The filter is actually mounted vertically. I always pre-fill the new filter before I put it on. Great video as always 👍. Thanks, Pete. It has a Fram Ultra Synthetic on it and Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 High Mileage in it now. Only bought the Fram as O'Reilly is out of the way and I didn't pick one up ahead of time. Anyone interested in seeing how the Fram looks after my next oil change?
You're Welcome, and Thanks👍
@@WhipCityWrencher Hey Whip, any idea why TH-cam keeps deleting my reply here? Was telling Matt to give the PGI made Carquest Premium 84356 a try. Frustrating for sure.
@@faxmen09 No I don't, Sometimes TH-cam puts questionable comments in a folder named "Held for review" but I just checked and nothing in there, empty. Sorry, I don't know what to tell you, something is probably off, just keep trying or rewording something in your comment.
@@WhipCityWrencher I tried it twice and then gave up. As mentioned, just made the suggestion for PGI made CQ, gave the price after 15% discount code (~$6.60), and that they are kept behind the counter if he wants to look at one. Nothing questionable don't think. I mentioned Advance Auto and retailmenot site to find code. That shouldn't be an issue. Maybe this one will stick and all the info in my replies to you. 😃Hope you're having a great weekend.
@@faxmen09 Strange I don't know why it's not posting, I'll try and take the previous comment you made to me and post it under Matt's post. So far the weekend is going well, I hope your weekend is good also, Thanks!
With that construction quality and the plus of the silicone O-ring, this could be the perfect filter if they offered a version with a fully synthetic media.
Love LOVE Microgard filters. Lots of people have not caught on
To how good these are. Built extremely well.
Thanks for Sharing👍
A good looking filter with most of my preferred features - silicone/silicone/coil spring.
The funny thing is that most car manufacturers recommend the flat, sheet metal springs. They stop the filter core from tilting. Coil springs are considered inferior.
@@donwyoming1936 The current filter from the dealer has a coil spring and the two previous ones had a stamped metal retainer spring. Apparently Subaru didn’t sign on to that.
How would the filter media tilt when there is maybe a millimeter of space between the endcaps and the can?
That engine definitively has a bit of buildup inside (maybe a previous owner neglected it a bit?), and the Valvoline HM Syn oil has a really good detergent package, looks like it is cleaning up that engine real good. I would reduce the change interval a bit for the next 2 or 3 oil changes, give it a change to break down all that buildup without clogging the filter too much.
Detergents in motor oil prevent build up, they don't really clean pre-existing deposits.
The motor is direct injected, they suffer from bad fuel dilution, which creates a lot of deposits.
@@GainingDespairI disagree. They have packages that do assist in cleaning but primarily are to prevent build up.
@@christianrosas3188 Yes, like esters however this product contains none, nor is ester a detergent it is a base stock.
@@christianrosas3188I disagree too, they certainly do clean up pre existing deposits. I always think a filter change halfway through is good if the history is unknown.
Looks like it's built by premium guard. Seems to be a quality filter
My son bought a used, newer car with very high mileage and sludge. Lots of sludge. Ran Lucas synthetic 5W20 for 2k miles. Didn't budge the sludge. Dealer changed the oil with Valvoline high mileage 5W30. Didn't budge the sludge in 2500 miles. I changed it with Quaker State 10W30 dino oil. In 1000 miles, the sludge is cleaned out.
And... I have one of these Microguard filters installed. Great timing.
Thanks for sharing!👍
I've had sludge clean out with Supertech full synthetic. It wasn't the Quaker State with the lower detergent additive package...
Premium Guard/PGI made filters do look to be well made and have a solid efficiency rating, this MG Select a good example. Got nothing much else to say about it. Thanks for the vid. Have a great day.
It's made by Mann Hummel I believe
You're Welcome faxmen09👍
@@bigdaddymak1439 Made by Premium Guard / PGI as faxmen09 stated
@@bigdaddymak1439 Respectfully, no. As noted, made by Premium Guard. This one as Whip stated in Vietnam.
Looks like a good filter!
These are very good filters for sure. I run them on my fleet
THat' a mighty decent looking filter. I might try one next time, after by stash of filters runs out.
Thanks for testing this...I like these filters. I'm late to the game...but I've started to run these or Carquest Premium's. Honestly, these Microguard Selects aren't too horribly priced, either!
