Brilliant vid. I use the Zoom but put it in my jacket pocket, winter jackets are fine but with the summer ones, I start to get wind buffeting noise around 50MPH. Your idea about the foam is fantastic. I might try that but with a Kreiga US-10 tail bag and see what results I get. Cheers :)
Hi RJ, what type of settings do you use on the H2N? Any advice of the amount of channels (button on the top), mic gain (twisty knob on the side), recording format or that sort of stuff?
FWIW, @royaljordanian, much like @Schaaf, still uses the same method. I saw his video from Morocco yesterday and you can hear the recorder bouncing around in a pocket of his jacket. These guys just like to stick to their proven and tried methods lol
I’m watching this in 2023 and your bike audio is still one of the best audio captures I’ve heard even with our current wireless mic options etc, this still sounds awesome
I didnt need anything before I started watching your channel.. Now I want a FY-G3 and now a zoom!!! Stop it your costing me money!! Great vids by the way love them.
thanks for watching & the sub! The foam is, like you said, for "a better fit" and of course also for protection. I don't really know, how tough these recorders are :) You just need to look for a backpack which has some suitable pockets. Inside the backpack there's no need for protection against wind noise!
thanks a lot, RJ! The main purpose of the foam is to protect the recorder. There's almost no wind noise up to ~90 MPH with the backpack method but of course the sound's quite a bit muffled. It always depends on the bike though. With the loud KTM it sounds pretty good but with my own bike, the CB500, I always have to fiddle around with Premiere's equalizer to get decent results. Unfortunately I don't know much about EQ's so the result's often some sort of lottery :)
For me it depends a lot on what kind of bike I'm riding. I.e., I mostly ride Ducatis, and some of the best Ducati sounds come from the intake, not the exhaust, so having the audio recording device in a backpack doesn't work very well. The best audio I've managed so far came from putting a foam wind slayer on the GoPro and a fluffy wind muff on the H1n, GoPro on the chin bar of the helmet and the H1n in a side pocket of a backpack. By using both audio tracks you can balance intake/exhaust noise to recreate what you actually heard while riding. The only issue with that method is you have to be a *lot* more precise in syncing your audio, just a visual cue along with a noise isn't enough since you need milliseconds of accuracy to sync the engine sound. Usually it works for me to have a coarse audio sync cue like tapping something metallic in the video, then that gets it close enough to zoom in on the waveforms and look for the similar engine sound patterns in the two audio tracks and sync them up more precisely that way. You can tell when you're close because the combined engine audio will suddenly become sharp and clear.
+Schaaf i'vo bought the ZOOM H1 and i've tried your method (in my last video) but I put it in Auto Level and I think the volume was a bit low(I've had to raise it in post production with fcpx) which is the input Level you use? How do you modifie in post production the audio to achieve your high quality level? If you want my mail is riccardo.fiaccadori@studenti.unipr.it (Cancel this message at the end) Thanks!
the input level depends on the bike I'm riding. On my CB I'm using 22. In postproduction I always try to modify the high frequencies with an EQ to make it sound more crisp. I haven't found a recipe yet so I'm always experimenting until I like the sound.
Hello! I use Zoom H2n, and I synchronize the audio with the video in an easier way! Just plug in GoPro first and then the microphone, and before you start the bike, you clap your hands at the beginning of the video, so it's much easier to find the frequency and sync! Sorry for my bad english!
No, I just wanted to tell you to turn on the GoPro first and then you turn the zoom on, but both recordings separately, do not connect. Clapping are to show the audio frequency, so you can synchronize in a very easy way! That way I said, it's much easier to sync the audio with the video. You're welcome!
In my case, if I horn with the bike on, it is difficult to observe the audio waves and synchronize in Sony Vegas, so I clap my hands at the beginning of the video, with the bike turned off. But if your way is good for you, I'm sorry, I was just trying to help! ^^
your way would become quite difficult if you start to record multiple mountain roads in one go. Because in this case I leave the audio recorder akways running but in order to safe batterylife and memoryspace I have to turn my GoPro off when getting from one mountain road to the next one. I'd be seriously pissed if I had to stop before every nice road, turn off my bike, clap my hands, then turn the bike on again and start riding and recording lol ;)
Hi Schaaf! I bought the same microphone (Zoom H1). But Ive got still wind noise in my backpack. So I think the trouble is my backpack? And; what are the settings on your microphone? And which setting have your input level ? And which backpack is that? Thank u! :)
Hello you! I use my ZOOM with the highest quality .wav setting available, input level of 22 when on my CB500. Different bikes needs different input levels, I always have to try that out myself first when on a new bike!
