- I have a love hate relationship with the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey. So here’s the thing; In my opinion Super Mario Odyssey has some of the best boss fights in all of the Super Mario series, but while some of the bosses are really great highlights of the game, there are also some bosses that are … well not. This kind of leaves us with an eternal question? Why are some of the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey better than others? What is it that makes a Super Mario Odyssey boss really great, why are some of them so annoying, and most important of all? Which out of all the Super Mario Odyssey Boss fights is the best one, and which one is the absolute worst? In this video we are going to investigate those eternal questions, because today we are going to rank all the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey and we are going to put them into a formidable Super Mario tier list!

Just see it as a handicap in favor of the limited AI :p
Seriously, it always drives me nuts, whenever I get my hands on a miscalibrated joystick, be it an analog stick on a controller, or a big one for PCs - if I cannot use the full 360° field properly, or it's actually always "drifting" because it's not well calibrated or defect, I tend to avoid using it entirely.
I count to those people, that prefer playing NFS or any other game that goes really well with a precise joystick with the D-Pads. And I actually do well like that xD

He is my favorite boss fight in the game because of that reason. His aesthetic also rocked, looked intimidating and played fantastic, and overall I found much more engaging than those dumb rabbits. Man, I never disagreed hard with a Ceave video until now.

I thought i was the only one. Good to know
I would give him one ninji too, for the wrong reasons. It is the only boss that I had MAJOR problems with during my playthrough. But that was because I forgot you could spray vertically, even though I did that many times. So I tried to hit him from the front instead of the top. I did this for about 30 minutes and still could not beat him, so I rage quitted (I know so quick) for another half an hour and looked up a video of someone defeating this boss. I still forgot you could spray vertically, but I ground pounded him. I beat this boss first try after that. Silly me. But anyway, like Ceave said, it takes too long and the attacks are not hard to avoid, but trying to hit him is annoying.

With the octopus boss thingy, I liked it because it took place not in a boss arena but in the main area of the kingdom. That was really cool.

Actually, the mummy spawns aren't random at all.
If you'll notice, the mummies always spawn in coordination with his attacks.. for example, the spawn in a trail of his fists when they fly at you, so it'd make sense that you'd fall into them on your way down.
And when they spawn in front of you while dodging his fist slam attack, they always spawn in front of the knuckles.
You can see this more earlier in the video when he calls down the icicles, that when he slams his palms down, mummies spawn beneath him, perhaps to try and teach the player that his fists corelate with the mummies.

When he slams his fists at the same time, the mummies spawn randomly.

I found that if you keep constantly jumping it actually works just fine
While their spawns may correlate to his attacks, that information needs to be clearly conveyed to the player. If, as his fists fly at you, some bones rattle off and quickly grow into mummies, the player can easily see the connection. If you're just fighting the boss blind, it can be hard to notice the pattern to the mummies spawning while also watching (and dodging) the more obvious attacks

In defense of Knucklotec, he is one of the few, possibly only boss, that has an entirely new capture just for that fight.
I mean, it’s a new capture only in technicality. It has the exact same control and function as the Bullet Bills, just with a new model.

I got to admit, the first time i fought the octopus, I didn't know you had to keep spraying his head after washing away his lava hair. So I spent like several minutes trying to get high enough to land a ground pound on his noggin. I dunno, I figured the only reason the jets were affecting him was cuz his head was fiery at that point, not because they just hurt.
The concept of spraying an octopus' head with water to damage it (once the lava's gone) is a bit ludicrous so I don't think you should blame yourself for that one.
I actually didn't know what I was supposed to do for that boss so eventually I just decided to look for all the moons and moved on the the next kingdom. I eventually realized what I was supposed to do

Octomozart I found cool for the reason that you get to fight it across the entire seaside kingdom. It's unique in that way. No weird glowy boss barrier, you get to navigate around the terrain, while all the typical enemies are around you. If you studied your environment and learned about where external dangers lied, you had some extra knowledge to help you. I found the other common enemies lying around, like the squishy bubble guys that you capture and squirt water at you, to be a danger while fighting octomozart

I get why he doesn't like it. It feels like a cop out solution than an actual solution. But I agree with you and think its a great idea for accessibility reasons. I've recommended Hollow Knight to so many people and they are all turned away from the difficulty and it's a shame because it's such an amazing game with a beautiful world and story.

