I`m 62. I`ve been playing these games since before this Quinns fella was born 💀.
Anyway, My City: Until about halfway through I was so far behind the leader that I had no chance of making up the difference. Then the game changed significantly. I came up with a plan. My opponents somehow neglected one of the new features. My plan worked, and I eventually won on the tie-breaker. This was one of my most memorable victories ever...Fantastic game.

The "you see how much you are behind on the board and it can be demoralising" was also a negative that Rahdo mentioned, and it has kept me from picking this up.
From what I understand the rules change ( a bit) every 3 games, so could the new feature also be something that would disappear very quickly?

well, as I said on the first upload, I'm impressed they went to the effort of the 2-sided boards to allow the evergreen play mode.
But yeah, they really did play it ultra-safe on the theming.
I don't know if playing it safe makes it the wrong choice. I think placing buildings in a town is a better theme than any they listed and I think it would probably a whole lot easier for me to get a group to commit to playing dozens of games of than something like Real Housewives organizing their shoes.
@@falconJB Idk, you're right, but it feels like when you're trying to go to a restaurant and the only place people can agree on is Olive Garden despite, yk, Olive Garden being Olive Garden. It's no one's favorite. It's *tolerable*.
Ideally a specific theme would be so well done and magnetic just from the box that after one game you'd be sucked in. Might not be able to get as wide a range of people into a fashion closet game, but imagine how much more personal it would feel getting a Commes de Garcons coccoon or whatever instead of a church, etc.

I think having a theme everyone is fine with is especially important in legacy games where you want a game you can get a group of people to want to play for dozens of games. The worse case scenario for this type of game is that you convince your group to give it a try and a few games into the campaign half the group is still really into it and the other half is completely done with the idea of rearranging their shoes for the umpteenth time.
This is particularly important for this game because its selling its self as a family game so it can't have a theme any members of the family are likely to just bounce off of.
Theme could have been a hostess seating diners at an Olive Garden.
Far worse than the theme(or lack thereof) was the presentation. The pieces have an untextured gray background? Really? They could have just used the same grassy texture as the board itself, and it would instantly be twice as pleasing, with no extra effort or cost.
They really needed a graphic designer to slap this thing with a color palette a few times before they moved it to production.

"Involving sealed envelopes and stickers..." One reason that I love Shut Up & Sit Down is because I can often tell which games would be completely wrong for me very quickly. Fun, entertaining reviews but also very informative.
In case you left the review immediately after hearing "sealed envelopes and stickers...," I just want to make sure that you were aware that My City can be played as a standard, unchanging board game using the front of the boards (this is called "Eternal City" mode in the rules), while the Legacy City mode uses the back of the board. Depending on the price, it may be worth your while to get it just for the Eternal City mode.

If anything, Knizia copied himself. Check out his earlier 2009 game called Fits. The only real difference is that in Fits you slide the pieces down (ala Tetris), and in My City you simply plop them down.
The circus theme would be awesome. Really great idea.
A fun theme would be displaying a collection of looted/repatriated (depending) artefacts in a museum

Slotting weirdly shaped chipsets on a computer panel. There, that's my better theme.
I think that is a theme I would like more, but I think a lot of other people wouldn't.
@@falconJB mmm. IDK. Wasted space on the board, exposed components, uninterrupted data flow for adjacent chips of the right types, and at the end graded for efficiency so you don’t even have to rely on victory points, the legacy component would be competing engineers in a company where the best are given more responsibilities to deal with, it’s a lot more engaging and actually fits the mechanics better than the stale bread of the city building theme.
@@thechevyferrari9559 I agree that it would fit well and I would like it, but designers use building cities and towns not just because they are lazy but because it has fairly universal appeal. A group is far more likely to say yes to committing to playing dozens of games of city building than chip placement. Also since its meant to be a family game its likely that many in its target audience haven't played so many city builders that they are tired of them.

