Quinns, the reason that most boxes have so much empty space is because they generously leave room for your average Reference Pear.

The publishing process is clever. In the real world you have to publish _something_ fairly frequently or you're out of the game, and submitting papers to conferences for the collaborative benefit offers other people the chance to leapfrog your work and gazump you, as does taking too long on making great research! That's some nice game design right there, even if the real-world publish or perish sucks big time.

    • @Duiker36

I feel like there's a surprisingly large amount of "this mechanic is fun in a game, but when you realize it's mirroring real life pretty well, suddenly reality is depressing".

But when you reach the end of the publishing track here the scientific community says if you're right or wrong
If it was real life publishing, the app would say 'this idea is stupid and you're all stupid for being involved in this stupid idea' and 'i really like this publication, and think that with a few revisions it would be a fantastic addition to the scientific community' from two different reviewers
Though that might be about as fun as receiving those reviews in real life

    • @KieronTaylor
      @KieronTaylor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@theoneandonlyjs19 Perhaps it would be fun if the other players could force you to issue a retraction, but you'd still have all the benefit of early publishing because your citation count would be through the roof... I dunno. My university had great citation metrics after a certain cold fusion debacle

      Another real life mechanich:
The advancing the player pawns in the game while that messures "time", and that being reflectes by THE EARTH MOVING AROUND THE SUN, and not only that, but entering THE SEASONS art. So, as stupid as "move your pawn, the last player tajes his turn, and rotate the disc to match last player" is an incredibly elegant and fun and strategic way to do a thing as complicated as time passing while surveing the skies and entering in Spring.
Im astonished of the clever things that are together in this game.

One thing not mentioned in the review - it's really great in solo. Probably the best solo implementation I've seen in board games ever. You play vs the bot, who similarly to real players also asks questions, but publishes only based on obtained answers. It's not a simple clock to make you nervous, the bot actually deduces information just like you. When he finds the planet you probably also have enough information to find it, you just haven't put all the pieces together as well. Can't recommend enough!

This is really exciting! Alchemists was one of the first games I got after discovering modern board games. We recently tried playing it again and even though it felt like we remembered most of the rules, it was SO time consuming to relearn. I said at the time that a game with the same core deduction mechanic without all the faff would be perfect and this looks to be exactly that! Thanks a lot SUSD for continuing to fuel my board game addiction...

You've just started the game: do you want to publish your first paper?
Actually, this is very close to how science works (because you often publish a concept paper after a planning phase about what you are going to do)
Also the way you get your mitts on the work of others as soon as they publish and incorporate it in your research...yes, that's also how science works
    Love it.

@@saiyanroyalty229 Do you care about using an app? Someone could give a wrong clue in Cryptid, but that's not a problem with Planet X using an app. Also as Quinns says, different people could start with different amounts of starting information (if you play with kids, they can get more hints than you).
Cryptid fell flat for me several times. We ran out of Yes/No pieces so I guess we didn't use all the clues correctly.
I'm good at logic but it was harder for me to understand in Cryptid, and it doesn't come with deduction sheets.

This looks super interesting, but games with required apps are a difficult proposition for me. I want games that I can keep and play in perpetuity, without needing to worry about the support lifespan for niche apps. And I'm not sure this really goes far enough as an integrated physical/digital experience to justify the app reliance.

Search for Planet X sounds interesting but how is it solo? Quinns spent quite a bit of the review talking about the ways players interact with each other, but in the beginning he mentioned it's a game for "1 to 4" players and I'm curious how it plays solo. I'm not sure I'd be able to convince my friends to play this that often but if it's a solid solo logic game I'd get it. 😄
Also when he was comparing it to other logic games, he left out Rising 5 Runes of Asteros which is kind of like a really fun hybrid of Mastermind and Pandemic. Definitely worth checking that one out if you're looking for great logic games to play solo or with your friends.

Some commentators have talked about how deduction games can become “make a mistake and your out of the game”....so I’d like to recommend one of the very early examples of the genre Code 777
This sidesteps that problem because the hidden information is your 3 tiles, but you have to guess them three times to win - if you make a mistake you only lost one chance (and put a bit more information into the world for the other players). But importantly you can rebuild your knowledge base from that point and start fresh - the mistake doesn’t poison the whole game.
It’s ace and doesn’t rely on an app!

The problem is that anything with an app needs to have a trust with enough money in it to pay for software maintenance and possibly server upkeep, across all relevant platforms, in perpetuity. And has anyone *ever* done that? Probably not, because who's going to put an extra hundreds of thousands of monies into a game up front? Pure software projects might be able to rely on fans to do maintenance, but the reverse dependency also exists-it's pointless to maintain the app unless you have a physical copy of the game. It just all seems like a bad plan.

What I like with Alchemist is that it comes with a "How to play with Game Master instead of using the app" (with components for that, not just some abstract rules). Playing with the app is better as the role of Game Master is kind of boring, but you don't NEED the app.

What I think is: the app doesn't need a server. I tried it with Plane Mode, and it still works. You of course can't connect with other devices.
But that means that, you download the app, and there you have it, whether they maintain it or not.

@@thelyghter7927 Not at all. If an app is server based, the server requires upkeep but the software has a potential lifetime of many years, possibly even a decade or two, before it needs to be recoded to track evolving standards. If it is not server based, it needs to be updated regularly to track the evolution of mobile operating systems and port it to new ones (and perhaps even new hardware-it's not obvious to me that touch sensitive 2D displays will stay with us forever any more than 80 column ANSI terminals did) as they arrive, and there's an ongoing overhead of shepherding them through the app stores.
The industry has just put *zero* effort into-no, in fact, it has actively opposed-the engineering necessary to make software continue to work in the medium term, much less the long term, even though the problem has been well understood for over half a century.
How much software from the year 2000 can you load onto your phone and have it work? Not much, though I know I have one piece-NetHack-that's older than that. Now how much of it “just” worked without someone going to substantial engineering effort to make it happen? None at all. Absolutely none. There's not even a loading path from a CD to a phone-much less from floppy disk, a magnetic tape, or a deck of punched cards.
It really astonishes me how people kid themselves about this. Did your Google music collection not just get flushed? Mine did. There is no plan in place for anything in the digital world to last long enough to pass on to the next generation.

@@stephenspackman5573 Oh you are right! :-O
I didn't thoufht about My Phone getting obsolete, not the duo My App and my Phone. If my Phone crashes, and I have to have a new one, and then the app doesn't work there because its 5 year old and they didn't care about it, then thats it, we are doomed, we can't really play the game anymore.
I just hope that, with all the effort put here, they would still maintain it for the future.
      I just hope it :-O
And for that prize, 10 years of good gaming sessions is worth it.
