it as long as it is working.

    I have a Note 9 and upgraded to the s23 ultra, while the zoom lens on s23 is awesome, it is not used as much as the main camera. When comparing the main camera, I still find the Note 9 to still be quite superior to s23 ultra because s23 ultra has these strange halos and blurry outlines on objects in close proximity but the Note 9 is still crystal clear. I think the s23 ultra main camera is trying to focus on certain points too much but it makes the rest of the view blurred out too much also, and there is some strange programming being applied to the final image as well that I cannot seem to adjust. Overall I prefer the Note 9 and this impacts my work since I use the camera to take a lot of images for reports (close ups of faulty equipment and rusted surfaces). So I take my Note 9 with me to the job sites for only taking the pictures because the s23 ultra just cannot take the same level of detail of the photos unfortunately. This was a real disappointment for me, I thought the s23 would at least have the same lens or better than Note 9 with the added on zooms but I was mistaken.

    I'm still using my Note 9 in Feb-24 and I love it and don't want to stop using it. Personally, it annoys me that Samsung has withdrawn software support after just 4 years - that's not a long time in my book for something that cost me over £1000 and still works perfectly well, I'm not part of the throw away society and I care about waste and the environment so it irks me that Samsung are forcing my hand. I think Samsung should support their flagship phones for much longer - it should be part of the service at these price points - I'm not an Apple fan but if that what Apple offer, Samsung should be doing the same.

And seriously after 5yrs of using this phone (and needing to find a replacement for the battery and figuring out the yellowing of the screen), it still serves it's purpose. I will say my battery life is aweful. Im not sure how it was when it was new, but my phone was brand new quality, even no screen burn when i got it 6 months ago. I am going to see how hard it is to change this battery, which im sure is worse than I want but I used to repair phones and replace screens, just havent done a "Newer" Note.

      Stacy here: I would be careful if you watched those videos on TH-cam due to TH-cam's aggressive compression it won't be an accurate representation. I picked up a fold 4 last year and started recording my F1 videos on it and the improvement in quality is quite noticeable over the note 9, so much so that my gf at the time actually asked me if I got a new camera the first time I made a video with the new phone.
      The newer Samsung phones have better on-device processing and I've noticed they do a better job especially if you have studio lights. My note 9 freaks out when there's too much light, for example.
      The note 9 is still incredible value, but in an objective comparison it falls behind new phones, that's just technology improving over time and inevitable. Where the note 9 wins is in the feature-set. It is still the most feature-rich phone ever released.

And last month after t-mobile platform change (no more 2G) - Mint cannot get my high speed 4G LTE to work on this phone..After about 3 years of great service, it was simply turned off late at night while using to watch Dan Bongino.. Many many hours of calling and adjusting network setting-still not working.. Funny my older Galaxy S7 does connect 4G-LTE with the network settings being tweaked on this prepaid mint account.. I bought a samsung galaxy note 9 in 2019, now it's the end of 2023, my charging port doesn't work (I charge it through a power bank with the possibility of wireless charging), the back cover is broken, it's completely covered in scratches, the battery holds 2-3 hours of screen time and that's everything does not make me buy a new phone. but lately the upper speaker has started to feel bad and I often can't hear the interlocutor well, and when listening to media content it stopped working altogether....
    start looking to buy a replacement and for a whole year I've been looking, waiting.. and can't find a phone worth my upgrade.
    I think between such phones as: sony xperia 1 iv, samsung galaxy s23, iphone 13 pro. in my country, the price at which you can buy these phones is about the same for me. I still think I'll stick with Sony, because compared to other phones, I like it the most, but on the other hand, it's not a bad option for an iPhone, but I'm not sure that iOS will suit me as an operating system. samsung galaxy s23 is simply one of the most affordable non-stressful options for me after the note 9, but a rather boring option. Heck, one of the reasons it is still my favourite phone because the overall brightness of regular photo taking is better to me than some newer phones which make the lots of photos too overexposed for my sensitive eyes. Heck, the Note 9's photo quality overall beats some DLSR cameras photo quality overall. I like to take a lot of photos in the Pro Mode with f2.4 on without RAW mode which takes the quality to being next level for a phone first came out in 2018. I also make sure my Note 9's camera, which ever one I use, is very clean before taking photos or videos. I also love that it has a headphone jack for my favourite headphones which are the M40X headphones. Going from a GS7 to a Note 9 was a huge upgrade for me anyways. Heck, it even beats my iPod Touch 6's speed overall when it's in power saving mode which I like to use when the phone battery is low or if I put on some music on a long road trip.