RE: working in a post office. Considering if you live in the US the post office has job security (Pretty hard to get canned from the post office) and a pretty sweet benefits package(delicious healthcare benefits! All the envelope glue you can eat!), pays reasonably well, and one of the last remaining jobs you can get a pension for (All of the above has a little "For now" asterisk), not to mention 13 days of leave per year for the first 3 years? Yeah, I would like to work there.

Seriously though, I lived in the States for for years, and unless your job is unionised, you're pretty stuffed. Things we take for granted in the UK just don't exist there, and you'll get shafted by you health insurers if they think you can't afford to take them to court for refusing to pay out.
I played this with my girlfriend and my daughter and I think it's my all time favorite gaming experience. It might not be the best game but we had such a blast with it I was winning pretty much from episode 4 to 21. The last games, my daughter pulled ahead and won the entire thing. I was so proud.

I received Scarabya for Christmas, which is a similar polyomino game that is family friendly. No legacy element, but compelling gameplay as your team of archaeologists works to uncover ancient artifacts by surrounding their sites. Each player color also has a totally different theme, which is a nice little touch. Definitely worth checking out for fans of the genre, or if you're looking for a game to play with family that may not be drawn to urban planning.
“Spoons at the buffet of a cuddling convention” was an absolutely top tier line.
Quinns going into the kitchen for a cup of tea for some reason took me waaay back to the beginning days of SUSD.
I bought this when hints were pointing at it in previous SUSD videos (or newsletter?) for around £30 and I don't regret it! The video doesn't mention it but it works for 2 players (with tiny hiccups when scoring sometimes). The game is so short it's almost the same trap than "let's grab one drink".
The sounds in this video bring me so much joy

"The Drummer hasn't slept for a few days." Sounds par for the course to me.
In this case, however, he's *not* on any uppers.
The problem with the theme is that if each shape were individualized, like knickers, handkerchief, and suspenders for an old-timey suitcase, the players could identify with the items rather than the shape. You could say "Damn it, I've got no space for knickers!" or "C'mon C'mon mustache comb!" or whatever even with that admittedly tepid theme. The abstraction to generic buildings prevents identifying with the pieces, missing that extra level of engagement.
The theme problem carries over into the scoring because the metric of "best city = no green space" doesn't have the intuitive click of "perfectly packing a suitcase or car trunk," "seating people as many people as possible at an event," "cramming food on your buffet plate," or "organizing a zoo so the animals don't eat each other." In all of those examples not placing a shape represents a thematic loss (I couldn't take my handkerchief, Izabell couldn't come to the party again, I missed out on the tapioca, etc.), not just "I couldn't fit this oddly-shaped piece."
Thanks Quinn, I have always liked games but never really gotten into playing a lot of board games. Your enthousiasm, honesty and clarity in reviews have provided me with so many good options and it really opened up this new world that I truly love. Downside is I have a huge craving for games now and can't always play it with this damn pandemic. P.S. race of the galaxy was an amazing recommendation!
I bought this game based on this review and it arrived today. Not even had a chance to play with anybody, but playing it solo has got me hooked! It's a mix of relaxing and exciting, and so satisfying when everything works out. Can't wait to crack into the legacy content, and speaking of content, fabulous video!
I’ve been in the hobby a little over two years and this is the first time I’ve played a game BEFORE the SUSD review and I’m oddly proud of that. It feels like something that deserves a sticker.

