Aside from weed whacking around chain link fence you could also try smothering the grass underneath the fence line using something like shingles. As an older guy whose back hates carrying around a weed eater, I dropped $300 on a trimmer on wheels that has an adjustment to get a 10 degree slant. You can get right under the fence and you really save your back. This is a solid video.....just thought I'd throw the old man method out there. 😃
Hi Bruce! I am new here, but was interested in the old man device you mentioned. I have seen DR Trimmer and other big box store’s offerings like the Cub Cadet. I am needing to trim along a cattle fence line in the country. I have about 600’ of fence on both sides of the property with a back fence of 130+ feet. I never thought about the direction of the head spin being different from curved shaft to straight. I didn't even know that was a thing! Learn something everyday. For sure though, I much prefer to walk forward (left to right) and that throws the clippings into my beds but I don't usually worry about it since the FL sun just melts the clippings in minutes. As far as trimming around fence posts and pickets - I always shred the heck out of my string.
The “just above idle” trick works great. Something I have done for a while because the string doesn’t grab the fence and yank the trimmer. Great vid!
I’m in full time lawn care maintaining around 60 properties a month. Your method sounds like it might work pretty well, I’ll have to try that. What I normally do when trimming around chain link fences, I angle my trimmer line so that I’m trimming in an angle towards the bottom of the fence line instead of straight across. There’s several different methods but it seems for me it works well
A year later did his method work out for you? Did you change or go back to your method?
I have that same fence, and when I trim around it, I kick the fence in gently, and trim under it, and the kick the fence back in. Great video, I got a new and easier idea now!
String trimming is an art for sure. A balance between line speed, direction of travel, and orientation of line to the work. Different methods work better for some jobs than other ones. I’ve been in the professional maintenance game for 25 years and just picked up the trick you demonstrated a couple years ago. A line trimmer is a tricky tool for some - but when you master it the possibilities are endless
Agreed. When you master it, it is legitimate fun. My favorite is taking weeds out of curbs and pavement. Takes the most time to master without breaking too much line, but once you understand that distance game it becomes preferable to cutting for me.

Hey Ryan what do you think about giving the fence line a healthy dose of growth regulator so it stays alive but not out of control?
I have both the straight and curved attachments for my trimmer. both have specific advantages over the other. You are right, they are completely different to operate in terms of best direction of cutting.

I've had great success with the Shakespeare Ugly Head. Each string is on a rotating head so that when it hits the fence it gives and the string does not get destroyed. Absolutely love it.
I tip my trimmer at a downward angle on fences. Also build your fence an inch or two above ground so your trimmer can fit under the fence for a clean look.
Believe it or not that inch or 2 can cause issues when you have asshole dogs lol

I have a Tanaka curved shaft trimmer which I like as well. Straight shaft trimmers just seem awkward to me when I pick them up, although I have never used one in the field. I trim from right to left slow just like you instructed and it does work pretty well. I will have to try left to right first to get the bulk out of the way first.
Ryan, I have a huge yard and only get my trimmer out about once every three years. The key is to design everything so string trimming isn’t needed. I have about 200 feet of chain link to deal with. About half of that is flower beds, and the other half has a thick vine growing on it. The vine shades out the grass so that it hardly grows. Anyway, string trimming is just something I avoid 👍
Very informative. My friend has a chainlink fence that is completely overgrown mostly with vines a really tall grass. How can I clean it up?

This is an excellent and unique approach. I haven't seen anything like it. I have been using my weed torch to get it cleaned up, but this looks better, if it works with my electric trimmer.
I had to torch mine, the previous owners neglected it so bad that I had to torch it for several years to get all the weeds off it. Now I have it back to a hare (but old rusty) fence, I planted some yellow Jessamine. In time it will make for a sweet evergreen fence that blooms beautiful yellow.

Also try rotating the trimmer 90 degrees so the string is spinning parallel to the fence.. like the hands on a wall clock..

I found that the mid throttle setting used for starting runs my stihls at a very good speed and torque for normal cutting with minimum string breakage. My most recent machine had a full open start throttle that made it hard to start. I added a screw to the handle to set the mid throttle setting I wanted.

Great job on the tree ring video. You made the right call not putting the landscape fabric under the mulch. Like the back to eden gardening method you want that mulch nutrients/ soil food to get to the roots not hitting plastic and feeding weeds :)

I've got this trimmer as well works well always. Now I passed it down to my sons
I just staight edge both sides every mow. Takes a few times, but then it's perfectly clean n straight. And the fence doesn't get beat up.
I use Ortho Groundclear spray about 2 inches wide around fence perimeter never have to worry trimming or anything growing within those 2 inches

Sucks when it comes time to trim it but boy does it look good longer than a wood fence.
Visited Colorado and many folks had poured what looked like an 8” wide concrete slab along their chain link fence line. Looks super clean and easy to edge.