Hope you dont mind me chiming in also. I also use a Zoom H1. It may not be wind noise but peaking, so try different input levels. Even if you can run a set of headphones from your H1 so you can actually hear in real time what you are recording. Ensure nothing is hitting the H1 in your backpack and it's not moving around as all of this will generate unwanted noise. Lastly, if it really is still wind noise, get a standard microphone foam cover and pop that over the top of the H1. BTW Schaaf, love your work and passion for the noise of your bikes. Found your vids while researching filters for gopros.
I've never tried to record my voice while riding. But if you search on YT for "vlog setup" or "vlogging setup" you should get quite a few ideas for possible setups! :)
I never tried but of course it should work! The only thing you'd need to make sure is that your recorder is protected from all the vibrations inside your vehicle - but this shouldn't be a problem with a bit of foam I guess!
Thanks!! I use PluralEyes for auto-syncing. Although I don't use it for these onboard videos since it's only a matter of one minute. I can live with that. :)))) I love to use Premiere because of how well it handles h.264 coded files and because of Adobe DynamicLink between AfterEffects and Premiere (even quite handy for Photoshop-files)
The foam prevents any wind from getting in right? But it obviously allows the sound. But as I saw, you kept the mic part out of the foam. Why was that? I mean what was the real use of foam then?
+The Everyday India that's right. But it's also important for securing the ZOOM in it's place. As soon as the ZOOM can move around inside your bag your recording will be ruined. But in the first place it's protection since I can't afford to ruin my only sound recorder :D
Ordered the same recorder thanks for the tips can't wait for it to arrive and test it. I also took your advise on the time laps kitchen timer. Couldn't get an ikea one but found one shaped like a burger haha. Please have a look at my ep14 part 2 if you have time to take a look :)
I got myself a camera + audio setup for 180 euros: gopro hero white 7 for 110 (second hand), the parts for helmet setup for around 20, zoom h1 for 20 (secondhand), deadcat for zoom h1a for 12, sdcards 128g + 32 gb for 16. Honestly all I need since il be making pure sound type videos only! :) would recommend people to look into second hand, so much value to be found!
Really the only thing you can do is to try out several different mounting positions for your external mic - there should be less wind noise behind your back, for example. Stick your mic into some small pouch or try putting it inside your jacket! Thanks for your comment and the sub! I really appreciate it :)
Could you just use an external mic under the seat tail? I have a 2018 Kawasaki Z900RS, a GoPro Hero 4 (yes, it’s old) and a JVC external mic with the JVC factory windsock over it. I was thinking of mounting the GoPro with GoPro suction cap on the fuel tank. Otherwise I’m thinking of buying the mic in your video.
I got the Zoom H2n based on your advice on external recorders. If you haven't already got one I'd suggest a windjammer - it makes a difference even if it's in your pocket. I've been using mine in a small part of my tank bag which keeps it from moving around...but I like this idea linked with your tail bag idea too. Closer to the exhaust = better sound! : ) Will give it a try.
I can't believe that a 9 year old video could be so relevant and helpful in early 2023. Will certainly get that H1 or H1n. Will tuck that mic+foam setup inside a tail bag. Right now I'm just using my cheap vlogging lav mic tucked inside my helmet as my RAW audio recorder.😅
Very useful video. Thanks for that. Simple and easy too. Leaving the recorder on and syncing the audio later with the camera saves a lot of time in the field. Nice work.
+L. Gyger er macht es etwas einfacher, das ZoomH2N packt er einfach in seine Motorradjacke. Die Methode ist zwar etwas aufwendiger, dafür hat man NULL windgeräusche. I LIKE IT !!! (ok man muss einen Rucksack mitnehmen, aber ej dafür kann man sich was zu trinken mitnehmen ;) )
The foam is probably for protecting/cushioning the microphone body if it wobbles around inside the bagpack. Also, the buttons on the microphone won't be pressed accidentally.
congratulations :))) Like you said, it just takes some time to get used to the scraping - although it sometimes still scares me too, whenever I'm not expecting it ;) --- I made my first video with this method 3 years ago. I don't know why it took me so long to make such a "how-to video." RJ's method definitely works very well. I would also love to experiment some more but I don't have the money to buy new equipment right now
verfolge deine videos schon ne weile und muss echt sagen ,dass sie immer besser werden :) sehr kreativ und mit ner guten portion humor..schaut man sehr gerne. mach weiter so :) lg
So far I've been managing with the built in go pro mic, i have my camera mounted below my chin, and somehow when mounted in that position I get next to 0 wind noise. Might be the new fancy go pro working its magic, or maybe there just so happens to be a blade of clean air at that spot. Likely will switch to an external recorder eventually.