You're Welcome👍
Carquest Premium Blue is a Purolator One filter in disguise. Good Filter.
The filter did great. Thanks for making my Friday 😅
You're Welcome, Thanks👍
Happy Friday WhipCityWrencher looks like a great filter!! Thanks 🔧
Happy Friday to you also WrenchingMafia, Thanks!👍
I've been using these for the last couple years based off of the cut open inspection videos on this channel. Recently though, I noticed at my local O'Reilly's has been carrying new stock of these MicroGard Selects with a China origin, instead of Vietnam. They also appear to have changed to a cheaper O-ring material (appears to be a colored nitrile akin to what Purolator has). I can't say for sure what other changes were made without cutting it open, but I'll be sure to check when I've completed my OCI. I had installed the last one without realizing that it was this new design and I believe I'm having a little more start up rattle, although that could just be in my head. Either way, I bought the last 3 filters they had with the old design, made in Vietnam. Hopefully, there'll be a good alternative after I use those up.
Thanks for Sharing👍
The bypass valve on the Chinese version is also different. I like the design of the Viet Nam version better.
That soot is most likely from the EGR ! The filter media under the microscope looks to be at least %50 clogged so it did good but to be safe maybe go to 5k mile changes !
👍
Indeed. That is the risk of running high efficiency oil filters that filter down to 20-23 microns at 99% while also running 100% synthetic oil that can last over 5k miles. By the time you get to 4k miles that filter is likely clogged and you are now bypassing the filter media. The oil is still fine, but your filter is clogged. The Oil Geek recently did a live stream where this was discussed. Interesting topic for sure. As you mentioned change your oil/filter earlier.
Nice, great post oil change filter...👍
Thank You👍
I would use this filter. Nice video.
Thank You👍
On that specific model, the oil filter DOES mount sideways on the block.
Thank You👍
Looks like a good filter, that amount of carbon though, is quite high for just 6k miles. It makes me wonder if there are Factory Spark Plugs still in the engine at that mileage? 100k miles on Plugs is a farse, none, not even Iridium last that long. 90K and mine had the tips completely burned off. I always change at half the time interval the factory says.
That appears to be a quality filter. The sludge/carbon/soot looks quite normal for a high rate filter that has been in service for 6,000 miles. The standard filters usually allow the deposits to pass through and remain suspended in the oil. I’d bet the engine is as clean as when new on this vehicle. Another great video.
Thank You👍
The soot/sludge found inside this filter is quite normal for 6,000 miles of usage. You may not see it on a less restrictive filter. This appears to be a quality made filter and likely has a higher grade media that filters out a bit more than an average filter. Some folks think that these filters should be all squeaky clean inside, which is not a bad thing but it is also not a bad thing to see a bit of debris caught by the filter. The filter would not be necessary if it did not absorb and remove anything from the oil. Think about it!
👍
Looks like a good oil filter it looks like a wix filter number.
Thanks,
Pretty sure made by Premium Guard, www.pgfilters.com/products/filters/oil-filters/oil-filters/
Good morning,
Very good video! Nice to see the microguard filter after it did it's job. Does appear that the filter held up and did the job during the time installed. Enjoy the weekend!
Thanks, Kevin
Enjoy your weekend as well👍
Last post disappeared.
Yes, we agree the world is a very different place now from 5years ago.
Our plans to be blue water cruisers changed too - sell the farm and get a catamaran.
Good Luck!
???
Thanks Matt!
What a great video !!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thank You👍
Wonder if the owner did a engine flush before this oil change? That's the problem getting too much sludge removal too fast. @motoroilgeek went to Valvoline about the Restore and protect oil. They talk about cleaning engines slowly to not clog things up. Great video Happy Friday
Thank You and Happy Friday!
I saw that video, the Valvoline Restore looks like it would be a good oil.
Not a bad filter, but i'd change it every 3,500 miles.
Very nice filter, although it has more excess glue than what I’ve seen in Pete’s other Microgard reviews. Very surprised, though, at the amount of carbon/sludge buildup in just
6000 miles. I would like to see Blackstone Lab analysis on that oil. Based strictly on visual appearance of the oil, I would shorten the OCI to 4K miles, or less.