Thanks for this.. I've got to do some cleanup work from a messy job that someone else did on my fence line. These tips will help me out a lot. One question -- any specific type of string that you recommend using w/chain link fence?
I use a cable tie on the trigger adjusted to get the speed I want because on my own I tend to keep adding more power and the trimmer runs up the links. To stop the trimmer just slide the cable tie off the trigger.
Excellent point on picking the trimmer that you feel comfortable with. Usually people will research devices, consider feedback and try and make a informed decision on what to buy. Did that recently, bought a highly thought of trimmer. A machine used by professionals as well as home owners. I hate it. The balance is all wrong, I am 6 1 and the shaft is to short. Make sure you feel comfortable in the store first and foremost.
I do the same kind of work how come you don't work the weed eater string up and down on both sides of the fence if you can it'll clean it out pretty good
Excellent job revisiting line trimmers and chain link fence. I just finished a project with this issue. I really wanted to get my brush cutter blade and "diamond cut" that lazy sag bottom dweller of a degenerate link.
Reverse rotation with a lazy slap technique was nothing short of "Yoda!"

I have a corded electric string trimmer and I feel like I kinda do what you do just a little different because it is electric and the throttle is more like a on of switch... So I just do a quick pass at full speed and then come back and blip the switch just enough to take most of the curl out of my trimming string. It definitely eats much less string that way.
Frederick J Gomeringer Jr corded I had one it was terrible I got a battery powered and it was 130$ well spent ryiobi it’s on it’s 3rd season still going strong and it has variable speed also no dealing with annoying extension cords

@@HUNZY-qo3cv Yup the straight shaft has more power, the curved shaft is built different to be curved so it can't handle the bigger power. But the reason for home owners I prefer straight is the angles to vertical trim so much easier
hey, I have that exact same black coated chain-link fencing; however because its around the main thoroughfare sidewalk and my dogs, the grass stays all worn down along it... so I dug up all under the fence and a foot on each side and just put in black wood chip mulch..now I did have to put in edging on the outside(of the fence) edge to keep a nice line of one mower pass wide grass to the sidewalk - but inside the fence my dogs have a clean race track to run along and beat down any spreading KBG - so far its kept up pretty swell • but for sure I like the idea of sliding old shingles under it, as well as doing that second reverse pass at slow idle speed(I'll have to remember that one for line eating jobs) • great tips!

I used your method today and it worked very well, my line was from last year so it was very brittle, I’m 5’10” with short legs and a tall body the bent shaft trimmer work well for me and you Hitachi trimmer sounds like it runs really good. Thank You great video?

I've trimmed chain link fence like this for years works well! However, the shingle method will never work because of sediment from watering and rain will cover the entire shingle and will eventually grow on top of the shingle just like you are running into now.

I just bought a house with fence pubes. Going to try this method. I’m worried though because it is quite tall and bushy at the moment. I might have to do it by hand the first time and then use the trimmer from then on.

Do they sell any products that can attach to the bottom 6 inches of the fence? That way you have something to go right up against without getting the trimmer line into the chain link. You had me thinking with he roof shingles. Instead of putting them flat on the ground, put them 90 degrees on each side.

I kick the bottom of chain link fence to one side as I trim, then kick it back the other way when I trim the opposite side.
Those MTD curved trimmers are much easier to use due to weight, I still have one with a brush cutter blade attached.. My neighbor is too sorry to cut the weeds and sprayed a fence with glyphosate that drifted on my grass and I see damage to a grape vine, its obvious it was mixed very strong. One (1) oz per gallon sprayed under the wire can slow down the grass without leaving a big dead spot.
This may be a dumb question but if we share a fence-line with neighbors will this method help both sides if we are only cutting on our side? I hope that question makes sense

What about the fence itself? I have stuff that grows the entire height of the fence, and then some. 1 side of the fence is state property, so I can't touch that, and the other is mine. State property is basically wooded area with a lot of tall brush/weeds that grow along the fence line and through/above the fence. It's easier to explain via photo than it is via text.

Ryan I was thinking you Connor Ward and the Lawn care nut should have a three way fun competition. All of you decide what type/brand and purchase a manual reel mower (same type so it is equal) then pick a section of you yard for the competition. (Side lawn whole front whatever you like) who ever is able to get the best looking lawn with that mower wins! It will truly be on each of you to perform your best not just how well the mower does. Then the subscribers can vote! At the very least I think a lot of people would watch that series I know I would!!!

was this fence installed by the builder as I see it going down your neighbors yard as well, not my choice for a fence as it has a commercial feel to it.
Most of my yard has chain link fence and I loathe trimming against it. I had an electric trimmer for years and I switched to a gas trimmer 2 years ago. I can never go back to electric. The fact that I can run a gas trimmer just above idle is so helpful in certain spots around the yard, especially along the chain link fence. I've never tried going in the opposite direction, I'll have to see how that works for me. I've always moved left to right since I had my electric trimmer (and my trimmers have all been straight, both gas and electric) as going the other way seemed...weird? Anyway, I'll try the double pass (going one way and then the other) and see how it works, but I will attest that the slower speed that a gas trimmer affords has been a night and day change for me thus far.
Ryan; Could you tell us what types of grass you have now around your lawn and other types you have had and why you changed them? You said you liked rye grass , then low cutting the front yard with KGB. Kind of a history of what you have used and didn't like. Cool season lawns have a lot of choices like the 3 seed mix that"s sold for cool season lawns, and what about biodiversity for disease control. All confusing.
Mow and then spray (I use ortho ground clear) everything the mower misses and you’ll only weed eat once a year. I Do it in front yard you can’t tell from the street but i live in the boon docks. I only need to spray once some times twice a year.