Thanks for information, it's very helpful in figuring out my problem. My exhaust sounds like it is missing in the recording but not to my ears while driving, but it could be the tuning of my engine.
I was planning to get a separate audio recorder and was wondering how the hell am I going to sync with the go pro. The horn is an excellent signal. Thanks a lot!
Will try this method. At the moment the Zoom picks up any movement within my backpack so lots of scraping noise. Hopefully this will muffle unwanted sounds.
While I'm waiting for my second hand h1 zoom recorder, I'm doing some tests with my phone and a Boya BY M1 mic inside the foam that comes with pelican cases (pelican replica) inside my camera backpack and also under the seat cover of my RE Interconticeptor. Very cheap setup but wind noise is not that high and exhaust sounds good. I'm also waiting for my ND filters for all my go pro cameras !
This is very late but the horn thing works best before you fire up your bike or make any other loud noises. Shows up as a vertical spike without anything else around it so its easy to find.
I think his is attached via Velcro or a couple of simple clips on the pouch. I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. Your backpack technique works well enough. :)
Hi again! You commented that you set the autolevel to on. But which are the rest of the configuration values that you use? Do you use the limiter, what config of file (WAV, mp3, hz) do you use? Thank you!
Thanks for this excellent video. I'm gonna to give it a try. I'm getting tired of recording rides and finding out I have nothing but wind noise as a soundtrack! PS: your video editing is second to none!
thanks! I'm always recording in .wav, highest quality as possible, low cut OFF (sometimes ON, doesn't make too much of a difference) and I'm usually using the auto-gain mode!
Visatorul well, you won't be able to tell a difference only with your ears. But it's important to record in .wav because it's an uncompressed form of digital audio recording. We need this better quality and more audio data if we want to be able to edit the audio recording afterwards! So if you don't need to edit/enhance your audio files after recording you also can use a high quality .mp3 setting!
Schaaf I don't know how much audio edit I will do. Made a few tests recording some music to see how it works.. but I have to wait for a sunny day to test it on my bike. Thanks!
Thanks for the video I wish I saw this earlier. I went for a ride recently and my mic was bouncing around my pouch bag. Also on the levels part I'm still working out whats the best level. I find auto not suitable as it has a mind of its own. Will post a ride video soon! Thanks a lot for the video love your content and keep up the good work! keem em coming! From Malaysia
You certainly should give it a try! Thanks, man! And I sometimes thought about a little Schaaf facebookpage for sharing my bike-pics with you guys. Although I always said to myself I'll wait and see if I can hit 1500 subs first lol. A FB page with ~30 likes looks kind of stupid hehe ;)
Hi Schaaf, long time viewer here! Thanks for the videos. I have an option to buy the older Zoom H1, just wondering if you are still using the H1 or did you upgrade to the H1N?
Have u ever tried a lavalier mic inside the rear backseat? I was going to try, but i m scared of wasting my money. Thanks in advance and great videos ❤️
Danke dir... Lo Cut on? Ca. Eingangslevel? Gruss und schönen Sonntag.

why this movie has so many dislikes? It's funny and useful, thanks for it :)
Rafał “movie” lol
Because it's better than the Avengers and fans are butthurt.
Because it's way over the top complicated.

Just picked up a Zoom H-1 myself. Can't wait for the snow to clear to test it out on the road! (Put up a stand-still sound test of the bike now)
awesome :)
I've never tried to record my voice while riding. But if you search on YT for "vlog setup" or "vlogging setup" you should get quite a few ideas for possible setups! :)
AWESOME video! Subscribed.
Can't wait to explain the block wrapped in duct tape sitting in the backpack when cops pull me over though.
