Which Super Mario Odyssey Kingdom is the Absolute Worst One?

- When designing the different Kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo did something really interesting. They didn’t stick to a single blueprint on how to build the different Worlds in Super Mario Odyssey, but they decided to give each stage a completely different structure. The different Kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey not only differ in their setting, but they are also all build in a completely unique way.
But if all Super Mario Odyssey Kingdoms are built in a unique way, then that also raises a question?
Which Super Mario Odyssey kingdom is the best one, and more importantly, which one, is the absolute worst?
So today we are finally going to answer this eternal question, because today we are going to take a closer look at all the different kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey, we will discuss how good their setting and their structure work, we will rate all of them on how successful as a kingdom they are and finally we are going to put all of the Super Mario Odyssey kingdoms into a tier list that, at least in my opinion, objectively represents my opinion on how good the kingdoms are!

But it’s the potential represented by the atmosphere that just fizzles out. When I got there in game I was in awe of the setting. Such a jaw-dropping art piece with a difficult boss battle, only to find out that’s basically it for that kingdom.
The cloud kingdom is just a cloud arena, boring. I didn’t finish the collecting, so I didn’t play dark or darker.
But I had such high hopes for ruins, which Nintendo ruined

The wooded kingdom is definitely the best play to hide balloons, there are so many layers that it is really hard to find where one is.
Cloud Kingdom was definitely a huge letdown. It is STUNNING and my heart just sank when I realized that there wasn't going to be this beautiful cloud world to explore.

I get what he means in rating it as an actual kingdom. In a ranking of boss fights, the dragon is probably #1
i think the ranking of worst was because it broke Ceave's heart with unfulfilled expectations, to which i kinda relate. I wanted to capture the epic dragon and getting inside one of those towers with edgy dark enemies would be epic.....still disagree with ceave's decision: I think the cloud kingdom was the worst.

My problem with the seaside kingdom is that once you defeat the boss, the kingdom turns from sunny and bright to a sunset theme, which feels a lot less exciting and fun. I wish there was a way to turn the sky back to normal
Yeah even though I do like the post bossfight version of seaside better, I do wish that you had the option to revert kingdoms back to their pre boss fight state. Like metro could go back to night and snow could go to blizzard, ect...
Cloud Kingdom is the worst for me. It's basically just an arena with a bowser fight and that's pretty much it. They could have made at least a bit platforming before the fight. (Nope that 3 hat clouds don't count)
I'd like to explore Bowser's airship after the story, that would be cool.
And still I die at those 3 hats
Cloud and Ruins shouldn't count as "Kingdoms," since they just serve as boss stages and provide a handful of objectives. They're more like mini-hubs rather than fully fledged kingdoms.
Its also great how the "carbonated water" that makes up the sea in the Seaside Kingdom always makes the controler rumble a little when youre in the water!

I loved that subtle touch, the water really did feel "fizzy" and not just like normal controller rumble
Hd rumble is honestly super nice when integrated correctly. Sadly many games don't make use of this technology (usually ports, which makes sense).

Wooded Kingdom deserves 6/5 fuzzies just because of the soundtrack. It's amazing how much time I spent in that kingdom without the music getting old.

The Metro Kingdom is probably my favorite because I love platforming on top of and through the buildings, and I actually live really close to New York City, so it's cool to see it in a Mario game.

I know, right? The game has tons of unique, original versions of all the classic Mario settings, but the sky area isn’t even as exciting as New Soup sky levels.
Kinda wish they did something like the Cloud Area (Can't remember the name. It's where Mallow is from) from Super Mario RPG.

Read the map descriptions for cloud kingdom. While it's really lackluster on content there's a lot of lore they put into it. The arena is a moon phase themed one and it gets it's name as a kingdom from being the host to an ancient civilisation. The overall aesthetics packed into it are really good as well. I just wish there was more to it.

I feel like it's kinda unfair to rate the kingdoms after the story ends. The kingdoms you rated the lowest were amazing, but not in an exploration kind of way. Cloud was the first time you fought bowser, ruined had an amazing battle with a friggin dragon and darker side had a challenge that took me weeks to complete. I get that you wanted to put every kingdom on the same field, but not including the purpose of the kingdom feels like such a waste...
The thing is that cloud and ruined didn't need to be it owl kingdom lol.