This style of Polyomino game (I call them Tetris games) has been very popular with designers recently and your final comment about theme hits upon the main reason I can't justify owning more than two of them. They all feel like more or less the same game to me. Sure there's something inescapably appealing about a blank canvas and creating your own little thing that you can feel proud of. It's why I poured more than a decade into Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the day. And maybe for some of us there's also some psychological compulsion toward trying to compel the forces of chaos in this Flatland cardboard universe into a perfect symmetry that the real world stubbornly refuses to conform to which scratches an itch. But even with compelling artwork and a novel theme, the choices you're making about how to place these familiar shapes to best fill the grid are virtually identical from game to game. New York Zoo has the thematically appropriate breeding mechanic to add a second layer of choices and slightly more immersion. Generally speaking though, I'm always left with the question of "is this different enough to justify chucking one of the nearly identical games I already own for"? And that answer is almost always no.
I think of them of as polyominoes simply because that's how I first met them when they were still a puzzle, and not yet a game. It was in Arthur C. Clarke's "Imperial Earth" which I first read in the early '80s. In subsequent years, after making and trying the puzzles, I had all sorts of ideas for turning them into the foundation of board games but, of course, my primitive attempts have now been overtaken by the vast slew of polyomino games now published by real game designers.
@@DerekHohls Oh, that sounds fun. I may have to read that! For my part I just hear that Tetris theme music from the Nintendo Gameboy in my head at the mere sight of them and the anxiety starts to kick in. Which, now that I think of it, might play a role in why I don't like any of these games. I thought I would like The Princes of Florence, New York Zoo, and Paris: La Cité de la Lumière but all of them got boring for me after a couple plays. Llamaland is the only polyomino game I've kept and it's skating by mostly on the strength of it's adorable little llamas.
If you have ideas for how to use them which are inspired by Arthur C. Clarke I'd say give it a go and put something out there. Anybody can be a game designer -- you just have to be willing to fail over and over again until you make something that works. I'm still waiting for a designer to use them in a way that is truly unique so you've got at least one customer if you figure it out.

The final envelope of the legacy variant introduces more realism. The first 20 turns are spent solely on meetings to decide on the city planning, which eventually concludes on a lay out least desirable to the residents.

As always, great review. When I first heard about my cities I was very excited and then put off somewhat by the mixed reviews. After watching this, I'm still conflicted! I love that your player board is your own, and I really need to add a tesscelation game to my collection, but I'm afraid of the lack of player interaction. (This is one of the many reasons Isle of Skye is one of my favorite games which sees play at least once a month despite us being on a gloomhaven kick right now) Do you think it holds up as a game that can share space with Isle of Skye? How does it compare to isle of cats or other tesscelation games, I'm also conflicted since the main mechanich seems very similar to cartographers.
I think I want to love this game but if I get the other things on my wish list I just do not have a place for it.
Ive been preaching the word since last fall, this game is the biggest bang for your buck out there. Fun, cheap, legacy, family friendly, solo friendly, distance gaming friendly (if you each have a copy), it is just so darn ...surprising!

Had never really noticed what town Quinn's lived in, but find it a bit coincidental that I watched this video on the same afternoon that I just saw Plucky Brighton defeat Champions Liverpool in a sport that I am pretty sure is called "kick-ball-with-foot ball game".
The thing I love the most is that this game can be played solo all you have to do is say that you want x amount of points if you get it then you win (which is basically just an excuse for you to play this game even more).
Can someone please make one of the themed version ideas for this game? All of them sound so good. (Although with the idea of the pet one I guess would mean that not fitting a tile represents that you couldn't adopt the animal which is too sad.)
isle of cats. Rescue cats on a boat. It's not legacy, but it is a favourite with everyone I played it with. They even ask us when we are going to play it again.
Quins what are your thoughts on tiny towns? My city appears to scratch a similar itch, but I feel like there might be something slightly more satisfying. Would love to hear how you would compare them!

My childhood dream was to sort letters on the overnight mail train. (I wish I was joking) Those trains don't exist anymore, so this game will have to do

I remember being a kid where I had a book that included different letters to people that you were "delivering," unique envelopes with some fun note inside, also themed to the letter. Ultimately I think Quinns is right.

This game looks so interesting to me, as I love getting to the state of "I'm playing 4 dimensional chess" thinking that simple puzzles can bring about, but at the same time, goodness is the game boring to look at.
It shouldn't be a major thing for me to care about in games, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I am shallow and I want my games to look nice. How else will I bring people to the table?