Gefrce tehehe thanks man :)
and there certainly are ways to further improve my method as well! :) Let's wait and see what the next season's going to bring!
I never tried but of course it should work! The only thing you'd need to make sure is that your recorder is protected from all the vibrations inside your vehicle - but this shouldn't be a problem with a bit of foam I guess!
I really like the way you edit your videos man! :) It's funny, entertaining and interesting. I do not get bored, and thats good! :)
thanks a lot :)
embedding's enabled now. Hope you'll give it a share :)
wtf? why so many dislikes? great video, thx @schaaf!
MrNahazz video got dislike-bombed. And still more likes than dislikes. I win :)
Depends on how I could attach the pouch. I like the method with the backpack because I don't need to mount anything on the bike itself!!
Finally The perfect audio recording explanation, from 10 yr vid.. thanks if you are still looking at the comments here
I do! Thank you!
you're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!! I use PluralEyes for auto-syncing. Although I don't use it for these onboard videos since it's only a matter of one minute. This is brillant! Not only a useful guide but also a funny and very well edited video!
never really "measured" it but it lasts pretty long, I'm sure it's able to do 10+ hours of recording with only one AA battery!
That beeping horn technique is really smart.. why did I never think of that. Will definetly try this out!
*richtig gut mit der Stop Motion* :)
+GoCarsten danke :)
Love it. From now on, I'll replace my phone in a socks by this. :D
Good!!
The foam prevents any wind from getting in right? But it obviously allows the sound. But as I saw, you kept the mic part out of the foam. Why was that? I mean what was the real use of foam then?
+The Everyday India it's meant for protection. It's protecting the sound recorder :)
You mean to say foam is playing absolutely NO role in wind noise isolation whatsoever?
+The Everyday India that's right. But it's also important for securing the ZOOM in it's place. As soon as the ZOOM can move around inside your bag your recording will be ruined. But in the first place it's protection since I can't afford to ruin my only sound recorder :D
Cool :)
Thanks a lot :)
+Schaaf wenn ich eine enge Tasche in meinem Tankrucksack habe, brauch ich keinen Schaumstoff oder sonst was um den Zoom Recorder?
Oh I love you Schaaf so handy and clever. Nice stop motion too
many thanks goose mate!!
+Slipprymongoose I just purchased a ZoomH1... should be able to record that exhaust of yours now lmfao!
Ordered the same recorder thanks for the tips can't wait for it to arrive and test it. I also took your advise on the time laps kitchen timer. Couldn't get an ikea one but found one shaped like a burger haha. Please have a look at my ep14 part 2 if you have time to take a look :)
2:04 I love It!
danke vielmals :) Mit beiden Geräten kannst du garantiert tolle Ergebnisse erzielen!
I got myself a camera + audio setup for 180 euros: gopro hero white 7 for 110 (second hand), the parts for helmet setup for around 20, zoom h1 for 20 (secondhand), deadcat for zoom h1a for 12, sdcards 128g + 32 gb for 16. yes you can try that as well
People's undisputed champ for sure 👏👏👏
Thanks Moe :)
I got the Zoom H2n based on your advice on external recorders. If you haven't already got one I'd suggest a windjammer - it makes a difference even if it's in your pocket. Very useful video. Thanks for that. Simple and easy too. Leaving the recorder on and syncing the audio later with the camera saves a lot of time in the field. Nice work.
glad you liked it! Thanks!
thank you very much my friend!
Whats your gain set to ? from 1-10 ? thanks in advance. i have the H6 btw

@Schaaf i know this is 10 years old but why using foam if you leave the microphone out? Or do you push the zoom all the way inside? 😏
The foam is probably for protecting/cushioning the microphone body if it wobbles around inside the bagpack. Also, the buttons on the microphone won't be pressed accidentally.

Nice movie. I think the position of recorders is very important. I usually place microphone in my collar back. It seems backpack is olso good idea.
You're welcome, Blackcat! :) Thanks for watching!
it is Playmobil! I loved Playmobil when I was little :)))
awesome! Hope you'll get some good results!

I was planning to get a separate audio recorder and was wondering how the hell am I going to sync with the go pro. The horn is an excellent signal. Thanks a lot!
This is an amazing edit Schaff, Woahhh, without any voice or even hands visible.
Thanks
Will try this method. At the moment the Zoom picks up any movement within my backpack so lots of scraping noise. Hopefully this will muffle unwanted sounds.