Wooded Kingdom gang! Steam Gardens slaps harder than almost any other BGM in the game.
I apologize for disagreeing but I just don’t think Wooded Kingdom is all that memorable. I swear if you put a screenshot of it and asked me which Mario game it is in, I would think it was a galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy. I don’t know why but I feel like the objectives, atmosphere, and captures aren’t as fun and more tedious in this kingdom. (I still love the stretchy plant captures though). This still doesn’t change my mind that Mario Odyssey is by far one of the best 3D Mario game. (It is near perfect with a few less than noticeable flaws)

Honestly I feel like I love all the kingdoms and each have their highlights. Honestly I can’t decide which is the best from sand, metro, wooded, or luncheon for me. I do think cloud is the worst as for me it’s really hard to see with my brightness settings and it’s look isn’t as interesting as ruined. The rest of the kingdoms I really Love

I agree on Sand Kingdom. When I first played the game, I spent 3 hours collecting as many moons as I could in that stage before moving on to the next stage. Super engaging!

I'm a sucker for winter/Christmas stages,and this gives me the winter vibe
I liked snow stages because there is no snow here so the only times I see snow is if Im outside of my country which doesnt happen a lot so at least I can see snow in the game

I feel like the most interesting kingdom themes were the ones delegated to boss arenas. Like a ruined castle & clouds would’ve been cool level times if they were fully explored.
Actual love for lost kingdom?? Its one of my favorites. Very compact with so much to find, love the atmosphere and weird music. It also feels the closest to how stages would be in super mario 64. Something about it just works. Also, my favorite kingdom is luncheon.. mostly because the music is awesome and the level theme is just perfectly goofy.

Edit: If you ask me, it seems a bit unfair to rank Ruined Kingdom as the worst based on what it _isn’t._ In my opinion, Cloud Kingdom is the worst due to it being just a completely empty, not very visually appealing space used for one Bowser fight. The Ruined Kingdom on the other hand is beautiful and is home to one of the most APESHIT bosses in Mario history.

Bowsers kingdom is my favorite though. The atmosphere, the way you climb up, the peaceful island halfway with crazy cap, the way the music and atmosphere gets much more dynamic near the main courtyard entrance, the hakama plus the Luigi cap are my favorite outfit combination, and that’s easily my favorite. Also the ruined kingdom is in my top 3 kingdoms despite it being empty. I just love it so much. I don’t even play games like dark souls or games with this type of art style. Also I kinda hate sand kingdom. It was the most annoying to 100% and every time I started 100%ing it, I abandoned cuz it was just so annoying. For me, ruined is better.

My favorite is seaside because the seascapes are beautiful and I love how the boss fight takes place around the whole kingdom instead of having a little sub area for the battle
Cap Kingdom: Small, yet simple. Each part is easily recognizable but also doesn’t feel boring.
Favorite Part: The Town
Least Favorite Part: Having to use the ParaGoomba a lot
Cascade Kingdom: Bigger, and a lot more fun. Great music, fun boss, and just great to find secrets in.

Sand Kingdom: Amazing to explore in, many ways to get around, and very iconic.

Wooded Kingdom: More Compact, but still great to explore. Awesome combination of forest and factory.

Lake Kingdom: Small, but still fun as no section feels unnecessary or slow.

Least Favorite Part: The frog poison mini level
Cloud Kingdom: Barren and also small. Lost potential for a fun sky level.
Favorite Part: Fighting Bowser
Least Favorite Part: Everything else
Lost Kingdom: Small, but still fun. The branching paths kept the kingdom from feeling too linear.
Favorite Part: The tropical wiggler
Least Favorite Part: The poison
Metro Kingdom: Every area is great to explore, fighting the MechaWiggler is awesome, and jumping on the roof tops is thrilling.
Favorite Part: The festival
Least Favorite Part: Jump Rope Challenge
Snow Kingdom: The town is cute, but the Main Land and Bound Bowl races aren’t fun.