Octo is actually one of my favorite boss fights in the game. It helps that the little octo captures are one of my favorite captures in the game, but my favorite element of the fight is the fighting arena, or lack there of. Most boss fights take place inside these little fenced off controlled environments. You can usually just smell a boss fight coming based on the room you just stepped into. Octo takes you by surprise and turns the whole level into his battle field, he can almost go anywhere. This makes him feel like a threat if not to me but to everyone in the level, he's on the loose and you need to take him down.
Woah, I hadn't realized how each boss uses mechanics featured heavily in the kingdom and story moons before. It sounds so obvious now... Thanks for teaching me something interesting!
i like how ceave's tangents are actually very interesting and cool to listen to. so many others keep getting off track and it gets annoying quickly, but ceave does it right imo. stay great, ceave!

After watching this I feel really confused and embarrassed because I could not do the molluscs lanceur fight and it took about a dozen tries for me to beat it which over almost twice as many as first bowser fight which took me 5. I just could not line up with his head and I kept running out of water and landing on his projectiles.
You could use hammers with 5 being the worst and 1 being the best.

Hi ceave! Just wanted to let you know that when doing the rango fast strats, you can actually just jump on his head, and then wait a moment in the air and ground pound, and then jump. Rango doesn’t have a hitbox while he is in his damage animation. If you groundpound and then jump, you will immediately land on rango’s hat. Hope that helps you with your rango grind!
For the Bowser fights, I feel like it's a lot more common to do a side-flip over the fire, not a backflip. Honestly, in general it feels a lot more natural to do a side somersault than a backwards somersault

(toriel is a boss in undertale that, when you get too low on health, will miss all her attacks on purpose. i dont even know how i died.)
So in the Toriel fight as soon as you get to 2 hp she misses. However, she has ONE attack that does 3 damage, meaning if you are at exactly 3 hp, she _can_ kill you

What I really like about this video/channel is the little storyline with the rating system. We all know it is impossible to “run out of fuzzies” but it is just so fun that you use this to, for a very small moment, talk about the current state of the world. But because you do it in a funny way (I mean fuzzies aren’t that hard) it is really fun to look at. Keep up the good work!

I think you might be underestimating the difficulty of the broodal fights. I've seen my sister struggle more than an hour on each of them (yes, the main story ones, not the moon ones). Granted, she's not an adult, but mario games arent hard games made for highly experienced gamers

Can we all just appreciate that in addition to being a great commentary TH-cam channel with a lot of great content, that Ceave also has really well informed opinions about game design? I don't know that I have seen many gaming videos that are as objective and well informed about the actual game design element of games as Ceave's. I just really appreciate the hard work that goes into these videos.

Trying the robobrood boss fight without captures is straight up a Shadow of the colossus battle and that's one of the most memorable things I have ever seen in a Mario game.
Also, honestly I always try to defeat the bunny girl as fast as I can just because of how annoying and loud her laugh is.
Torkdrift is fundamentally a bad boss, however I love it purely because of how satisfying it is to shake your joycons to pummel its weak spot

The difficulty in the squid boss is getting lucky about aiming where he's going to go, because he's fast enough that if you aim where he is, you'll miss. It's hard to do this without running out of water before actually connecting.
The real worst is Cookatiel, because the hit boxes for the ramp up to it are smaller than the ramps themselves, making it often feel like you're just falling through platforms you should be landing on, and because anything that references vomit is automatically worse for doing so. It's annoying on both a mechanical & thematic level. (It's possible that it's more of a camera angle issue than a hit box issue, but they lock the camera angle while you attempt to climb, so it's difficult to know with any certainty. A more aerial view might improve the mechanics of that climb.)

I think it makes more sense to assume that they had a vague idea of "chain chomp boss" and came up with Madam Brood herself as a consequence of that, rather than assuming that they had her already, with or without her pet, and then either decided to add it or the other chomps.

Hollow knight has good boss fights. Thought some of them may be challenging, you can find patterns in their attacks and hit them before they attack you!