    Agree still using the note9 despite trying a few new flagships. Its bullet proof, the s range scratch taking them out of the box, still all new features i need. Wireless charge, waterproof, headphone jack, mem expansion card slot. And the physical fingerprint reader is great. Throw in the pen. • @lilPopper
    @lilPopper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nothing wrong with using the Note 9 now. It has everything you could possibly need and not have to worry about buying accessories like a dongle -- because the phone still has a headphone jack. Having a micro SD slot to expand the storage means you don't have to buy a USB flash drive with OTG. Having the physical finger print reader on the back is not only faster than the under display scanners, but also a convenient tool for drop down notifications.
    The only reason why I didn't get the Note 9 is because I realised that when I was using my Note 3, I was seldom using my S-Pen. So when it was time to upgrade, I opted for the Galaxy S9+. And to this day, I have no stress using it because it meets my needs. When the time to upgrade again arrives, I am seriously gonna look into the older devices, because I feel that new hardware in phones went backwards and overprice them.

    I used the shit out of this phone for 3 years. I still had 85% battery capacity. Only stopped daily driving it when a super aggresive offer came in for the Fold 3 where I got a heap for my old iPhone for work. The Fold is the best tech I've ever paid for. Really the next big step forward. However the Note 9 was a beast. It never once crashed, froze or stuttered. The display 5 years later is still insanely good. I decided to hold onto it because the trade in money for it simply would not provide enough loot to replace it with something equal or better. My only gripe with the phone as a daily was the weight. With a case it really feld like a brick after holding my buddy's Note 10 which felt like a feather. And my secondly only gripe is that I had to replace the tempered glass protector over a dozen times over the 3 years with those pricey White Stone UV screen protectors. One time I caught the subway turnstile with my phone in my jacket pocket and it cracked the screen protector the day after replacing the screen protector. Eventually I started buying these generic brand versions of UV tempered glass protectors and they weren't any worse and much cheaper. I use the Note 9 as my default Dex device paired via type C hub with a 15.5" OLED portable 1080p monitor for $190 USD (no touch screen though). The monitor is the ultimate accessory for an old Note 9 you just need a decent mouse and good LED keyboard. Just make sure once Dex is launched go into the Dex settings while in Dex mode and under "Dex Settings" go to Mouse and Trackpad and change the position so that it recognizes if the Note is on the left or right of the external display. That way the mouse will move seamlessly between the phone and the monitor. Also cool for the external Dex monitor, you can use Zoom turning the Note 9 around to act as your webcam while you see the Zoom call on the external monitor. No need to use the poorer selfie camera.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector

      Similar here! Got a fold 4 for basically half price and also find the weight to be a struggle. My wrists hurt for the first few weeks while they adjusted to it.
      Still use the note 9 ALL the time. In the shower or bath, to make community posts and shorts (TH-cam app is absurdly limited on folds) and also when I'm going somewhere I don't want to risk my expensive phone I pop my sim into the note 9.
      It's a shame they don't make em like they used to. The note 9 was perfect (except for the bixby button being below the volume down button).

      Wasn't out when I made this video and I've been very interested but so far it hasn't been available in Canada, and there are concerns that without VoLTE it won't be able to make phone calls when Canadian providers shut down 3g services soon.
