    What a terrific rendering of a Merlin! That is going to look stunning after painting. Once again, hats off to Airfix. Credit where credit is due, that kit is a stunner and for the sane side of £100 it is tremendous value for money. Oh hell, I think I'm talking myself into getting one. Somebody stop me!

  • @John-ey5cx
    @John-ey5cx ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A comment relating to the cockpit, the kit provides the two hooks underneath the fuselage (found on parts F3 and F32) which relate to the provision of a slipper fuel tank. What the kit doesn't provide is the "jettison tank control" for the slipper tank which would be located on the right (starboard) side of part D23. I tried attaching a schematic of the feature but failed.
    Another feature missing are the 'S' shaped air inlet pipes found on the front face of the engine driven generator. Perhaps another oversight (like the elevator control rod) given the featureless forward face of the generator.
    Last but not least, these comments are by no means intended to slam this kit as it is simply amazing and by far the best offering by Airfix.

      No doubt this kit is gonna be re-released in many different guises. I guess they have to stop somewhere when it comes to sharing parts vs accuracy?

    The con rods are "knife and fork" the same as a Harley Davidson. Keeps the engine compact. Great video.

    n regard to your block placement question, parallel is the answer you are looking for as Rolls Royce used a system where opposite cylinders had on the left hand bank a normal but thinner con rod and the opposing rod for the other bank had a two bearing tuning fork shaped yolk that fitted either side of it on the same journal thus allowing the blocks to be unstaggered, other versions on the same theme (though not Rolls Royce to the best of my knowledge) used 1 con rod with a bulged out bushed flange on one side of the rod which the opposing con rod was mated to via a wrist pin. this type was used quite a lot on american radial engines
    edited to add : I wrote this immediately you asked the question - but you obviously checked for yourself, oh and yes they ARE called the cylinder blocks being as each carries six cylinder outers for pushed in interference fit liners. by the time of the mark 9 Merlins had seperate cylinder heads, earlier marks were cast with the cylinder head and block as one piece - an absolute bitch to grind in the valves into by all accounts.

    Just had a look at a Merlin engine schematic and each bank of pistons share the same crank spindle, so the sleeves are all in line

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All V engines opposite cylinders share the same crank journal, which is why the banks are often staggered, the Merlin has a very unusual design of con rod, as I explained here. This is what allows the cylinder banks to be in line.

    I've NEVER bought anything from Premium Hobbies. Why? Cos they never have anything in stock! I just checked those clear files and it's the first time I've ever seen anything you've recommended in stock. But just to make sure, I went through most of the sections again, and no exaggeration, about 80% of their products say "sold out", and have done for at least a year. Not even your fancy black CA glue. They only seem to be good for some paints and glues. Tools though, the nice scribers you have, the fancy sanding machine, skinny files, etc, etc, no chance. They don't even say if they'll ever have anything back in stock.

      Hi Brian. PH is a one man business working from his house. he doesn't hold huge numbers in stock, and it often happens that when I review something from there it sells out in no time. We must also remember there are major issues with supply still.

    Hi Nigel, that’s a fine looking engine. Nicely built sir. I wonder if Chris, the Airfix designer, was a little bit inspired or influenced by the Tamiya kit? This engine looks very much like an enlarged version of that the way it’s broken down. Eager to see it all under a coat of paint and very much looking forward to the next thrilling instalment👍

    Hello, Nigel! Just saw your reveal of HK Models’s 1:48th-scale NAA B-25J Mitchell USAAF Medium Bomber (sighhhh! :( LOL ) kit. Now Airfix’s 1:24th-scale grand œuvre Supermarine Spitfire RAF Mk.IXc Fighter; specifically, assembling the Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12, 27-litre (1,650 in³) capacity, 1,300 kW (1,800 hp) piston æroplane engine.
    You earlier had asked whether the cylinders on a Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 Engine were staggered. Being rather the bookish sort, I enquired online-to no avail.
    Still, I found a few bits that might be of a bi of interest: a de-rated version of the RR Merlin engine was also the basis of the Rolls-Royce/Rover Meteor tank engine.
    Dwight Thorn is a master engine mechanic whose company, Mystery Aire Ltd., is just east of Gilroy, California, USA. He notes increasing difficulty in servicing and maintaining a RR Merlin V-12 engine to its potential, and that part of the problem is that [it] has six times as many parts as an Allison V-1710 V-12 engine. (source: “Masters of the V-12” (no author cited, no date of publication; aroundthepattern.-com/PDFs/Masters-of-the-V-12.pdf#-:~:text=Cylinder%20heads%20are,stacked%20like-%20cordwood).
    Well, this seems to me like an overweeningly silly exaggeration! What are your thoughts on this, Nigel? What is your field at work, please?

  • @brucegordon7988

    Nigel, the cylinders are not staggered! There is a very clever design that joins the connecting rods, which allows this. There is something odd about the Airfix design. The supercharger housing isn’t right, and the cam covers should not taper front to rear as they do.

    Hi Nigel, following this build with glee (and glue!). For info, it is possible to fit the engine cylinders prior to dropping the inlet manifold between the two. The only problem I have found is with the intercooler top; I think it is short shot but it’s too late as I’ve already fitted it 😳.
