Almost from birth, I've always wanted to have clean fence rows. My dad was that way as well. Nothing makes a property look more attractive than mowing or trimming under a fence. The problem is, IT'S A TON OF WORK!
When I was in high school, I would spend time in the winter chopping saplings and thorn bushes out of the fences around our property. It was a lot of work, but it kept me out of trouble and gave me exercise in the off season. Then one day I got my driver's license and that was pretty much the end of it. The fence rows grew up in small trees that became bigger trees and pretty soon it was out of control. I gave up.
The fences where I live now have always bugged me. Sometimes I'll get part of them cleaned out, but it's a constant struggle. One day I was messing around on TH-cam and I came across the Wright Fence Mower. It's a machine with a mower blade that pivots around a fence. It was one of those things that I thought "I wish I could try one of those."
So, it was a great joy when Lance, from Wright Fence Mowers, contacted me earlier this year and asked me to evaluate one of his mowers. I told him I'd be glad to.
The mower arrived in May and it took me some time to line up fence rows to try it in to do the evaluation. In the video you'll see the results.
Basically, what I found was that the Wright Fence Mower does a beautiful job around metal and wood posts on level ground. If the post doesn't bend, it'll cut all but the plants that are growing right next to it. It will also work on a vinyl fence, although it does leave a little mark down low where the guard rail on the mower pivots around the fence. That's not a problem for me, I have marks on the fence now where I've bumped it with the zero turn that are much worse, and I think they'll "weather out" over time and the mark will be less pronounced as the mower's spring and other components wear and aren't as tight. Over time, it's possible the mower will make a groove where it hits, especially if it's used often. So, if that's a problem for you, you may not want to use it on your vinyl fence.
If the post bends at the bottom, the Wright Fence Mower would likely cut it off. I was surprised at how big a woody plant the mower would cut, if it could bend it at the bottom, which is a good thing. A step-in plastic post, it would easily cut off, so don't try it on those.
The Wright Fence Mower also doesn't like an uphill slope. If the fence is in a dip in the terrain, or the ground slopes up on the side of the fence that's away from you, the mower will dig in, so you might want to avoid those areas. On level ground it does an amazing job.
You also need to do a little fence management to accommodate the Wright Fence Mower. Make sure that bottom wire is not below the cut line, and if you have "stays", the curly devices that go between posts to tie everything together, you'll probably need to bend them up at the bottom just so the cutter doesn't get into them. You also have to re-educate yourself about how to drive a tractor. When I was looking back to see what was going on (and I did that a lot because I was amazed by the brush it was cutting), my instinct was to drive away from the fence. So, it works best if you set the mover just outside of the tractor tires and just drive and look ahead, and let the mower do it's job. Finally, mow the field first and leave the fence row. I tried using the Wright Fence Mower first and cutting that out, then coming in and cutting the field and that doesn't work well because you're driving on grass you'll be trying to cut later. So leave the fence row cutting until the last.
In the end, if you like clean fence rows, have level ground, and solid fence posts, the Wright Fence Mower will make your property the envy of all your neighbors, and I have no qualms about recommending it. I really liked the cut quality as well, I honestly couldn't tell where the zero turn's cut ended and the Wright Fence Mower began, it really looks like you mowed it with a push mower. My fences haven't looked this good...EVER!!!
I want to sincerely thank Lance and the folks at Wright Fence Mowers for allowing me to do this evaluation.

It seems like they could easily remedy the vinyl fence post issue by mounting a replaceable strip of teflon or other slippery / long lasting material on the leading edge of the mower section.

Hi mike , to stop making marks on a vinyl fence try putting a piece of rubber on the edge of the swing arm or something similar . Looks like a great machine. Brian arnold , mt. Hope pa.

Looked great 'til I crunched my numbers. I pay to have someone do my fence lines with a string trimmer, but I do all my mowing. In my situation the break even point is 2-3 years. This thing costs as much as my rotary cutter, three point spreader, boom sprayer, ballast box, chain harrow, and box blade combined. Why is it so expensive?

What does one of these things cost? I'm having a 600' fence put in, and was planning on hitting the fence line and posts with glycophate as needed...

With a cab tractor you have rear view mirrors that would allow you to glance back to see how you are doing while you're looking straight ahead to keep the tractor out of the fence.

I think its just for one task. It only has the 1 blade on that wing and looks to be a pretty small blade, maybe 12-18" in length, so trying to use it for any other task, sure it could be done but you'd be at it forever due to the cutting width of the blade.

How about showing us a trick on how to mow around fence post with a normal brush-hog? Right now, $3,500 is a bit much. The other year when I got back, I bought an MX6 a lot cheaper! About a third less.

Great review Mike. We have woven wire 2x4 horse fence and I wish there was a solution for mowing up against it. I have looked at fence mowers in the past but none look up to the task. I also worry about the contact with the posts eventually knocking them slightly out of plumb over the years. If there was maybe a roller or piece of rubber on this particular mower and an adjustment to adjust the tension on the post (maybe there is?) it might help with your vinyl posts. I hear you about driving close to the fence. The worst is on the backside of our fence where the tractor is up hill. At my last place several times I got too close to the fence and once gravity takes over the tractor is right up against the fence and you cannot turn away from it without doing damage (since that swings the cutter into the fence).

I have a 22" walk behind craftsman trimmer, it uses 0.155" string, and does a great job around fences. Doesn't matter what you use though, if you get too close the fence will pull the string right out of the trimmer, but at least with the 22" craftsman walk behind trimmer replacing the strings are quick and easy. I carry several pieces of it with me when I'm using the trimmer, you just cut them to length and they slip over a tab securing them to the cutter head so it only takes a few seconds to change strings. I also have a cutter head for my weed eater that uses plastic cutters which are replaceable. The only thing with it, if you aren't careful you can get that to far into the fence and it'll just about yank the trimmer out of your hands, but those cutters are replaceable like I said, and they seem to last quite a while.

I'm wanting to buy a good finishing mower for my 50hp tractor. What brand or make do recommend?

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Jerry, I don't make a practice of recommending specific brands because there are several out there that I would be happy to own. I'd pick a "name" brand and buy from a dealer that I knew would take care of me, the ones that come to mind are Bush Hog, Woods, Rhino, Land Pride, Deere, and I'm probably forgetting someone whose stuff I like. Then I'd compare the specs and pricing between each brand to see where the value was. I don't think I've ever done a video on how to buy a finish mower, and I do have some recommendations that I'd consider where shopping, I'm putting that on the list. Thanks for the idea!

Hey Mike!, Great video as usual. Fence row trimming is been my headache as well. A small roller on the mower to fence contact point will solve grooving/scratching of the plastic post. Roller must be of largest diameter possible and set into mower deck, not external. Even roller belt surface approach is another approach. This is a design change, ver 2.0. Have had to use "home engineering" to resolve a number of tractor and implement fine tuning points.
Another question: At about 2:50 I noticed the New Holland has what appears to be a "work/storage/tool shelf" installed to the aft position of the roll bar at drivers easy reach. Is that a DIY creation? It is just what I need to carry daily and task oriented tools on my JD.

It looks like a nice implement to have but I would not need it where I live and the bush hog I have does a nice job on my property. For farmers and ranchers who have property with bushes growing up next to their fence it would be nice, but not for the average home owner.
