    Amazing to think how all those details in the cockpit came to be invented, designed and refined over such a short amount of time. And then someone had to crawl in the thing and test it, let alone fly it into combat. Kudos to Airfix for putting that level of detail in. Really is a shame that so much won't be seen once it's fully assembled. Well done, and thanks for sharing the mistakes any of us would make to make it easier to get it right.

    You are more of an inspiration than those outstanding amazing modelling channels where everything looks like a work of art. They put me off building anything but you inspire because if Gary can do it then there is hope for me. Santa MAY be bringing me a ‘Katy’ because of your build videos, you have tempted me to give modelling another go.

    Great video - thanks! My boys bought me this for Christmas! I was a bit overwhelmed to say the least! I have not made an Airfix model now for a few years since my lads were wee but I made the original Mk1 back in the 70s. I later converted this to Mk5 but it got lost somewhere during our various house moves (as did a lot of the models!) not to mention my wife's "helpful" dusting! Fortunately they thought to buy me a fair selection of paints / adhesives / brushes so I should be able to make a good effort. Your videos have inspired me - thanks.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      You've raised your boys well if this is what they buy for you! It is intimidating at first but if you think of the bits as sub-assemblies then do each of them bit by bit then the kit does make a lot of sense and is far less scary! The sprue layout is very good and the production is excellent. Just make sure you look carefully at the instructions and test fit everything where you can! I'm really enjoying it.

    Lovely looking build so far Gary, thank you for showing the mistakes as well, it just shows how easy it is to get one tiny thing wrong which then leads to problems further on in the build.
    Great to see the original compass from the spitfire.
    Always amazes me when watching the spitfires at Duxford that have been rebuilt from remnants found buried on beaches etc. The fact that they get them airworthy again is testament to what brilliant engineers we have in this country.

    Coming along nicely, Gary. You've done the instrument panel beautifully. Just being a little pedantic, but I see that the flap lever on the panel (top left hand corner, to the left of the red data placards,) appears to have been molded, correctly, in the 'up' position, so strictly speaking, you have to model your kit with flaps 'up' to be correct.
    For those wishing to model flaps 'down', the molded lever has to be shaved off and repositioned in the opposite direction.
    My father flew Spitfires and he said flaps were always put back in the 'up' position after landing at the earliest opportunity. In addition, the flap positions were either 'up' or 'down'. There was no intermediate position.
    Hope this helps.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark it helps enormously and I will attend to it. The comment about flap selection reminded me that the lack of intermediate position was an issue on late Seafires, as I have mentioned before. To give about 15 degrees of flap for take-off at heavy load, the pilot selected flap down, a small wooden chock was held in place then the flaps selected up - the chock providing the required degree of flap. On take off, stable climb, gear up then a quick cycle of "down and up" on the flap lever dumped the chock. Barmy.

      @markfranks1329 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff Hey Gary, thank you so much for your prompt response. Gosh, I was completely unaware that they resorted to such measures in the FAA regarding Seafires. Wonderful stuff. My father, who was RAF always had great respect for naval pilots as when landing, his airstrip stayed perfectly still and certainly didn't have a tendency to pitch or roll!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markfranks1329 another thing I read about in "They Gave Me a Seafire" was the loss of many aircraft going off the end of the runways - the Spitfire was designed for grass strips which help with the braking - on concrete the brakes got no help and would fade before stopping the aircraft! But I would say that anyone who got into one of these things and took them to face an enemy was a bloody hero. Full stop.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the new tool Airfix Mosquito is a nice kit to make, fairly straightforward but with some nice details. The Dornier 17 is very good - just one little faff with the cockpit (it's in my video!!!) but the result is very good. The Beaufort is maybe a little fiddly if you're very new to the hobby, only because of the glazed nose, but really not bad at all. I'm probably making the He111 in the new year. The Wellington is lovely, even tells you which bits are going to be hidden away so are optional extras!

    Good work Gary, especially the cautionary tale of the seat positioning.
    I'll make two observations, first the kit, the tab for the air bottles would have been better in a recess in the cockpit side rarther than a slot right through which shows unnecessarily from the outside.
    Second. in your build, I do not know what colour the seat pan should be so you might be right but the pilot sits on the parachute so the seat pan need not be leathered. Should the colour be green or black?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      This did cross my mind, as I've never sat on a leather seat in any RAF plane. I'll have to ask after the holidays...

    • @emmabird9745
      @emmabird9745 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff Further update, I was looking through Spitfire bible "Spitfire the History" by Morgan and Shacklady to see if there was a good picture of the seat but unfortunately not. Spec F37/30 does specify grey/green for the interior of the cockpit (excluding the instrument panel). I assume the parachute would cause quite a bit of wear and tear so light alloy would be vissible. However, I remembered that you are building a PR version. In the book there is quite a bit on PR versions (like a refueling port in the underside leading edge between ribs 19 and 20 and a lot of hand access ports under the LE for rivetting for the fuel tank). I don't remember which version you are building but in the cockpit build you should have had a type 35 camera controller roughly where the gun sight would have been and depending on version another control box by the pilots left knee. The shutter button appears to be on the top of the throttle lever. The three levers on the throttle are throttle, mixture and proppeler pitch.
      Incidentally, one of the specifications F5/34 requires adjustment of the seat (up and down) and the rudder pedals (fore and aft) by up to 4 inches in flight which explains the lever on the right of the seat pan.
      Hope that helps.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      My one is an FR.IX, so doesn't have the Type 35 camera control (it still has the gun sights as it is armed) - there would I guess have been the controller on the lower left of the cockpit - basically an "on/off" switch with fuses maybe - for the single F24 camera behind the cockpit. From memory the Type 35 was all about the vertical cameras, setting altitude and speed so the system could make exposures at appropriate intervals for proper overlap of the frames as only the central third or so was at the best possible resolution for the lens. Maybe by the time of the F.IX they were using the synthetic bonded paper seats, they appear to be all brown (rather than leather) - in which case maybe the sides should be brown also?
      The difficulty is in finding contemporary images that show this, as restorations can be quite variable!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry "synthetic resin-bonded paper", SRBP seats...

    • @emmabird9745
      @emmabird9745 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff So you have the oblique camera then (a bit like the PR in "A Bridge too Far"). If you have guns, you don't have LE tanks either. I knew about the aerolite spitfire but not about cardboard seats.
      Going off on atangent, I looked at Airfix site yesterday and was amased just what a small range they have, and whilst they have the bomber service kit there are no figures. What do you use for figures in diaramas? Wheres the ground crew to load the bombs?