Hi friend I missed this one 👍
This looks like a good filter. I’ll try one in the future. Thanks
Seems like a good filter and very good sharing ❤, TFS
Thanks, Merri
Have a Great Weekend👍
As always, very cleanly made filter 👍
Decent filter
Hey friend nd
No excess glue is nice, since some filters have glue junk on the metal ends that could get sucked through the bypass valve.
This appears similar or the same as the Pentius PLXL7317, which fits a lot of Japanese engines, especially almost all Honda/Acura ones. Pentius is made in Korea, MIcroGard in Vietnam, and looks like both use basic Premium Guard brand parts, popular set-up for Asian factories it appears. th-cam.com/video/UPdhXchpXZk/w-d-xo.html for a Chinese factory making very similar oil filters.
Thanks for that - fascinating video.

Looks ok. Good video as usual Pete. 😊
Thanks John👍
Please do one on the Motocraft fl-1995 vs fl-1995-A
Why are only half of the pleats dirty? It looks like every other pleat is clean.
It's just the reflection from the light that makes it look that way.
Looking at that I personally would change the oil at 5k on that engine. Otherwise that filter did a really good job.
Hi friend. Another great informative video 👍
Thank You😊👍
It's a very well made filter, but wonder what the filtration rate is, 100 micron, 50, 20? That's an important thing to know, but I like what I see so far. Usually I try to find Wix premium or Purolator as they're well known for quality filters.
It's 99% at 25 microns, 4:35
Thanks, Pete.
Looks like a solid filter and well made. Maybe that's why they now make the NAPA Gold filters. What, in your opinion is the best cartridge style filter in regards to filtration and high flow?
You're Welcome Jonathan, Thanks👍
I still like the Purolator Boss oil filters, Cartridge, or Spin-on oil filters.
@@WhipCityWrencher thanks, I like the Boss filters as well.
How does one go about sending W.C. Wrencher a used oil filter? Don't think I've ever seen an FVP brand filter taken apart and would love to see what it looks like inside after being used.
If you want to send me a used oil filter, send me an email to, Poker4me007@gmail.com Here are two FVP oil filters that I've opened up. Thanks! th-cam.com/video/uMnxMqysSC4/w-d-xo.html

Happy Oil Filter Friday!
Looks like a decent filter. How do you like the Purolator Boss?
Thanks for the videos! 😎👍👍
You're Welcome Jay,
I like the Purolator Boss, I have one on my vehicle right now. Solid oil filter!👍Thanks!
I wonder if you ran a bottle of engine flush through and then checked the filter, how much junk would you get?
Microgard oil filters are not Fram ... that's a complement.
how do you recognize that it is a synthetic blend media?
I got that info on O'Reilly's website. www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/select/microgard-select-oil-filter/mgd5/msl57356/v/a/145341/automotive-truck-2018-mitsubishi-outlander-sport
Great Job, Pete. Nice looking filter, I like the silicone gasket and coil spring. it looks it was make with care and not sloppily put together, too,
That motor might need some carbon cleaning with something like techron or ATS-505. If it is a GDI engine they tend to carbon up more than regular TBI engines.
Thank Jim
Have a good weekend👍
@@WhipCityWrencher Anytime Pete! You too!
Almost every video from experts I have seen strongly discouraged any oil additive. Just run a high quality oil to clean out any old sludge. The valvoline was probably cleaning out some crud from previous long intervals or subpar oils.
@@F0XD1E THose aren't oil additives, those go into your gas tank
.. 🥇
It is disappointing to see that oil sludging with such few miles.
Might be from a previous owner going too long on his oil change intervals.
how do we send you filters for review? thanks

You measure the paper thickness incorrectly. You may want to change you technique when you do this. Measure 5 pleats (10 layers) at the same time and apply some force to make sure you measure the paper and not the air between the pleats. The result divide by 10 and you will get the correct number which is going to be around 0.4 mm +/- 0.1 mm. Not 0.9 mm or 0.6 mm. Those are totally wrong numbers.
I did it correctly
@@WhipCityWrencher Nobody uses paper 1 mm thick. If you get this number from your measurement than your measurement has a problem.
@@mikman7219 So you say I lie when I show it on the video what my thickness gauge says?
@@WhipCityWrencher I think you did not read what I suggested.
@@mikman7219 Sorry I dont understand