Seaside Kingdom: Waaay too many areas and isn’t fun to explore. Even the boss is just alright.

Luncheon Kingdom: Amazing theme and fun to explore. The lava bubble capture is ingenious and all the areas are recognizable.
Favorite Part: The cooking Carnival
Least Favorite Part: The peak climb
Ruined Kingdom: Lost potential and way too small. No fun to revisit either.
Favorite Part: Fighting the Lord of Lightning
Least Favorite Part: Everything else
Bowser’s Kingdom: Great Theme and the linear design is great. Really builds up the final battle.
Favorite Part: Pokio
Least Favorite Part: The purple coins
Moon Kingdom: The mainland is kind of boring but the moon caverns and final battle are awesome.
Favorite Part: The ending
Least Favorite Part: The mainland feels too barren
Mushroom Kingdom: Great references and simple to get around in. The castle was awesome and playing as Yoshi was fun.

Least Favorite Part: Toadette’s achievement moons
I mostly agree with everything, but my least favorite part of Seaside is the volleyball.
This has to be one of my favorite videos by you. You rarely make videos about pure video game design, and this one is so well made. The intro music, Shunshine music combined with Ceaves voice makes these videos very relaxing. Like a Podcast almost. I love them you can just put them on while playing a game or going for a walk or even just chilling in general, since the video itself *basically* is not required, just his voice really. Very good videos, well done
Switch the four fuzzy levels with the 5 fuzzy levels and I’m perfect with this list.
Bowser, Lost and Wooded just had so much atmosphere and fun, the best captures, the areas felt more dense and had a ton of variation to them and stuff hidden better. 4 stars > 5 stars for me.

Me playing 3d all stars games then playing odyssey and getting so confused that coins don't heal
using your list, my least favorite of the kingdoms nominated is cloud. I always forget it exists until i need to fight bowser 1, and that speaks for everything. there is nothing to do, with, from what i recall, less than 10 total moons even with the moon rock. ruined is so aesthetically pleasing and surprising, i dont think anyone can forget it. Darker is safe due to the final challenge nature of it, mixed with all the feels in the beginning and end. excited going into it, and nostalgically sad leaving it.
also, "no platforming challenges built into seaside kingdom"? i dare you to play "the water is lava" and make a lap around the outer ring of islands surrounding the central glass. it is possible, and quite a fun self-imposed challenge.
I love the Wooded Kingdom for one major reason. It reminds me of Planet Wisp from Sonic Colours and Sonic Colours is actually the first ever videogame I remember playing, so it’s always held a special place in my heart.

The Sand Kingdom is my favourite kingdom because I'm absolutely in love with all the cultural panache they put in. From the Dia De Los Muertos styled inhabitants to all the ruins and the ice deity as the boss!
The only bad part about is how badly some parts of the lore are handled.
For example, who is Knucklotec? Why didn't they give him a little context? Like someone mentioning him in-game.
He appears everywhere, meaning he is extremely important to the inhabitants.
But he gets destroyed. Nobody questions it. He was the guardian of the FRIGGIN' RING.
Not even the guide mentions him. All the things we know about him are from the art book and that's it.
Other than that, it's such a fun atmosphere to explore. I finished it 100% just for that.

Speaking from my experience, I LOVED Snow Kingdom. I loved its different take on the formula, its citizens and would rate it a 5/5 fuzzies. Its my second favourite kingdom in the game after all.

Snow kingdom sucks, and it was the first and mostly only kingdom I didn’t like playing, but I’ll be honest, the bouncy ball minigame is really fun.

I love seaside kingdom. Being a gusher is amazing, exploring the random underwater areas is amazing!
I’m really glad someone else disliked the luncheon kingdom. It’s probably my least favorite because of the reshuffling of the layout and just the awkwardness of said layout in general.
Luncheon was my least favorite level that I didn't finish until the very end of the game. I hated how the whole area is full of lava and there was no easy way to recover from a mistake. I spent too much time falling in lava, not being able to get back to safety, and just waiting for Mario to die. It's really alienating to people who don't play games very often.

