  • In this video we take a road trip down to Big M Auto Wrecking in Williams, California! John Fowlie is the owner of the yard and it features the biggest collection of Forward Look Mopars in the country. The Forward Look covers the period of 1955-1962 for the vehicles designed by Virgil Exner. He has plenty of other vehicles as well including Mercury's, Lincoln's, Skyliner, Crew Cab Dodge Truck, Cadillac's, little bit of everything. John is a super nice car and if you need anything we have a link below to his website. We delivered a 1961 Dodge Phoenix Convertible to him and picked up a bunch of parts we needed for the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible that is going back together here.

I do enjoy seeing the cars I grew up with. I was born in forty nine so my like or dislikes don't matter to anyone anymore. They want a "cool" SUV from the current years of the two thousands. I never even wanted near a station wagon when I was young. I see a guy who is up in years who has collected many rigs and has a value system meaning most of these cars will never see the road again. Piled deep and forgotten, brush growing around them. He will like all of us die at some point and all of his collection will go to scrap. Kids today have a total different value system and would not be caught in a 61 plymouth convertible, and that is one that has been restored to perfection with no imperfections. Still ever popular was tri five chevy's which I just could not afford at the time and also had fords on my mind. I could afford them, I never lost a race while growing up as the big block fords were my choice. My dad was a chrysler guy meaning any dodge or plymouth, and I was born in the back of a near new 47 chrysler four door car. Oddly I do remember it so very well as it sat in our yard for years with a transmission that had started to slip.

I like pearl paint on this era of mopar. The soft radius steel stampings jump out more than metallic paint. There was a 60 or 61 Dodge in aqua pearl on this channel a few months back that probably looked a lot better today than it did on the showroom floor.

And in France I think the Simca brand became part of the Peugeot Chrysler Jeep(?) group, and I think then Simca became Talbot ( A brand name that disapeared some years ago ). Not sure of the chrtonology of the Simca to Talbot brand change .

Ahhhh, you’re beyond a hoarder, love it. Love any and all Mopar stuff, I had three scouts, 64,65 and a 72, your right on the 60’s scouts. I broke front leaf springs 4 times, 2 rear axles, not the housing but the axles themselves. I liked how everything was tucked up under the frame though. I had in the 65 the half V8 slant 4 thingy, with the oil bath air filter, 3spd with warn overdrive, can’t remember the transfer case, not the T-90 maybe T-14 something. It had way cool 4:88 Detroit lockers front and back I think? Can’t remember, one wheel slipped the other took over back and forth, it was a crawler but very light duty.

Thanks Tom. It's too bad (or fortunate!) we're on opposite coasts or I'd be dropping by your shop all the time. ;-) Generally I love the looks of the Exner period, but the '61 Darts were just weird, particularly the rear looks like a mix of conflicting ideas between the taillight design and the angled fins and how they're shaped. I had a first-year '60 Dart Pioneer 2dr sedan (powerflite, poly 318), and it was just really cool, style-wise, while my neighbor growing up had a wrecked '61Pioneer sitting out back for years. It was hard for me to believe they were the same model only a year apart.
