    The most important lesson to learn though is that once your video got compressed by TH-cam it will look like crap - no matter if you've been using an ND filter or not...
    But especially when you take a look at the scenery and the green bits in the side by side comparison you should see the difference. Personally I think the "smoothed" results with ND filter look more cinematic while the ones without filter will deliver more of "documentary style" - images.
    It's also quite funny to notice how the ND filter manipulates the colors of the video image a bit. Even though it's called "neutral" density... Usually ND filters come in different steps/strengths, dependent on how much light they block (= how dark they are). The darker, the more it'll manipulate your colors. Unfortunately it doesn't say anywhere how many stops the PolarPro filter has. Yet another reason why I'm suspecting them not to be exactly the highest quality filter products out there...
    While searching for even more filter alternatives I stumbled across these guys:
    www.snakeriverp...
    Their description at least sounds a lot more promising regarding decent quality!
    ---
    Unfortunately I can't even remember where I got my GoPro to 52mm adapter from. I bought it a long time ago. I think it was Amazon. All I remember is that it was dirt cheap. But as you can see even the PolarPro version I was using for all the sample videos still does the job. Even if it "handles" a bit nerve-wracking. Here's what I bought from PolarPro:

    So grateful for the many tests you've shared!
    The Hero5 allows ajustments of the shutter speed in the Protune settings (the minimum one being equal to the framerate used).
    I'm not sure if using a ND helps lowering the shutter speed even more. I might try to see that later but for now, thanks to your video, I went for a ND blender to darken the skies that too often get blown out.
    I've taken a Tiffen 0.6 ND blender but the effect isn't strong enough for a bright sunny day (just 2 stops). It's probably good for when it's overcast but a 1.2 should be better when the sun is out.

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks so much for sharing your insights!! Yes the ND indeed will help lowering your shutter speed quite a lot more. Unfortunately I still don't know how many stops the PolarPro crap has.

  • @ClutchFirst

    Great advice for newcomers and season GoPro users. ND filter at 50fps seems nice. You also forgot to mention that having the ND filter will help the GoPro not to blow out the white balance. :) Good vid dude.

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO the GoPro's doing a worse job at exposing correctly WITH the ND filter. But it's definitely tolerable!

    • @megaidiot
      @megaidiot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why sticking to 50fps? Why not going with 60fps? The 25fps for eu(pal) and 30fps for usa(ntsc) standards were set for old analog television (because of many technical limitations - and images were interlaced(half-images), the output in most editing software was inherited because they were originally used to make analog tv content). We don't have to stick with those, but I see lot of europeans go with 25 or 50. I go 1080/60 and 120 for shorter clips I know I want to slow down later.

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      because most regions in the world use PAL. Because 60fps can lead to flickering problems when filming in artificial light. Because European productions always get shot in PAL resolutions and framerates.

    • @megaidiot
      @megaidiot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to agree. However, I think in digital production PAL/NTSC/SECAM standards are obsolete legacy and will be ditched very very soon.
      The artificial light flicker may also appear on 25/50fps, but it is more visible on 60 due to refresh rate discrepancy of frame sampling on camera and alternate current feeding the lights (in eu). In theory, the phase difference should always be the same so you would only get brighter or darker lights - not flicker, but in reality you get the flicker from any classic incandescent bulb - it is only less visible if recorded in eu on 25/50. For pro shots, make a test run and replace the bulbs on the path before shooting the ride. :D :D :D

  • @Dowent
    @Dowent 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest, I´ve expected the filter to make more of a difference. For me, the main advantage was that the scenes with ND were less washed out.
    Still, it's really cool that you share these things, instead of keeping them to yourself. Not only this filter, but your audio setup, your camera settings, your render settings, nice :) .

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and I really appreciate the fact that some guys appreciate me sharing these things :) The effect of the ND filter also suffers quite a bit from the heavy TH-cam compression. The difference is much bigger with the uncompressed files.

    • @Dowent
      @Dowent 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Schaaf
      Yes, I always wondered whether big companies have some agreement with YT that lets them use more bitrate for their files.
      Recently, I´ve gotten really lazy and just edit my videos in Avidemux, avoid any re-encoding and only change the container for convenience purposes. With this setup, the hit by YT compression is quite brutal :D .

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I even asked TH-cam partner support whether big channels get lower compression. They said no. I don't believe them. I'm using the best possible render settings according to TH-cam and it still looks like shit. Of course images from DSLRs and more professional cameras will always look better and less compressed on TH-cam than the eversharp actioncamera stuff but if we take a look at the GoPro's channel for instance...

    1090p 50fps with ND filter looks: ahhh, nice for my eyes, but for your fast rides on narrow roads close to stuf and in and between traffic, I feel more "on board" and exposed to your ride without the ND. It kinda have a more profound emotional effect on me with the sharp no-ND filter frames. But maby it's just me... :-)

  • @theavangelist
    @theavangelist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You make an interesting case for using on-camera filters instead of doing this in-post to trick the hardware into using a different shutter speed. except I'm not sure that it's entirely true.
    On the Drift Ghost, you could achieve a similar thing by dropping the Exposure Compensation (EV) to -1.
    In terms of making things smooth, you can achieve this by dropping to 24fps, or shooting at higher FPS and then exporting out to a compressor at 24fps

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use exposure comp on the GoPro too but that doesn't work in bright and sunny conditions. Too much light. You'll need an ND filter

      Schaaf I have a question if you don't mind... I have the Multistrada but can't find a good place for my GoPro, helmet mount is a little bit too high as I can't mount it on my chin and the suction cup will only work on the sides of the bike. Should I go for a cheap full face helmet which can mount on the chin?