Good luck!
I keep coming back in time to see your old videos, to see that litlle Honda screaming over Europe LOL. Ride safe folks!
thank you!!
hehe thanks Samurai!!

Hi again! You commented that you set the autolevel to on. But which are the rest of the configuration values that you use? Do you use the limiter, what config of file (WAV, mp3, hz) do you use? Thank you!
I leave all on standard except for recording quality I use the highest quality available
@@Schaaf Thanks!!!
Hi, can i ask you which settings you used for the best result on the Zoom 1? I bought one too, thanks!
locut OFF, limiter OFF, auto OFF.... yours? what is your advice or suggestion?
thanks!
Thanks! I've been cutting sticky dead cats to fit over my gopro mics but I want more engine sound. I like the foam idea to combat the handling noise👍🏍
give it a try!
Thanks for this excellent video. I'm gonna to give it a try. I'm getting tired of recording rides and finding out I have nothing but wind noise as a soundtrack! PS: your video editing is second to none!
Thanks mate, have fun!
thanks a lot, man! :)
Simple but effective tips and tricks ! Nice, thank you!!
very welcome!!
Solid video, really appreciate this setup idea. Gonna give it a shot this weekend!
glad you did
I tried it this weekend, and forgot to turn on my audio recorder.... so next weekend it is.
Cant you just use a 3.5 mm male to male cable to connect the zoom directly to the gopro with the gopro audio adapter or the media mod?
no idea
Would you consider doing an updated version of this video with your current setup and configs? Cheers.
nope, cause it is still the same :D
@@Schaaf hahaha, ok. Cool. Auto Leveling is not working for me. I am playing with the zoom configs. Any advice that you can give me?
thanks, man :) Appreciated!
Wahnsinn, hasst dir mal wieder richtig Arbeit mit dem Video gemacht! Daumen hoch ;-)
Hey Schaaf, you should do an update to this video! I'm curious if you're still recording this way.
I absolutely am :)
do it! :) Thanks for watching!
Very nice video, why so many dislikes :( it seemed u put lot of work into making this i like it a lot
it got dislike bombed way back in the day :)
ahahahaha probably ;)
Nice tutorial.. Can you tell something about the settings you use to record bike sound ?
It's too cold outside and I can't test my new Zoom..
thanks! I'm always recording in .wav, highest quality as possible, low cut OFF (sometimes ON, doesn't make too much of a difference) and I'm usually using the auto-gain mode!
Schaaf Thanks!....did you test it .mp3 ? is't a big diference?
Visatorul well, you won't be able to tell a difference only with your ears. But it's important to record in .wav because it's an uncompressed form of digital audio recording. We need this better quality and more audio data if we want to be able to edit the audio recording afterwards!
So if you don't need to edit/enhance your audio files after recording you also can use a high quality .mp3 setting!
Schaaf I don't know how much audio edit I will do.
Made a few tests recording some music to see how it works.. but I have to wait for a sunny day to test it on my bike.
Thanks!
Just bought the recorder today and this video appears on my timeline. Fate?
thank you! :)
ich find es super das du dir so viel mühe gibst bei deinen videos, man merkt das es dir spaß macht :)

From Malaysia
usually a level below 20 works well. I'm using something between 10 and 20 on almost all bikes
Amazing video! Thank you Schaaf! I've given up on mic setup with my GoPro, and this seems way better quality. Will give it a try! 👌🙏
thanks Joe
You certainly should give it a try! Thanks, man! And I sometimes thought about a little Schaaf facebookpage for sharing my bike-pics with you guys. Although I always said to myself I'll wait and see if I can hit 1500 subs first lol. A FB page with ~30 likes looks kind of stupid hehe ;)
Hi Schaaf, long time viewer here! Thanks for the videos. I have an option to buy the older Zoom H1, just wondering if you are still using the H1 or did you upgrade to the H1N?
I use the H1N but the H1 is better. If you can get the old model go for that
Have u ever tried a lavalier mic inside the rear backseat? I was going to try, but i m scared of wasting my money. Thanks in advance and great videos ❤️
no but I know it works for some people so I'd try if I were you
Danke dir...
Lo Cut on? Ca. Eingangslevel? Gruss und schönen Sonntag.
Lo Cut an und Input zB auf der CB500 von 22
thanks - I think it's very classy! ;)