Honestly wooded kingdom was my favorite kingdom. It’s just so massive and sprawling. I can genuinely get lost and I love that feeling.
The deep woods was a total surprise. I had no idea it existed until I went back after beating the game. So I really enjoyed it as a secret, mysterious area.
The inconsistency between all the kingdoms is really just the strangest thing.
Some are massive, and some are just boss arenas that get categorized as an entire kingdom for some reason.
Some have a ridiculous amount of effort poured in to their atmosphere, and some are just absolutely bland.
Some have really clearly planned structure, and some seem just haphazardly thrown together.
I personally really loved the atmosphere of Lost Kingdom, and the art style is super cute and appealing to look at too. For me that is the far best kingdom in game.

My favorite kingdom is the Wooded Kingdom. The rustic arcological aesthetics, the beautiful natural vista juxtaposed with the machinations, the sheer verticality and the different areas offering a slew of places and new discoveries while retaining their raw beauty, and the music echoing in the background for an oddly enjoyable if misplaced beach music. Really, the level is all over the place (pun definitely intended), and that's why I love it so much. There is nothing else quite like it for me, but Sand Kingdom and New Donk City are quite close.
Now Snow Kingdom on the other hand... Hands down the absolute worst. Extremely boring, uninteresting palette and level design, nothing much to do, and very closed in without much personality to it. Had they gone with a full-scale sandbox Christmas-themed level, it could have been amazing, especially with how auroras and festive lights could have been implemented into the level's atmosphere. In terms of wide-open sandbox levels go, then Luncheon Kingdom is the worst in that regard. Very boring, uninteresting, and extremely disappointing considering the equally large levels that come before it.

Man, I'm loving all the GameCube music, especially the SMS tracks. Sunshine is one of my all-time favorites.
I like Lost the best...As you said, the platforming being integrated into the level design is great (which I guess I didn't really realize was why I liked it until you pointed it out), and I just love the color palate. I don't think it's too small, I don't think every level needed to be huge.
Ruin Kingdom has such a great boss fight though. Cloud kingdom’s boss fight was lame in comparison.
I disagree. I believe the dragon could've had at least a bit more challenge but hey... Just an opinion.
@@randomperson4254 Well, the dragon rematch is certainly more challenging, at least. None of the regular story bosses are tough. The final bowser fight is probably the toughest of that bunch, but even he will probably kill you two times at the absolute most.

awesome list! I agree with a lot and you worked hard on this! The only thing I disagree with is that I did not like seaside and I would’ve given wooded kingdom 5 fuzzies and I adore luncheon kingdom
Late to the game (literally) but my favorite was seaside. I loved the boss fight incorporating most of the kingdom. It also did the best job giving you the skills to defeat the boss while you’re completing the kingdom. Also I hate most water levels in most games so this was very refreshing.

My favorite kingdoms were Luncheon then Lost. Luncheon was a really interesting kingdom to explore and find all the weird food stuff in it. Also the forks were amazing, and I love how the entire story progressed. Lost is just awesome and it’s cool how you are the first person to find it. My least favorite is cloud because, it’s a cloud and the moons after you beat the boss are so annoying and tedious. I think you’re right about ruined being incredibly wasted potential, but I like how the story on the map page actually links in all the stuff in the kingdom and it has a FREAKING DRAGON as a boss. Even if it is disappointing how it was underused, the dragon had more going on after the boss fight, like the parkour tower and how the boss actually just laid there and said something when you interacted with it.
the metro kingdom its just awesome i really like the super mario bros style that the kingdom approach for not talking about his boss and the donkey kong part its just awesome

Ceave, when you showed the nominations for the worst kingdoms, the 3 kingdoms showed up on the screen in order: left, middle, right. And then the middle kingdom (Ruined) got chosen as the worst. But for the best 3 stages, you put them in the order middle, right, left. And the middle got chosen again.

In my opinion, they're all amazing and the game is one of the best I've played in years
All except Dark Side, because trying to get quite a few of the moons there made me want to rip all my hair out of its roots. Darker Side at least was mercifully just the one sadistic mission.
Honestly my favourite is seaside kingdom, it's such a chill place I love the vibe