      Schaaf Shoei Multitech, it's old, but still in good condition. I have mounted from the side, low down, near to the jaw line. The problem is that the GoPro is not level, it's on the same angle as the curve of the helmet so I need an extra joint to straighten the camera so it is upright. I've ordered a mixed bag of parts now so hopefully the 'elbow' mount will allow infinite adjustment of the angle. I have also ordered the XCSOURCE 58mm adaptor with an ND4 filter :-) can't want to try, I just hope I can get the GoPro straight.

    I always liked superview because it makes the edges of the road flow past more which gives a better sense of speed. I have a tough time calling which I like better though. Either 1080p/50fps without filter or 1080p/25fps with the filter.
    50fps gives a smoother picture which on TH-cam works better in my opinion (youtube compression sucks when it comes to speed) but 50fps with the ND filter is too dark for my taste. However I like the color balance of the ND filter at 25fps better compared to 50fps and no filter and you don't lose a lot of the smoothness at 25fps because the filter is on. In the end I guess either one works for me :P

      ja, wenn man ProTune verwendet, muss man nachher in der Postproduktion halt auch was machen. Ist durchaus so gedacht :) Wobei der ND-Filter die Helligkeitswechsel etwas langsamer macht, da kann man nichts dagegen unternehmen.

    With the latest firmware you can adjust the fps too. So say (of course) you go for the minimal ISO and are filming at 25 fps, should you manually set the shutter speed at 1/50 as per the rule of thumb (or any other shutter speed) or just leave it on automatic? I can imagine that for somewhat switching lighting conditions like on a motorcycle it would be best to just leave it on auto to prevent over/ under exposure

    • @Schaaf

    I'm going to be difficult and suggest none of the settings that you've used in this video... kind of.
    I personally think that 25fps with the ND filter looks best (I'm a fan on the traditional 24fps film look), however I suspect that the quality would massively benefit from being filmed and uploaded to TH-cam in true 25fps as opposed to the 50 you've used here. The bit rate that TH-cam uses for 50fps probably isn't actually that much higher to what it uses for 25fps, so the footage would likely look better in true 25fps due to less TH-cam compression for a similar bandwidth. This, combined with uploading in either 2.5K or 4K for some super sharpness should look great.
    Either way, I'm sure your videos will still look great!

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.7K & 25fps looks a lot better on TH-cam indeed. I filmed a couple of RAWS in this resolution this year. Soon you guys will see them :)

    Thanks for this! Yes I didn't dedicate a moment to think about and was just annoyed the go pro killed the sense of speed of my rides so certainly this will help also never worked the protune guess need a more powerful Mac :) but if one puts the filter over the gopro as I read then issue will be wind noise so another mic is an option mute the clip. The one that you had over the transparent housing was not good enough? The ND examples were taken with which one the ugly one from beginning or the second you showed?

    well, the only wisdom about ND filters i have are:
    - never use "variable" ND filters, because your pictures (or video) will look "striped" even if you are not a pixel peeper.
    - always use the "slim" versions, and if you are using a wide angle lens (or even anything below 35mm equivalent), then use a slim step-up ring and use a filter 1-2 sizes bigger than the original filter thread on the lens to avoid vignetting as much as possible
    nice way btw to trick the gopro :) thanks for the tip (i'll tell my mom&wife the vacation videos look so fast, because of the ND8 filter :D )

  • @slaWterCH
    @slaWterCH 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a feeling that the R1M/Sustenpass video inspired you for this ;)
    So far, I haven't used my ND filter for the GoPro much. It's not so easy to use for my car videos since I have multiple angles and one of them is in-car. I haven't tested it but I'd say the in-car footage would look strange with a motion blur effect.
    But it works great for motorcycle videos!

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment my friend! Yea in-car I definitely would not use one either

    • @slaWterCH
      @slaWterCH 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And then it would look odd switching between blur and no blur images. But on a bike it gives you this tunnel vision effect, which works superb!
      btw, I can see now how that Multistrada issue happened ;) I'd say that's the quickest (and going by km/h, not blur) a Multistrada was hammered on roads like these. Usually that is a bit of a mid-life crysis bike for the Touring Gentleman. Not the speed junkie ;)

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to heavily use my censoring skills whenever I hit 4th gear with that thing ;) And you're probably right with the touring gentleman. It's probably why that one Italian biker approached me at the end of passo Giovo where I was waiting for my friend. I overtook that dude and - instead of complaining like most Austrians would do whenever they see me riding - he gave me a pat on the shoulder with two thumbs up and a couple of enthusiastic Italian words I unfortunately didn't understand ;) Gotta love Italia!

    • @slaWterCH
      @slaWterCH 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheTestr
      @TheTestr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Falls du Deutsch kannst, können wir auch gerne auf Deutsch schreiben :D

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh ja, sehr praktisch. Das hast du schon richtig verstanden. Aber wenn du die Kamera nun länger belichten lässt, dann lässt sie auch mehr Licht auf den Sensor fallen. Dein Bild wird bei sonnigen Verhältnissen und bewusst langsamerer Shutterspeed dann einfach komplett überbelichtet sein. Und deswegen musst du dann erst recht einen ND-Filter verwenden. Der lässt viel weniger Licht durch. So, dass die Kamera auch mit den längeren Belichtungszeiten KEIN überbelichtetes Bild liefert. Stattdessen aber korrekt belichtete Bilder mit wesentlich stärkerer Bewegungsunschärfe :)
